  7. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 7:30 pm

Franciskovic on the one-handed set to van Tilburg ends it 25-19.

  8. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 7:30 pm

  9. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 7:40 pm

UCSB takes a narrow lead over UH in the second set 7-5

  10. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 7:47 pm

Gauchos up 15-12 at the TTO.

  11. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 7:47 pm

UCSB gets to 15 first holding their lead over UH at 12

  12. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 7:50 pm

Hawaii comes back to tie it at 15

  13. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 7:51 pm

Van Tilburg with his 10th kill, ties it at 15. TO UCSB

  14. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 7:56 pm

After taking a 17-16 lead, Warriors give up three straight. UCSB leads 19-17. TO UH

  15. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 7:58 pm

UH has come back to tie at 19. TO UCSB. McLaughlin was off the bench pretty quickly on that one.

  16. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 8:01 pm

Franciskovic with his second service ace, immediately followed by a service error

  17. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:02 pm

Critical challenge. UH says UCSB was in the net. if they win it, they lead 21-20. otherwise UCSB is up 21-20

  18. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:02 pm

Call reversed. UCSB call for NV. UH up 21-20.

  19. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:04 pm

UCSB has tied it at 22. TO UH

  20. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:07 pm

Matautia hits long. UCSB wins 25-23

  21. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 8:08 pm

UCSB takes the second set 25-23, looks like a long night

  22. Kahuna February 4, 2017 8:13 pm

Charlie is going to have to bench Austin again. He need to terminate during critical times to take the pressure off Stijn. If he cannot, the coaches need to find someone else. Matautia couldn’t terminate and gave UCSB a chance at point 24 and then hit out for point 25.
Got to do better than that since Kupono is not exactly being count on to terminate that much. UCSB is cheating their block on Stijn. Got to make them pay.

  23. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:19 pm

Rosenmeier in for Matautia. Solbring in for Gasman.

  24. Ki February 4, 2017 8:20 pm

I think the middles needed to get more involved. 5 kills in 10 attempts after 2 sets is not enough. Opponents will camp on the outsides knowing the sets are going outside 90% of the time.

  25. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:23 pm

    22. wouldn’t put that last play all on Matautia. not the greatest of sets. but Rosenmeier gives them a good presence out there.

  26. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 8:30 pm

A service ace by Stijn van Tilburg ties the game at 13, both teams have been trading points back and forth the whole set so far

  27. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:31 pm

Solbrig with the solo stuff. UH up 15-14 at the TTO

  28. jmy February 4, 2017 8:34 pm

I really like Matautia…very athletic, only a freshman…he has a lot of great matches ahead of him…

  29. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:39 pm

two hitting errors by Chavers and UH up 21-20. TO UCSB

  30. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:40 pm

    28. he does. but got to work on his passing. teams continue to target him on server.

  31. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 8:46 pm

UH wins 25-23. the previous call had been UH out of rotation. Franciskovic served when he shouldn’t have. but he ended up being the right server on set point.

  32. Don February 4, 2017 8:50 pm

Rick sure had a real problem with Jennings serve…I thought it was a screening problem by UH…Rick left a TO on the table…he chose poorly…

  33. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 9:01 pm

2 Gaucho hitting errors have given UH the 12-10 lead. TO UCSB

  34. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 9:02 pm

Hawaii takes the lead in the 4th set 12-10 and the Gauchos call a time out

  35. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 9:07 pm

    32. they were definitely out of rotation.
UH up 15-14 at the TTO.

  36. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 9:11 pm

finally a lift on UCSB. UH up 19-15. TO Gauchos.

  37. Katie Almeida February 4, 2017 9:19 pm

Hawaii wins the game with a 4th set score of 25-19. What a fun one!

  38. Don February 4, 2017 9:20 pm

Rick took too long to challenge..he chose poorly for the 2nd time tonight…

  39. T103 February 4, 2017 9:55 pm

Man the lifts from UCSB that were not called by the refs was frustrating. And couple of balls that were thrown by UCSB not called as well. I think I only saw one ball that UH could have gotten called out for as a throw, but UCSB had like 3. Mol was struggling w serves too. Anyway, glad Joe got a couple of serves in, after missing 2, hard position to be in, called into the game for serves being cold and no warmup. We won, thats all that counts. Hope we can fine-tune our playing as we move along in the season!

  40. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 10:13 pm

    38. he didn’t take too long to challenge. his assistant was about to hand him the paddle and McLaughlin said never mind and waived it off.

  41. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 10:15 pm

    39. agree there were some major throws by UCSB as well as some sticky setting But since they let it go Friday they weren’t going to call it tonight. And agree with you that UH had one that could have been called but Mol’s wasn’t as blatant as UCSB’s

  42. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 10:22 pm

As for Hawaii being out of rotation, it should have been caught points earlier when Worsley came in to serve for Solbrig. It should have been Rosenmeier serving with the Warriors up 22-21. Worsley served into the net. it’s 22-22. UCSB serves long, UH up 23-22. Franciskovic goes to serve because he normally would follow the MB (Gasman/Solbrig/Worlsey as sub)
What started to call attention to the situation was when Franciskovic looked at UCSB lineup and thought they were out of rotation after the kill by Chavers which tied it at 23. since UCSB had the point anyway, they played on from there. Fey’s kill gave UH the lead at 24-23 and Franciskovic then served. with Cherry hitting wide to end the set.

  43. Cindy Luis February 4, 2017 10:26 pm

    42. hope my explanation didn’t confuse things even more. I keep my own scoring in a notebook so I was pretty sure it should have been Rosenmeier serving and not Worsley who was in for Solbrig. Wade confirmed it later.

