Hall on ‘administrative leave’ for 2 matches

Don’t know the whole story other than Jeff Hall has been put on administrative leave for two matches this weekend.
The AD won’t comment because it is a personnel matter but in a release by UH, Maitlin said “Hall is taking full responsibility for this situation. … I consider this matter closed and therefore have no further comment.’

Shoji declined to comment

I honestly don’t have any idea what happened other than was told it has nothing to do with the Huff situation.

wow – this is a surprise… hope everything is ok @ the WVB ohana!

  2. islandman September 17, 2015 4:25 pm

    Thanks for the updates.

  3. Aloha73g September 17, 2015 4:28 pm

What doesn’t kill them will make them stronger!! The team will learn, grow and rise above all this. Early season adversity = gritty post season team.

  4. kahuna September 17, 2015 4:31 pm

2 games is a pretty severe punishment. Got to be something bad to warrant being place on leave. Hope the dude didn’t confront another coach in anger.

Nothing to do with Huff? What else can it be? If the school is not going to make it clear to what Hall’s sin was then it will open up speculation.

  5. cocobean September 17, 2015 4:31 pm

Inquiring minds will want to know….
Just hope the speculation doesn’t gt too out of hand.

  6. bleachercoach September 17, 2015 4:34 pm

#32…yep you are watching the same game I am…

  7. H-Man September 17, 2015 4:39 pm

Now what? I think it must somehow be linked, even if just a little bit, to Huff laving Wahine volleyball. Oh well, just hope the Wahine VB can keep the magic going with these sideshow distractions.

  8. warriorfan September 17, 2015 4:44 pm

I don’t know what’s going on but just glad the opponent isn’t too hard this week it’s been a eventful week so far.

Hope the wahine focus, need to finish undefeated so the last home game isn’t Nov 1st. A lot of pressure but they can do it.

  9. Tempmanoa September 17, 2015 4:49 pm

Cindy was told it had nothing to do with the Huff situation (I assume by someone who would know).

Assume that Cindy was not told of the non-connection. Then just speculating, what could possibly be the connection that would lead to a two game suspension?

  10. bleachercoach September 17, 2015 4:51 pm

Sometimes I guess having too much talent can pose more problems…I know we cannot please everybody….Hallelujah it’s just a game!!

  11. kahuna September 17, 2015 4:57 pm

LOL…..Hate Dave Shoji? I have been a season ticket holder for WVB since the SSC open. I don’t hate the man ……at the same time I don’t worship him like some of you. I will applaud him if I think he did a good job and will criticize if I think he did a lousy job so stop with the “hate” thing.Being critical of someone does not mean hate you know.

I thought he did a lousy job in giving Huff PT. I never called Dave names or stuff so you need to back off calling opposition point of view haters.

  12. tongo September 17, 2015 5:00 pm

Interesting, so I am guessing that those who have a real need to speculate will now unleash their vast potential to create. Let’s leave the administrative tasks to the administrators – since we don’t have any other FACTS.

  13. kimo browner September 17, 2015 5:01 pm

    bad news comes in threes

  14. tongo September 17, 2015 5:07 pm

#4 Maybe legally, they cannot. I know that in our HS district in So. CA, the public unions are so strong that nothing can be said. Free country, you can say what you want about it but what is the point.

  15. warriorfan September 17, 2015 5:20 pm

Just saw BYU sweep Utah, Adora Anae is the only reason Utah was even close, she does it all for Utah. Man I wish she stayed home.

  16. wow September 17, 2015 5:59 pm

#4, This is an employee/employer personnel issue. UH can’t release the info unless Hall approves the release of the information.

  17. volley September 17, 2015 6:07 pm

lets not make this thread tldr folks.

huff has puffed and gone to wahine bb. you guys can blame anyone you want (ill blame it on the knave who knows too much influencing and bachis it up while claiming innocence in ‘speculating’) but bottom line is megan said so, and its the way of it.

hall takes the fall and heres your ‘speculation’: he was undesirable (before dave hired him) in the first place.

  18. Tipshot September 17, 2015 6:09 pm

    @15

If she had stayed home, the posters here and on VT would be putting her down every time she had one bad game or even one shanked pass. I am always appalled at how these so-called fans build these players up only to them turn on them quickly and viciously if they have some bad games. She probably would have transferred to Utah just to not deal with craziness.

