Hawaii 3, Ohio 0

Not really surprised. Mendoza scheduled to start at libero instead of Kahakai.

For those playing along at home, Passi will be wearing No. 3 tonight. not sure if that is a permanent change. Might be just this set of uniforms. She is listed at No. 12 elsewhere.

    Thanks for the update.

  2. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 7:16 pm

Lori Santi said, the Wahine will win less then 25 matches, Tsuji says, the Wahine will win more then 25 matches. He also mentioned that this team kind of reminds him of the 2004 team that went 30-1. That team had to replace 7 seniors, had 1 transfer in Victoria Prince, and a sophomore setter in Kamana’o.

  3. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:21 pm

not sure what that’s supposed to mean but OK.
Her daughter is the senior setter for UCSB

  4. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:36 pm

good crowd so far. on another thread someone mentioned that you can pick up streaming on Bigwest.tv. Hope that helps.

  5. warriorfan August 29, 2014 7:39 pm

Jeez not a good start for Mendoza and Higgins.

  6. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:41 pm

2 aces already for Ohio. after UH took a 3-0 lead, Ohio up 8-4. TO UH

  7. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 7:48 pm

Slopping 1st match, looks like a sloppy 2nd match, also. Must be first match jitters.

  8. warriorfan August 29, 2014 7:49 pm

Kalei Adolpho looks great, wanna see Greeley in sometime this match.

  9. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:49 pm

TV timeout UH up 15-11. Adolpho 3-0-3 on the slides.

  10. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 7:50 pm

One thing is evident so far, Adolpho does look quicker and seems to have more power behind her spikes.

  11. warriorfan August 29, 2014 7:55 pm

So far, not impressed! Hope they pick it up.

  12. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:56 pm

    Greeley in at 18-18

  13. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 7:59 pm

Adolpho on another block. ties it at 21 TO Ohio

  14. Z August 29, 2014 8:02 pm

    Thank god for Adolpho.

  15. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:03 pm

Higgins wins the joust UH wins 25-22

  16. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:03 pm

Okay That was way too many attempts for Long in that first set, and she is mostly not delivering.
Magill needs to get involved! Higgins needs to set her more!

  17. uhfan August 29, 2014 8:05 pm

For all the hype of how improved Manu -Oleavao and Long were I was not impressed sorry to say. This starting lineup will not win a lot of games IMO. Was impressed by Adolpho and our block. Magill needs to get more involved next game and the OH need to do better. I hope Greeley starts the second set.

  18. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:05 pm

    16. Long was THE only option on some plays. There were very few opportunities to set Magill.

  19. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:06 pm

The Wahine need a Terminator on the Outside. Good thing though, the Outsides are keeping the ball in play, not making unforced errors.

I can eventually see Kahakai becoming the Libero, switching with Mendoza. Kahakai’s receiving, and passing, is right on, especially her passing.

  20. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:07 pm

    17. good lord people. it’s one set.

  21. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:08 pm

    We have high expectations,sorry.

  22. uhfan August 29, 2014 8:08 pm

    A very ugly first set

  23. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:08 pm

Right now, the connection between Higgins and Magill, not quite there. Higgins setting Magill a little to low.

  24. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:10 pm

I actually wanna see how Koelsch would do for a bit, Higgins not off to a good start.

  25. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:13 pm

    you won’t see Koelsch in.

  26. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:14 pm

Seriously, everyone needs to have patience. The level of play is what one would expect from a team that lost so much from last year.

  27. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:20 pm

Manu=Olevao with a rocket then a tip. Magill on the overpass. UH up 15-13 at the TTO

  28. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:21 pm

25, too bad She might be better at setting Magill.

I do like Higgins serve though.

    26. Seriously why can’t people post that they aren’t impressed?? It’s not like they are playing ASU, which I’m worried about tomorrow night if they play like this.

  29. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:23 pm

So far, all the mistakes that I can see, are fixable. No real glaring problems. On the plus side, this team looks quicker, and also, looks like a better blocking team. Front row, touching a lot of balls.

