he American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its Beach Volleyball All-America Team on Thursday with the Rainbow Wahine pair of senior Mikayla Tucker and true freshman Morgan Martin earning recognition.

It’s the first such honor for Martin (Sr., Placerville, Calif.) and Tucker (Fr., Mission Viejo, Calif.), who became the seventh and eighth All-Americans, respectively, in program history. UH has now had at least one All-American in five of the last six years.

Earlier this month the duo was named Big West Pairs Team of the Year, while Martin also earned Big West Freshman of the Year honors. Martin and Tucker were integral in UH’s best season-ever, after playing at the top of the lineup in all 36 matches. The duo went 20-15 overall and racked up wins against seven ranked opponents, including victories over the top pairs of Pepperdine, Florida State, Long Beach State, and Arizona.

The pair helped UH clinch its second consecutive Big West title after winning at the No. 1 flight in the championship match vs. Long Beach State. By season’s end, the duo helped UH win a school-record 29 matches, advance to the NCAA Championship semifinals, and earn a No. 3 ranking in the AVCA final poll.

Tucker leaves UH tied for second all-time dual match wins (60) and third in overall wins (80), while Martin joins Jane Croson (2012), Nikki Taylor (2014), and Emily Maglio (2016) as the fourth UH freshman to be named an All-American.

Too bad they didn’t award lower flights as I think Kan/Homayun were very deserving.

I agree. Kan/ Homayun should have been named AA too. Their record was impeccable.

Agree but it’s not how it works. Congrats to the SandBows. Saw Hall on Wednesday right before I interviewed Ljungqvist. We spoke briefly. Agreed that hard to believe two years ago we were in Europe with the indoor team. #WahineEuro
