thanks. Magill honored, No. 8 Hawaii at 28 in RPI

I will be unable to update the poll, RPI and assuming Big West POWs until after noon because of an appointment.

Would appreciate at if someone could post the updates and allow discussion.

Thanks for the help.

UH’s estimated RPI rank is 28 this morning, with the worst strength of schedule of the top 60 RPI ranked teams. I expect UH to remain at 8 in the polls with ASU falling due to two losses last week but Ohio State jumping UH to 7 based in its win over Illinois.

  2. tongo October 12, 2015 8:00 am

Interesting that Florida is at #4 and UCLA at #6 on RPI.

  3. Maverick October 12, 2015 8:09 am

Hawaii officially ranked 28th in NCAA RPI.

What a win last night! I wonder if the Beach will get even when the Wahine visit? The Wahine looked a bit vulnerable when they did not come out ready to play. Somewhat of a trend this season. I would worry more about cleaning this up than about the RPI. It is what it is. Hope coach has them focused on mental toughness as they demonstrated in sets 4 & 5.

Back to last night’s game…A much needed win! Like a couple bloggers mentioned , Hawaii ‘s 20 blocks especially 9 by Koelsch and 11 by Magill seemed very key..Hudson (1st Team BW setter 2014 )from Long Beach St. has very nice hands and deceptive in her setting. Long Beach always have scrappy defense. Koelsch blocking and grit on the court overcompensates for her location of sets during the game. Regardless, it is evident she possesses that passion out there. There is only one thing that continues to bother me. Why are we making diggable balls look hard. It appears that our backrow players other than Greenly don’t get under the ball. Their reaction and feet movement seems too slow to many balls. The communication back there seems poor because there are many times when 2 girls are going to run into each other. This is what I observe and I may be wrong! Right now, our “BLOCK” is the main reason for our success. Just imagine when we get our serve receive/pass to that same level…

  7. Jojo October 12, 2015 8:59 am

My guess… they have a lot of injuries… So the girls must be a little nervous for some kind of collision that will result in another injury…

  8. tongo October 12, 2015 8:59 am

#4 I watched at least four of the Beach matches this year online and believe that 49ers played their longest stretch of solid volleyball this year against us.

IMO, Beach had great game plan that neutralized Nikki and forced the outcome of the match into the hands of our OHs, who hit under .200% for the match but fortunately were tough minded enough this year to hang in there and play out the hand that was dealt down. At times, wahines looked shocked by the up and down of their own play as they had been recently very steady. Give credit to Brian G.

Still 8, osu leapfrogged us to seven.

Blocking coming around is what got them back into set 1 and enabled domination set 2. Set 3 they played flat footed and too deep again in the back row and couldn’t handle float serves to the middle of the floor; put them in a hole they couldn’t dig or block out of, because they couldn’t get it off the floor to return over the net. The middle backs seem more concerned about being deep so they can be an option for the pipe set, then about stepping up to be in position to dig the shorter serves and middle of the floor attacks. Since they all do it, I assume they are being coached that way. Long Beach, in contrast, stepped up, dug the middle, and challenged Hawaii to hit deep. I kept waiting for someone to yell to Nikki “High, Line” because with two blockers on her and their back row playing up, it was frequently her best option to knuckle it deep in the corner.

  12. rapid October 12, 2015 10:02 am

1 and 3. looks like you were on the money.

    6. yes communication and serve receiving was particularly a problem. kendra did her job even if her set was less than what we want it to be. perhaps the digging should of been left plenty to savannah, it was evident in the csun game and maybe even this game that communication between someone and other than the libero became a problem. savannah vs csun yesterday had to stop dead in her tracks to avoid colliding with a big outside hitter/setter (in essence stealing away her digs/job). seems that only nikki doesnt seem to be inter-tangling with savannah to dig the ball.

scrappy defense by the beach was also a frustrating factor, though not as well as the ‘2 libero’ ucla, though the beachs ds also inflicted an attack. and what about that dig kill by the beach? wahine didnt even bother to get that ball back up!

  13. rapid October 12, 2015 10:16 am

i wonder who was attacking who on yesterdays thread? possibly vehemently disagreeing with poster 45.

and thats why i mock those posters/bloggers/’fans’

to all volleytalkers especially the bashers of TMO. yes! we want emily hartong back! 😀

its called too bad, so sad. you get tai. and she is actually worth her weight in salt. dave and the team thinks so, euro coachs think so and wanted to steal her from dave causing dave to tell them they have to wait 1 more year. your ‘volleyball fan/iq’ is not a qualifier.