  44. warriorfan February 4, 2017 10:49 pm

the MPSF just doesn’t call throws or lifts, Long Beach State gets away with a bounch of them too, their setter practically lifts every time.

I feel like UH needs to move Stijn to the left permanantly already. UH’s current lineup is great but to be national title contenders they need Stijn and Rado in the same lineup.

Stijn needs to get comfortable with passing period and Rado needs to be on the floor, he’s wasting away on the bench IMO.

  45. warriorfan February 4, 2017 10:54 pm

By the way really happy with the way Kupono played this weekend hope he keeps this up the rest of the season, and Brett came in and was very steady passing wise.

  46. T103 February 5, 2017 5:29 am

#45 I agree, I’m glad Fey was able to contribute in some way shape or form. Also happy that Rosey gets called upon to steady out the passing. Austin is only a freshman and I keep forgetting that! Glad Rosey gets to come in and contribute, he’s been doing well at hitting as well!

  47. Ron February 5, 2017 7:52 am

Tiff, I hardly missed the TV, thanks!

  48. Kauaiboy February 5, 2017 8:38 am

Hawaii’s passing is very suspect… Seems like most teams are targeting Austin in serve receive, he needs a lot of work in that area. If Hawaii doesn’t clean up its serve receive they won’t be able to seriously threaten the top 4 teams. Van Tilburg has been Hawaii’s MVP thus far, I don’t understand why Wade doesn’t move him over to the left and insert Rado to the right. Van Tilburg can’t do any worse at passing then Austin or Fey… IMO this lineup is our best chance at beating the top 4 teams.

  49. livealoha February 5, 2017 5:32 pm

    No. 48.

Think you kind of answered you question. My assumption is Van Tilburg has NOT proven he can pass as well as Matautia in practice, which is why Wade is hesitant in putting Van Tilburg and Parapunov in the lineup together.

Hawaii needs to pass well, and I think a combination of Fey, Matautia and Rossenmeier and Tuileta at libero provide Hawaii’s best chances at passing.

I will say though, the upcoming road trip against UCSD, Cal Baptist, Mckendree and Lindenwood may be a good time for Wade to put out a lineup with Van Tilburg and Parapunov to build chemistry.

This in regards to the previous thread about Charlie being next wahine coach.

I agree that he has done a great job with the men and has been able to bring in the international talent and top national team players on the team. What people have to remember is that the men’s game is about 30 decades of evolution behind the women’s game.

The women have more options around the country and top talent is plenty and being spread out across the Power 5 conferences. This has not effected the men’s game yet and young men have less options, and Hawaii benefits from that. Especially these past couple recruiting classes where Charlie was able to get a bunch of kids playing together on the national level coming in together.

I think the men are where the women’s game was in the late 80s/early 90s as Hawaii was considered to be in the top conference and the top talent came from and stayed mostly on the west. In time, the men will get there, too. But in the meantime, I’m super happy Charlie is able and willing to go internationally for talent. That’s one area I wish Dave would get more into. I’m not convinced Charlie would transition back to the women’s side. I think he has found his niche in the men’s game.

  51. rabbit ears February 5, 2017 7:17 pm

HCF# I may have misunderstood. But I thought Charlie had already express interest in the wahine job. I just like his fire and the way he plays based on matchups and who’s got the hot hand.

  52. Kauaiboy February 5, 2017 7:23 pm

#49 my point is the current combination of passer ain’t cutting it, Van Tilburg can’t be any worse and you’d add a better terminator on the left along with a potent blocker/attacker on the right in Rado…

  53. Ki February 5, 2017 8:39 pm

If they got their middles more involved in the offense, it would open up (create seams in the block) the outside hitters. Right now, they are 2 sometimes 3 dimensional. Easy for the blockers to read

  54. haleiwacrossfitter February 6, 2017 5:40 am

RE..not sure if Charlie showed interest. He may have, and I wouldn’t be terribly upset if he got it, but I don’t think he will get it. He is a good fit for the men, he is a great men’s coach. Just my opinion, really.

And with east coast teams like Ohio St, Loyola and Penn St really becoming national factors, it is just a matter of time before it gets bigger and harder to get these guys here.

And I don’t want this next comment to be considered sexist or anything, so please don’t go there with this…but, I think young men are willing to travel away from home and get a different experience and Hawaii is still paradise to these young guys. Young women are a little more emotionally tied to their decision process and likely to stay near family and Hawaii is just too far. Guys tend to make more “fun” decisions. Just my opinions and it is said knowing MANY young women travel away from home to play.

I think Wade is a charmer for sure, though. And I know a couple super star wahine recruits committed to Hawaii because of Wade. He has a more charismatic personality and can be more persuasive. So, like I said, I don’t think he will get the job, but I would not be bummed if he got it either.

I would love to see Fisher or Sullivan from Texas come over.

  55. warriorfan February 6, 2017 6:15 am

    54. Fisher yes Sullivan no.
You realize Sullivan is the guy in charge of the texas passing and backrow?? LOL they are always lacking in that area year in and year out and we need a coach that’s been a head coach before.

  56. Cindy Luis February 6, 2017 10:19 am

    49. Van Tilburg doesn’t pass because he’s not in the passing rotation. in most men’s programs, the Opp doesn’t pass. their sole job is to terminate.
if you saw what happened when he moved to left at LBS it wasn’t effective.

    51. What Wade has said about the Wahine job … he’d be interested if there was mutual interest from the department.
not sure how much of a ‘charmer’ he was but he was very passionate with recruits and closed many a deal for Shoji.

    55. agree. don’t see Sullivan in the mix. IMHO the top candidates are Sealy, Wong and Fisher. but, as i’ve said before, you never know what agenda the committee might have.
