looks like this might be standfords year. Set #4 Cardinals really taking it to texas

  7. T103 December 17, 2016 6:25 pm

Congrats standford! Just wondering how everyone thinks UH would have done against Stanford if we managed to get to the finals?

  8. Cindy Luis December 17, 2016 6:28 pm

    Cardinal finishes it out 25-21.

  9. Ki December 17, 2016 6:31 pm

Congratulations cardinal. Glad it wasn’t a Big Ten school.

  10. jmy December 17, 2016 6:34 pm

Never count out the Pac-12! The youngest team wins it…who says you need experience!

  11. Big Island VB Fan December 17, 2016 6:47 pm

Congrats to Stanford, breaking a 12-year drought in the national championship. Inky surely infused faith and confidence in her youngest teammates. I’d like to see both Inky Ajaniku and Foluka Akinradewo play the role of middle blockers in the next USA Olympic team. They are both so dynamic and they are similar having played in different eras for Stanford.

  12. Ki December 17, 2016 7:01 pm

Any idea whose on the Wahine schedule next season Cindy (besides Big West & UCLA)?

  13. islandman December 17, 2016 7:33 pm

If you have height and are good, you win over the good shorter teams. Inky, 6-3; Plummer, 6-6; Fitzmorris, 6-6; Lutz,6-8; Vanjak, 6-4. I didn’t see the match, but Stanford didn’t need any service aces to win. Plummer, Fitzmorris, Gray and Hentz are frosh.

Here is the link to my final 20161217_NCAA WVB_Tournament Ranking and Results spreadsheet:
    https://1drv.ms/f/s!AgoVY4MJP0wagnGTEuORoQZT37gT

I’ve sorted it so the 16 seeds are at the top. It shows some interesting things which I’ll try to comment on later.

This spreadsheet is updated through tonite’s results. Note: this tracking spreadsheet comes with no assurance of accuracy and is in no way official. Do not rely on it. If you find any mistakes, please let me know; however, I offer no assurance I’ll be updating it.

  15. Bleachercoach December 17, 2016 11:10 pm

Oh Yes! I am glad the Pac-12 won it all.
If it wasn’t Hawaii, I truly wanted Pac-12.
Other than that I would wanted Minnesota, not Penn St, Wisconsin, Nebraska, or Texas.
4…that Libero was flying all over and picking up some huge kills. The way she moved from the backcourt for the dink shots were amazing. She will be in the Olympics one day.
    7. Are you kidding? With their huge “Wall of China” they would have a Block Party against us. Only Nikki and Annie can go OTT but even that may not have been enough. We could compete if healthy but Stanford would be too much for Hawaii this year (and maybe next couple of years). Plus their Libero would just vacuum up our shots.
13…I agree if you had a 6’3″, 6’4″, 6’6″,6’6″, and 6’8″ with just good skills and talent not many or any team can match that size….That’s some College D1 Basketball Men’s starting 5….
So happy for Coach Dunning. I remember the days playing PACIFIC and they were good too…

  16. warriorwahine December 18, 2016 1:44 am

    ive been mia as well.

    9. before this match, big ten was knocked out. guess russ rose and the big ten drank too much b1g k00l aid that they dont even have a shot in the championship match.
and contrary to popular belief the b1g aint the strongest conference, football maybe, but this isnt the fbs foot bull s… and then again alabama aint even a big ten team.

with stanford winning it, they just stuck it towards both b1g and penn st to dont forget about the west coast and it aint the bigs who gets it easy.

    13. and i bet some you bleacher coaches will still grumble about how hawai’i didnt get plummer or whoever, yall need to go do some recruiting for dave or on behalf of him.
no seriously, height is useful but it aint all that, they were visibly slower at 6’6 and above and the match was texas to drop 1st and 2nd set as well as get off to a slow start in the 4th so it could of gone either way. they also had to seriously fight back down 0-2 during the wisconsin match so the heavy if not heaviest tanks didnt exactly pour right through…just enough that with their heaviest armor and coming back 0-2 gives them the god immortal.

    15. their yuge ‘wall of china’ would be not be a block party against us…just got to play faster offense against them or sunder off the 6’6 and 6’8. their libero would be an issue that would challenge ‘ka-hawkeye’ though. other than that, their armor is maybe #1 big but is incredibly slow, not particularly maneuverable/error prone, and dont exactly possess a large gun to arm swing it down. look at micaya white who had a high velocity gun sunder plenty off the block and even blocked plenty herself as much as them at 6’1. and even if you want to argue stanford had the blocks, it was really all inky ajanaku at 6’3 not 6’6 nor 6’8.

As promised, some notes on the 2016 NCAA WVB Tournament RPI rankings, seedings, and results:

    The RPI Upsets:
    – There were 16 RPI upsets out of a total of 63 tournament matches, a 25.4% upset ratio.
    – Six of the RPI upsets were in the ranks of the 48 unseeded teams, or 12.5%
    – Ten of the RPI upsets were in the ranks of the 16 seeded teams, so the upset ratio among the seeded was 62.5%
    – Five of the ten RPI upsets among the seeded teams were to unseeded teams. Creighton-RPI 17, recorded two of these. The other unseeded to record upsets of the seeded were Arizona-RPI 36; Ohio St.-RPI 34; and Florida St.-RPI-22.
    – Five of the ten RPI upsets among the seeded teams were to other seeded teams. Stanford-RPI 11 and sixth seed, recorded three of these. The other seeded teams to record upsets were UCLA-RPI 12 and 10th seed, and Texas-RPI 4 and 4th seed.
    – RPI Upsets by round: 1st round, 6 of 32 matches (19%); 2nd round, 4 of 16 (25%); 3rd round, 2 of 8 (25%); 4th round, 1 of 4 (25%); 5th round, 2 of 2 (100%); 6th round, 1 of 1 (100%).