It’s a wonder Shoji gets any recruits from the mainland. They must not read VT and see the Hawaii fans are the worst ones on there as far as constantly putting down their own team, coach and program.

  19. Hapaguy September 17, 2015 6:13 pm

    11. Well said Kahuna….

  20. Tipshot September 17, 2015 6:16 pm

Just wanted to add that fortunately these posters don’t represent true fans who support the team through thick and thin and are the vast majority. Unfortunately, these few posters dominate the blogs and are nothing but negative. Notice they don’t attend the matches but just sit a computer dissecting every play and putting down anything that is not perfect and demanding one of the most winning-est coaches in volleyball immediately retire.

  21. kahuna September 17, 2015 6:18 pm

Employee/employer personnel matter sounds like Hall did something outside of the volleyball program that Matlin himself needed to get involved. If the matter was internal Dave could have handled it.

I will stick by hunch that it had something to do with Huff even if a report said it wasn’t. Hall called Beeman….Beeman called Matlin…Matlin took action. Only Dave Matlin have power to put his coaches on leave. The fact that it want up Matlin indicated to me that someone outside the vball program is involved.

  22. warriorfan September 17, 2015 6:27 pm

    20. I don’t know what you are reading but I haven’t seen anything too bad on this blog.Maybe a few that blame Shoji for Huff leaving and playing favorites with TMO and Higgins, more so on volleytalk,But every fan base has a few bad apples , and every fan base has overcritical fans, like Florida, Stanford etc.

I think you need thicker skin, not everyone will be full of kool aid all the time and praise everything and not question anything the coach does. I happen to think Hawaii fans are great , and at least the volleyball team has fans, unlike Utah!

  23. bleachercoach September 17, 2015 6:27 pm

That is why our world is evil! I remember when we didn’t have Smart Phones and Internet, etc…Life was good and the Wahines were even better!!! Just saying….

  24. bleachercoach September 17, 2015 6:29 pm

You know what can settle everybody down?
A 2015 Womens National Volleyball Champions Banner!!! (lol)

  25. warriorfan September 17, 2015 6:30 pm

    20. Some posters can’t attend the matches, some people work evenings, some are not even on the island, etc. You are being really thin skinned, and need to be able to take critical comments with a grain of salt. Agree to disagree with some.

  26. Tipshot September 17, 2015 6:38 pm

    @22

Ha. Thanks but I don’t need thicker skin. I’m not the one being put down constantly so water off my back.
Sure, all fan bases have bad apples. But you are mistaken if you think the posting on VT is similar to that of other teams or that it doesn’t reflect badly on the fanbase. No way do other posters bash their own programs like the Hawaii “fans” do. It’s just unfortunate that the few handful of regulars there are the most crazy ones. It’s a symptom of Hawaii having more fans but these posters are not really “fans.” And any objective person reading especially VT would come away thinking these people can be so crude and crazy.

    Anyway, carry on…

  27. warriorfan September 17, 2015 6:42 pm

    26. I think you do honestly, your’e the one that seems to think recruits and their families will generalize an entire fan base from a few crazies on an online forum, and I’d like to point out that the two crazies that have been banned on this blog are on volleytalk and post daily. Steve/laura and the person with a million screen names and that writes nothing but gibberish.

  28. tongo September 17, 2015 6:44 pm

#15 I know, if only Adora stayed – we could have a Tai vs. Adora issue instead! Just kidding! She would have been a great get but she didn’t want to stay home. However, I am very happy with our freshmen class and Annie. These girls are solid with plenty of upside! Still wonder if Natasha reshirts or not with Huff gone.

Hey, it is mid-week, and we have nothing to do but slight each other. Shall we make up some outrageous story like the associated head coach getting suspended – who would believe it?

  29. Tipshot September 17, 2015 6:44 pm

    @25

It’s not a matter of me agreeing to disagree. I’m not arguing with the crazy at all. I’m just stating an observation.

As a small aside, I doubt these posters are working during the games since they are at their computers diligently dissecting every play. Although I’m sure some may be other islands and can’t attend.

