  16. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 4:22 pm

A couple of SEs by UH has helped Cal Poly tie it at 18. TO UH

  17. T103 September 24, 2016 4:24 pm

Not sure annie is getting sets, lets hope we can start spreading the offense around, seems like we relying a lot on Nikki.

  18. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 4:26 pm

Van Winden with a hitting error. UH up 21-19. TO CP

  23. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 4:41 pm

Hawaii can’t put it down with seven set points.
    Cal Poly wins it 34-32

  24. T103 September 24, 2016 4:43 pm

Man, tough 1st set…. They have to figure this out. Credit to Cal-poly playing hard. What was that hitting error on UH that gave Cal=poly that final set point? Side note, is that whole green card challenge thing only when Hawaii plays at home? Or is that elsewhere, obviously it isn’t at this match b/c Dave would have challenged a bunch of ‘calls’.

  25. Ashley September 24, 2016 4:43 pm

wow, did not like how that set went. Hawaii needs to wake up. Annie is struggling and you really can’t put all the focus into Nikki. obviously Cal Poly is no joke. Tiff said it’s humid in the gym, do they not have a AC there

  26. jmy September 24, 2016 4:45 pm

Stanford needed five sets to beat CP…

  27. greenthumb September 24, 2016 4:46 pm

24, challenge still in beta, one of the things needed is having multiple camera feeds (angles).

  28. Astroboy September 24, 2016 4:47 pm

I don’t think Cal Poly has the video equipment to be able to do video challenges…

  29. AlexM September 24, 2016 4:49 pm

Hawaii had so many chances to win that 1st set. Too many unforced errors.

  30. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 4:50 pm

    UH up 8-5 TO Mustangs

  31. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 4:51 pm

they have AC. apparently not working very well.

  32. AlexM September 24, 2016 4:52 pm

I wish Iosia would attack more.

  33. jmy September 24, 2016 4:55 pm

Too many hitting errors allowing Cal Poly back into it…

  34. T103 September 24, 2016 4:57 pm

Our middles have to produce more, we just need to start terminating. ahh we are better then this, lets go girls! 14-13 Hawaii

  35. jmy September 24, 2016 4:58 pm

CP outhitting UH .333 to .200 in set 2…

  36. Ashley September 24, 2016 4:59 pm

Hawaii will lose, at least at the rate their going.

  37. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:00 pm

Castillo hits long. Cal Poly up 16-15. TO UH

  38. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:04 pm

    UH up 19-16. TO Mustangs

  39. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:07 pm

UH led 21-16. Two aces by Mustangs closes it to 21-18. TO UH

  40. AlexM September 24, 2016 5:08 pm

Again with serve receive problems late in sets.

  41. Ki September 24, 2016 5:14 pm

I really wish Iosia would attack the ball

  42. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:14 pm

    UH wins 27-25.

  43. T103 September 24, 2016 5:16 pm

Man, I don’t pretend to know how to anything with vball, but just frustrated. We shouldn’t have to get to this point. I can’t figure it out, what we are or are not doing that we should start or stop doing to get our butts in gear. We are really struggling tonite. Hope we can re-group during the intermission and get this going!!

  44. AlexM September 24, 2016 5:19 pm

Maybe they should try Annie in the middle. If only for blocking purposes. She’s still learning to hit from the outside and she seems lost at times and not very effective. Maybe Sibley should get a chance at left.

  45. Warriorfan September 24, 2016 5:20 pm

Just too many hitting errors, not getting the tips again and think kahakai is a step slow this whole weekend.

  46. Warriorfan September 24, 2016 5:21 pm

Annie is finally getting into rythym in second set why switch her positions all of a sudden.

  47. Ashley September 24, 2016 5:23 pm

we escaped that set. we shouldn’t be struggling this much. anyways, watching the other games for tonight throughout the conference and i must admit, the conference may be better than last season.

  48. greenthumb September 24, 2016 5:24 pm

a little OT but I’m wincing when they lay out to try for saves on the hardwood vs. on taraflex.

  49. Warriorfan September 24, 2016 5:25 pm

Cal poly is the second best team in the league UH is just making too many hitting errors to keep them in it, they aren’t struggling that much calm down.

  50. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:31 pm

UH up 6-3. TO Cal Poly.
something to consider is Hawaii is playing back to back. Cal Poly hasn’t played since last week.