The Best of the Worst (or the Worst of the Best):
    – The highest RPI team to record a win was Washington St., Pac-12, RPI 43.
    – Washington St. was also by coincidence, the 43rd best RPI team in the tournament.

    The Losers:
    – Of the 21 teams with a worse RPI than Washington St., 17 were conference champions and auto qualifiers, and were the bottom 17 RPI teams in the tournament. These bottom 17 came from the following conferences: Colonial, Mid-American, ASUN, Southland, Ivy League, Patriot, OVC, Big Sky, Big South, Summit League, Metro Atlantic, Western Athletic, Southern, America East, Mid-Eastern, Southwestern, and Northeast. All were the lone representative of their conference in the tournament. None recorded a win.
    – In addition to the 17 bottom conference AQ teams that filled out the bottom of the tournament RPI list, there were three other one bid AQ conferences that recorded no conference wins, these were: Horizon (Cleveland St., RPI-37); Atlantic 10 (Dayton, RPI-28); Conference USA (Western Ky., RPI-14).
    – Missouri Valley Conference had three representatives, RPI 21, 44, and 45. None recorded a win.
    – Mid-American Conference had two representatives, RPI 40 and 51. None recorded a win.
    – In summary, 22 of the 32 tournament AQ teams (conference champions) recorded no wins. These 22 conferences provided a total of 25 teams that recorded no wins.

  18. noblesol December 18, 2016 5:34 am

Another note on the tournament. An interesting question is which conferences most underperformed based on RPI, and which most overperformed?

One way to measure it is to look at RPI upsets. A team that loses to a better RPI team is by that indicator at least, performing as expected. The RPI Upset, then, is a measure of underperformance (the upset team) and overperformance (the winning team). I’ll cancel those out one for one winning with losing RPI Upsets within a conference. Just looking at RPI Upsets, here are the underperforming and overperforming conferences in the tournament:

    The Good:
    Big East: 40% overperformance. [2-Teams, 5-Matches, 2-RPI Upset (W)]
    Mountain West: 40% overperformance. [3, 5, 2(W)]
    AAC: 33.3% overperformance. [2, 3, 1(W)]
    Pac 12: 17.4% overperformance. [8, 23, 1(L), 5(W)]

    The Bad:
    Big 10: 11.1% underperfomance. [8, 27, 5(L), 2(W]
    ACC: 12.5% underperformance. [3, 8, 1(L)]
    Big 12: 14.3% underperformance. [6, 14, 4(L), 2(W)]
    SEC: 25% underperformance. [4, 8, 2(L)]
    WCC: 25% underperformance. [2, 4, 1(L)]

    The Ugly:
    Atlantic 10: 100% underperformance. [1, 1, 1(L)]
    Conference USA: 100% underperformance. [1, 1, 1(L)]

The Rest: performed as expected by RPI.

I’ll take a look at under/over performance relative to seeding later; need a strong coffee break…

  19. islandman December 18, 2016 9:08 am

Stanford players are also smart, Inky :
“Earned her degree in human biology, working towards a master’s in biology
Contemplating a career as an orthopedic surgeon
Hobbies include cooking, biking and swimming
Full name is Oyinkansola OluSeun Ajanaku”

  20. jmy December 18, 2016 9:56 am

Stanford is big, no doubt, but their ball control is very good, and I was impressed by their ability to pick up the off-speed shots…

  21. blunite December 18, 2016 6:37 pm

The fickle wind of fate; passing, ball control, blocking, digging, hitting all come and go when least expected. Bad days, good days, both seem uncontrollable when one is under a lot of pressure/expectations.

Nice to have the title back on the west coast, but Dunning may not have been exaggerating when he said they will get 8 losses next year. Stanford did not look that great in their losses (and nearly losing to Wisconsin). Still, they do learn fast.

As always, regarding ranking, invitations, and seeding the NCAA decisions will continue to be perplexing. Outside of death and taxes, it is the one constant we can depend upon.

  22. tako December 19, 2016 8:31 am

2018 recruit Trinity Casteneda updated her highlight video featuring her 2016 high school play. If she stays the course and officially signs a LOI, she looks to be a good one; quick arm swing and has good hops – she’s a steal.

  23. livealoha December 19, 2016 8:50 am

Castaneda is a terminator. She has high potential, not sure how her back row game is though.

She and Liliana Light make a pretty good recruiting class already with two more scholarships to give.

  24. Ron December 19, 2016 10:48 am

I hope that Trinity stays the course. I thought that Mick Haley and the USC team’s tweet to Dave was very classy. There are so many wonderful people in the volleyball world and they are all winners as far as I am concerned.

    new thread up for Monday
    24. it was. For those on twitter, check out the video from Haley and SC player.
    here’s the tweet
A special message to @HawaiiWVB HC @DaveShoji from Mick Haley and the Women of Troy. Get well soon, coach! #FightOn and #GoBows

  26. Cindy Luis December 19, 2016 3:29 pm

    12. mentioned in my story two weeks ago
UCLA, Utah and likely BYU. Shoji said there were other teams but wasn’t going to name them until contracts are signed.
