Hawaii 3, Kansas 2

Just Gametracker tonight

http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/?id=169511

Hall will be going solo tonight
Baxter is going to mainland with his club team for a qualifier

unlike last week, no ‘seniors’ expected to play. Mitchem was only in because Burns wasn’t well and they didn’t want to move Castillo to middle.

As mentioned, Kansas pretty veteran team, five returning starters here, including a couple of All-Amiercans. they also have two of their graduated seniors on the bench in starting libero and middle.

Shoji dropped by beach Monday. Looking well. should be about done with his radiation. said he was going to the mainland but would be back in April.

Has the match started? Live Stats score 0-0 and its 7:15.

  3. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:19 pm

live stats finally working. UH up 21-19. TO Kansas

  4. H-Man March 21, 2017 7:20 pm

    Score just came on. H21-K19

  5. Kazu March 21, 2017 7:20 pm

2 I’m wondering the same thing. Game tracker don’t even have the line up.

  6. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:21 pm

Much improved blocking and passing. 23-20 Hawaii

  7. Kazu March 21, 2017 7:22 pm

6 Guess you at the game. How’s the crowd?

  8. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:22 pm

    Hawaii wins 25-20.

  9. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:22 pm

    Hawaii wins 25-20!

  10. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:23 pm

    Not much crowd

  11. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:25 pm

Smallish crowd. they should be improved in blocking. they worked on that this week. Hall said they didn’t do much blocking practice for Minnesota. Plus Kansas is easier to scout than Minnesota. Kansas has 5 starters back from last year. Minnesota played with a lot of non-starters from last season.

  12. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:26 pm

Magpie’s attack was at least a foot in. linesman called it out. wow.

  13. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:27 pm

    Poor passing 5-1 K

  14. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:28 pm

KU puts down a couple of overpasses of serves and it’s 5-1. TO UH

  15. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:30 pm

    13. appreciate you updating but no need for you to do the score update.

  16. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:32 pm

    Hitting errors, killing Hawaii

  17. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:35 pm

Burns went down. seems to be OK. Castillo hits wide. it’s 14-5

  18. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:36 pm

Ross in for Sibley. Granato out of the back row. 15-6

  19. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:42 pm

Payne looks mortal, maybe she is vacationing.

  20. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:47 pm

Smith serves long. KU wins 25-20

  21. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:47 pm

Kansas does not look better than Hawaii. K is strictly high ball sets and definitely not Top 10

  22. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:50 pm

    21. think it is pretty even. they’re are trying out several liberos and a second middle.
think Smith got caught in the front row prior to her serving.

  23. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:51 pm

Passing about even this set, errors were the difference

  24. Bleachercoach March 21, 2017 7:51 pm

My observation I think Beach and Indoor is much for Coach Hall. I think when Ah Mow comes in she can work on making these indoor players better. The girls are thinking too much Sand and not Indoors
Many of the girls lacking fundamental, strength, and movement.

  25. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:52 pm

Shoji just showed up. sitting in the Giovanni box and signing an autograph.

  26. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:54 pm

    24. have to disagree. for one thing the indoor players are not at sand during this time except for Maglio and Iosia. both on a volunteer basis. though on game days they do come to support.

  27. Blunite March 21, 2017 7:55 pm

Can’t go fast without passing well

  28. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:55 pm

    24. another thing. Hall has been doing it this way for three years. the difference right now he has no help on the bench tonight. and they are down an indoor assistant.

  29. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:57 pm

    24. Ah Mow-Santos is arriving in April indoor won’t have much practice left.

  30. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 7:58 pm

    Kansas on a 5-0 run. it’s 12-5. T

  31. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:00 pm

Actually, not too bad orientation to a faster offense. It will get better as the passing goes.

  32. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:02 pm

    24. plus not all the indoor players are crossing over. Granato isn’t, Burns isn’t, Kahakai isn’t. Neither is Ross or Okino, Freitas or Koelsch. so not sure what you are seeing about ‘strength and movement.’

  33. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:05 pm

    31. they are trying to go uptempo but as you said the passing isn’t always there. Maglio wasn’t ready for a couple of the quick sets, which were a little low.

