    Hi Cindy,

One thing I thought of, regarding the beach pairings for this weekend, is that Iosia and Kahakai will be participating in the USA Volleyball try outs and not available for beach this weekend.

  2. Cindy Luis February 28, 2017 7:00 pm

    1. don’t think that played into the decision.besides Kahakai no longer on the beach team. mentioned that several weeks ago.
Starting for Hawaii Maglio, Castillo, Iosia Burns, Kahakai, Smith, Granato.

  27. Cindy Luis February 28, 2017 9:44 pm

    16. a little rusty but it will come along

Besides Iosia and Kahakai going to the OTC for USAV tryouts, so are Mitchem and Granato.

  28. rabbits ears February 28, 2017 9:48 pm

Thanks for the updates. Couldn’t make game tonight.

  29. Blunite February 28, 2017 10:23 pm

Osaka reminds me that volleyball is a thinking game. The object is not to hit as hard as you can, but to put the ball where it will touch the floor. Remarkable competition from Osaka.

  30. noblesol February 28, 2017 10:32 pm

Osaka was having its best runs when they were hitting it as hard as they could, tooling the block over and over and over and over…

  31. noblesol February 28, 2017 10:39 pm

I’d qualify the statement that Iosia is the ‘best setter’ with she’s the best over long stretches. Tonight she also had some stretches where she was just bad left, bad right, and ignored her middle so she could give another trap set to Sibley stretch. It was those stretches that they couldn’t bring in Kendra soon enough.

  32. warriorwahine February 28, 2017 10:52 pm

worth the price of admission. gave us a full 5 set show with wahine turning it up on the 5th set.

after dominating the first set, wahine decided to kick back on the second and had to come back.

third set showed using kendra as opposite and casey as middle is doable but not effective. wahine gave the set to have extra show.

fourth set wahine was still asleep but didnt just simply give it away. another extra show (though not really necessary.)

fifth set after savanah won the toss, she gave it to osaka because wahine knew it was no more holding back.

a final note, treyannalee appears to serve direct bullets without having to topspin serve.

say cindy at the end what did jeff, treyannalee, norene, and savanah had to say giving you an interview? is it to include tomorrows paper?

  33. noblesol February 28, 2017 10:57 pm

I liked Castillo at Opposite. She was effective, clearly owned the spot tonight. Just needs the reps to sharpen her shots.

  34. warriorwahine March 1, 2017 12:41 am

    33. agreed.

also to piggy back on treyannalee serves direct bullets. when somebody makes their first an ace like that? you bet.

of course norene did the same vs wisconsin last year. cant wait to see more of her nice hands, nasty serve.

and wahine have their hands full come minny mid march. they will need some ace including from some of that nasty serve.

  35. setaone March 1, 2017 5:31 am

Wow. Great news about Mitchem. She wasn’t on the initial list of athletes. Do you know if she was invited and which position is she trying out for? Thanks for the info

  36. H-Man March 1, 2017 6:30 am

My Live Stats feed stopped working/updating in the 5th set, score tied 7-7. Anyone else have this problem?

  37. Hot March 1, 2017 7:43 am

Why didn’t Ma’afala play? Was she not eligible?

I’m surprised Okino only played in one set. Hall was very high on her during the position breakdown article last year. It seemed he liked her better (skill-wise) than Smith and the other veteran DSs.

  38. Ron March 1, 2017 7:59 am

Smith is an elite level DS and will be taking over for Kahakai next year.

  39. tako March 1, 2017 8:23 am

Playing Osaka maybe a great learning experience if parlayed into improved play for next season. Being smaller has it challenges and Osaka demonstrated how the lack of size maybe overcome. Believe these Spring games (good teams with different strengths) are a blessing. It’ll show each player what they have to improve on during the off-season.

Think we have good athletes and a balanced team for next season. -Go Wahine

  40. Blunite March 1, 2017 8:24 am

Hawaii’s perimeter-wide defense seemed more compact, with better anticipation. Although not perfect it may improve last season’s low conference dig total.

  41. pacesetterhawaii March 1, 2017 9:07 am

Hey guys, let’s rally up on Off The Block/Springbak, Inc. National Player of the Month. Finalists Stijn van Tilburg and Jennings Franciskovic are in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Fans can vote for one of them every hour until 11:59 EST Thursday. Either one of them can be the National Player of the Month for February.

  42. jm2375 March 1, 2017 9:30 am

#41 – dang, gotta choose one of them. How to choose??????? They’re both deserving.

  43. Cindy Luis March 1, 2017 10:16 am

    31. didn’t say Iosia was the “best” Said she was the “better” setter when compared to Koelsch.

    32. don’t think they kicked back. I think Osaka adjusted and also Hall changed up a few things, including rotating where Maglio started in the rotation.
Some of the runs came when Maglio wasn’t in the front row. Burns continues to be a bit lost out there.
As for Set 5, Kahakai chose side because that’s what is normally done. You want to be on serve-receive to start. But, as I quoted her in my story, she did give a little pep talk to her team before Set 5.

    33. agree that Castillo looked better on the right. She is athletic. what has been holding her back IMHO is her hesitation to be as mobile as she was un high school before her injury. Not sure if she is still bothered by those leg cramps from fall.

    36. there was a glitch with the livestats at 7-7. the wireless went out in the arena as well.

    37. Ma’afala couldn’t play without her using up a season of eligibility. just the way the rules work.
not sure what match you were watching. Smith clearing the better of the DSs, and they have five of them. Felt Guinasso played well too.

Et al: it’s early. they’ve only been in the gym for a few days as the 20 hours of spring practice only recently started. too early for all this criticism. they know what they need to work on. plus this isn’t the team that will be in the gym come August. We will see how much the incoming freshmen can contribute.
