Kansas State 3, Hawaii 1; UCI sweeps USC

Big win for UCI, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 over No. 7 USC. Women of Troy now 0-3

As Shoji said last night, Higgins will start. Both he and Berg said the problems they had weren’t all on Higgins. When Iosia came in, Burns also did which allowed Castillo to go back in her normal position.
I am expecting Maglio not to play back row tonight. but we’ll see.

its not that it was all higgins fault. but when iosia went in she not only played like a boss but substantially improved everyones performance. in response to the broadcast, shes the difference maker. she showed last night that she doesnt play just to hang out with the big gals, but that she is one of the big gals.

  2. Don Williams August 27, 2016 7:02 pm

Sounds like Mick Haley has a problem…

  3. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:04 pm

starting tonight: Granato, Smith, Burns, Higgins, Greeley, Maglio, Kahakai.

  4. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:05 pm

    1. not going to argue with you. I liked what Iosia did.

No Baylee Johnson is a problem for Usc their best setter and second best hitter.

When she gets her grades up wouldn’t mind her as a wahine to play opposite. Seems like her time at usc is over.

    7. that’s not going to happen. noticed Alexa Strange didn’t play either.

  10. haleiwacrossfitter August 27, 2016 7:17 pm

Alexa Strange? Did Mick change his rule regarding indoor players playing beach, vice versa?

I’m a big fan of the Broadway musical Hamilton. Every time they say Sibley’s hometown, Lafayette, I can’t help but think of Guns and Ships from the musical. I love it. If you don’t know it, look it up, you won’t regret it.

  11. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:18 pm

K-State challenging the line call. looked in from the replay but we’ll see.

  12. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:19 pm

    replay overrules it. it’s 12-10.

  13. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:19 pm

    10. i don’t know. she’s on the roster. She’s also done with beach eligibility

  14. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:22 pm

Hawaii up 15-13 at the TTO

  15. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:26 pm

Hawaii up 17-14 on a Maglio block. TO KState

  16. z August 27, 2016 7:26 pm

Nice one on one block by Granato. Smith is solid back there.

  17. Hot August 27, 2016 7:28 pm

    7. How is Baylee Johnson USC’s second-best hitter when they return Abercrombie, Ford and Ruddins, while adding Lainier? Johnson recorded 0.85 kills per set and hit .141. Again, how is she their second-best hitter?

Sheesh, it’s just the second match of the season. UH has 19 players on the roster and already you want Johnson to come over next year.

    10. Alexa Strange played against Santa Clara. She had six assists and one dig in two sets.

  18. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:29 pm

Hawaii called for delay of game. losing the serve and a point. 19-16.

  19. Setaone August 27, 2016 7:29 pm

Has Emma Smith overtaken Anderson as top DS?

  20. haleiwacrossfitter August 27, 2016 7:30 pm

Emma Smith is great back there. Looks like she beat out Anderson.

As for Strange, I think she is on the roster indoor because she used up her beach eligibility.

  21. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:31 pm

1 7. thanks. looked at the wrong box.
Shoji calls timeout as KState pulls to 19-17. They wanted to get Anderson in to serve for Maglio but it supposedly didn’t happen within the allotted 6 seconds.

  22. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 7:33 pm

Why not use Iosia as a serving sub with her wicked serve.

  23. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:33 pm

    20. yes, said that about Strange. See 13
I’m a little surprised about Smith. but Anderson is the sub for Maglio so that’s how it’s set up. It’s 21-18. TO Wildcats.

  24. Hot August 27, 2016 7:36 pm

    23. Smith is pretty accomplished. Maybe she’s the top DS who can handle passing, serving and defense. The trio of Anderson, Ponce and Guinasso haven’t really been used to pass the past two years. They’re mostly used to serve.

  25. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:37 pm

    UH wins 25-19

  26. Hot August 27, 2016 7:38 pm

According to livestats, Faith Ma’afala came out of nowhere and got herself a kill. Was that Guinasso?

  27. z August 27, 2016 7:38 pm

Higgins has a really good serve.

  28. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:44 pm

    26. think you’ll see livestats updated. Greeley is in the front row.

  29. R.M. August 27, 2016 7:45 pm

Kalei is in the front right now.

  30. Hot August 27, 2016 7:50 pm

    29. Thanks, Cindy. It’s updated now. It was the same thing yesterday when they had Ma`afala listed as playing too.

  31. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:51 pm

NOTE: this blog does not allow comments about a player’s looks. Two have been deleted.

  32. Hot August 27, 2016 7:51 pm

Granato and Maglio taking a lot of swings.

  33. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:54 pm

Another challenge by Kansas State. about a ball being in or not

  34. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:55 pm

ruling over turned. Wildcats lead 12-10

  35. Hot August 27, 2016 7:56 pm

Shoji not using a lot of players. Would love to see Iosia and Castillo come in if needed.

