Mitchem making her first start It’s also Granato, Iosia, Taylor, Kahakai, Castillo, Maglio.

  2. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:03 pm

    Pepperdine is young and tall. 6-7, 6-5, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0. Libero Lishman from Punahou is 5-8
They run a 6-2 with Trent Dilfer’s daughter the other setter, she is 5-11

  3. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:05 pm

Ashley Harris transferred from Arizona. She is the daughter of former basketbow Rogue Harris.

  4. Warrior Dave September 16, 2016 7:05 pm

    Can’t wait to see Annie

  5. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:08 pm

    3. as well as the daughter of former Wahine basketball player Jeanne Wade Harris

  6. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:10 pm

Mitchem served, goes long. Replaced by Greeley in back row.

  7. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:15 pm

Pepperdine on a 4-0 run. takes the lead at 13-10. TO UH

  8. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:25 pm

Smith in for Granato in back row. Pepperdine up 22-18. TO UH

  9. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:26 pm

Not sure why the comment about Granato was deleted, but she has struggled tonight on serve receive. And that is being kind.

  10. z September 16, 2016 7:26 pm

That is why they are serving her.

  11. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:26 pm

And I am not piling on Granato, just making an observation without making a personal attack.

  12. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 7:27 pm

need smith – a libero by design

  13. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:29 pm

Taylor with an ace. Pepperdine still leading 24-21. TO Waves.
Thought they were going to use the challenge system tonight. could be wrong

  14. z September 16, 2016 7:29 pm

    Smith had a bad pass.

  15. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 7:29 pm

Ok no way pepperdine can keep hitting this well but wahine defense needs to step it up and Granato why are the coaches keeping her in the backrow to pass still??

  16. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:30 pm

    9. what comment?
Granato definitely continues to struggle. To overpasses ended up as Pepperdine points.

  17. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 7:30 pm

    14. not as bad as others.

  18. AlexM September 16, 2016 7:30 pm

Too many errors, both passing and blocking.

  19. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:32 pm

UH has closed to 24-23. on 3 kills by Taylor and her ace. TO Waves

  20. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:33 pm

WUJ, uncalled for. deleted and let it go

  21. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:34 pm

    16. Someone posted a comment about how Pepp was serving Granato and there were too many errors. Then the comment disappeared.

  22. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 7:35 pm

Annie needs to stay on the left although I’d love to see her do the step out.

  23. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:35 pm

    21. thanks didn’t see it but then my comments have’t been posting.

  24. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:38 pm

UH has fought off 8 set points. leads 28-27 for their first

  25. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:38 pm

Iosia with the ace. UH wins it 29-27

  26. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:39 pm

    23. No prob, it looks like the tech bugs are alive and well.

  27. z September 16, 2016 7:39 pm

    Annie does make a difference.

  28. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:40 pm

Well, now Pepp feels like UH did when Na Wahine blew its set lead against Washington. Before tonite, I didn’t think the team had the mental strength to come back from such a deficit. I hope they keep it up. Maybe a turning point for the season, although we still have a match to win.

  29. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:41 pm

    26. thanks again. Nice comeback for Hawaii on that one.
Pepperdine got swept at Arizona two weeks ago

  30. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 7:41 pm

any ace including delayed – works.

  31. AlexM September 16, 2016 7:41 pm

Well, that was fun! Hope our passing improves. I think the constant lineup changes also effects our passing and chemistry.

  32. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:41 pm

Pepperdine came in hitting .181, they ‘cooled down’ to .462 in Set 1

  33. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:42 pm

    27. It also helps that Pepp didn’t have an opportunity to scout/game plan for her. But she does stabilize the left and takes a lot of pressure off Nikki Taylor. Mitchem has more attempts than anyone else. Hitting .294 is great too.

  34. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:42 pm

    Again, Wop UR Jaws. Enough.