  34. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:07 pm

Granato and Sibley both with hitting errors. Kansas up 20-13. TO UH

  35. Bleachercoach March 21, 2017 8:09 pm

Cindy what i mean is the indoors can have more, attention when they have there Head Coach there. The other players on the indoor that i dont want to mention should be getting in better shape during this time of the year. Only Savannah looks like she has been wirking hard off season. When Robyn comes she will give more attention to Indoors and Coach Jeff who i really love can cinventrate on Sand…Will Coach Ah Mow allow Indoor players to play Beach instead of working out anf getting better

  36. Hapaguy March 21, 2017 8:11 pm

“Mitchem was only in because Burns was well and they didn’t want to move Castillo to middle.” Cindy did you mean that Burns “wasn’t” well?

  37. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:14 pm

some pretty poor officiating. Kansas wins 25-20.

  38. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:17 pm

Amazing that Hawaii kept the score respectable, given the inconsistent passing. The good part: In system looks good, The bad part: What you see is what you get.

  39. Bleachercoach March 21, 2017 8:18 pm

    Thats okay

  40. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:25 pm

Sibley hitting smarter, officials not so much

  41. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:31 pm

    35. don’t know why you think things might change. The coaches all agree that playing beach makes for better all-around players.
I really don’t know what you’re seeing in terms of ‘working hard offseason.’
they are all in the weight room.

Hall is at all practices, indoor and beach. He is committed to both. He wasn’t at some practices in January because he also is recruiting.
guess what I don’t understand is why you’re questioning this now after they’ve been doing crossover training ever since they started the beach program in 2012.

  42. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:32 pm

    Wahine up 16-13. TO Kansas

  43. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:34 pm

Kansas has tied it at 17. TO UH

  44. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:39 pm

Granato on the 3-meter, gets a friendly tape, it’s 22-20. TO KU

  45. Maverick March 21, 2017 8:39 pm

On a separate note, Emily Hartong has completed her eligibility in the Korean league:

    https://www.instagram.com/p/BRryRXslne1/?taken-by=emilyhartong&hl=en

  46. Bleachercoach March 21, 2017 8:39 pm

Again i have much respect for Coach Jeff and it a hard position to be coaching up an Indoor Spring Season and doing his Head Coaching Duty…All i was saying is Ah Mow will be able to focus on making the Indoors players better concentrating on making them hopefully better in every area of the game. I am hopeful when Robyn arrives she will is spending time getting them in top shape and bettering their game in every area. As of now many of them have noti improved. If this will be April soon and they dont have much time to get in better shape. (aka Annie Mitchem last year to this year)
When you look good and move around faster that equates to that trying effort and passion to be better than last. Thats where Champions and returning to Champion quality starts

  47. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:40 pm

My guess is that the conferences are about even. But this is a down year for Hawaii while Kansas has higher aspirations

  48. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:42 pm

    46. we’ll see what happens.

    Kansas up 23-22. TO UH

  49. Bleachercoach March 21, 2017 8:43 pm

Emily Hartong is one of my favorites with Kim Willoughby and Tee Williams
    Very Dynamic game changers

  50. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:46 pm

    41. have no idea what you mean.

  51. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:46 pm

call goes Hawaii way. UH wins it 27-25

  52. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:47 pm

    49. it’s Teee.

  53. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:47 pm

Sorry Kansas, the officiating cuts both ways!

  54. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:50 pm

I sincerely hope the officiating improves by the time the regular season starts.

  55. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 8:57 pm

UH up 9-7 in Set 5. TO KU

  56. Blunite March 21, 2017 8:58 pm

Kansas passing has gone south, making blocking easy for Hawaii.

  57. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 9:01 pm

Hawaii up 13-8 in set 5. Wahine with 19 blocks. TO KU

  58. Blunite March 21, 2017 9:03 pm

Crossing my fingers that KU passing stays south. If they win their conference it won’t be due to their passing.

  59. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 9:05 pm

Kansas has come back to 14-11. TO UH

  60. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 9:06 pm

    58. oh please. it’s spring. they’ll be fine.

  61. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 9:07 pm

    Maglio ends it 15-11

  62. Blunite March 21, 2017 9:09 pm

KU coach not over-joyed with his team. Team is hashing out what just happened.

  63. Maverick March 21, 2017 9:12 pm

    62. I know it’s spring ball, but Kansas probably underperformed given all the returning starters and UH’s loss of its top two hitters.

  64. Blunite March 21, 2017 9:53 pm

    63.
Regardless, if a player can pass well it will show, even on a bad day. I did not see an elite passer among any of KU’s Liberos. As for improvement, take Kahakai and tell me whether her passing has significantly improved in 4 yrs.