  30. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:24 pm

    18. Seriously, why be so critical after 30 minutes with basically a new team. you knew it was going to be ragged.

  31. Insider August 29, 2014 8:25 pm

It looks like Annie Mitchem is on her official visit this weekend to UH. The Irvine Valley website shows she had a tripple double and hit above .500 in their win over #2 ranked NAIA Concordia Irvine…. Impressive. She and Magill will be deadly next year

  32. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:26 pm

Kahakai with the campfire ace. UH up 20-18. TO Ohio

  33. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:27 pm

    28. Your expectations are unrealistic. If you don’t like getting criticized, then don’t post. A lot of us have very thick skin.

  34. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:27 pm

    31. agree

  35. Z August 29, 2014 8:27 pm

    McGill looks really quick.

  36. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:28 pm

If there is one player that has lived up to the hype it is Kahakai. She can play. Shoji has his Libero for the next 4 years.

  37. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:28 pm

so i was wrong. Koelsch in. but not the rotation that will use Magill. she’s in with Adolpho.

  38. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:28 pm

    29. If the outsides aren’t terminating against this very poor Ohio team IMO ( except for Tai who is doing okay) , they will struggle against the top big west teams as well. Hope Nikki gets healthy soon.

Im not even being that negative just calling it like I see it.

  39. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:29 pm

    There’s been a Koelsch sighting…

  40. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:29 pm

    Good to see kendra in.
She has very nice sets, to the outside.

  41. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:33 pm

surprised up ref called Long for a lift. since he’s let so much go. UH up 23-21. TO Wahine,

  42. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:34 pm

Long hits wide. Greeley in. Manu=Olevao on the pipe. 24-22. TO Ohio

  43. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:35 pm

Wow, Ali Longo, Robyn Ah-Mow Santos, and Kevin Wong, boy Shoji has built himself a coaching staff.

  44. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:36 pm

28, I have no problem being criticized, go ahead and My expectations of UH beating this Ohio team easily at home are not off base at all. They shouldn’t struggle this much IMO. This is Ohio’s first match as well. Hope Uh comes off playing much better in the third, I wanna see what Greeley can do in the front row.

    36. Tai looks a lot better offensively, she’s also hitting much higher.

  45. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 8:36 pm

Set ends on 2 SEs, first by Greeley, then Ohio’s setter. 25-23

  46. uhfan August 29, 2014 8:39 pm

Manu-Oleavao and Magill played better second set. Who is Passi’s back up? Is it Huff?

  47. Insider August 29, 2014 8:39 pm

    43. Ali Longo, Robyn AhMow, and Scott Wong to be exact.. Still a great staff

  48. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:40 pm

Warriorfan, have you and I switched places. You being negative, and I being positive. 🙂

  49. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:41 pm

    44. There is no basis for expecting UH to not struggle after losing so much from last year. Most of the starters are either backups or new players. And Ohio is not a slouch. Also, UH is missing Nikki Taylor.

  50. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:42 pm

    31. Good to know, I hope Mitchem verbals before she leaves.

  51. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:42 pm

    48. I noticed that too. Are you feeling well?

  52. Mark August 29, 2014 8:42 pm

wow…mendoza already got 16 digs and kahakai 8…

  53. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:43 pm

Uhfan, I think right now, it is either Long, or Olevao, who backs up Passi. Huff is not quite ready for floor time, right now.

  54. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:45 pm

team hitting .162, not good at all. Not being negative, just stating the obvious. Long and Passi need to pick it up or be replaced by Greeley.

  55. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:47 pm

According to Ryan Tsuji, Robyn want Higgins to set Magill quicker, right now Higgins is floating her sets to Magill, is what Robyn is telling her.

  56. uhfan August 29, 2014 8:48 pm

    53. Koelsch is a good RS hitter. I dont know why she cant do double duty IF she’s needed.

  57. uhfan August 29, 2014 8:49 pm

Hoping the wahine get off to a quick start the 3rd set. They’ve been slow in the first two.

  58. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:56 pm

Okay time to give Greeley a shot in the front court!

  59. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 8:57 pm

Greeley in for Passi. Greeley playing RS.