  35. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:43 pm

Three aces by Taylor and it’s 4-0 UH

  36. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:44 pm

Off speed by Taylor, 4 in a row. It’s 5-0 TO Waves

  37. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 7:44 pm

good job nikki – 4 of a kine aces

  38. wop ur jaws September 16, 2016 7:45 pm

Cindy, I apologize. It won’t happen again. Frustrated fan.

  39. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:46 pm

    Very bad rotation for Pepperdine.

  40. Warrior Dave September 16, 2016 7:46 pm

What a gutty set 1 win for our Wahine

  41. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:47 pm

    38. accepted. Play nice.

  42. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:50 pm

Maglio with a solo then 2 kills. It’s 12-2. TO Waves

  43. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 7:50 pm

thats what we need. more good serves with the spin serve including aces/forcing overpasses or bad passes.

  44. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:53 pm

Nothing to be frustrated about here in set 2. I think Pepp had the wind taken out of their sails. UH playing great to capitalize. If there is one area I’d like to see addressed, it is getting more to Castillo. But I understand there is only so much you can do. Also, to all those who downplayed a diversified offense, there has been a nice distribution among Taylor, Mitchem, Granato and Maglio.

  45. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:58 pm

Ponce with an ace, ends it 25-6. ouch

  46. z September 16, 2016 7:59 pm

    10 aces already.

  47. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 7:59 pm

    44. there has. Amazingly Taylor didn’t have a kill in Set 2 until making it 21-6.

  48. Maverick September 16, 2016 7:59 pm

Cindy, do you happen to know what is an opponent’s lowest score against UH in the rally scoring era? Six is pretty low.

  49. Warrior Dave September 16, 2016 7:59 pm

What a difference a set makes

  50. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:00 pm

I like this lineup alot, i’d love Smith to play backrow for Granato and Higgins as the serving sub, think this lineup can peak during the NCAA tourney and make another deep run!

  51. warriorwahine September 16, 2016 8:05 pm

    46. double digit aces!

    48. 2013 vs fullerton ali longo served up a 21-0 run. wahine won set 2 25-5 after kind of playing evenly in the first set with them. fullerton they were so miserable it made their poor setter cry.

    50. yes indeed.

  52. z September 16, 2016 8:11 pm

    Here we go again.

  53. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:14 pm

    51. Thanks. Since the current scoring format was instituted in 2008, UH has twice held opponents to five points in a non-fifth set. Riverside on 10/3/15, and on 9/27/13 against Fullerton as mentioned. On 8/24/12, UH held Albany to six points in a set.

  54. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 8:22 pm

    53. thanks. was just about to say 5.
UH up 15-12 at the TTO

  55. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:23 pm

    54. I went through the media guide during the game break, while waiting for set 3 to start.

  56. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 8:27 pm

Pepperdine closes to 19-17. TO UH

  57. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:29 pm

Still great distribution. Taylor only getting 27% of all attempts. Three players with 20+ attempts. Five players hitting at least .200. Very nice to see.

  58. z September 16, 2016 8:30 pm

    I like this rotation.

  59. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 8:30 pm

Maglio with another solo. it’s 21-17. TO Waves

  60. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 8:35 pm

Koelsch in. Maglio ends it 25-18.

  61. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:35 pm

Hope Annie opened up Daves eyes tonight , she looked good and she was probably rusty.

In the middle she would be lucky to have half as many hitting attempts.

  62. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:37 pm

Imagine how good Annie could be on the left by December.

  63. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:40 pm

    61. That’s a great point. If Annie is the superior terminator to Casey, then leave Casey in the middle and let Annie bomb away from the left. She will get more attempts and UH needs an effective alternative to Nikki Taylor.

  64. z September 16, 2016 8:41 pm

Mags had a good night too. 12 kills no errors, .750.

  65. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:44 pm

Now im bummed Dave didn’t take the rchanfe and play Annie on the left all of last year imagine how good she would be now.

