Again…real bad news. Hoping for a speedy recovery.

  2. Cubicle1126 August 23, 2016 3:30 pm

    uh oh ….

  3. Kazu August 23, 2016 3:31 pm

This team is falling apart to injuries before the season even starts. 0-3 first week ??
Best of luck to Taylor hope it won’t be to long.

  4. Ashley August 23, 2016 3:41 pm

season didn’t even start and we literally losing all players. Kalei, Annie, Casey, and now Nikki? season starts in three days, idk it will be a miracle if this team does survive the weekend. sad way to kick of the 2016 season. hope for speedy recoveries for all and hope someone can who is not injured will step it up.

  5. Warriorfan August 23, 2016 3:48 pm

Whoa good bye hosting sub regional:(
Hope its not too bad if it is as bad as Nikki had it the year before i’d prefer she redshirt.

  6. Willie August 23, 2016 4:00 pm

Wow, not the homecoming that Coach Shoji was expecting after his great trip to Rio. This is the 2nd major injury of the 6 projected starters. Not wanting to be superstitious, but there that “things come in 3’s” thing. Maybe having some kind of blessing to ward off the “boogies”?

Wishing Nikki a fast recovery and hoping this is more on the side of caution to have her sit out this week. Same goes for Annie on healing that left pinkie real good sooner than later.

  7. Willie August 23, 2016 4:02 pm

How ironic that Annie broke her right pinkie last year and now the left and that Nikki injured her right elbow last year and now the left.

  8. Cindy Luis August 23, 2016 4:06 pm

    4. They haven’t lost Greeley and Castillo. Both are playing. Greeley still recovering and Castillo’s elbow is fine.

  9. tongo August 23, 2016 4:16 pm

So odd. Are there certain drills being introduced in the last couple years that are inadvertently producing unintended finger and elbow injuries? Someone should be reviewing those drills – or is just mishaps that are part of the game.

  10. rabbit ears August 23, 2016 4:42 pm

#9 your last sentence is probably correct.

  11. Hot August 23, 2016 5:16 pm

I thought this was a joke. Hard to believe the injuries this season. Suddenly a 5-10 DS with front row experience like Ross has become a valuable addition to this team.

  12. Hot August 23, 2016 5:25 pm

Mitchem out for approximately six weeks, Greeley not 100 percent, Burns only recently cleared to practice, Castillo missed practice, Taylor out for the weekend.

This is like the 2006 season when Keefe, Hittle and Thomas had season-ending injuries, and Mason and Kamana`o also missed matches.

  13. haleiwacrossfitter August 23, 2016 5:35 pm

This is really disappointing. Was really hoping to see our top team play against this week’s teams. This is probably the toughest weekend of the year. Extremely disappointed.

That said…I am also confident that our “replacement” players will have something they want to prove to the coaches and will surprise us. Maybe a 2-1, with some great luck, 3-0 weekend. Kendra always rises to the occasion. She is a gamer when the lights are on.

  14. blunite August 23, 2016 5:40 pm

Looks like a 6-2 (Iosia and Koelsch) but I doubt that is Shoji’s intention. If they film study and run fast there is always a glimmer of hope. (The middle-centric lineup does not require an opposite but without practice it is not an option.)

There is still a chance that this journey will lead the Wahine to the destination (Columbus, Ohio) if everyone recuperates in time for the conference run.

  15. Frings August 23, 2016 5:41 pm

Cindy! Desperate to find out if the matches will be available on line this year? Is Big West TV carrying the matches? Expats like me here on the mainland could be out in the cold!

  16. Cindy Luis August 23, 2016 5:52 pm

9 Nothing to do with drills Mitchem finger was off a block Taylor landed awkwardly during scrimmage
14 Koelsch will at Opp not in a 6-2 You don’t know what shoji”s intention He will evaluate when he gets in the arena tomorrow

  17. Ron August 23, 2016 6:01 pm

This rash of injuries is certainly upsetting but not the end of the world. My starting lineup would be:
LS 1- Greeley She is so steady
LS2- Granto She really improved and very determined
RS- Castillo She has potential and works hard
M- Maglio All-American in her future
M- Burns If she can play under the lights as well as she
    practices she will do fine
S- Higgins Has improved every year
L- Kahakai One of the best
I also think Sibley, Koelsch, or Iosia could step into the above lineup and contribute. When we get Annie and Nikki back we will have a very deep and talented team!

  18. Cindy Luis August 23, 2016 6:08 pm

15 no video stream only audio see uh athletics.com volleyball schedule for links

  19. WaWa August 23, 2016 6:32 pm

Wait, what…NO VIDEO STREAM?? That’s ridiculous. Not tryna shoot the messenger, just thinking out loud.

That’s so unfortunate given how many fans the UH program has on the mainland. Especially for alumni of the University.

Taylor’s injury is extremely unfortunate, but given that she landed awkwardly, I’m not completely surprised. She’s been injury prone since juniors. At her size, mobility is a sacrifice.