  65. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 9:58 pm

    63. maybe. it was their first spring match and they are looking for a libero and a second middle. Hawaii block was pretty good and when Jayhawks’ passing went south, they weren’t able to take some of the swings they had earlier. a lot of roll shots. they used 12 players and Hawaii used all 14 who were suited up

  66. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 10:01 pm

    64. Kansas lost the Libero of the Year who was a four-year starter. They used tonight as a tryout and tried four.
I think Kahakai has improved as she has gotten healthy, particularly from her freshman year.

  67. Cindy Luis March 21, 2017 10:02 pm

    64. as for Kansas’ liberos, 2 were freshmen and 2 juniors, none of whom had much experience.

  68. noblesol March 21, 2017 10:29 pm

Smallish crowd, but they got rowdy, I’d give them a little credit for getting into the heads of the KU players in the 5th set.

Ref’s blew some calls, but it cut both ways. KU coach got a little excited about it in the 5th, don’t think it helped his players and didn’t sway anyone.

Hawaii had a much more focused first set. The second and third set KU came out serving tough and Hawaii wasn’t ready to match their intensity, found them selves down 4, 5, 6 most of those sets. Had some untimely service errors. They managed to turn it around in the 4th and 5th sets, gain back some momentum, and the crowd rewarded them.

Team blocking was good, digging ok. Team ‘want to’ much improved. Granato passing much improved, Castillo digging and passing was very good, Kahaki had a better match, they did a better job of covering tips, and Mags broke out the slide tonight which was effective when Iosia didn’t blow her set. Lot’s of improvement over the Minnesota match. But, the quick sets need a lot of work, and the passing most of the time didn’t support a quick offense. Occasionally it worked, maybe 15 – 20% of the time. Too many times they got blocked or hit into the net. They weren’t fooling anyone with their quick sets because usually they only had one option, and they were just putting themselves in a poor position to terminate anything. Maybe it just needs work, but maybe also they don’t have the personnel to run it.

  69. Shar March 21, 2017 10:38 pm

Who was the second coach tonight?

  70. Kazu March 22, 2017 6:42 am

Out of the four recruits coming in does anyone knows if there’s a chance there may be a starter.

  71. Robin March 22, 2017 7:46 am

Went to all three matches. Some thoughts on last night…
Emily is by far the most consistent player and still a blocking force in the middle. Burns is still a major work in progress…we shall see what the freshmen coming in can do to push her.
For the most part, I like Granato’s hitting (more than most I think)- missed some high hands a few times, but more explosive than either Sibley or Castillo, pipe set was quite effective. Remember one specific time the ball was set off the net, and I noticed she purposely hit at about 80% of her speed, so the block was on the way down, and she got it through (instead of just pounding it). Despite her size, OK at blocking and her float serve was doing pretty well.
First time seeing Castillo hit so much outside…I can see she is looking at placement as much as power. When she gets aligned well to the hitter, pretty solid blocker. Really liked her floater- knuckles at lot after going over the net.
Sibley lacks the vertical and the pop in her arm. Only shot was that hard angle which was picked up most of the time. Did see her hit a nice line shot once when the opportunity afforded itself. Had some shaky passing at times.
Smith had too many service errors, but was fairly steady otherwise.
Really liked Freitas’ solid play late, as well as her serve.
Kahakai played well defensively, but her bump set was too wide and tight several times.
Iosia had a few occasions where he planned hesitations through off the block, allowing wide open kills for Mags. Quite pretty plays.

  72. Robin March 22, 2017 7:54 am

Game was very entertaining. Liked the mini comebacks in games 2 and 3…and the Wahine held off match point. Small crowd still made a lot of noise and really got into in in the 5th. I feel the match definitely left a good taste in the players, coaches, and fans mouths, especially considering that Kansas was a strong opponent.

  73. Andrew March 22, 2017 8:19 am

A very impressive win. I like how the fact that Hall set out to work on blocking a lot more for this match and from what Cindy explained, it sure worked. Didn’t Kansas also win the Big 12 last season? Especially if they are returning five starters, that’s a very veteran team.

  74. blunite March 22, 2017 8:40 am

A win over a ranked Power 5 conference foe! Frankly, despite their 5 returnees their passing (or lack thereof) takes away from the other elements of their game.