  66. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:45 pm

    Chance*

  67. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:49 pm

The following stats help show how Annie stabilized the left tonight. As a team, UH had a total of 10 service errors, or 3.33 errors per set. Both figures are season lows. Recall that UH had over 8 per set versus UCLA.

Also, three players with 10+ kills, Taylor only took 29% of the team’s hitting attempts, middles hit .560 combined, and UH out hit, assisted, served and dug Pepperdine.

  68. Maverick September 16, 2016 8:50 pm

    67. Sorry, hitting errors, not service errors.

  69. AlexM September 16, 2016 8:54 pm

I’d still like to get a look at Annie in the middle. Both Burns and Casey have been ineffective at MH, so the blockers are ganging up on our LH’s. Annie could make it easier for the LH to score points. Our passing would need to improve, of course. I’d also like to see how Casey would do on the left.

  70. Warriorfan September 16, 2016 8:57 pm

Casey does better in the middle , she doesn’t have the explosiveness and power Annie has, so she needs perfect sets to be effective which will happen more in the middle ( she was real effective against UCLA)

  71. AlexM September 16, 2016 8:59 pm

I’m just wondering, because I thought she was recruited as an OH.

  72. tongo September 16, 2016 9:04 pm

Nice win – solid performance. It was great to see Mitchem in action as she hit some bombs. Annie puts up a huge block and knows how to keep the ball in play. The front-line of Mitchem, Maglio and Taylor is very formidable. Nice serving and ace by Ponce tonight.

  73. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 9:17 pm

    69. Mitchem in the middle only because Sibley is out. Sibley will be out again Saturday

  74. Maverick September 16, 2016 9:30 pm

    73. Too bad she isn’t at left permanently, or at least for the next few weeks. Sibley isn’t the answer at left, and I’m not sure Castillo should be shifted from the middle. I like that Mitchem can take 20+ swings per match, something that will be more difficult to do in the middle.

  75. Ron September 16, 2016 9:31 pm

Totally agree with your assessment of Castillo, Warriorfan . She can still be a very decent middle with a little more experience. All of Smiths passes were playable The same can not be said about Granato. (piggy backing on what both Maverick and the host mentioned) I would like to see Annie be the L1 and Sibley be the L2.
Annie was everything you could hope for. She not only played great but I think she helped elevate Nikki’s, Emily’s and Noreen’s game to a higher level. I have never seen them have so much fun!

  76. Bleachercoach September 16, 2016 9:37 pm

Great return of Annie!! She makes a difference with her return…After observing for 10 matches this year I conclude this is the lineup to take us a long way into the postseason:
    S/Iosia
    OPP/ Taylor
    LS/ Mitchem
    M/Maglio or Castillo
    DS/ Smith
    That’s how I would start them…
I would rotate Granato into the front row for Smith. It is useless to keep Granato back there…We don’t need 4 offensive weapons…I would sacrifice having a more reliable passer to start back there to get the offense into a better rythmn.
We always seem to be come back to Smith in crucial moments…Why wait?
Now that Sibley, Ross, and Burns got PT during the pre-season they add more depth. We have 3 setters that all have great experiences in big moments…Claire and Baby G are also very good DS if needed. We also have a Ponce that could come in for a serve to throw the other team off.
And we have Maafala, the vocal leader with such a great attitude bringing zest to her team….Lastly we have 4 great coaches with tons of expertise….Let’s do it!

  77. Bleachercoach September 16, 2016 9:38 pm

    I LOVE the Coca-Cola!!! Yes!!!

  78. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 9:47 pm

    74. we’ll see if it’s permanent. Mitchem said she likes being on the outside. Good problem to have. They like Sibley but if Mitchem’s going to be more effective and Castillo can do a decent job there, why not?

  79. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 9:51 pm

Did ask Shoji what being able to run the middle like they did with Maglio did. He said he’d like it to be their first option. (Of course that hinges on passing). Said he thought they did a better job on the tip. it was something they focused on this week.

