Sunday thoughts on UCLA? Early scores

Discussion started on previous thread so lets move it over here pre-match.

couple of things before that.

The Sibleys took photos on the court after the potluck. Already decked on in UH logo wear. Dad said they loved everything and that it was going to be the perfect fit for daughter.

While Burns’ break is healing nicely, they are going to give it another three weeks. She does removed the brace at times, she said, because it was giving her a rash.
Unless they really need her should something happen to other middles, IMO no sense playing her and burning a redshirt season. I’m really impressed with her demeanor and how she is so part of the team despite being somewhat limited for participation.

Mentioned on previous thread that Shoji was impressed with UCLA freshman setter.
And that Sealy was impressed with UH’s athleticism.

Much will depend on how well UH serves and passes, enabling them to get UCLA out of system and staying in theirs. Think you’ll see Mitchem more today just because she is such a big presence at the net. Shoji hinted at some lineup tweaking but didn’t give hints.

I hope UCLA plays really well and puts a strong challenge to our team. Even if we loose it will really help in the development of our team. From what I have seen this team has the most potential of any team in recent history. I have been critical of Tai but after these last two games her hitting has really come alive! With Taylor on the right and our strong middles all involved in the offense Tai becomes a strong weapon on the left if the defense cannot focus on her alone. I am not knowledgible enough to know all the improvements necessary to be an elite team but the potential seems to be there. Exciting game tonite coming.

UH can win if 1) they can adjust quickly (vs letting half a set go by) and 2) they remain focused after 20, even if they are ahead.

    Nice thoughts, kkv3000.

Am so impressed with the chemistry of the team especially seeing Olivia smiling and celebrating. So happy for her.

Interesting to see how Wahine will adjust to UCLA’s quick offense.

Like their new uniforms. Like to see what their going to have on today.
1 Agree with you on Tai. Use to complain to my friends about her but not anymore.

From all that I have seen so far this season it seems to me like Dave knows what he is doing. As I have said before Tai is very important for this team to be successful. I think Dave has handled her nicely. I know I haven’t given up on her.

With Felix (6’6″) and Frager (6’5″) guarding the middles, it might be more effective for Higgins to give our Ms quick, low sets rather than the high sets we have been asking for previously.

Blocking Felix and Frager successfully might require more rotations featuring Koelsch.

I’m looking forward to the challenge!

Frager is on the slow side, UH can outquick her.
I think if UH is on, they should win, UH has more firepower.

Would be a nice curveball for Dave to throw Mike Sealy if he were to move Magill to M2 and uses Mitchem as M1 to run the slide against UCLA which they weren’t able to scout much if any.

Mitchem has to be one. She is ready!

I don’t recall Olivia smiling and having such a good time last year, when she scored a point or a block. But this year she seems to be really enjoying herself.

    We’ll see what happens.

    11. Magill smiled and celebrated last year. But I think she is happier how she and the setters are connecting. They have worked hard on that.

A Stanford team without Inky and with an injured Merete would be like a Hawai’i team without Nikki and with an injured Olivia. But take nothing away from PSU’s servers for taking Stanford out of system time and time again, allowing Haleigh Washington to work her slide to perfection-destruction.

Looks like 2015’s PAC-12 title could come down to the final week of conference play: Arizona State (#2 in the conference’s coaches poll), Washington (#3), USC (#5), and Arizona (#7) are thus far sporting undefeated records.

[UCLA was picked to finish #8.]

    Iowa downs American, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19.
    Wahine should start on time.