  14. blunite October 12, 2015 10:22 am

Last year, Gimmillaro proved that his defense was better than UH’s offense (Higgins setting); but, LBSU wins or loses on the left. Last night Barber hit .122 and Beddingfield .000, in large part due to UH’s block on the right (Koelsch, Taylor). If Shoji tries to win the rematch with offense, he is in for a rude surprise.

  15. Gsky October 12, 2015 10:28 am

Someone mentioned it on the last post and I agree, it looked like Nikki was playing with some knee pain. Maybe that’s why some of her hits appeared to have less velocity. They need to get her healed up. Can you imagine what the team would be like without her? Ugh, that would be a sad scenario.

  16. mauna October 12, 2015 10:37 am

Kendra should be nominated for POW. Even with a few fans with negative comments on her set locations, I think she did a bang up job against two of the top teams in the BW. Her setting locations can be improved upon with more match reps and you can’t beat height at the net.

  17. tongo October 12, 2015 10:47 am

#14 If we want to win on the road against Long Beach, we need better receiving and setting. Beach serving became conservative in set 4 and 5, and we got back into system. Our serving was effective taking out their middle slide attacks in set 4 and 5 and forcing out-of-system sets to their LOH, where our block was waiting. Setting settled down a bit after being all over the place most of the night. If it wasn’t for our blocking and serving, we would have been toasted.

  18. tongo October 12, 2015 11:00 am

#16 Tai was nominated as POW. The fact is that the sets, even by Kendra’s own admission in the post game interview and the TV commentators, were off most of the night. It is a statement of fact. If Higgins had set like that, I can only imagine what would have been said about Tayler. For me, I am talking about the sets and nothing personal about Kendra, whom I actually like.

  19. noblsol October 12, 2015 11:21 am

#18 tongo – agree. Kind of seems obvious, that both Kendra, Tayler, and the team benefit when they are both healthy and can both play. Both need to come out from time to time, both have their strengths and their relative weaknesses. Kendra helps the team most when she is playing through the front row, and Tayler helps the team most when she is serving and playing through the back row rotation. When Kendra has to chase the pass, she has the same issues as Tayler, few setting options, and sometimes drifting sets that leave the hitters few options and fighting to adjust their own footing and or struggling up against the net.

  20. mauna October 12, 2015 11:45 am

I appreciate Tai’s play this weekend, but her stats aren’t outstanding to be nominated over Kendra. I’m sure the committee didn’t watch the Beach match and determines the award mostly by stats. Kendra’s stats looks good to me, and the story line of her blocking and stepping up for an injured starting setter would bode well for the committee’s selection. To each his own opinion I’d guess.

  21. kimo browner October 12, 2015 11:52 am

The pronunciations about Koelsch sets are bogus and over cooked. But, you got to love band wagon opinion . Look at Kendra’s kills. No one is crying about Nikki being over used. Her sets were evenly distributed. Something we rarely saw w Higgins. Further the wahine have lost 5 sets in the first. None in second. The slow start can be attributed to general lethargic play by our OH hitters at the outset. Kendra outplayed Hudson, the MWC’s reigning queen setter. Her stats underscore her performance. She was every where on the floor. Both TMO and Kendra carried the team until they got their Mojo back in the second set. Overall, the team came together in a wonderful display of grit. Total team effort in the end.
BTW, We will not win in the play-offs without Koelsch setting. Period.

  22. warriorfan October 12, 2015 12:00 pm

    17. I think they will be better on the road honestly , you can tell they weren’t prepared from the get go. Some it maybe from being out late at the football game the night before.
Kendra was off ( bad passing didn’t help) with all the hitters except Magill but lets not forget how good she was against Northridge where she connected well with everyone except Magill.

  23. tongo October 12, 2015 12:19 pm

#19 You make a good case. I had previously posted immediately after the match that I thought Tai was the MVP based on the fact that she really rallied the team when we were really struggling. In a night when we hit sub .200% as a team, there is not much to say other than we barely scratched out a win. Apparently, the coaching staff agrees with me. As you know, volleyball is about team and chemistry – and IMO, the staff recognized and credited Tai as the player who got the team energized when it was critical.