  80. islandman September 16, 2016 9:53 pm

Castillo was blocking good tonight. Tiff said only Ross and Burns did not play.

  81. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 9:55 pm

  82. Cindy Luis September 16, 2016 9:55 pm

Not sure who is playing Saturday but alumnae match at 5 p.m.

  83. sharene September 16, 2016 10:35 pm

    Cindy,
I just mentioned the doctor because there was a lot of talk about the coaches making Nikki play when she was hurt last week. If there is a doc on the sidelines, I thought she should make the call based on medical soundness rather than the coaches. I mentioned the phone only because that is how I learned of her presence. I am sorry I was so unclear.

  84. Maverick September 16, 2016 11:02 pm

    79. Glad you mentioned the tip defense. I noticed a clear improvement as well. And a lack of complaining about tipping on this thread, lol.

  85. Andy September 17, 2016 12:04 am

Keeping Annie outside looks like a defense for offense trade off as Castillo still seems to be learning the MB position defensively. However, she holds her own hitting from the middle and Annie looked like a force on the left tonight. It will be interesting how consistent she proves to be, and whether Castillo can learn the MB position if the coaches decide to stick with this.

  86. setaone September 17, 2016 6:51 am

Glad Annie proved me wrong and did excellent against a very good Pepperdine team.

  87. Connor September 17, 2016 7:04 am

I agree that mitchem should permanent left side. Castillo in middle. Let her develop. Sibley as other left side. Smith in for sibley in back row. Sit granato. Too inconsistent. Let both middles serve to not use up subs. We will have team with size to challenge big girls.

  88. kahuna September 17, 2016 7:58 am

#83…….I believe there was a doctor on the sidelines. I glanced over to the bench during the timeout to see Renee work on Nikki’s arm and Dr. Elizabeth Ignacio was behind the bench.

Players /coaches usually make the final decisions on non-head injuries cause everybody’s pain threshold is different.

    This is really a non-issue.

  89. oldtimer808 September 17, 2016 8:20 am

#76 I guess you don’t like Kahakai. Kahakai is doing a great job at libero. As far as what the coaches should do or shouldn’t do, I’m glad all you wannabe coaches have a forum to express yourselves because that is as far as it will go. I have all the confidence in our coaching staff to know better what to do and who to use and where.

  90. Hot September 17, 2016 8:43 am

    89. Good for you, but I don’t see fans giving opinions on the players as being “wannabe coaches.”

Opinion on Kahakai: I don’t think she’s doing such a great job. When people are complaining about the passing, it isn’t just Granato or Greeley. Kahakai shanks a good number of balls. And let’s be honest, she can be a bit slow at times. She has a hard time with the tips.

Count me in among those baffled by Shoji’s decision to stay with Granato in the back row when she is giving up a lot of points with her passing, and they don’t really use her for the back row attack. Meanwhile, he is willing to burn two subs on Mitchem/Sibley’s back row substitutions. I think Smith playing back row for Granato should be a more regular occurence. If they are trying to limit their substitutions and insist on a serving sub plus Greeley for Mitchem, they can eliminate the serving sub for Maglio. Maglio is not a liability as a server.

  91. Hot September 17, 2016 8:50 am

How many players will they bring for the Big West road trips? If it’s 14, it will likely include
    Taylor
    Maglio
    Castillo
    Iosia
    Mitchem
    Granato
    Greeley
    Kahakai
    Sibley
    Burns
    Koelsch or Higgins or both?
    Smith or Anderson or both?
    Ross, Ponce or Guinasso?

  92. Maverick September 17, 2016 9:29 am

From the coach’s mouth: “Right now, I wouldn’t change anything,” Shoji said. “We were more balanced and I hope to be balanced again tomorrow and stay with what we’re doing.” From Cindy’s article. Again, a diversified offense is superior to one dominant hitter, particularly one who is not 100%.

