    from previous thread
on Ponce and people ‘cringing’ when she went in.
    such short term memory
Ponce came in on Friday, ended Set 2 with an ace. And an assist during her other stints at the service line.
True, she came in Saturday, ended Set 3 with a service error. More noticeable since Hawaii had rallied to 24-23 and looked to have the momentum.
But still … can’t cherry pick about her serving.
Shoji ‘rewards’ practice effort when it comes to his DS. Ponce earned her chance to serve.
If someone left the arena after Ponce served into the net, it wasn’t because of that. There was still plenty of volleyball to be played. throw it out there that the person who left had planned on it going 3 and needed to get somewhere else.

on Mitchem being less effective the second night 11-4-31 as opposed to 10-2-25
Bottom line: Pepperdine had more time to adjust to her.

on Burns: they put her in for Castillo when Castillo looked a little lost, a little slow on the block. plus at one point they were up against 6-7/6-5 block. Burns at 6-5 has a better chance at blocking and going over that block.
if you remember, Pepperdine pulled Harris after Set 2 and was 1-2-7. Some of that was the size UH put up against her, which was Burns and either Taylor or Mitchem

on the Big West: one comment was if UH doesn’t win the league they don’t belong in the NCAA tournament . Have you joined the selection committee and their thinking? Why not think that if UH didn’t win, the league is that much better. Big West a three-bid league a few years ago when there was a 3-way tie for the title.

Recapping the morning show, Feel free to add if I missed anything
Said they were playing some of their best volleyball right now. Some of that is having Mitchem back. Said she looked good on the left despite not ever playing there before.
Said it will depend on Sibley being back whether they move Mitchem back to the middle. Said they liked what Castillo had been doing there. Said Greeley continues to get healthier.
(from me: agree with some previous comments that Greeley needs to fully recover before putting her back in the front row full time. But when she is back, it will create the issue we thought in the beginning. Who plays?)

Said that SLO and UCSB were better, that the Gauchos were more of a surprise. talked little about Cal Poly being in the middle of no where and could be a tough place to recruit two.

Said he hadn’t been to the new UCSB Hall of Fame, where he is enshrined. joked that he might take his team over there to show them what he used to look like.
Funny, during the alumnae promos on the jumbotron this weekend, they had his picture from the 70s. Jeff Hall thought Shoji looked like Bruce Lee, saying Enter the Dragon.
Shoji was over talking to us, looked up at the picture and laughed. I actually think he looked more like Kui Lee.

Annie Mitchem is looking good out there. Was not that impressed with her last season. Now it’s pick your poison with her, Taylor, Granato and Maglio. Can’t wait to see Greeley back at full strength also. She is the glue for the wahines.

I think that Mitchem should be left at OH. it seems to take so much pressure off of Nikki and most importantly Granato. She is too erratic to be primary leftside hitter so this lineup makes her perfom better. i still think however that Dave should take Granato out of the backrow and let Smith take her position. Her passing this weekend was not good.

If the coaching staff likes Castillo in the middle I would like her to stay there. Right now I’m thinking the biggest question mark is MB2. If Castillo is adequate enough by the end of the season, this is how I would see the lineup:

    S: Iosia
    OPP: Taylor
    L1: Mitchem
L2: Granato (Greeley sub for blocking and if Granato not hitting well)
    M1: Maglio
    M2: Castillo
    Li: Kahakai
DS: whomever is playing well, even Higgins

Santa Barbara match looks particularly tough. Got both Ruddins and Hoffman back from injuries last year at the pins. Both are blasting away but Ruddins is really terminating right now at high level. Ruddins is second to Nikki in kills in the BG. Gauchos are also leading the BW in aces. This is a dangerous team. And Gauchos are having a Meet and Greet the Team session right after the match so there will likely be a big crowd.

    5. Like Smith as well but her passing was great either Saturday in her limited appearance.