  24. jimmy the lock October 12, 2015 12:47 pm

Not everyone is going to be at the top of their game night in night out. Main thing got the “W” and like kimo mentioned, the team came together. Is it Friday yet?

  25. Cindy Luis October 12, 2015 12:57 pm

Thanks again for all the help just got in Appointment took way longer than I thought.

    Magill Defensive POW,
As mentioned Manu-Olevao nominated for POW
I know that others have said that Koelsch deserved it and I think she should have been considered, coming that close to a triple double and all as a reserve setter.
But one can also look at the box score play by play and see how Manu-Olevao’s service runs helped the team go on scoring runs.
One interesting stat that the SID and I uncovered last night when looking at Koelsch’s block numbers. In the last four matches Manu-Olevao has 5 solos, Magill 4 and Koelsch 3. The oddity is that time Manu-Olevao has 5 solo and 2 assist blocks.

  26. mauna October 12, 2015 1:13 pm

tongo, I agree with you on your comments of Tai in the Beach match, but this is a POW award which includes the Northridge match. Kendra’s stats and performance in the two matches look good to me. Good to have differences of opinions of which I hadn’t thought of.

  27. noblesol October 12, 2015 1:37 pm

Probably just me, but I couldn’t care less about the Big West weekly awards. The best performances, most important towards the end result of a win, frequently come from a committee of players and supporting cast that work seamlessly together. A team that has to rely on one or two great individual performances each week is a brittle team that can be broken.

  28. vballfreak808 October 12, 2015 2:06 pm

Hawaii has 15 of the Top 30 attendances this year. Match vs Long Beach State was No.3 most attended behind match against UCLA at No.2 and Creighton vs Nebraska at No.1

  29. bleachercoach October 12, 2015 3:08 pm

I really appreciate Kalei Greeley backrow play. She is one of the most steadiest 6’2″ athlete that can backrow like a libero. Most of the time, she is money on her serve-receive and passing. Despite the injury from last weekend, she was able to contribute and play very well.

  30. bleachercoach October 12, 2015 3:11 pm

Claire Anderson is also doing a great job serving and had a good run during the match that brought some momentum back to our side. Baby G and Ponce are also doing well back there..I want to call them , ” The 3 Amigos”…

  31. bleachercoach October 12, 2015 3:16 pm

I would love to see the Granato/ Castillo combo come in these next weekends if we can substantiate a lead…This would give Nikki, TMO, and Greeley the needed breather from wear and tear, and also develop that backup outside hitter than could be useful down the stretch

  32. ALLAN October 12, 2015 3:31 pm

I BET NEBRRASKA GIVES TICKETS AWAY.

  33. Bleachercoach October 12, 2015 3:53 pm

Interesting fact is that UC Irvine (Hawaii’s opponent 10/17 Sat.) had a pretty good preseason schedule. They lost to Texas, Minnesota, Washington St., and UCLA…They had some good wins against LMU (3-1), Oregon St. (3-1), and San Diego (3-1)…We need to be very careful not to look to far ahead. We have a BIG “X” marked on everyone’s BW schedule now !!! (lol)

  34. Ryu October 12, 2015 3:55 pm

#31-I agree. Hopefully Nikki, Tai and Kalei gets minimal playing time the last home games against UCR and Fullerton so that they can get some R&R. The road game the following weekend is at LB.

  35. rapid October 12, 2015 5:25 pm

from where its important on the bw:

    “Magill Spearheads Hawai‘i Block Attack

Hawai‘i middle blocker Olivia Magill (Shoreline, Wash./Arizona) averaged more than two blocks per set in earning Big West Women’s Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

She posted a 2.38 blocks per set clip to help UH improve to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the Big West. In a sweep of CSUN, she tallied eight total blocks (one solo) to go along with three kills and three digs.

In a five-set victory over defending Big West champion Long Beach State, Magill showed why the Rainbow Wahine ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in blocks. She tied her season high with 11 blocks, including a career-high three solo that helped limit the 49ers to .097 hitting for the contest.

Magill also contributed solidly on the offensive end against LBSU with eight kills and no errors in 21 attacks for .381 hitting.”