  93. Ron September 17, 2016 9:42 am

Agree mostly with Hot. I would never want to be a coach but I enjoy reading others’ speculations as well as adding my own slant as to possible scenarios this deep and multi-talented team has to offer. I do think that Kahakai contributes a great deal with her defensive digs. I also think Guinasso is better than Anderson this year. This has nothing to do with the coaching staff. I wish Dave would stay forever!

89 – pet peeve of mine is people coming into fan forums then complaining about fans posting their opinions.

  95. tongo September 17, 2016 10:09 am

Yeah, Granato is clearly struggling big time with serve receive. IMO, Dave sees her, and probably Sibley, as important core future players that need to be developed this year. While both will continue to struggle this year, the payoff will come next year when Nikki and Annie are gone. Both appear to be hard working, passionate, and teachable. Both are improving weekly.

  96. tongo September 17, 2016 10:12 am

#94 So true – as I have found myself doing it. You have properly humble us!

  97. Tsboy September 17, 2016 10:25 am

I would like to see how Annie does in the middle. She does seem like she could be a terminator on the left, but I would like to see how her blocking is as a MB. Blocking can change the tone of an entire match and right now, Castillo is just not a good enough blocker. I agree Granato should be subbed out of the back row, although after the two oversets in the first game, she did a lot better. But she is a better hitter than Sibley. She hits a way heavier ball. I also don’t understand why Dave keeps putting Greeley in the back row when she cannot hit the ball and you have DSs that can pass and dig better than her. A DS and a libero or two DSs in the back would be a lot better for us defensively. That’s what UCLA does I think.

  98. tongo September 17, 2016 11:25 am

Yeah, Greeley had some very uncharacteristic hiccups and whether she can recover enough is still up in the air. Dave clearly believes she will. For me, if Kalei is willing to give up a year of eligibility because she believes she can contribute, I think we owe it to her to see it through. Dave clearly trust her in the moments that counts – and that tells me all I need to know about how important she is to the team.

  99. Warriorfan September 17, 2016 11:35 am

I am gonna sound like a broken record but hope Emma plays more she needs to develop she will be important in the post season when we face teams with huge bangers , she has the ability to not only pass better than both Greeley and Granato but also get some crazy digs, not sure why the coach only brings her in when passing is conpletely off.

  100. noblesol September 17, 2016 11:38 am

Great to see the offense show some balance and good distribution last night. With Annie back, they can continue to build on that, wherever they wind up playing her. They have so many more options with her back. If Greely heals up enough for front row duty, then, wow. Then it gets really fun.

I thought Greely had an excellent night in the back row. She dug a lot of tough balls, popped up more than a glut of tips and roll shots, and turned a very high percentage of them into great passes. IMO, she out shined all the DS’s last night. I’m glad they’ve been using her in the back row, even though I think they shouldn’t hesitate to pull her if she’s having a rough night, but that’s a sub rule that should apply to everyone on the court. Eventually I believe she will regain strength and range of motion in her shoulder. Maybe not 100% this year, but enough to be a front row factor at the end. And she has her senior year yet ahead of her which I’m 100% looking forward to seeing her perform better than she ever has.

  101. Warriorfan September 17, 2016 11:48 am

As far as Annie going back to the middle I say keep Casey there. One reason is if there is one position that will get the least anount of sets (even with perfect passings) it’s M2, so Casey Not being a big offensive threat won’t hurt UH much if she stays at M2 and her blocking is improving slowly each match.
meanwhile having a big banger like Annie on the left , if she and Nikki are on and Granato has a match like Arizona , UH can win it all even against Nebraska.

  102. Maverick September 17, 2016 12:10 pm

    93. Lol

General question: does the limit on substitutions play a role in not subbing out Granato in the back row? If they sub her out, does that mean someone else normally subbed out would now have to play in the back?

If not then it isn’t surprising that Granato played in the back during the last two sets. Shoji did the same with TMO last year–replacing a struggling passer only temporarily.