Whatever Hall did to improve Hawaii’s blocking and passing should be bottled and saved for the regular season. My hunch is that Minnesota contributed (in no small part) by bruising the Wahine pride. (Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned x 14.)

  75. Ron March 22, 2017 10:29 am

Various comments about the Wahine players and teams progress much appreciated. I really hope the progress noted above continues. Don’t give up on the men’s team yet. We still have an excellent chance.

  76. Andrew March 22, 2017 1:00 pm

Makes you kind of wonder how much better they could have done against Minnesota if they had concentrated more on blocking prior to that match. Not saying they would have won the match but possibly made more of a match out of it rather than getting swept. From details about the match seemed like blocking was a big factor

  77. Cindy Luis March 22, 2017 3:10 pm

    a couple of observations.
I think fatigue played into Kansas effort at the end. They were just beginning their 20 hours of team spring practice and just getting back into playing shape. After Set 4 they weren’t getting the elevation they had been getting, their slides weren’t as quick.
thought it was impressive how aggressive Granato was at the end, and the power she still had on the 3-meter attacks. knocked over a couple of Kansas players at various times.

    69. he wasn’t really a coach. he’s been one of their motivational speakers. don’t know his name.

    76. what hurt them most against Minnesota, especially early, was their serving. they had 6 SEs in Set 1, lost by 6.
Also what you saw last night happened as well, they got stuck in rotations and gave up runs of points.

earlier some had commented about Ah Mow-Santos training the indoor players when she gets here. Indoor is done in terms of spring practice. they have reached their 20 hours allowed by the NCAA. What they will will continue to do is weight workouts and some cross training on the sand.
Beach team leaves Friday for California. not sure who other than Maglio and Iosia are traveling.
As for who might be able to help immediately, of the three the thought is Lipscomb might be the one.
Sophia Howling – 6-3, Middle Hitter, Venice High School (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Shaney Lipscomb – 6-2 Middle Hitter/Outside Hitter, Cathedral Catholic High School (San Diego, Calif.)
Skyler Williams – 6-2, Middle Hitter, Mayfair HS (Lakewood, Calif.)

  78. Ron March 22, 2017 4:10 pm

I think all three are very promising but I think Skyler Williams will be the first to contribute based on the viewing of all available tapes and the the fact that she has played at the highest club level . College should not be that big of an adjustment for her. Like I said , I found something to like in each of their games. They are all three very athletic volleyball players. It was also nice to read that Granato is passing better and hitting smarter. We need her to do well.

  79. rabbits ears March 22, 2017 6:34 pm

Hope Coach Robyn finds a way to keep Maglio in the game full time. Whether it’s changing position or staying in the middle. She is much too valuable to play halftime.

  80. Richard March 22, 2017 6:37 pm

    <>

I saw a couple of Cath Catholic games on TV. In the games I saw, Lipscomb was the fourth best hitter and played only front row ( mo passing?). She did have a wrap around her thigh and occasionally showed some power. There was a 6’3″ middle going to USC. A big tall Polynesian girl outside, and a 6″3″ freshman middle that all played better than Lipscomb in the games I saw, and they all got post season honors. Don’t know if Lipscomb was injured?

  81. tako March 22, 2017 6:48 pm

IMO regarding the incoming recruits, thought Howling maybe the most physically ready of the two MBs. Shaney and Arden Misraje (dark horse player) will be understudies at the OH; D1 will be a huge step up for them. Let’s hope they ALL surprise us and push the returnees to the next level.

  82. blunite March 22, 2017 7:43 pm

    RE: Middles

I’ve noticed a Wahine tendency to recruit middles, then switch them to OH. Whether by design or just happenstance it appears to be a way to compete with the Power 5 conferences for OH talent. Got to hand it to Hall for such foresight. Hopefully, it continues to yield dividends for years to come. Hard to beat an accomplished blocker on the outside who can also bomb (bring the heat).

  83. Kahuna March 22, 2017 7:53 pm

Howling is definitely a MB. Lipscomb and Williams have films of them hitting outside so there is a possibility that both or either could move out there….if Sibley or Castillo does not perform up to par.

Misraje definitely intrigues me. She looks to have a pretty live arm and can jump. The concern is whether she can pass. I have seen any video of her passing so I am dubious of her abilty to pass. If she can’t pass then the only spot open will be OPP. We will then have a roster full of non-passers. Not ideal.

