Hawaii 3, UCSB 1

Reminder no TV
There is radio at 1420-AM or espn1420am.com

>> Had a nice chat with UCSB coach Rick McLaughlin, his brother is Jim, former UW coach who took the job at Notre Dame.
He said the timing was right and Jim has always loved Notre Dame, family very catholic. Sounds like his wife is from around that area and his grandkids live there. Rick said it was a good fit, although it was a very hard decision for his brother to make.

For those of you who haven’t been in the arena, they have 2 end line boards to show speed of serves & kills. Former Warrior Jarrod Lofy, who is a tech genius, is in charge of the setup. Hawaii is the first team doing this in volleyball.
First photo is Lofy on band side. Second is in the other end zone taken during warmups.

No change for Hawaii: Kanetake, Averill, Sedore, Fey, Franciskovic, Holt, Zarkovic.

  2. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:10 pm

Hawaii out early 4-0, courtesy of Sedore’s serving. it’s 6=1, UCSB’s only point on Sedore SE.

  3. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:18 pm

After leading by as much as 9-4, UH caught by UCSB at 10 and 11. UH now up 13-11.

  4. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:20 pm

UH up 15-13 at the TTO.

  5. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:29 pm

UH led 20-19. UCSB now up 23-22. TO UH. UH block a little late in closing on a couple of shots.

  6. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:31 pm

UH block lands just wide. UCSB with set point at 24-22. TO UH first.

  7. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:33 pm

    UCSB wins it 25-22.

  8. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:51 pm

UCSB up 15-12 at the TTO. A very poor call by the up ref.
The set went to the middle but Holt mistimed it, didn’t touch it, Sedore put the ball down but the ref called 4 contacts. Don’t think so.

  9. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:55 pm

UCSB still up by 3 17-14. TO UH. Warriors had closed to 15-14 on a solo stuff by Holt but had a service error by Zarkovic and a kill by Delson to put the margin back to 3.

  10. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 5:59 pm

Up ref clearly not having a good night. UCSB attack did not clear the net. the Warriors all had their hands up saying no touch but ref let the play go on. UCSB won the point.
anyway, Warriors were down 20-18. have come back to tie 20-20, last on a monster slam back of an overpass by Zarkovic. TO UCSB

  11. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:04 pm

Holt with another solo stuff. his third block. UH serving for set 2 at 24-22. TO UCSB

  12. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:06 pm

Gauchos with the point. 24-23. TO UH.

  13. Don January 18, 2015 6:07 pm

Where’s Video review when we need it…R1 is really bad after having a good night on Friday…

  14. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:08 pm

Timout worked. UCSB serves long. UH wins 25-23

  15. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:13 pm

    13. well that would also require TV. But I think everyone sees the value of the video challenge. We may not see it again until next season.
Shoji likes it but said he’d like more cameras and better angles. He saw it during World League play watching his sons. But would not be surprised if UH women use it for their tournaments. All coaches have to agree.

  16. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:15 pm

Hawaii pretty balanced. Sedore 7, Averill 4, Zarkovic 8, Fey 5, Holt 6.
UCSB leads in blocks 7.5. UH no aces, 5 SEs. UCSB 2 aces, 5 SEs.
Hawaii 22=21 edge in digs, Zarkovic with 7, Kanetake 6, Fey 5.

  17. HawaiiMongoose January 18, 2015 6:21 pm

Thank you Cindy for the updates!

  18. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:24 pm

Would say up ref is 0-for-4 tonight. Fey on the pipe called in by the linesman, over ruled by the up ref.
UH would have been up 4-2
    It’s now 6-5 UH.
Actually probably more missed calls than the 4 that went against UH.
He’s very generous on the sets. could have been a number of lifts on UCSB and a throw not called.
    UH up 10-6. TO UCSB

  19. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:28 pm

UH hitting .300 in Set 3, UCSB negative .091.

  20. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:31 pm

Fey has just tied his career high with his 7th kill. and now has a career high with 8. UH up 13-10

  21. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:32 pm

Averill with his 5th kill. it’s 15-11 at the TTO.
last few UCSB points have come on UH SEs. 3 so far this set.
Zarkovic showed how smart of a player he is. He hesitated when going up against a triple block and placed his angle shot deep right corner. that was for his 10th kill.

  22. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:38 pm

Kill by Vaun good for UCSB but not sure what he did. not putting weight on his left leg. may have hit the standard or landed wrong. UH up 18-14. ucsb with the serve.

  23. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:39 pm

Another kill by Fey, an angle shot ruled good by linesman, over ruled by up ref. instead of 19-14. it’s 18-15

  24. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:41 pm

Funny. Leung’s ace landed right about where Fey’s kill did. Ref did not over rule this call. UH up 20-16.

  25. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:44 pm

Franciskovic with the service overpass, gives UH set point 24-18. UH called for a net then Holt ends it with his ninth kill. 25-19.

