Unclear how good UCSB is as they haven’t beaten any top teams yet and they have played quite a few weak teams. So player stats will be inflated. Lost to San Diego, UNLV, Pittsburgh and SDSU, three of those in sweeps. If UH plays as they did this weekend, it should be a sweep or win in four.

  2. MeKanaka September 19, 2016 9:27 am

Will there be any TV/radio coverage for the weekend matches between UCSB and Cal Poly? Checked Bigwest TV for streaming schedule but no indication that this will be available.

  3. Maverick September 19, 2016 9:29 am

On comparisons to BW’s 2013 3-bid season, just remember that the worst RPI team won the auto-bid (UCSB at 60), and that BW had a winning non-conference record. Both helped get three teams in, including a 41st-RPI ranked Northridge. BW is below .500 in non-conference matches this year, and that will hurt every BW team this year. The teams best positioned to weather this are UH and LBSU, who have top 10 SOS rankings.

  4. Maverick September 19, 2016 9:32 am

In 2013, BW was 14 games above .500 non-conference (as of the end of the regular season). This year, two games below .500.

What really intrigued me watching Annie at OH this weekend was how high her contact point is on some of her swings. She’s not just tall, she jumps really high and then extends. Like trying to block a Tim Duncan jump hook. Even if she moves back to MB, she might be an option to move outside on those nights when a big block is shutting down our left side.

  6. setaone September 19, 2016 1:05 pm

Annie did awesome on the left. For some reason, I thought she had played some OH at IVC.

There is almost no way she gets that many swings in the middle. It appears that the combo of Mitchem at OH and Castillo/Burns at MH is better than Sibley at OH and Mitchem at MH, as of now.

    Congrats Nikki on another award!

#6 There are videos of Mitchem hitting from OH at Irvine. While Annie is listed at the MH positions, she switches between MH and OH depending on the situation. When serving, she lines up at MH. When receiving, she lines up at OH. It looks like if the initial OH attack was not successful, she may then slide back to MH position. I am not sure how it totally works. Pestolesi may have already suggested this to Dave?

    From the Big West
Nikki Taylor joined UC Davis teammates Heather Reed and Lauren Matias as recipients of the women’s volleyball weekly honors.
Hawai‘i senior Nikki Taylor (Honolulu, Hawai‘i/Kaiser HS) collected Big West Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week accolades with solid all-around efforts in back-to-back victories over Pepperdine.
A 6-4 opposite, Taylor dazzled to the tune of 3.86 kills, 2.71 digs, 0.86 blocks and 1.57 service aces per set as the Rainbow Wahine downed the Waves on consecutive nights.
Taylor had 13 kills and 11 digs in UH’s three-set win in the first match. She recorded her third double-double of the season. In addition, she notched a career-high seven service aces, including four straight to start the second set to help her team to an 8-0 lead. She swung at a .276 clip (13-5-29) for the match.
In a four-set triumph the next night, Taylor turned in 14 kills, eight digs and five blocks. She added four more service aces and committed only five attack errors for the second straight match.
Taylor, who put up 20.5 points per match, moved up to No. 16 on UH’s career kill list with her team-high 27 for the two contests. She currently has 1,137 kills with a team-high 146 of those coming this season. She is also the conference leader with 25 service aces.

Hawaii nominated Maglio for Defensive POW and Iosia as Freshman of Week

Believe Coach should keep on playing whoevers doing better that night between Castillo and Burns. Natasha Burns upside is huge. She needs to play to become the force that she is capable of becoming.

  12. islandman September 19, 2016 3:30 pm

Good to have impact players from Kaiser and Farrington, besides Punahou.

  13. Cindy Luis September 19, 2016 3:41 pm

    12. have never understood the anti-Punahou thing. The Wahine have had plenty of impact players in their 40-year -plus history not a Buffanblu.

  14. Ron September 19, 2016 3:41 pm

I think Dave is being very open-minded on where to play Annie. Several factors that need to be considered are ; the return of Sibley and if she can step it up , the eventual return of Greeley, the develpment of Castillo and/ or Burns , and can Granato keep improving. Tough choices. Greeley looked really good last game as did Granato. Somewhat unsung , but Savannah ,Emily and Noreen really played top level volleyball.

