Keeping up with Annie___after 6 matches______________
    kills per set 4.40
    hitting pct .579
    digs per set 3.20
    blk per set 1.05
    pts per set 5.4

  3. LC September 25, 2014 1:21 pm

The one thing that I take into account concerning Annie’s stats is that she plays in a Community College conference and at 6’2 she is a giant compared to the competition, so it will be interesting to see what her stats will be like in D-1.

If she maintains these type of numbers in D-1 then holy cow, bar the door Katie we got us a super star.

  4. karin September 25, 2014 1:37 pm

For a big girl Annie’s most interesting numbers are her digs per set. Even at their level of play she’s second to their libero, uncommon for an mb.

in 1991 a fr. Dolores Allen was named NJCAA Tournament MVP
in 1992 a fr. Pele Baker was named NJCAA POY
both would’a could’a should’a been impact players for the Bows, Div. I all the way!

Long Beach State had that one MB outta Cerritos JC who ended up AA before she graduated (back around the same era).

There was that one Brazilian setter in 2010-11? at Fresno State (JC trx) who unfortunately couldn’t play for UH cause of occupied Uiato (an inferior setter comparatively).

  6. 1988 ("circles") September 25, 2014 2:50 pm

Perennial Top 25 ASU and Breaker (two year starter, trx) also.

  7. LC September 25, 2014 3:15 pm

JC and Community College not the same.

  8. Cindy Luis September 25, 2014 3:59 pm

    6. thank you for clarifying that. Mitchem was the national two-year college player of the year. It will be interesting to see how she transitions to DI. She is playing 6 rotations and, according to her coach Tom Pestolesi, is keeping a very good libero on the bench when being in the back row.

Cubi-Ontineru and Passi both JUCO national players of the year out of CSI.
    Baker was at Eastern Arizona.

  9. 1988 ("circles") September 25, 2014 3:59 pm

5’8 SLCCC’s Carol Grasso will end up at a big named.
Manu Olevao will end up on a mission next season (she’s going to be too old I think if she waits longer). Passi is nearly done with school.

A close friend of mine once attended Highline CC (a JC with athletics in 1988 circles) and was a 2x NWAACC all-am. She went on to play for British Columbia 4 year and ended up on the Canadian National Team.

    Donald Suxho, back!

  10. Cindy Luis September 25, 2014 4:02 pm

Don’t know if Manu-Olevao still thinking about her mission.
Passi’s last season will be 2015.
Highland is a Community College, not a JC, as its name says.

  11. 1988 ("circles") September 25, 2014 4:06 pm

Cerritos JC is a JC and they play in the CA CC league.
    What’s your point?

  12. warriorfan September 25, 2014 4:27 pm

I am very intrigued by Mitchem’s back row ability. I do think UH coaches will have to give her a look at opposite if she shows she can pass and dig next year.

Just watched BYU sweep Gonzaga, they are a huge blocking team, but look very slow to me. I wouldn’t mind UH getting a chance for revenge against them.

  13. warriorfan September 25, 2014 4:57 pm

watching LMU now, don’t know how the heck Sealy’s team got swept by them. They have good back row though and their setting is definitely better than UH’s right now but none of their hitters are that great.

  14. Cindy Luis September 25, 2014 5:24 pm

10 No point. Was agreeing that there is a difference between CC and JC. When you mentioned Highland CC and that your friend was AA at the NWAACC level her award came in the CC division.

  15. LC September 25, 2014 5:28 pm

“Cerritos College is a public comprehensive community college not a JC ” I cut and pasted that from their web site .

You will find arguments that there is no difference between the two and arguments to the contrary. The difference seems to be that a community college also offers classes in trades or other areas.

In athletics the NCAA has them different categories for a reason, competitiveness .

  16. Ashley September 25, 2014 7:02 pm

guys I know this is totally not related to the topic here, but I was just curious. what happened to Kayla Kawamura and Kyra Goodman? Did they decide not to return to the team this season?

  17. islandman September 25, 2014 7:02 pm

Some end up not going on their missions, I read, like Danny Ainge, Steve Young, Jimmer and Manti.

  18. 1988 ("circles") September 25, 2014 7:29 pm

    Have family from that area..Brea/La Habra/Buena Park/Whittier
Lived for years right off of Ocean Blvd.
Got to know some there too.

As the Admin VT has often stated, it gets weird for cause to stay away (although being on VT more than any single moniker would indicate). 😉

    Traci Dahl, 93-4

Gahr HS (LA Co.), and then there’s the commute from Buena Park (Orange Co.).
Orange Co. filed for bankruptcy during those years if I remember correctly..no local tax revenue being produced consequently.

Perhaps the difference between a heady wisdom (book knowledge) and heart knowledge (in volleyball).
    Aloha kakou.
    Aloha ke Akua.