I would hate to be in Shoji’s shoes returning to a injury depleted squad in what is supposed to be such a promising year. It’ll be exciting to see the rest of the girls on the court, but we need those non conference wins for hosting.

  20. vballfreak808 August 23, 2016 6:45 pm

Very bad timing for a promising season but its not over yet, we still have some players left. No matter how tough the other team is, it will be a show to watch the Wahine fight.

Agreed about not being able to watch online, may be the first time in many years that I cannot watch either live or online.

  21. Warriorfan August 23, 2016 6:56 pm

Wahine wont give up but Maglio and Granato have to come up huge.

  22. Bleachercoach August 23, 2016 6:57 pm

Everyone has already mentioned about the unfortunate injuries to key players especially with all NCAA Tourney teams we play every night. On the flip side we have to allow Mags to be the Nikki as the leader. I feel confident with Granato, Castille, Burns, and Sibley….This is an opportunity for them to step up and earn their stripes I really like Koelsch on the outside too. She will surprise many people as an outside hitter/blocker. Mckenna Ross is a fierce competitor at 5’10 and not afraid to give it her all as an OH when not playing DS. Higgins and Iosia brings talent/ experience/Magic Hands as the QB for the team. Koelsch provides the block as a setter. Our Defense is Solid!!! Greenly at 6’2″ is so steady at defense and when healthy will be formidable. If she cannot hit full power on offense then she may be not.be a threat offensively but only defensively. She is pen as a starter IMO when she can hit the ball harder..(maybe this weekend she will buckaloose )…I think with all the injuries, it could be a blessing to see what our newcomers and deep bench can do . Other than all I have written, I feel confident we will battle hard and maybe even surprise the crowd without our top and key players…..”Keep the Faith Gang!”

  23. Maverick August 23, 2016 6:59 pm

Shame about lack of streaming. I checked UH site, Wisconsin’s, Bigwest.org, and OCSports. We on the mainland are SOL. Guess we have to hope a Good Samaritan posts a video replay on YouTube as has been done over the past few years.

  24. haleiwacrossfitter August 23, 2016 7:35 pm

Maybe beach should be in Nikki’s future. She never seems to get injured there, and in fact, always heals up on the soft sand

  25. Bleachercoach August 23, 2016 7:52 pm

I don’t know how much of it is true but even Kalei Mau of Arizona didn’t play in their scrimmage last week. She is battling an injury too…I am certain she will come home to play in front of her ohana. Wow, what’s happening to all these top guns getting injured before the season gets under way….It should be an interesting weekend!

  26. vballfreak808 August 23, 2016 8:13 pm

    25. In an interview she did today, she said she was excited to play in front of the people she plays for. Her transfer teammate Pilepic is out with a finger injury so their two other pins will be underclassmen. Other locals on the team are Snuka, Watanabe, and Killeen.

  27. cruisecontrol August 23, 2016 8:15 pm

So disappointed about not being able to watch Na Wahine home matches. I can’t imagine what kind of “legal issues” are preventing OC Sports from streaming the matches, but us expat fans on the mainland are caught in the middle. What a letdown.

  28. Bleachercoach August 23, 2016 8:49 pm

27…..so sorry for out of town fans and ohana plus IMO our OC Sports do the best job announcing and bringing the court right into your living room…Bummers!!

  29. Rosepetals August 23, 2016 9:20 pm

So people in Hawaii won’t be able to watch the games at their homes?

  30. Cindy Luis August 23, 2016 10:00 pm

    23. as mentioned, no streaming.
    24. have to disagree. Taylor hasn’t been 100 percent during beach seasons. some of it residual from indoor but also some knee stuff. Happens a lot to taller players or those who had major growth spurts.
    25. Mau missed the NCAA tournament with a concussion but she did play well for UA beach team. Watanabe transferred from The Beach.
    29. matches are on OC16 in Hawaii.
They are doing all six matches on TV.

    Libero/Defensive Specialists Preview:

    http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2016/8/23/womens-volleyball-plentiful-defensive-specialists-in-2016.aspx

My interpretation of what Hall said: Kahakai will be libero and has potential to play beyond college. Anderson is next in line as the libero and is the top defensive specialist. Ponce is a good teammate and hardworking player but is behind Anderson. Guinasso has great platform for passing but has to work on her feet. The freshmen are all great but probably won’t play this season because of the experienced upperclassmen. Okino was a pleasant surprise and probably more impressive than Smith. Ross is being converted to libero because at 5-10, she’s too small to play front row at UH. But she’s been practicing in the front row due to injuries.

  32. Hot August 23, 2016 11:25 pm

    17. Ron, agree with your projected starting lineup.

Additionally, I think it’s possible that Iosia and Koelsch will enter as double-subs on the right. Sibley will probably be a blocking sub for Granato or a sub for Greeley if she struggles. The trio of Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso will also get in at some point. I think Ross could play if anyone else is injured or ill. Likely that Okino and Smith will redshirt.

  33. soljah August 23, 2016 11:34 pm

Umm, where did it say that Castillo was training at OPP? I thought she moved over to Middle to fill in some holes?

Koelsch will start at OPP and this girl is a baller when the lights come on!