  51. Maverick September 24, 2016 5:37 pm

    44. Seriously? After some adversity you want to abandon what has worked over the course of three matches? Every player has bad days. Tonight so far has been Annie’s. Growth best occurs when players are allowed to work through tough stretches. If Shoji switched up his lineup as much as bloggers here suggest, the team would be not develop any chemistry, players would be on pins and needles worried about being replaced after a a few bad points, and the team would be in no position to challenge for a national championship.

  52. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:39 pm

Two blocks and UH up 13-9. TO Mustangs.
Cal Poly now running a 6-2 with their FR and Sr setting alternating in the back row. Nelson apparently got hurt early in Set 3.

  53. livealoha September 24, 2016 5:40 pm

Kahakai and Granato are definitely struggling with the jump float this road trip.

UCSB and Cal Poly are the other top serving teams in the BWC. Cal Poly also took Stanford to 5. They aren’t a push over.

  54. Maverick September 24, 2016 5:46 pm

Btw, anyone notice that UH is holding the awesome Van Winden to a negative hitting percentage?

  55. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 5:50 pm

Hahaha. Mav, I was just coming on here to post that regarding Adlee.

    Grieson and Clewis are impressive.

I agree with Norene attacking a bit more. Keep them honest.

Annie is having an off night. It will happen. Nikki’s had them. They all do. Someone else just needs to, and are, stepping up

  56. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:50 pm

    UH wins 25-17

  57. T103 September 24, 2016 5:52 pm

Nice, pulled away and closed out this set. Seems like they are finally getting into sync. Could be also what Cindy was saying, UH playing back to back while this is the 1st time Cal=Poly played since last week, well rested legs. Lets keep pushing ladies, you got this!

  58. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 5:53 pm

You guys all need to relax. Geez. Cal Poly is a good team. We are on their home court. I’m happy we are getting challenged on the road. We need it.

Everyone is panicking and wants everyone switched all over the place. No can

  59. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 5:54 pm

Let’s talk about how McKenna is stepping up instead of Annie struggling.

    13-2-30 for Granato. .367.

  60. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 5:55 pm

Mitchem moves to the middle. Granato and Sibley on the left

  61. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 5:55 pm

After that. Annie in the middle. Hahaha

  62. Maverick September 24, 2016 5:56 pm

    61. No kiddding. Now I’m going to watch the match.

  63. T103 September 24, 2016 6:00 pm

The play by play for Cal-Poly guy pronounces “libero” as ‘liberal’. It’s driving me nuts. I wonder how he would pronounce ‘liberal’?

  64. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 6:01 pm

Taylor with 23 kills. UH up 9-7. TO Cal Poly

  65. livealoha September 24, 2016 6:02 pm

And then we are reminded of what Mitchem can do in the middle. What a predicament.

If Granato can continue to be the OH1 Hawaii needs and hit as highly as she has been, maybe we move Mitchem back and give Sibley the OH2.

Great problem to have tho… Sibley came in played well right off the bat.

  66. Big Island VB fan September 24, 2016 6:04 pm

Taylor Nelson, the Cal Poly setter was taken out of the third set due to cramping in her legs. She is back in the fourth set gutting it out.

  67. Blunite September 24, 2016 6:04 pm

Cal Poly runs a fast offense (lower, quicker sets). Because the block can’t close CP hitters will always have a seam. Levels the field for less talented teams.

  68. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 6:05 pm

    63. At least he’s a decent announcer. Much better than the cheech and chong show yesterday at ucsb.

  69. Warrior Dave September 24, 2016 6:05 pm

Looking forward to seeing how quickly Annie can get re-acclimated to the middle and Casey back to left OH.

  70. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 6:06 pm

Two aces by the Mustangs and they lead 13-11. TO UH

  71. Maverick September 24, 2016 6:07 pm

    68. I kinda wished I had seen cheech and chong last night…

  72. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 6:07 pm

    65. Never a question on what Annie can do in the middle. We just needed an outside terminator and Annie brought that last weekend.

Pretty intimidating to see Nikki and Annie lining up for a block.

Would like to see Castillo be given a chance back at her natural position outside. She’s been playing well.

  73. haleiwacrossfitter September 24, 2016 6:08 pm

    71. I don’t know. I found some blood in my ears when I showered after.

  74. oldtimer808 September 24, 2016 6:12 pm

This announcer doesn’t know what an Ace is. He thinks it has to hit the floor and keeps saying receive error on the first contact.