  36. Russ October 12, 2015 6:10 pm

#32 – Nebraska does not have to give tickets away. They have very dedicated and loyal fans. Went to the AVCA Showcase in Omaha in 2005. Our Wahine lost to Nebraska and Penn State. The first match against Nebraska Sarah Mason went down with an injury and the entire arena went quiet. It was very obvious that she was in pain so it was difficult for all to watch. Not many Hawaii fans made the trip so we were just a few green shirts among thousands of red shirted Nebraska fans. When going to the match against Penn State the next day, as i was entering the Qwest Center the ticket collector and a security guard asked us if our injured Hawaii player was ok. We had our green Hawaii shirts on and as we were walking toward the seats I noticed that all of the concessions were empty. One of the concessionaires yelled to us ‘Hey Hawaii..how is your player?’ Wow, it was a nice gesture from the Nebraska fans. Was wondering why the concessions were empty. It was empty because all the Nebraska fans were in their seats cheering and giving the Nebraska volleyball team a standing ovation as they came out for the pregame warm-up! Never saw anything like that before. The spirit, cheering and support from the Nebraska fans for their team before and during the match was amazing to see. Also went to the 2006 Final Four at the Qwest Center in Omaha where Nebraska won the National Championship (Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA and Washington. The Wahine lost to UCLA in the regional final). Final match had 17,000+ fans in attendance and it was a sea of red Nebraska fans. Again thousands of Nebraska fans gave a standing ovation to the volleyball team as they ran out on the court for the pre-game warm up. Their band was there and the Nebraska fans had organized cheers and fight songs. I remember saying to myself that this was special and I have never seen anything like that before. I was there with my Brother-In-Law, so two of us with green Hawaii jerseys among all the red shirts. The fans around us were very friendly and wanted to know more about us and the Hawaii team. Found out that their home volleyball matches at the Coliseum were permanently sold out because it only seated 4,000. And tickets were only available when someone died, and that there was a long waiting list for that. I heard they moved to the Devaney Center in 2013 which was customized for a volleyball configuration because it seated close to 8,000. Very few Hawaii fans went to the AVCA showcase and I got to meet Cindy, Ann Miller and Scott Robbs at the Hilton Hotel across from the Qwest Center. Memory foggy but I remember having dinner there and our waiter was the tallest waiter i have ever seem. Also we were watching the West Oahu Little League team games on cable in the bar area who were on their way to the World Series title. Hawaii Athletic Director Herman Frazier shook our hands and thanked us for following the team to Omaha.

  37. z October 12, 2015 6:58 pm

    Congrats Magill!

  38. haleiwacrossfitter October 12, 2015 7:00 pm

Hawaii’s defense behind their block needs to improve. Lots of “standing digs” attempted. Not normally a weakness for Hawaii, but this season, because their block has been so successful, their floor defense has been lacking…at least from what they are accustomed to being.

And please get Nikki some rest if she needs it. I know what Kanani needed some rest (because of her medical condition), they let her take a break from practice or something. I think Nikki might need some of that. She is really looking like she is hurting out there.

That is going to be a looooong time playing on the road coming up in November. It will be a battle for sure and it could either help or hurt this team. They may be battle tested or battle weary.

  39. haleiwacrossfitter October 12, 2015 7:15 pm

ASU is pretty much out of the top tier teams this season with the loss of Gardner. That sucks. I feel horrible for her. Here’s hoping Hawaii has seen all their injuries for this season already. We have had our share, for sure.

  40. rapid October 12, 2015 7:48 pm

one thing forgot to note about now that wahine is the number 1 ‘armored’ division 1 volleyball team in blocks. should and when na wahine go out on a siege post season, i think they need to use that block on either u-dub or byu. last year while they were confronting u-dub, they matched byus ranking in blocking when they decimated uh 2 years ago (due to lack of reliable blocking). i like to see them use that heavy armor on byu and lay waste to them. 😀

  41. H-Man October 12, 2015 7:53 pm

Russ, that is a nice write-up. Thank you for sharing your experience. On the same note, I found the fans from Nebraska and Tennessee, when they came to Aloha Stadium, to be very friendly and considerate. I remember Aloha Stadium turning into a sea of red since they had so many fans that came to Hawaii. I heard many didn’t have tickets but watched the game on TV back at the hotel. They are true fans. My only bad experience was going to the Coliseum in 2012 to watch Hawaii get humiliated by the Trojans. Their fans, well the ones near us, were flat-out rude and gave us a lot of s**t.

  42. Todde October 12, 2015 9:13 pm

#36 Russ, I really enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing it.

  43. Not an Expert October 12, 2015 11:18 pm

Regarding Kendra she has started now 3 games. She has not played as much as Higgens. Her setting will improve with more game experience. Higgen will never be a formidable blocker due to her height and will have her moments. Hawaii receiving and passing was no where close to LB. Which setter will give the Wahine a better chance to go deep into the tournament?