  36. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 7:56 pm

    32. they are. they get stuck in a few rotations where there aren’t a lot of options like when Higgins is front left.

  37. Hot August 27, 2016 7:59 pm

Did Ponce and Castillo play? livestats say so.

  38. HawaiiMongoose August 27, 2016 8:00 pm

How the heck does K-State win that appeal when every replay angle showed the ball was out??

  39. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:00 pm

    Iosia in for Higgins.

  40. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:01 pm

Shoji challenging the non net call.

  41. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:02 pm

right call. it was a net. it’s 16-18.

  42. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:05 pm

    Wildcats up 22-19. TO UH

  43. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:08 pm

Iosia with an ace. UH closes to 22-21. TO KSU

  44. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:09 pm

    37. obviously live stats having a problem.

  45. Hot August 27, 2016 8:10 pm

    Iosia. Impressive.

  46. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:10 pm

ace by Iosia, kill by Sibley. UH up 23-22. TO KSU

  47. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:12 pm

    45. i agree. Higgins has 2 aces as well.

  48. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:12 pm

    another ace by Iosia. 24-22

  49. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:14 pm

very young lineup out there. 2 freshmen, 2 sophomores. 2 juniors

  50. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:17 pm

    Castillo in for Koelsch.

  51. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:19 pm

Greeley long on the corner shot. KSU wins 30-28

  52. z August 27, 2016 8:19 pm

    Poor passing.

  53. Hot August 27, 2016 8:20 pm

That was a nail biter. And I was just following live stats.

  54. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 8:20 pm

    Passing problems again.

  55. kimo browner August 27, 2016 8:22 pm

Someone explain the last sub for kendra

  56. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 8:24 pm

45 and 48. that ‘dangerous’ setter strikes again.

  57. z August 27, 2016 8:27 pm

Need to put a bigger block on Zumach.

  58. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 8:28 pm

wahine need to reorganize. it was kind of in disarray from the start of set 2.

k state saves the wahine with their service errors and on the same token hawai’i minimizes theirs. so thats good.

dave ought to not bring iosia in too late or when things go south. and wrap up his poor sub planning he had.

  59. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:30 pm

    Iosia starting Set 3

  60. Ki August 27, 2016 8:30 pm

    55. Kendra’s attacks weren’t successful towards the end so Dave wanted to put a different hitter in hoping for a kill. Didn’t happen.

  61. Hot August 27, 2016 8:31 pm

Wow. Iosia with 5 aces already and she only started playing near the end of Set 2.

  62. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 8:32 pm

Love Iosia’s game and would make her the starter.
Still hope Dave uses Higgins as the serving sub though.

  63. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 8:33 pm

iosia will put Kaufmans 11 ace record in jeopardy.

  64. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:35 pm

    58. not understanding this issue. they won Set 1 with Higgins.
they’re trying different things to see what works. sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. Yes, Iosia has been splashy hasn’t been perfect.

  65. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 8:35 pm

    Blocking has been poor tonight.

  66. z August 27, 2016 8:36 pm

We giving away free points tonight.

  67. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:37 pm

State up 10-6 when smith and greeley can’t figure out who goes for the serve. Smith and Kahakai were called for out of rotation point before.

  68. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:38 pm

    65. KSU setter is pretty deceptive.
    UH leads in blocks 6-5

  69. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:40 pm

UH closes to 10-9. TO KSU. Ionia’s last set to Granato was quick and KSU block couldn’t close

  70. Hot August 27, 2016 8:42 pm

Granato working her way out of a sub .200 hitting percentage.

  71. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 8:43 pm

Mags and smith some fabulous digs, this is the Mckenna I expected.

  72. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:48 pm

ace by Smith. UH up 17-15. TO KSU

  73. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:54 pm

UH had tied at 20. KSU up 22-20. TO UH

  74. Hot August 27, 2016 8:55 pm

If only Granato were actually six feet tall.

  75. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 8:58 pm

    Wildcats win 25-22.

  76. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 9:01 pm

    64. issue is wahine in trouble unless they take it all the way past 5.

  77. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 9:04 pm

    KSU up 4-1. TO UH

  78. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 9:05 pm

Defense has been poor the past two sets, block cant slow them down at all and not getting any digs.
Would like to see Sibley get a chance to hit.

  79. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 9:05 pm

    76. your issue was with Iosia not playing. She is. they lost Set 3 with her

  80. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 9:13 pm

this is ugly. KSU up 13-8. TO UH

  81. z August 27, 2016 9:13 pm

Their blockers are just sitting on our hitters. No surprise.

  82. Hot August 27, 2016 9:14 pm

This must be so frustrating for Granato. Three consecutive errors.

  83. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 9:17 pm

Letting balls drop, that’s like two now this set alone. wahine look sloppy 🙁

  84. Hot August 27, 2016 9:21 pm

Every single ball going to Granato.