  75. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 6:13 pm

Two blocks and an ace and UH up 20-18. TO CP

  76. jmy September 24, 2016 6:15 pm

Live Stats have it tied at 19…Don’t like this format…

  77. T103 September 24, 2016 6:16 pm

    74. I was thinking the same thing. He said ace only when team serves and no one on the other side touches it. If other side touches it but shanks it, he doesn’t consider it an ace…. Is that right?

  78. oldtimer808 September 24, 2016 6:17 pm

Cracking up Kahakai is now Kalakai

  79. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 6:18 pm

Koelsch with the dumps. UH wins 25-20.

  80. T103 September 24, 2016 6:19 pm

Wow! yay haha nice dump by Kendra! Didn’t expect that one, good win, good challenge by Cal-Poly!

  81. oldtimer808 September 24, 2016 6:19 pm

    Right on Wahines another win

  82. oldtimer808 September 24, 2016 6:20 pm

Yes 80 the announcer is clueless

  83. greenthumb September 24, 2016 6:22 pm

Congrats to the team on the win!

  84. warriorwahine September 24, 2016 6:22 pm

    congratulations to na wahine!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLt1BhfzgbsF1896N7vWZc3EOUQOAAlhMC&v=NgucCOw1FP8

  85. livealoha September 24, 2016 6:25 pm

Stat line – all Cal Poly hitters hit over .300 except their top hitter, who Hawaii kept to only 6 kills, 12 errors, with the most swings (45).

That’s pretty eye-popping to have five other players (including an active setter) over .300 on the night, and a team still loses.

  86. islandman September 24, 2016 6:28 pm

The announcer is calling an ace like in tennis. The stream instant replay was not instant, but showed the play before the last play.

  87. greenthumb September 24, 2016 6:31 pm

84, was there a way to watch it through YouTube? The link straight from Big West was pretty ragged (except for the score inset graphic).

  88. Maverick September 24, 2016 6:33 pm

I still think moving Mitchem to the middle is a mistake. Although her hitting pct. will likely rise, I think her kill production will stay the same or fall, based on the continuing passing problems. And I just don’t see Sibley making up for Mitchem’s production on the left–she is a sub-.200 hitter. Castillo is the wild card, but now she has to get acclimated to the left again, if that is Shoji’s plan. In any case, the musical chairs of volleyball positions isn’t over. We’ll see who plays where against the two worst conference teams (past two years) next weekend: Fullerton and Riverside.

  89. Maverick September 24, 2016 6:34 pm

    87. Yes, on the bigwest.tv site, when you click to play the match, a youtube icon appears in the lower left of the video screen. Click that and it takes you to the stream on youtube.

  90. Bozo September 24, 2016 6:34 pm

    ionia/kendra….. what a combo…

  91. Ron September 24, 2016 6:40 pm

That announcer had a nice voice but he didn’t know how to say “libero” and he didn’t seem to understand the scoring system. Also annoying was the way they only showed replays when C.P. got the point. Sibley looked good when she was in there. I don’t think the discussion as to where to play Annie is over. Still, a gutsy win. The first time I played at CalPoly it had men only. Women were admitted a year later.

  92. Rabbit ears September 24, 2016 6:46 pm

Love the wahines self confidence this season. Lose first set no problem. Tight 4th set, we got this.

  93. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 7:00 pm

  94. noblesol September 24, 2016 7:03 pm

Tip of the hat to Cal Poly. They played some gritty volleyball and gave their crowd of 2631 fans a great effort. Hope their fans continue to reward them, they are definitely heading in the right direction.

  95. blunite September 24, 2016 7:39 pm

@85 — Very good point, it illustrates good passing and a fast offense. Take away their best hitter and Cal Poly was still neck and neck with Hawaii. Whereas, Hawaii loses without it’s best hitter (NT).

Hawaii’s continued poor passing forces them to go high ball to the outside. To compensate coach switches players, but it fails to address the root problem: poor passing.

  96. Ashley September 24, 2016 7:50 pm

gotta be honest, Cal Poly looks better than LBSU this year, was watching the Irvine-LBSU match while listening to the Hawaii game on the radio, they look good, but not as good as years past. but yes, hats off to Poly, they are a very feisty bunch. can’t wait for them to come here.

  97. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 8:07 pm

    http://www.gopoly.com/sports/wvball/2016-17/boxscores/20160924_wrw5.xml

here’s a link to the box.

  98. Cindy Luis September 24, 2016 8:09 pm

    95. disagree somewhat. Mitchem not used to the high ball on the left so she was struggling, moving her to the middle allowed her to be more effective.
They are aware that they have passing problems.
Bottom line is they won and will come home to work on it.

