Honorable mention to FAU and Georgia State pairs.

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its Beach Volleyball All-America Team on Wednesday. Among those honored on the first team were a pair of Rainbow Wahine, senior Katie Spieler and redshirt freshman Emily Maglio.

This is the second AVCA All-America honor for Spieler, who previously earned the distinction in 2014. In 2016, Spieler finished the season with a 22-8 record, extending her UH-leading career total to 102 victories. The Santa Barbara, Calif. native was named as part of the inaugural Big West Pairs Team of the Year. Spieler was also recently recognized with the Elite 90 Award, holding the top GPA among beach volleyball student-athletes at the NCAA Championships.

Her partner, Maglio earns her first All-America accolades and is the sixth player from the UH program to receive honors since the sport’s inception in 2012. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native achieved a 22-6 record in her first season on the sand, after earning first-team all-Big West honors during the indoor season. She joined with Spieler to earn three Big West Pairs Team of the Week honors, culminating in a Pairs Team of the Year Award, leading UH to the inaugural Big West Championship.

Together the pair earned a 21-5 overall record in leading UH to a Final Four finish at the first-ever NCAA Beach Volleyball Championships and an 18-10 overall team record.

The AVCA also announced its final Top 10 ranking of the 2016 season on Tuesday with inaugural NCAA champion USC claiming the No. 1 spot and the Rainbow Wahine ranked fourth.

Congratulations to both Katie and Emily. I predict Emily will make AA for indoors before her time at UH is up. One thing that surprised me was that she came to UH with out taking a campus visit. Good catch for Shoji and company.
Who will replace Katie next season, any clues?

LC ……I mean rabbit ears what do u mean?

Congrats to Mags and Katie. I think Mags can be UH’s first four time all american on the beach. Especially if she is paired up with Martin next year.

Congrats to Nikki on being selected to the USA Pan American Training Team. Wow, what a huge acknowledgement of her talent.

And to the greatest pound for pound beach college volleyball in the country – congrats Katie! You are simply the very best in all the land. Congrats Emily – you make Canada and Hawaii proud! Am looking forward to seeing how Emily’s new-found skills carry over to indoor.

    I expect:

    1. Taylor/Martin
    2. Maglio/Smith
    3. Rooks/Homayun

4 and 5 up for grabs. Tucker and Schutcht will probably be in one of the pairs though. But lots of talented freshmen coming in so who knows.

I don’t see Emma on the first two flights right off the bat could see her in flights 4/5

I see Martin with Maglio and Taylor staying with Shucht or with Tucker.
I think Luyties is the other freshman that could play in top 5 flights and I have a feeling Sibley will surprise and be really good on the beach like Maglio.

We dont know three recruits though they could be high level players.

Volleyball Magazine’s 2016 Fab 50 Boy’s list is out and Hawaii recruits Jack Reese (6’7″ MB) and Everett Schuett (6’6″ OPP/MB) made the list and so did Austin Matautia (6’4″ OH/OPP) who was ranked #4 overall.

Punahou’s Will Stanley (6’4″ S/OH) also made the list.

Second straight year with a top 5 recruit, hopefully next year will be 3 with jaylen jasper/gage worsley.

Even with those ranked volleyball guys I wouldn’t be surprised if the 6’8″ Opp Euro guy is the one who has the biggest impact. He already looks like a veteran international player on videos. Even against other big guys he’s hitting over and around and with tremendous velocity. And a lefty to boot. Can’t wait to see his name on a signed LOI and see him on campus next spring. And I was already excited to get Matautia. Mens college volleyball as a whole will have a ton of talent next season and it looks like Wade will keep the team competitive. Adding one imposing middle could get us back to the post season pretty quick.

UH isn’t a school that’s been associated with Jasper’s name but you would think Ivan’s son would at least give us a visit. A great athlete at 6’7″ who just pounds the ball would make us deadly at the pins. Who you gonna focus on with 6’8″ Stijn, 6’5″ Rosenmeier, 6’4″ Austin, 6’8″ Parapunov, and 6’7″ Jasper if he comes. The middles would be hitting against a single block all day.

Btw Wil Stanley headed to BYU had a great state tourney but his younger brother at Kaiser, Jon Jr. could end up being better. Just a soph I believe.

    11. from videos of Parapunov I would not be surprised if he is on the MPSF freshmen team or even possibly the Freshmen of the Year, especially since there seems to be no superstars like DeFalco,Ma’a.

  17. warriorfan May 13, 2016 9:30 am

I wonder if UH will announce the signing of Parapunov?

  18. kahuna May 13, 2016 4:11 pm

Wow….three of the recruits for men’s vball make the the Fab 50. I guess the other recruit(Jackson Van Eekeren) must either be a project. Good size dude at 6-6 though. Would probably be the tallest setter UH ever had.