  84. Kahuna March 22, 2017 7:55 pm

Oop…I meant to say I have NOT seen any videos of Arden Misraje passing.^^^^^

  85. T103 March 22, 2017 9:20 pm

Wow, didn’t know we were bringing in such tall middles, which is awesome! I hope maybe we can run a super fast offense like texas or somethig. I know Hawai’i is known as a scrappy undersized team, but it would be good if we were able to recruit tall players and also run a faster offense. But thats just me, excited for next year already. BUT we must focus on the current season at hand, go warriors!

  86. blunite March 22, 2017 9:57 pm

    #82.

    – Lipscomb, per news reports, is a 6 rotation player. She is also a decent passer (google her name and there are videos of her passing during games). So if she plays outside it will prolly be on the left.

    – Howling, at 6’3″, is an intriguing prospect as she is purported to be very athletic and very sharp. (I like tall athletic opposites, who can shut down the right side, hitting would be a bonus.)

  87. Ron March 23, 2017 7:30 am

Bringing in a middle and converting her to the left worked out pretty good with Emily Hartoung.

  88. po'okela March 23, 2017 7:53 am

kim willoughby was a converted middle, don’t forget that hah.

  89. Robin March 23, 2017 12:34 pm

I swear the right blocker looks more like Emma Smith (#5) than McKenna Granato…but that can’t be???

    http://www.staradvertiser.com/2017/03/22/sports/rainbow-wahine-step-up-to-beat-kansas/

  90. Kalihifc March 23, 2017 1:45 pm

Next season’s schedule includes: UCLA, Marquette, San Diego, Western Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, BYU, Baylor, Nevada, Northern Arizona.

  91. kahuna March 23, 2017 3:50 pm

#89…it was Emma Smith blocking. Hall ran out of substitutions and was forced to use Emma in the front row. Sibley was supposed to come in but was stuck due to no more subbing.

  92. Hot March 23, 2017 5:46 pm

    82. Not noticing a tendency of UH recruiting middles and turning them to OHs. Hartong, for sure. But she was a starting middle for two years and was only converted after Danielson graduated. There were some middles who were converted to OPP, not OH. Most recent example would be Huff. I don’t think it’s by design. Shoji has also recruited an OH (Gregory) and turned her into a middle. Lipscomb is already listed as an MB/OH (not sure if it’s OH or OPP), so there would be no converting if she plays either or both positions in college.

I hope the coaching staff really takes a good look at the libero position. IMHO, Smith is a better passer and quicker defender than Kahakai. She already was last year.

  93. blunite March 23, 2017 7:50 pm

    #92.
    RE: Libero

The scholarship may be the issue; especially, if Kahakai was promised a 4 year ride. Emma does not have a scholarship so giving her the position but not the scholarship may become an issue.

  94. blunite March 23, 2017 8:03 pm

    RE: Libero, Redux

Note: The coach who gave the scholarship to the Libero has since retired. Not sure if a new coach is still bound to the promises of the predecessor.

  95. Robin March 23, 2017 8:23 pm

    Thanks kahuna,
I was there but I didn’t notice. Thought that would have to be the case (ran out of # of subs) if it was her.

  96. Robin March 23, 2017 8:24 pm

Does Emma have a beach scholly?

  97. Robin March 23, 2017 8:28 pm

Oh yea, beach scholarship players can’t play on the indoor team, if I remember correctly.

  98. islandman March 23, 2017 10:04 pm

    Check this block party.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HquB2IkmQXs

  99. Hot March 24, 2017 2:49 am

    93. Could be. But wasn’t Sarah Mendoza a walk-on in 2014? She started over Kahakai then. Maybe Ah Mow-Santos will start Smith over Kahakai if she sees Smith as the better player.

  100. blunite March 24, 2017 5:32 am

    #99.

The Wahine nation can only hope. Anderson may be the second best passer who has mobility, after Smith. At any rate UH could do better in the passing department.

  101. Cindy Luis March 24, 2017 9:24 am

sorry, thought I had mentioned that about Smith in the front row, stuck there when they ran out of subs, and that we discussed that the Kansas setter didn’t take advantage of her being there. think they hit over her once but didn’t go back to that.

    89. yes caption was incorrect. i am not sure where the mistake occurred since i don’t handle photos.

we’ll see what happens when the new recruits come in.
don’t understand the continued bashing, for lack of a better word, of Kahakai. She was invited by the national team staff to attend the tryouts so obviously they like what she does.