  99. Warriorfan September 24, 2016 8:52 pm

Mitchem should be hitting from all over , middle , left, right doing the step out like Willoughby used to. UH needs to utilize her from all over like UW does with Jones.

  100. warriorwahine September 24, 2016 9:23 pm

    98. bottom line is they need to work on passing (and consider a fast offense.) if they cant pass properly then just dig the ball as high straight up vertical as possible and let the setter do a passing assist and not having to chase down the ball.

87 and 89. that youtube link was the live streaming from big west tv, no idea if it can be rewinded but might as well preserve the link anyways. (i wish i could find the same for yesterdays ucsb match 🙁 )

  101. greenthumb September 24, 2016 9:29 pm

89, thanks, I’ll remember to look for the icon on the BW feed the next time the team plays on the road.

  102. Maverick September 24, 2016 9:37 pm

You can still watch the Poly match here:

    http://www.bigwest.org/story.asp?story_id=16070

    Sans audio

  103. greenthumb September 24, 2016 10:04 pm

Here’s another link. Audio kicks in after the first few minutes.

  104. Maverick September 24, 2016 11:13 pm

    103. Kewl that you found the YouTube link. I can’t find it via google search, have to use your direct link. It would be amazing if you could find the UCSB match. I need some comic relief.

  105. lina September 25, 2016 12:53 am

Would moving Castillo back to the OH and having Mitchem solely play middle be a possibility? After all, isn’t Castillo’s original position (prior to the injuries) at OH, and likewise for Mitchem?

  106. noblesol September 25, 2016 4:18 am

Misc. notes on the 1st set:
    – The first set lasted ~ 40 minutes.
    – Hawaii had ~ 7 match point opportunities
    – CP had ~ 4 match point opportunities, winning with a service ace (receive error, Hawaii)
    – Taylor Nelson (CP setter) made outstanding decisions and terrific sets.
    – CP points 1 -15 (from my loose notes, not from the official stats): CP employed a fast, quick set system, earning 5 points out of the first 15 in fast system using quick sets, but losing 3 points to attack errors. 3 points of their first 15 were earned with high ball sets to the pins. 1 point was earned by Nelson converting a CP overpass into a kill. 5 points were earned on Hawaii attack errors. 1 point was earned on a Hawaii service error. In summary, Hawaii scored more points for CP (6 errors) than CP earned in fast system with quick sets (5), and the rest (4) came in rally/transition (high ball and setter dump).
    – CP points 16 – 34 (from my loose notes, not from the official stats): only 3 points were earned in fast system using quick sets. 2 points were lost due to attack errors. 6 points were earned using high ball sets to the left OH (5) and pipe (1). 1 point was earned by Nelson winning a joust with Maglio over a CP overpass. 2 points were earned on Hawaii ball handling errors (1) Iosia double hit and (1) Kahakai error (bad call by ref). 3 points were earned on Hawaii attack errors. 3 points were earned off of Hawaii service errors. 1 point was earned by ace (Hawaii receive error). In summary, Hawaii scored more points for CP (9 errors) than CP earned in fast system with quick sets (3), and the rest (7) came in rally/transition (six high ball and one setter joust). Of the six high ball kills, three were consecutive tip kills (kill #18, #20, and #21).
    – Hawaii errors (15) accounted for over 44% of CP points in the first set.

Apparently it was a warm, humid gym, which likely worked against CP later in the match. CP was more in system early, running their middles out to the pins or out to the 3m line and hard back in, and always running both outsides hard at the net trying to give the setter three quick set options to LOH, ROH, and middle. However this style was clearly wearing them down and after point 15, was no longer the determining factor, but the errors from Hawaii were more than compensating. However after a plus thirty point 1st set and close overtime 2nd set, the CP setter cramped up and CP started to lose their legs. The danger of a fast quick system for CP is they are likely only going to be successful as long as they have fresher legs and better decision making and execution than the opposition, and as soon as they lose a step and vertical, advantage goes to the taller team as long as that team isn’t shooting themselves in the foot making errors. After the marathon 1st set, the physical advantage was swinging in Hawaii’s direction. Tonight a greater use of the neutral play, especially early on, might have helped. Employing the neutral and cutting back on the errors, letting the opposition wear itself down earlier, should work to Hawaii’s advantage against most of the Big West.

    85. Totally agree.

Everyone thought Mitchum was a force on the left v Pepperdine.