  44. turfwar October 13, 2015 12:12 am

Totally disagree about Hawaii’s passing being no where close to LBSU. There’s a reason the Wahine had a season high in blocks and there’s a reason they targeted the same player all night. The 5’11” opposite hitter turned libero struggled to pass all night forcing many predictable sets allowing the Wahine to set up camp. It wasn’t their best night passing but they were certainly better than LB over the course of the game. Toward the end other players were stepping in front of the libero if they had a chance to take the serve. Were you even at the game?

  45. blunite October 13, 2015 2:01 am

Stat sheet indicates LBSU was way better than UH in passing. Effective passing is needed for the middle/slide attack which LBSU ran all night; while UH struggled to get middles involved. First set and third set were prime examples. LBSU’s passing did taper off but only in the last 2 sets, proportionately with UH’s tougher serving.

  46. ignaciosaid October 13, 2015 3:51 am

    (36) Russ – have experienced (about the same) at various home arenas across the U.S. There’s always (the Good , the Bad and the UGLY) everywhere (individuals and groups) – even here at S.S.C.(only a few , though). Fans are fans regardless and they will always root for the HOME TEAM! By the way , like your post.(41) H-MAN – I agree about (USC) fanatics—but , believe me , they are some ,everywhere! ’nuff said

  47. Cindy Luis October 13, 2015 8:01 am

Before closing this for the day, a couple of things.
Gardner being out definitely hurts ASU, make take them a few matches to readjust.

ALLAN, please refrain in shouting your posts with the ALL CAPS. Nebraska doesn’t give tickets away, any more than UH gives tickets away. which UH does when giving their sponsors tickets for trade in kind. Both schools use “Tickets issued” instead of turnstile when counting attendance. UH’s numbers, for whatever reason, has been consistently about 1,200-1,400 off between issued and turnstiles.
Nebraska passed Hawaii in attendance two years ago when they opened their new arena which seats more than double of their previous arena. Devaney seats about 8,000, the Coliseum seated 4,000. Huskers hold the NCAA record for most consecutive sellouts in a women’s sport from 2001 to now. Of course, if the Sheriff Center only held 4,000 UH would have sold that out every year from 1994.

  48. H-Man October 13, 2015 8:11 am

ignaciosaid, yes, there are bad fans everywhere, but the bad USC ones that I encountered were really bad. At the time, I was 67 years old and white-haired, with my daughter and grandson who was wearing a USC t-shirt (he wants to play for USC) and a couple of fans broke away from a rowdy bunch at the Culver City light-rail station to confront us. There were two other Hawaii fans in line in front of us. They were in their mid to late 70s and around 5-3 and 5-4 tall. These rowdy fans came up to us to scream in our faces and chest-pump, waving their clenched fists to tell us how they were going to kick our a… These are 20-something year olds around 6-feet tall. No, this is not something you experience just anywhere. In the Coliseum, another fan “slid” down on his stomach from three rows above us to put his face next to my son’s ear to tell him that we would be sorry that we showed up because Hawaii was simply going to get our a… kicked. He stood up, yelled, waved his clenched fists to the delight of his friends above us. I have never seen this kind of display at Aloha Stadium. For fans that travel to away games, maybe you can enlighten me. Do you experience this kind of fan behavior at away games?

  49. Cindy Luis October 13, 2015 8:12 am

one thin about the digging behind the block. Part of that was UH’s concentration on covering the tips and being away of the Beach’s setter who had to be honored on the dump shot. She had 18 attempts vs. Riverside, just 8 vs. Hawaii but still there was a lot of jumping by the blockers with her.
Think because the block is so high that the defense gets screened. and that creates hesitation.

  50. Cindy Luis October 13, 2015 8:30 am

    48. sorry for your experience. as a UCLA grad am refraining from negative comments about that other school across town ‘-)
However, I have experienced obnoxious behavior at a number of places which unfortunately overshadows all the good behavior.
Found Nebraska to be very hospitable both in Lincoln and Omaha
    Penn State was very nice.
Worst I have to say, USC, Long Beach State and UCLA, the latter especially the 1996 men’s championship match between the Bruins and Warriors. The language was so unacceptable that I went to the associate AD, a classmate of mine, and told him to do something. The vitriol could be heard on the radio.