  60. Maverick August 29, 2014 8:57 pm

    58. Looks like you are getting your wish.

  61. warriorfan August 29, 2014 8:57 pm

It pains me that all of Olivia’s sets are way too low for her, it’s like foluke on the national team. just set her higher she can elevate over everybody.

  62. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 9:02 pm

I am thinking, with everyone talking about Magill, it has gotten Adolpho mad, the way she is outplaying Magill.

  63. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 9:03 pm

Ohio takes a 15-14 at the TTO

  64. Beauston August 29, 2014 9:03 pm

    60. That is if she gets any balls at all

  65. warriorfan August 29, 2014 9:04 pm

    62. That’s ridiculous.

Anyway Higgins is struggling to set Magill correctly. ugh.

  66. Maverick August 29, 2014 9:06 pm

    62. +1

  67. Maverick August 29, 2014 9:07 pm

    Sorry, I meant 65. +1

  68. warriorfan August 29, 2014 9:11 pm

Okay FINALLY Higgins gets up a great set for Olivia, and Finally Kalei G gets her first career UH kill and she looked good doing it.

  69. Ki August 29, 2014 9:12 pm

    Yes!! Finally got Magill involved.

  70. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 9:14 pm

Lily K., Kari Ambrovich, and Martina Cincerova, in the House.

  71. warriorfan August 29, 2014 9:15 pm

    That ‘s not Martina lol
    obviously it’s Angelica L.

  72. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 9:15 pm

    UH wins 25-20
Fan phones if you want to 296-1420

  73. Maverick August 29, 2014 9:15 pm

    Ugly win.

  74. Mark August 29, 2014 9:18 pm

Its the first match…give the girls a break…they have so much to improve…way to o bows!…

  75. Z August 29, 2014 9:18 pm

    Mendoza 24 digs.

  76. warriorfan August 29, 2014 9:18 pm

They have to improve fast, cause ASU will be much much tougher, and UH really needs that win.

  77. Mark August 29, 2014 9:19 pm

    I think Mendoza made a statement tonight…24 digs in just 3 sets…just wow…

  78. islandman August 29, 2014 9:26 pm

Adolpho played really well tonight, when i was watching on tv. But she played really well last year vs. Texas too.

  79. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 9:38 pm

What I liked about the Wahine, is the way they played “D”, and also, the front line being able to Touch, a lot of balls. First match, NO Physical errors, just some Mental Ones. The Mental Ones can be fixed.

  80. Setaone August 29, 2014 9:44 pm

    Hope Passi can produce.

  81. Brandon August 29, 2014 10:00 pm

Jesus people, you make like hawaii is supposed to be a top ranked team. News flash, their entire lineup besides 2 are new and they are out of their best player in Taylor. Taylor comes back UH will be better. Stop being so hard on a new team. They swept and won, that’s all that matters

  82. LanaiBoy August 29, 2014 10:04 pm

Hey. Ohio won its conference last year and expects to win it this year. Did not expect Ohio to roll over as seems to be the expectation of those commenting. It was a good test for the Wahine. As expected the match was a bit ragged at times. The Wahine will do well if Long and Manu-Olevao hits about .230 and Taylor maintains her high hitting average of last season, .287. The middles will be its strength this year, with both Adolpho and Magill quick and athletic and gifted hitters and blockers. The defense will be the Wahine’s strength as usual. I thought Long did well considering she received almost all the garbage sets. Passi did not have a good match but it may have been because of opening night jitters.

  83. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 10:08 pm

There could be 4 Punahou alumni on the court tomorrow night. 3 on Hawaii, and 1 on ASU.

  84. volleyballfan August 29, 2014 10:13 pm

Would not be surprised if Kalei Greeley starts in place of Passi against ASU. Reason being, ASU has a few tall Outside Hitters. Also, Greeley needs to see the court more, since she will be starting on Sunday in place of Tai Manu-Olevao.

  85. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 10:13 pm

    83. actually, it would be alumnae … female plural.

  86. Brandon August 29, 2014 10:19 pm

Mendoza played lights out today. 24 digs in a 3 set match is amazing and kahakai does not play like a freshman. She’s so confided on the court. I think she’ll be an AA or at least HM, by the time she graduates.