  15. islandman September 19, 2016 4:56 pm

I vote for Burns to play more.
    13. Lily, Kanani- Kamehameha Schools, Robyn – Hail McKinley. For recent times, have we had an impact outside hitter or opposite from Hawaii like Nikki or Kanani ?
    Tai ?

  16. Brandon September 19, 2016 6:38 pm

First people want Castillo to play, then burns, then Castillo. It’s getting confusing lol.

Both are fine players, both are fine at the m2 position.

  17. H-Man September 19, 2016 6:52 pm

The Wahine looked good against Pepperdine. Annie looked good at outside. Go Wahine !!!

  18. darkfire35 September 19, 2016 8:06 pm

I agree with most everyone. Annie should stay on the outside. She has proven to be another “terminator” to be respected. This will help to open the middle up, then later provide single blockers to the pins. Annie has proven to be more powerful particularly with a reach of 10’6″…nuff said.
How yummy is it to have 4 jump servers that can blast the ball!!!
Congratulations Nikki! Iosia shoulda got Freshman of the week and Maglio defensive player of the week! Go Bows!

  19. kahuna September 19, 2016 8:20 pm

I like what Annie has given us at OH but I do think having a second dominant middle blocker will help out our pin hitters. Look at the combo of Magill/Maglio gave us last season.

With Michem and Maglio in the middle….we will have six rotations of potent offense available. We won’t get stuck in many bad rotations with these two middles. Mckenna….Nikki…and Kirsten will have a lot of one on ones with the M and M duo.

Whatever Dave chooses is fine wih me. I just think Annie at middle give the opponents a more difficult time.

  20. haleiwacrossfitter September 19, 2016 8:31 pm

Mav, you’re right regarding the unknown of ucsb this year due to the lack of top teams they played. But when you have a team with players like Ruddins, Rice, Juley, Grunt and Hoffman….they could provide a problem. Especially on the road. I hope the girls are ready for a potential battle. I’m sure they will, but if all of the Gauchos pieces are put together, it won’t come easy.

I’ve been nervous of this gaucho team since the day Ruddins committed.

  21. Andrew September 19, 2016 8:51 pm

Like others, I think Mitchem should remain on the outside. She has proven that she can be that other terminator on the outside that this offense has been needing. While she would also be effective in her natural position in the middle, I think she would be even more effective remaining on the outside considering the middles are normally set when the passing is on point and that of course doesn’t always happen. Moreover, her ability of high contact will help in combating high blocks which they will see especially in post season.

  22. warriorwahine September 19, 2016 10:57 pm

    from previous thread
    2. on Ponce and people ‘cringing’ when she went in
yes ponce set up nikki and aced for set point in set 2 when it was an overwhelming 24-6. so not like that would of mattered had she hit the net instead.
nice job cherry picking her success when it wouldnt of been terribly important (doesnt mean she didnt do a good job and she gets mad points for the assist and ace.)
also didnt say someone left the arena was because ponce served it into the net. i observed several leave after set 3 and yes it was likely because they only planned a sweep win and needed to go elsewhere.

    3. who said about greeley in the front row? let alone shes injured and still recovering and i wouldnt put her in the back row if the heat dials up especially later in the set/redzone

    5. smith ‘shanked’ (supposedly) one ball. and it wasnt like it bolted off the court (went out of control that nobody could of gotten the ball.)

  23. warriorwahine September 19, 2016 11:07 pm

    9. noreen has been nominated frosh of the week since the getgo! thats 4 times! she needs to be awarded somehow….

    13. cindy whats the story on that? people hating on the buffanblu? upset like shoji is partial towards punahou?

  24. Mike Maxwell September 20, 2016 2:00 am

I watched that 2nd Pepp game on YouTube – I thought Natasha changed the momentum to UH when they put her in, in sets 1&2, & gave them the lead in set 3 with 3kills in a row & then a bump set for a point, & Pepp only came back when they took her out! Thought she looks quicker than she did at the beginning of the season!! Go Bows! (Reporting from Orlando!!)

  25. tongo September 20, 2016 5:00 am

#20 I follow the Gauchos weekly and when all the pieces are firing, this is a lethal team. They are very driven right now to make a statement. When they get a jump on the Gauchos, the team cannot let up.