The middles if Maglio and Castillo were having a good night and can hold their own with Castillo’s continued improvement in that position.

With more swings and practice on the left Annie could be a terminator there similar to Nikki on the right. Granato has played on the left a lot and took a lot of swings there pre-conference to get more comfortable there. Annie is already good there but with more practice there would be great giving good balance to the team.

    Still like

    OH1 Mitchum
    OH2 Granato
    M1 Maglio
    M2 Castillo
    OPP Nikki

With Sibley and Greeley off the bench and Burns backing up in middle. Lots of depth!

Would love to see Higgins serving more and Smith on serve receive. Kendra coming in for situational blocking.

Thanks noblesol, very interesting information. I watched the stream but Cindy’s article in todays Star-Advertiser and your treatise added a great deal to “what I was seeing”.

Definitely want to be in north Carolina’s bracket in the ncaa tourney they almost lost again ( to boston college) but their rpi and seed will be really high by the ncaa anyway.

Went to the match and Mott was humid. Mustangs Coach said that he was going to perfect this fast attack for three years based on recruiting the #1 HS setter at time in Nelson – and it was awesome last night. Fortunately, Mustangs eventually tired and could not sustain it against a solid wahine defense. Meanwhile the wahines are still evolving and experimenting. As other noted, Mitchem struggled earlier but came around. IMO, by the time Annie acquires the necessary reps to become an effective OH, the season and her college career will be over. I am all for using her at MH where she is just amazing and using her at OH only where the match-up is key. This was a win against a team that had clearly prepared very well for this match. Yet, we won – says a lot about how good the wahines are.

Tongo, you make a lot of sense. Thanks for the on-site report.

  112. mei mei September 25, 2016 9:39 am

overall thought the Na Wahine did an awesome job on the road over two good teams especially cal poly! they are certainly the #2 IMHO team in the conference… hopefully they will come out in the post season.

I do luv Mitchem in the middle and yes think she should be hitting from everywhere as well!

passing yes was a struggle, but i’m sure they’ll work that out – think Cindy mentioned that they will alternate the DS’s when they go on the road so hopefully Smith will get the opportunity…
    as always go BOWS!
    B+ for these (2) matches

  113. Warriorfan September 25, 2016 9:50 am

Watching Utah play jeez with Greeley’s injury we are really an Adora Anae away from being legit national title contenders this year. No offense to Sibley who is just too green still.

  114. nomu September 25, 2016 10:38 am

Imho, better passing and less hitting errors – this match would not have been close. Credit to Cal Poly for serving tough.

  115. tongo September 25, 2016 11:39 am

I think the Mustangs will get more than their fair share of wins against ranked team. Nelson’s ability to set this fast offense and a team that has been groomed over these past 4 years in this system, makes this 2016 edition particularly competitive with virtually anyone – taking Stanford to 5 set is a good example. Often talked about but rarely seen, their Coach Sam Crosson actually did what he set out to do. It is a pretty awesome accomplishment from one of nation’s top engineering schools.

Well….Cal Poly did have other advantages that UH did not. Like some posters mentioned, Cal Poly was fresher. UH was their only opponent for the week so they could focus on us. UH had to play back to back. Since UH had to play UCSB first, the team needed to focus on that match and then turn they attention to Cal Poly.

UH have played against fast offenses before so its not like UH never saw that offense. UH just didn’t have enough time to prep for this team. Yet UH was close to sweeping them.

I predict when CP comes to Honolulu, UH will have be more focused and don’t think we will have that hard a time with them. CP good but I think it was a case that UH played junk(and probably tired) and CP was fresh and fired up.

Roles will be reversed when CP will have to play UH after getting off the plane.

  117. tongo September 25, 2016 3:52 pm

While watching the Washington vs USC match on Pac 12 TV, long time commentator Marie Anderson mentioned that the Huskies were really good in picking up tips because the team does tip drills on each and every practice. Perhaps Dave and staff should adopt a version of this considering it is one of our on-going Achilles’ heels, year-in and year-out.

  118. blunite September 25, 2016 5:51 pm

    Hawaii’s Perceived Errors:

It was noted that Hawaii’s errors outnumbered Cal Poly’s kills using a fast offense. Oddly, same thing occurred against other teams like UCLA and Washington (Hawaii had more kills than Washington). Hawaii’s attack errors against ranked teams is 22-25. Their errors against Cal Poly was 25.