    16. I think Kayla got a full time job I think

  20. Big Island VB fan September 25, 2014 10:38 pm

USA beat Netherlands in the women’s world volleyball championship 3-0. The first set was a nailbiter, 29-27. Kim Hill was the most prolific spiker hitting above 40% with no errors. She had the most kills, 12, and the most digs, 14. She doesn’t hit hard, but she is precise and know where to put the ball down. It was a fun match to watch. The real test will come Sunday against Russia.

  21. Cindy Luis September 25, 2014 11:06 pm

Goodman has retired from volleyball. I believe she is still at UH pursuing her degree. .
Kawamura has decided to move on as well. think she’s at HECO now.

  22. LC September 26, 2014 4:13 am

Kyra still at UH, spent a good part of the summer touring Europe with her sister and Justin (Clapp) and I recall something on their travel blog about her taking summer online classes at UH while on the trip.

Justin and Kaela have been on this around the world adventure that started back in May.They blog daily about their adventure and one gets the feeling that wedding bells are in the future for these two.

Right now they are touring France and will soon be headed for Zurich to see Emily who is presently in Brazil with her team training and some friendly matches.

  23. wildcard September 26, 2014 7:00 am

    12. i saw byu vs gonzaga too and i thought is it me or they look quite a bit slow too.

that would be awesome if hawai’i can get a chance for revenge..im sure shar manuolevao has a bone to pick with them…she is now apt at smashing it through the block and she also possesses the same kine of divine abilities they have….if not more.

  24. Ashley September 26, 2014 9:49 am

Thanks everyone for responding. I appreciate it. Really disappointed though, I wanted to see what Kyra could do on the court, along with Kayla. I definitely thought Kayla would have a good chance at the Libero position with Sarah.

  25. wildcard September 26, 2014 10:05 am

awaiting na wahine to teach davis a lesson….

  26. roofer68 September 26, 2014 10:35 am

    20. Interesting comments on Kim Hill’s spiking. Scott Wong’s similar analysis of Kalei Greeleys’s swing.

  27. mei mei September 26, 2014 11:07 am

Kalei G is my vote for Big West Frosh of the year…. hope she doesn’t get robbed like Nikki did last year ~

  28. hollycow September 26, 2014 12:01 pm

    27. Greeley will have to put up some impressive performances during the BW season to win FOY. Niki W. of Fullerton has already won 3 FOW honors, and she is the go to hitter on their team because of the lack of good terminators. Kalei on the other hand is surrounded by terminators, three on the front row on most rotations, and even one or two in the backrow.

  29. Cindy Luis September 26, 2014 3:32 pm

    27. Mei Mei, Taylor was Big West FOY last season. Where the problem came was at the all-regional level, how Hawaii was put in with some of the Pac-12 teams, etc.

    28. Withers FOW came against nonconference. We’ll see how things play out during conference play. But you are right, that Greeley is surrounded by other solid players does limit her swings.

  30. Cubicle1126 September 26, 2014 3:54 pm

cindy — ali spindt from ucsb was last year’s big west freshman of the year. not taylor, altho she did make the all-freshmen team.

  31. mei mei September 26, 2014 3:58 pm

ohh thanks Cindy for the clarification!
I think Greeley’s serve/receive is exceptional and believe she passes more than the other back row players?… at least it seems that way from previous game played thus far. that should be a factor as well not just the hitting/offense aspect.

  32. Cindy Luis September 26, 2014 4:10 pm

    30. thanks. I was looking at the Big West record book and they have Taylor listed as the FOY, not Spindt.
    Sorry Mei Mei, my bad.

  33. Cindy Luis September 26, 2014 4:10 pm

There is a new thread up for the match

  34. hollycow September 26, 2014 4:56 pm

    31. Spindt won the FOY for that reason, she played 6 rotations and Nikki Taylor not, until the very last few matches.

  35. Cindy Luis September 26, 2014 7:35 pm

will have to let the Big West know that their record book is incorrect since they list Taylor as the winner.
Have to correct myself about Kawamura. for some reason got her confused with Kam, who transferred, injured , returned home.
Kawamura has decided to retire from volleyball as well. Believe she is working for HECO.

  36. Cubicle1126 September 27, 2014 10:41 am

i also think that with 3 teams sharing the conference title last year, coaches votes were more spread out, and tended to favor spreading the awards around. if hawaii had dominated and won it outright, it might’ve tipped the awards in favor of hawaii (and, in turn, taylor might’ve won FOY). these awards always seem to be dominated by the conference champion, as we all know.

in context, last year’s individual awards really were spread out among the 3 teams at the top — hawaii, ucsb and csun. hartong was POY, spindt from ucsb got FOY, and welch (ucsb) and stork (csun) shared the coach of the year honor.