  26. connor September 20, 2016 5:56 am

I think that Mitchell on the LS is a question of math. do you want her to get 20-25 swings on the outside or 10 swings in the middle? to me it is clearly the 20-25 swings. Burns and Castillo can develop and our whole team will be stronger.

  27. connor September 20, 2016 5:56 am

    typo. i obviously meant mitchem

  28. Rabbit ears September 20, 2016 6:06 am

26- I agree. Same problem with Maglio. She needs more swings .

  29. Ron September 20, 2016 6:56 am

Good point about the difference of attack chances comparing the two positions. This sounds like a job for Maverick! I also like to see the development of Burns. Her footwork reminds me of a new born fawn but she will out grow this.

  30. islandman September 20, 2016 8:29 am

I like that name, Phoebe Grunt.
    23. Not against Punahou. Just happy that a public school such as Kaiser can have a graduate such as Nikki. Shows you don’t have to go to a private school with all their advantages to be an impact or good player. Also, like Kahakai and Robyn.

  31. Warriorfan September 20, 2016 9:19 am

    28. maglio is a near .400 hitting middle but I think she can be a newr .300 hitting pin hitter (which is really good)
UH would have the biggest and best pin trio in the country IMO with mitchem, taylor and Maglio.

  32. Andrew September 20, 2016 10:12 am

    31.

Maglio is too much of a force in the middle. I think she is much more valuable there than she would be on the outside. The fact that she is such a force, makes opposing teams key on her which in result opens the outside

  33. Ron September 20, 2016 10:24 am

WF, Maglio won’t be moving until next year, Castillo and Burns are not at the point where they could be effective enough on their own as the middles. Our “pin hitters”; Nikki, McKenna, Kirstin, Annie, and eventually Kalei, are pretty good. We also have a couple of recruits coming in next year who could help.

  34. Big G September 20, 2016 11:13 am

    30. Don’t forget Nikki didn’t play at Kaiser her senior year.

Anyone know the reason why Nikki didn’t play senior year?

  35. Hapaguy September 20, 2016 12:19 pm

My 2 cents worth on Castillo in the middle: she looks lost in there sometimes on defense but also she stands at the net too much. She needs to get off the net in transition and get ready to hit. One less option for Norene to set when Castillo does that and also the opposing team doesn’t need to try to defend her if she’s standing at the net not ready to hit….Dave should keep Mitchem on the left and play the Castillo/Burns combo whoever is playing better that night…

  36. tako September 20, 2016 12:43 pm

Love Noreen’s vision and fast decision making skills, in most cases she betters the ball. Believe she keeps the defense guessing, however, with a bit more distribution; their offense “can be” awesome. IMO think Berg is mentoring her to be more effective on her sets.

Annie adds one more dangerous weapon that will keep defenses honest. Also think with a little more confidence Emily can dominate. Casey and Sunshine do an okay job as the other MH, however, Emily, I believe is the key middle that has to shine every game if we are to make the final four.

The second part of the season begins…waiting to see.. -go Wahine

  37. Ron September 20, 2016 12:45 pm

I just wanted to add that the Nikki/Annie tandem reminds me of the deadly Kim and Lily tandem. I think the present supporting cast is a little better but it is hard to judge since so many years have passed.

  38. Rabbit ears September 20, 2016 1:28 pm

Like coach said, Maglio needs to be the first option. Norene sets the pins too often when the middle is wide open.

  39. hollycow September 20, 2016 1:29 pm

Looking ahead to next year, we have 4 players coming in. Two middles, Sophia Howling and Skyler Williams, a opp/middle Shaney Lipscomb and Janelle Gong a ds/oh.

  40. z September 20, 2016 2:10 pm

I think our passing will determine where Annie goes. If we don’t pass correctly it will be difficult to set up our middle attack. I think Annie appears to be effective at both positions so moving her around to help the team would be the way to go. I haven’t counted out our lefts. I like the way McKenna is playing. Dave appears to like Kirstin and I do too. She just needs more PT. I am a Kalei fan. I enjoy watching her in the back row and can’t wait until she is 100%.