Disappointed in the injuries but no one can help that. I pray a speedy recovery to all and a very big “GO BOWS!”

  34. Haleiwacrossfitter August 23, 2016 11:43 pm

Emma smith could be our next Katie spieler. Katie didn’t play all indoors. But she was a freshman all American on the beach.

Emma smith is a very, very good beach player and if not making progress indoors, as Katie, she may choose just a beach career.

    My lineup
    OH – Sibley/Granato
    MB – Mags/Burns
    S – Higgins
    Opp – Castillo

I think if Castillo starts middle then Kendra at Opp. I think KG needs to rest if she can’t take full swings. Or DS duty only to get game minutes. Libero is obvious so I didn’t include it.

  35. Hot August 23, 2016 11:44 pm

    33. From Cindy’s post last August 22 in the comments section:
“Castillo was cleared to practice today. Practiced both at middle and OH. ”

Now, I’m not sure if OH meant Outside Hitter/Left Wing or Opposite/Right Wing, since Cindy has also been calling the Opposites as OH.

Whether it’s Castillo or Koelsch starting, I think both are going to play. I’m sad about the injuries, but at the same time, I’m excited to see these two get major court time. Burns too. And can’t wait to see Iosia. Would love to see Ponce and Guinasso contribute as well.

  36. Hot August 23, 2016 11:48 pm

    34. Yeah, too bad Spieler didn’t have the opportunity to contribute indoors. Let’s hope Smith takes on the libero job with ease. After all, Ponce is graduating and the trio of Kahakai, Guinasso and Anderson are juniors.

Hall says all the three freshmen DS are impressive, so let’s hope and pray they continue to make strides as the seasons go on.

  37. LanaiBoy August 24, 2016 5:01 am

In regard to streaming…the Big West requires all of its schools to provide video for their Big West matches. Some of the streams last year were pretty awful—just one camera facing the field with only the field/gym announcers voices heard. Some schools’ broadcasts like Long Beach State were pretty good. For the Mainlanders at least you will be able to view the conference matches. Too bad UH is not streaming the non-conference matches. As everyone knows, Hawaii has a huge base of fans on the Mainland.

  38. Cubicle1126 August 24, 2016 6:00 am

Let’s hope Taylor heals and recuperates quickly!

This is kind of what I’d like to see, assuming too that Greeley isnt ready to go this weekend …

    OH – Granato, Castillo
    MB -Maglio, Burns
    OPP- Koelsch
S – Higgins (or Iosia) whoever can helps us win!
    L – Kahakai

    Go Bows!

  39. Cubicle1126 August 24, 2016 6:07 am

Is it still possible that bigwest.tv will still stream the matches? They haven’t posted this week’s schedule yet …

  40. Rabbit ears August 24, 2016 6:25 am

Ross and Granato seems to be the same height. ?

  41. cruisecontrol August 24, 2016 6:30 am

37 – As I recall, last year when OCS stopped streaming UH home games, that included BW Conference games too for sports like M&W Basketball, Baseball, and Softball. I could be wrong, as these days my memory also stops streaming at times, but I hope you are correct and at least the BW home matches will be streamed.

  42. islandman August 24, 2016 7:25 am

Greeley wasn’t playing in the front during the scrimmage. Kendra will start at Opposite.

  43. islandman August 24, 2016 7:29 am

Correction, Greeley did play in the front, per stats.

  44. blunite August 24, 2016 7:32 am

@40 — The roster heights of the players are like approximations so I judge their height by viewing them in person. For example, Granato and Olevao were both listed as 6’0″ but standing side by side Olevao was a couple of inches taller. Taylor is listed as 6’4″ but standing next to Mitchem (6’3″) they look even. (The USA National Team listed Taylor as 6’3″.) Ross is listed as 5’10” but I haven’t seen her in person.

  45. kahuna August 24, 2016 7:40 am

Is it possible that UH stopped streaming the games cause OC Sports was not getting any kind of advertising revenue thru that format? The UH website was using the OC feed minus the commercials .

I think in the future…..UH should negotiate with OC to either set up a pay site for those who do not have cable….those who not watch much Tv(like me but I attend live games)….and those from out of state to watch.

It would also make it easier for parents of players to follow the kids from afar afar.

If OC won’t allow UH to use their feed UH should just stick a camera someplace

  46. LanaiBoy August 24, 2016 7:51 am

    41. Last year I watched women’s volleyball, basketball, and softball on the various Big West schools’ web sites. As I said before, it is a requirement for Big West Schools to have the major sports’ teams broadcast on-line. When Oceanic did not televise a match, UH did like other schools, providing a minimal tele-cast, a single fixed camera and with the only audio from stadium/gym announcers. Fortunately, Oceanic carried many of the Na Wahine matches and UH used its feed.

  47. tongo August 24, 2016 9:05 am

In regards to streaming matches, can we do a PR Blitz to OC Sports? They have always stream preseason matches in the past. Let’s inundate OC Sports with requests to stream the preseason matches! What do we have to lose? (No, I am not a Trump supporter!!)