  85. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 9:23 pm

UH closes to 18-14. TO KSU

  86. z August 27, 2016 9:24 pm

Reininger has been dinking the ball to the same spot.

  87. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 9:25 pm

    79. my issue is iosia not playing. my issue is shoji with his subbing/rotation disorganization and wahine in peril.

  88. m August 27, 2016 9:28 pm

Not your typical Shoji team. Girls don’t appear focused. Too many mental errors. Coaching staff minus Shoji didn’t prepare the girls to win in this tournament.

  89. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 9:30 pm

    UH loses 25-20

  90. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 9:33 pm

Ksu is a pretty good team with a very nice setter but wahine back row and block was just disappointing.
thought it was a mistake to not have sibley hit more.

    I’d still start Iosia.

  91. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 9:33 pm

    isnt that ridiculous.

  92. Ashley August 27, 2016 9:35 pm

when is the last time Hawaii started
    0-2?

  93. jmy August 27, 2016 9:35 pm

Disappointing result, though not entirely unexpected…too bad UH is starting this season the same way they ended last season: injury-plagued…

  94. H-Man August 27, 2016 9:37 pm

K-State – Happy Feet. Wahine – Heavy Feet.

  95. z August 27, 2016 9:37 pm

They had a better defense. I miss Nikki’s back row attack. It’ll be a different team when the terminator returns.

  96. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 9:37 pm

    87. correction. i had my words switched around. my issue was NOT iosia not playing.

  97. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 9:37 pm

2005 they starter 0-2 , not worried about these losses
Ksu will give wisconsin fits too

It would have been nice to host sub regionals but knew that was out of the picture when Nikki got hurt. think hawaii will be good by post season.

  98. z August 27, 2016 9:40 pm

They had a really good setter. Our block could not get up fast enough.

  99. Ashley August 27, 2016 9:43 pm

this match looked worse than the Wisconsin match TBH. too much patty cake, and letting balls fall ridiculously. Maglio doesn’t seem to be hitting as hard as she did last season, sad that Kalei isn’t at full strength. this team has potential don’t get me wrong, but they look completely lost and floored without Nikki out there to rescue them time and time again.

  100. jmy August 27, 2016 9:48 pm

    99. Totally agree with you…to be fair, any team would struggle without their go-to player…last year Arizona State looked all-world…then their top hitter went down and their season went with her…I think that Hawaii’s best days are ahead of them…

  101. Big Island VB fan August 27, 2016 9:49 pm

So what will it be like next year when both Nikki Taylor and Annie Mitchem graduated? The team will be thoroughly depleted. Shoji will probably retire at the end of this year and save himself more headache and heartache.

  102. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 9:53 pm

    99. this was incredibly worse than wisconsin match. wahine no longer undefeated against a team that they should be and were beaten by a volleyball team that despite being big12 doesnt really comparably exist on the map. balls were dropping and makes you wonder they did not get that. like a waste of previous efforts.

  103. z August 27, 2016 9:55 pm

They beat us in every category except for service aces.

  104. Maverick August 27, 2016 9:57 pm

    101. It will look a little better than what you are seeing right now.

  105. warriorwahine August 27, 2016 10:01 pm

    103. yes even the blocking was missing. and while service errors were accosting kansas st, the latter sets it was also accosting na wahine.

  106. Ashley August 27, 2016 10:01 pm

isn’t it ironic how last night the only set we won, Norene was setting. & tonight the only set we won Tayler was setting. lol, just realized that. i won’t throw in the towel just yet, but Hawaii really needs to pull it together before it gets any worse

  107. kamaaina3261 August 27, 2016 10:02 pm

In the post-game interviews, S. Kahakai mentioned that one area the team could improve upon was their ‘spirit.’

Through set 4, the wahines looked flat and lacked intensity – certainly a complete turnaround from the previous night’s match with Wisconsin. I hope N. Taylor’s (possible) return next week will give them a well needed terminator, and inject the intensity they had in the final 2 sets against the Lady Badgers.

  108. Warriorfan August 27, 2016 10:16 pm

Hosting was out of the picture so why so mad about the loss? Ksu looked good no surprise they swept arizona would not shock me if they beat wisconsin tomorrow too.

I think the wahine will get very far if Nikki and Annie come back 100 percent and once Iosia gets more match experience, we need our backrow to improve though kahakai, greeley granato and the ds of the moment need to get it together.

  109. Cindy Luis August 27, 2016 10:30 pm

The bottom line is they don’t have a lot of options on offense. They have no back-row attack. They need Greeley on the court but she’s about 80 percent. Burns has a hard time hitting behind the setter.
    Will see what happens tomorrow
BTW, 05 they went 0-2 in Omaha. 76 they opened 0-2 against UCLA matches played at Blaisdell and War Memorial to technically this is the first time they’ve been 0-2 at home. Ever.
