Monday check-in: first practice, setters, etc

The last thread went crazy.
to answer a few things
First practice now moved to the 9th. It was the 8th but changed yesterday. starts at 6:30 a.m.

don’t know what was up with MyTake complaining about Shoji going to the Olympics to watch his sons and missing 12 3-hour practices. The coaching staff will be having meetings before he goes and they know what he wants to have done. Not sure if there will be Skype involved

As for the setting situation, as of today Shoji said all three setters will compete and the best one will play. Said Higgins had the edge but the best player will play. no redshirt plans.

Mitchem slotted to replace Magill.
Manu-Olevao’s replacement … might be Granato, might not be. Castillo apparently has some sort of injury so he doesn’t know what her status will be when practices start. Same with Greeley, who only got cleared to practice last week.

He said all the incoming players have skills.
As I mentioned previously, don’t be surprised if one or more of the DSs redshirts.

Which day does volleyball officially start practice?

  2. Cindy Luis July 25, 2016 4:30 pm

    1. read the third sentence.

Thaniks, Cindy, Sorry I missed it but it didn’t mention August so it escaped my attention.

  4. H-Man July 25, 2016 5:28 pm

Too bad Greeley only just cleared to practice since off-season surgery. Probably behind in shaking the rust off, but Granato will do a good job. No mention of Maglio, but I read that she might be switched to Opposite behind Nikki Taylor. Correct? As for setter, just guessing that Berg will have a lot to say about who starts.

  5. rabbits ears July 25, 2016 6:05 pm

I guess that how rumors start. Shoji said Mags may switch to opposite in 2017, after Nikki graduates.

  6. darkfire35 July 25, 2016 7:01 pm

    5. Yeah, I believe Shoji said he would put Mags there to “showcase” her skills for 2017. Did you see her in the preseason exhibition with Iowa? They were practicing serving and she did a jump serve like Nikki and Tayler!!! OMG it looked really good! If she continues to do well in beach like this past year, she will be awesome in 2017. She already has that “knowing where the other team is” skill when she dinks or spikes the ball.
Did I see right on the roster that Burns is redshirting this year?

  7. blunite July 25, 2016 7:06 pm

    – Setters: Higgins is a lock due to her jump serve and experience. (Iosia and Koelsch will share back-up.)
    – Castillo’s injury: Many options. A provocative one is to run a middle-centric lineup with Nikki moving to OH2, and both Annie and Mags on the floor. This would boost the left side, speed up the attack on the right (Sets: 1, dbl quick, 3, slide), and isolate the blockers (1 on 1). The issue is timing, between setter and middles. (Sibley is the X factor but Shoji usually does not start freshmen.)
    – An idea would be for Tom (Pestolesi) to video all the practices so they can review them with Shoji when he returns.

  8. darkfire35 July 25, 2016 7:20 pm

    7. blunite – Shoji had to start Nikki as a freshman when Croson had problems/transferred. Nice ideas tho.
I think Tom will be recording the practices. With Shoji only 7 hours away, he could send the videos via zip files or dropbox and discuss. Shoji did say he was going to keep in touch about the practices.

    6. Burns redshirted last season and roster reflects that as R/Fr. Next season, 2017 it will be rostered as R/So. and so on.

blunite, not saying you are wrong, but have you seen the stats on Norene’s serving? According to Maxpreps, she had a 24.2% ace percentage last year.

  12. Big Island VB fan July 26, 2016 8:33 am

    11. Can’t compare high school to college. High school players are not as adept at passing as college players so it’s easier to ace high school players. However, if she improves quickly and gets into a faster rhythm, she may get considerable playing time later in the season, especially against weaker teams in the conference. A starting role may be possible near the end of the season if she happens to surpass Higgins. I wish her well.

  13. Ron July 26, 2016 10:03 am

What I remember about Norene’s serving was her excellent control and placement. That will work at any level.

  14. haleiwacrossfitter July 26, 2016 11:26 am

Yeah, if there is one skill that can transfer over from high school to college, would be the serve. The hardest is blocking. A great serve is a great serve..on any level.

Norene’s jump serve is pretty darn good, too. I think that neutralizes her and Higgins, not separates them.

Anyway, I would prefer not to see Nikki on the left. I think the right is where she has developed. She can really see the full court from the right side, which is why men have their top hitters there and why it is right side hitters can be so effective. The court looks very different from that side of the net.

Nikki is solid, knows her game out there. I would hate to see the D set gone, too. It’s hard for players to play on the left in the front and then transition to the right in the back. Not easy. Nikki needs to stay on the right. We have options for the left right now. Greeley, Granato, Castillo and Sibley. Within that four we will find the right two to play out there.

I’m freaking excited. Especially to see Carlini play in person. She will be our country’s next star.

Aloha! I am getting excited to see this season start.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  16. Slugger July 26, 2016 12:52 pm

    Oops! GO WAHINE!!!

Wish I could go watch with my Mom. She’ll cheer for me!

    14. Fair points. The proximity of the setter and the hitter often determines the accuracy of the set. With the “middle centric” line-up the 4 sets to the middles are no more than 5′, as opposed to the longer sets to the outsides.

The straight forward OH, MB, Opposite line-up often faces a double block. The middle centric line-up forces a 1 to 1 isolation on the blockers, due to 2 middles running “quicks”. (Minnesota uses a similar system)

Shoji could also incorporate a hybrid system, switching back and forth (with Annie or Mags as the opposite). Many, many options.

  18. Cindy Luis July 26, 2016 2:23 pm

    3. my bad for not putting in Aug.

    4. the comment about Maglio moving to OPP was for 2017 after Taylor is gone, not this year.
As for Berg having ‘a lot to say’ Shoji has valued the input from all his assistants. Just as he listened to Ah Mow-Santos … and Hall … last season, he’ll listen to Berg and Pestolesi and Hall. But Shoji will have the last word.
    6. as someone pointed out earlier, R-Fr means she’s used a redshirt year already

    7. as mentioned, they may Skype during practices. They’re planning something along those lines. I wouldn’t worry about it. Plenty of ways for them to get information.

    14. Taylor will hit left in one rotation.

    17. et al. they have a lot of options.

The only other thing Shoji said about the setting position when we spoke Monday was that Iosia had the best hands of the three.

  19. blunite July 27, 2016 7:54 am

It may help Shoji to have a coach specifically assigned to the DS’. With so many DS it will be difficult for him to keep track of them. Moreover, keeping track of the game substitutions may become tricky if he uses a lot of them.

  20. Cindy Luis July 28, 2016 3:48 pm

I’m sure they will be fine when it comes to the subs. Think it was Ah Mow-Santos who was in charge of tracking that last year. could be wrong.