  26. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:49 pm

UH with 4 SEs that set or it likely wouldn’t have been that close. Warriors outblocked the Gauchos 2-1. Zarkovic with 11 kills, Sedore 10, Holt 9, Fey 8, Averill 6-1-11.
Kanetake with 9 digs, 3 in Set 3.
Donohue with 12 kills for UCSB,

  27. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 6:53 pm

Have never seen a ball that spins like a globe that wasn’t called. Ref is very generous. it’s 4-4

  28. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:01 pm

UH up 13-10. Zarkovic with 14 kills, Sedore and Fey 12. Averill and Holt 9. Kanetake has played amazing defense.

  29. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:03 pm

UH up 15-10 at the TTO. couple of great digs on both sides. Zarkovic over on 2 off a dig by Franciskovic. Zarkovic with 11 digs, Kanetake 10.

  30. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:06 pm

UH almost lost another monitor when UCSB player went over the table trying to s save what ended up being an ace by Zarkovic. Kill by Sedore makes it 18-11. TO UCSB

  31. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:10 pm

Zarkovic has served four straight. It’s 20-11. TO UCSB

  32. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:16 pm

Not good. Zarkovic and Averill collided when going for a block. but he appears OK
Jones in to set. it’s 23-18

  33. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:31 pm

    sorry. UH wins it 25-19.
All five Warriors in double figure kills. It’s believed to be the first time in program history.
Zarkovic with 17, Fey 14, Sedore 13, Averill and Holt 10.
    Zarkovic 15 digs, Kanetake 11.
UH is tied with BYU at 2-0 in the MPSF.

  34. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 7:40 pm

really good win for the Warriors who don’t play again until going on the road at UC Irvine Jan. 28 & 30. Very balanced attack.

  35. HawaiiMongoose January 18, 2015 7:51 pm

Great way to start the MPSF season. Charlie has the team playing very well.

  36. Big Island VB fan January 18, 2015 8:02 pm

So Davis Holt ends the match again with a kill. Maybe he should be nicknamed “Thunderholt.” I wonder what the banners about him show when he gets a kill or solo block.

  37. auntyz January 18, 2015 8:03 pm

4 wins against three 3rd ranked teams in three weeks – wonder who will be ranked 3 tomorrow?

  38. Don January 18, 2015 8:09 pm

If Averill or Sedore don’t get MPSF PoW or AVCA PoW or both, there is something seriously wrong with men’s volleyball. Both were consistent over 2 nights against a top tier team.

  39. warriorfan January 18, 2015 8:24 pm

Averill will probably have a better shot at it then Sedore. However USC and BYU had big weekends as well, Micah at USC might get player of the week. USC had a big upset of Pepperdine and Micah had a great match including the winning ace.

  40. Ron January 18, 2015 8:31 pm

Listening to the game on radio I am so impressed with how much it felt like I was there. Tiff goes a great job and I am looking forward to when he replaces the “legend” that does TV. I don’t mean JM. he is ok, just too nice for my taste.

  41. warriorfan January 18, 2015 8:46 pm

    37. I expect the rankings to be 1. Loyola 2. USC. 3. UC irvine or BYU

Would be interesting if its UC Irvine since that’s UH’s next opponent.

  42. Brandon January 18, 2015 9:41 pm

Cindy did owens play or was that an error on the stats. I thought he was redshirting

  43. rayson January 18, 2015 9:58 pm

    42. That’s an error. Owens IS redshirting.

  44. rayson January 18, 2015 10:04 pm

These two teams are very evenly matched I’m glad the Warriors pulled out the double win.

That crash between Averill and Siki was a little scary especially after seeing that LBSU player go down in the 3rd set.

  45. Cindy Luis January 18, 2015 11:32 pm

    37. Think it will be Loyola, USC, BYU, Pepperdine, UCI. Hawaii could move up to 6,
depends on how many coaches looked at Sunday’s ‘late’ result.

    38. as for MPSF honors., I’m sure they’ll look at BYU’s two wins over UCLA for a player. And it depends on who UH nominates and how it’s written up. Case could also be made for Zarkovic. Don’t think it should go to USC since they only played once. BYU and Hawaii had two big wins.

    40. Thanks Ron. I’m a little biased but I think he does a good job. He did TV and radio as an undergrad at Pepperdine. He’s turned down TV here because he enjoys doing radio more. But would not be surprised if he goes over to that side eventually.

    42. Owens is redshirting.

    44. it was a scary crash. Zarkovic not too crazy that Averill landed on him.
Never did hear how the UCSB player Lennon was afterwards. He wasn’t putting any weight on the leg as they carried him off.

  46. islandman January 19, 2015 12:49 pm

    45.– UH ranked 7th now. Lewis is 2nd .

    http://www.avca.org/divisions/men/1-2-poll-1-19-15/

  47. warriorfan January 19, 2015 4:25 pm

I have a real problem with Lewis being number 2, especially since they lost to BYU and beat UCI without their best player.

  48. Cindy Luis January 19, 2015 4:38 pm

    47. Lewis had a big win early over UCI. kind of surprised they’d move up so much. from 5 to 2. wins over Harvard and Carthage??
It’s 18 coaches voting. the votes and points go where they land.