  87. rosepetals August 29, 2014 10:26 pm

Mendoza and Kahakai were very good at digging the balls! Kahakai was the only one on Hawaii with aces as well. Hope Long does even better, felt kind of bad ’cause she hit like 30+ plus balls

  88. warriorfan August 29, 2014 10:26 pm

    83. There won’t because McCready from ASU is injured.

  89. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 10:31 pm

See new thread if you want to continue discussion.
    62. Adolpho did not get mad that Magill got attention.
    Echo the ridiculous.
Adolpho has had more time to get used to Higgins’ setting. Plus Adolpho was getting set on the slide, with one blocker up. Magill was getting double teamed

  90. Cindy Luis August 29, 2014 10:33 pm

    71. yep. can’t imagine how anyone could confuse Ljungquist with Cincerova.
Angelica leaving for Sweden Saturday. She and Kari good friends, they went golfing last Saturday
Kahumoku is here through November to have her baby.

  91. cocobean August 29, 2014 11:07 pm

Enjoyed the match. Want to watch the replay to see the experts take on the game. My impression was the veterans Kalei, Tai and Mendoza were solid the others starters showed a bit of nerves. Magill’s blocking came as advertised but I wouldn’t say she hits with a lot of power. Ginger didn’t have a good hitting night but was important in serve receive. Couldn’t get a good handle on Passi, got to watch the replay to get a better read on her. Higgins had her good and bad moments. She seemed to be more offensive minded than Mita. Kahakai served well.
I think Greeley is an X factor type player. She has the physique she has game as Shoji played her in the back row. She has the arm swing. She’s a freshman. If she plays, where do you play her keeping in mind Nikki will be back eventually. My guess in the long run it’s going to be on the right.

  92. rayson August 29, 2014 11:11 pm

The Wahine are a work in progress. Prior to tonight I had doubts about the starting outside hitters and honestly after seeing them play I still have doubts.

OTOH, what really caught my attention tonight was Kahakai. She’s going to be scary good by the time she graduate. It’s not just her skills but also the way she carries herself. Like Brandon said, she plays confidence.

  93. bleachercoach August 29, 2014 11:11 pm

Good start with a win with No big terminator…If and when Nikki Taylor returns then we may add that need height, talent, and experience on the outside. This may a good time IMO to try this lineup that includes Kalei Greeley (OH)and Kendra Koelsch (S), Higgins (S) try starting a set starting with Magill (M), Adolpho (M) .Mendoza or Kahakai. This puts a big lineup with 2 leaders/captains in the game (Higgins and Adolpho). Although we have 3 possible freshmen IMO they are pretty sound. Also Emily Maglio can play Middle too. Don’t get me wrong…I am a strong supporter for our local girls….They play so hard, tenacious, and are good. They deserve a chance to start but with experimenting early with other lineups this could be such a blessing come conference and hopefully into postseason. Without a block and a little more height up front we will struggle against an athletic bigger team like Arizona St. and the likes. Go big first then bring in the scappers…This is the time to find out the BEST CHEMISTRY regardless of returning experience. Anyways my opinions can be like armpits….I would love to see Hawaii do whatever it takes to win even if we struggle with finding the best lineup.
Anyways great job Rainbow Wahines!!! LOVE OUR TEAM!!!

  94. mauna August 30, 2014 1:26 am

    2. That’s Lisa Strand-Maa not Lori Santi.

  95. jerry August 30, 2014 2:58 am

I would rather the Wahine win every match ugly, than lose every game pretty.
A diamond in the rough but will be cut, sized and put out on display after this weekend. IMO. Let’s go bows.

  96. Cindy Luis August 30, 2014 6:22 pm

    94. now that’ is funny. don’t see how anyone would confuse those two either.

  97. Cindy Luis August 30, 2014 6:26 pm

    93. they have options to go big or go small. I’m sure the coaches will figure out what lineup is best to start. may not be the one that finishes.
Shoji said that they will have to play better defense, be quicker on the block and on the attack.
on the other hand, San Diego State looked pretty bad yesterday so hard to tell how good ASU is. other than bigger and more physical that Ohio
