More on Ljungquist

by Cindy Luis on August 23, 2014

Someone asked how the players reacted to being introduced to her. Shoji’s intro wasn’t complete. He didn’t mentioned that she was the 1996 NCAA Player of the Year.
Which leads to another pet peeve of mine.

UH should do a better job of showcasing its great players. Why not have big jerseys put up for people like Collins, Ljungquist, Kamana’o, Katz and even basketball players Judy Mosley and Anthony Carter? And at least banners of the Olympians such as Ah Mow-Santos, Stanley, etc.

OK enough about that. Anyway

Ljungquist is in Hawaii on vacation, to visit friends and ‘recharge’ as she takes a break from law school in Stockholm, Sweden.

Said Hawaii is the best place to do that recharging. She spent the day at the beach. Didn’t ask if she had gotten some beach volleyball in. After her indoor career in Europe she also represented Sweden in FIVB competition, the majority of the time partnering with former Wahine Karin Lundqvist.

She’s in the middle of law school. In Sweden it takes 4 1/2 years. Think she’s starting her third year and next spring will concentrate on a specialty. Said she hasn’t decided on it yet because she’s enjoying all of her classes, but definitely something internationally. Suggest sports contract law and she says, There you go.

Has been coaching club in her hometown of Valuntuna a little. Said she doesn’t think about how long it takes to get to Hawaii because it’s worth it. Said she flew from Stockholm to NY to LA to HNL. all on United.

Didn’t want her picture taken since she had just come in off the beach but perhaps I’ll convince her if she comes to the scrimmage.

Cindy, I like your idea of the Jersey, mention it to BJ, or Sheriff. If not a Jersey, then at least one Banner, for 1st Team All-Americans, and another Banner, for Player of Year. So when recruits and new players come in to the SSC, they can see it. I mean, the Wahine Softball Team has that along the outfield fence, why can’t the Wahine Volleyball Team have something similar, using banners.

Have discussed it with Ads going back to Frazier. Usually comes down to a money issue. Have suggested that fans be able to sponsor a jersey.

If $$ is an issue, maybe have the boosters get involved. They can fundraise to help defray the costs of banners in the SSC. It is a pity that with a rich legacy such as Wahine Volleyball, banners recognizing the achievements of the 40+ years of hard work, sweat, and determination is NOT displayed in the SSC.

That is a great idea Cindy, especially with fantastic athletes that have put the university on the map…like Angelica Ljungquist for example! There only have been 4 Wahine to be named National Player of the Year!

How much would it cost to put up a jersey? Couldn’t be that much.

Karin Lundqvist! I loved her. Lovely smile and pretty good middle too.