  103. Maverick September 17, 2016 12:10 pm

    Sorry lol to 94

  104. haleiwacrossfitter September 17, 2016 12:36 pm

Love the coverage of the tips last night! Fantastic!

Annie needs to stay on the left. Finally a left side terminator. Tai and Greeley were ok, but we have not had a terminator on the left since Hartong. Annie needs to stay there. Castillo is holding her own in the middle.

Once KG gets 100%, which I hope will be by mid conference, put her in for Granato.

And SMITH NEEDS TO PLAY!!!!!! back row for Annie or one of the middles. But she needs to be on the court.

Hoping this lineup comes to fruition by mid conference season. This would be a great offensive and blocking team. Other than Burns, tallest lineup we could have out there, and I feel will be our best overall team to get us to the F4 or even NC.

    S – Iosia
    Opp – Nikki
    OH1 – Mitchem
    Oh2 – Greeley
    M1 – Mags
    M2 – Castillo
    Lib – Kahakai

DS should be: Smith, Guinasso and Anderson. In that order. Sorry Ponce

  105. Ron September 17, 2016 12:39 pm

Say it isn’t so Maulia, I really liked the guy.

  106. Maverick September 17, 2016 1:24 pm

    104. For a healthy team and assuming Annie continues to produce on the left, then I agree completely with your lineup.

    105. You mean the former men’s vball player who was arrested?

  107. Ron September 17, 2016 1:42 pm

Yes, a very hard worker who got to be pretty good. He was a volunteer coach. I don’t get it except for the part about men being idiots when it comes to women.

  108. Maverick September 17, 2016 2:16 pm

    107. Men can be idiots anytime. Like lying about being held up in a foreign country and in the process embarrassing the USA.

  109. Cindy Luis September 17, 2016 2:21 pm

    83. still don’t understand the ‘wqving the cellphone, security” thing. There is a trainer on the sidelines. Don’t believe she is flashing her cell around. Dr. Ignacio is there but I’m not sure where she sits.

    91. 14 for the Big West.

    97. again, the plan was for Mitchem to be in the middle but Sibley’s illness changed things. Easier to put Mitchem into her slot than move Taylor to the left and MAYBE use Ross on the right. Things may change next week.

    98. Too late for Greeley to redshirt.

    99. you do.

107> La Barre was arrested in April
A Honolulu police officer was arrested Tuesday night in Waikiki on suspicion of attempted bribery, prostitution and the unauthorized use of a computer, according to statements from Hawaii law enforcement agencies.
last report was he wasn’t charged. I’m sure others might know more.

    94. pet peeve of mine is regarding posters having unrealistic expectations for 18-22 year olds, demanding they be perfect every play.

  111. Ron September 17, 2016 2:41 pm

I didn’t know about April, it was in the Star-Advertiser today. P.S. Good example and on point, Maverick.

  112. sharene September 17, 2016 2:46 pm

    Cindy,
It was no big thing except the fan who eyes hurt had a migraine. The doc had a cell phone in her hand. It was face up so the phone caught the lights like a mirror would and cause temporary blindness. The fan told security to ask her to stop because it was hurting her eyes. That’s all. It really had nothing to do with security except to use the usher/security as a messenger as you can’t go on the floor.

The doc was only mentioned because many people last week were commenting about Nikki being injured so I mentioned that that there was a doctor if needed.

Some interesting scores: SDSU swept Beach, TCU beat UNC in 5, Boise St. beat ASU in 4…

  114. tongo September 17, 2016 4:43 pm

Moving Mitchem to OH is a winner. Nevertheless, if Annie moves to MH, she will represent a very creditable threat that will likely freeze the opposing block much more, giving the pins more one on one situations. Granato, Castillo, and Sibley will benefit, as well as getting lots of reps at OHs to mature, as they will carry the load next year. If our backcourt can keep the ball in system at a high level, we will rock.
