Averill POW, Hawaii up to 7 in poll

From the MPSF
Senior middle blocker Taylor Averill was named men’s volleyball’s Mountain Pacific Sports Federation/Molten Player of the Week (Jan. 19-25). It is Averill’s second weekly conference award this season.

The San Jose, Calif. native played a big role, along with his teammates, in netting two consecutive victories last weekend over UC Santa Barbara (Jan. 16 & 18), ending a seven-match losing streak to the Gauchos. The Rainbow Warriors improved to a 5-1 record, opening MPSF-play 2-0.

Averill accumulated a .513 middle attack (25-5-39) for the two-game series, while adding 10 blocks (2 solo), four digs, and one service ace.

The Warriors will take one week off before flying out for their road-opening series against No. 3 UC Irvine, Jan. 28 and Jan. 30 for another MPSF match-up.

As for the Poll:

Loyola stays at 1. Lewis up 5 to 2. then UCI, BYU, sc, Pepperdine,
and then Hawaii

Yes, agree that Lewis moving up to 2 is surprising. They beat Carthage and Harvard. seriously.

A family member asked me recently how often balls are replaced in the men’s game. I didn’t have an answer, but I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that a new ball was needed after Sunshine scored UH’s 16th point in S2 of Friday’s match!!

    Well-deserved recognition, Taylor!

    Congrats to Averill.

Big weekend for the Warriors. The Sunday win was all the more impressive because of how everyone contributed … 5 hitters with double digit kills. Nicely done.

Averill would likely credit Kanetake’s, Pono’s, and Siki’s passing and Jenning’s setting for this weekend’s hitting success.

Did Averill get recognized for not only the conference PoW but also for the D1-D2 PoW? The MPSF/UH press release makes no mention of the AVCA award.