The USA National team does use a fast offense/fast sets (winning the 2014 World’s Women Volleyball Championship) ongoing now for 4+ years. Perhaps someone should tell Karch Kiraly the problems with using a fast offense. After all, height does not appear to be his primary recruitment criteria. (Good thing they don’t play in a humid gym.)

Bottom Line: Comparing Hawaii’s errors to Cal Poly’s kills is a non sequitur.

Let’s give credit to the opposing blocks/defenses; which may explain why Hawaii’s errors are so consistent against strong teams.

  119. H-Man September 25, 2016 7:01 pm

Congratulations to the Wahine for the two road wins. Wins on the road not always the easiest, but you got it done.

  120. noblesol September 25, 2016 8:41 pm

#117 I’m guessing you might be referring to something I wrote. Not sure how to respond though. I can’t find where it was said by me or others that of Hawaii’s errors and Cal Poly’s kills “one followed the other”. So, yes, of course I agree with you, if it were true that was said, then it’s a non sequitur. But that is not what was said.

If you were referring to my breakdown of the 1st set of the Cal Poly match, I thank you for reading it and thinking about it. However I’d guide you to a different ‘bottom line’ conclusion if possible; that is that we agree that a fast offense and quick sets are wholly appropriate for Cal Poly’s personnel and their program. But is that it, and nothing else to learn?

I was interested in how much of Cal Polys 1st set success was wholly attributable to their ability to get kills in system, and how much of their success came from Hawaii’s errors. A fast quick system is not primarily responsible for the other teams errors. The ability to block and serve well can assist the opposition in generating their errors, but those are not attributes of a fast quick setting system. The opposition has primary control of their errors against the block and in choosing personnel and positioning for serve receive.

My breakdown showed that Cal Pol in system was relatively successful in their points 1 – 15, clearly generating for them 5 points. But their ability to generate points in system was relatively inconsequential in their points 16 – 34. In their points 16 – 34, fast quick generated only 3 of those 19 points. Hawaii’s nine errors accounted for 9 of their 19 points, which was 3x what Cal Poly was generating in system from their fast quick offense. To the extent that Cal Poly was doing a good job of serving, blocking, and playing high ball transition offense with lots of tipping, that helped Hawaii along in their error fest and self-demolition. But that is something that any team can do regardless of their primary offensive system, and it is wholly wrong to point to fast quick as responsible for Cal Polys success in their come back against Hawaii in set 1, as clearly it was something else going on in those points 16 – 34.

My bottom line for what I think might have helped Hawaii in Set 1 with reducing their attack errors, would have to been to employ the ‘neutral’ attack a bit more often. Keep the ball in, avoid the block, make them chase and make them generate high ball transition offense to their struggling ‘out of system’ OH, Van Winden. Hawaii has had success stopping her. Although Hawaii has struggled with her tips from time to time, they’ve shown they can adjust and control it. For most of the match they were ok against the tip, but in that set 1 they had one rotation from points #18, #20, and #21 that they failed to quickly adjust. As for improving serve receive and passing, they could utilize their DS’s a bit more. Many of Hawaii’s attack errors are generated from poor passing, resulting in not so great setting, followed by what the ‘eh hitting. Fewer attack errors follows from better sets follows from better passing. No non sequitur there.

Sorry Tongo, meant #118 in my treatise above. I always find I’m agree with you by the way, so just want to get that out there.

i just looked at the box score and cant believe savannah was aced 3 times including the ending set point for set 1 (and apparently she attacked??)

  123. tongo September 26, 2016 6:34 am

#121 No problem. This is after-all just fun for us fans. Enjoyed reading your thoughts also. Nice to see some critical thinking posted here every once in a while.

  124. tongo September 26, 2016 7:07 am

#122 Yeah, Mustangs were serving really tough. Had mentioned it earlier but IMO, there was more than one occasion where it was not clear if ball was going out or not – and that Kahakai was not sure. At the Thunderdome, Savanah took one at the very last moment and shank it. At Mott, she let one go and it dropped in. To me, she needs help from the other backcourt players at the time. Staff will address it soon enough but it was a little disappointing to see. Overall, the team played great. And talking about receiving, I thought Greeley looked more active and played great.

  125. connor September 26, 2016 7:58 am

Tongo: how was Granato’s passing for the two nights? did it look steadier or was she having her usual inconsistency? did Shoji substitute DS in for any of the backrow regulars?

  126. Maverick September 26, 2016 8:55 am

Hawaii moves up to #13 in the poll.