Anyway, take my posts with a grain of salt. As I stated, it’s just an unfortunate yet astute observation as to the perception of Hawaii “fans” based on here but, moreso, VT.

  30. Tipshot September 17, 2015 6:47 pm

Lol. Thanks for the laugh, Tongo. I agree with your whole post!

  31. kahuna September 17, 2015 6:55 pm

UH should be grateful we at least have fans. Other schools don’t even have fans outside of families and friends.

We fans are passionate about our team and that is why we take the time to put in our two cents. If we didn’t care about the team we wouldn’t take time to comment and would let the team do “whatever “.

How many of you comment on stuff you don’t care about? I know I don’t.

  32. kimo browner September 17, 2015 6:59 pm

Here is something for you Dave Shoji minions, “Do you worship Rome or Caesar?”
Look, most critics, speak bc they see something that is not pono. It does not mean they hate the coach. That is furthest from the truth. But for you apologists in particular I never hear a clear explanation. Just ad hominem epithets aimed to silence opinion. That wont work!

  33. warriorfan September 17, 2015 7:03 pm

    31. True and the more fans you have, the more bad apples you get. I think only a really naive person would generalize an entire fan base from a few people on the internet.

  34. kimo browner September 17, 2015 7:10 pm

@ 33. you appear to be quite comfortable with that role. To the point of creating fantasy facts.

  35. tongo September 17, 2015 7:25 pm

#21 Hey, we all have a little fun at each other expense with spats about harebrained nonsensical “issues”, and it is good entertainment and fun – but we shouldn’t potentially hurt other people professional reputation in the community – especially our own Associate Head Coach. Yeah, you can say it but is it really a good idea to go there – as you may be really hurting the team long term.

  36. AlexM September 17, 2015 7:30 pm

Wow. I feel a little sorry for Nikki and the rest of the team. They beat #2 Florida, Nikki plays great and gets recognized with 2 national honors, and then the news of Huff’s leaving and Hall’s being put on leave. Bad timing to say the least. Unavoidable, but still, the timing couldn’t be worse.

  37. kimo browner September 17, 2015 7:34 pm

C’mon Tongo Do you really believe Kahuna’s speculation will hurt the team long term. HELLO! wake up and smell da coffee bra! This is Manoa. Home of the drama queens. You can start with the Board of Trustees, The President, Chancellor and AD.
They have been historical screw ups. Where have you been ! Look, it doesnt take a Dick Tracy to link HUFF to Hall’s suspension. And if you buy Matlin’s statement I have some real estate to sell you in Florida. That’s what they all say. That is template stuff. Now, who is naive?

  38. kahuna September 17, 2015 7:40 pm

The school should at least give some hint on what it is about. Don’t need to go into detail but should at lesst give us something. What if Hall did something really bad and UH is covering it up? UHcould have said something like “Hall violated a school policy call for proper behavior” or “Hall violated a recruiting violation….”

When Adrian Klemm got suspended by UCLA they gave reason as him violating recruiting rules. When Kyle Flood from Rutgers got.suspended…..they reported him contacting instructors(which is a no no. at. Rutgers).

  39. Aloha73g September 17, 2015 7:51 pm

It has NOTHING to do with Huff. Cindy is right.

  40. Shar September 17, 2015 8:44 pm

Sigh…it was so nice after the Florida win..now less than a week later…the tides change. Don’t get me wrong, I adore all of the Rainbows, including Megan. I didn’t see enough of her to get on any bandwagon, nor to change the coaching staff, nor to throw players under the bus.

In order for Hall to continue to do a good job, I think we need to respect his piracy. It is his story to tell. Second guessing isn’t helping. The only problem I have with him, seriously, is that he needs to corral his kids and they shouldn’t be running around and getting in the players’ and fans’ way during warm ups and after the game.

  41. tongo September 17, 2015 9:01 pm

#32 Why the kill joy? Same pedantic pronouncements emphasizing your supposedly superior intellect and reasoning capabilities, and others lack of critical thinking skills. Oh yeah, on your fixation on stopping apologists, the only thing that needs defending is our right to cheer on our team as we see fit. We are just having fun and it is only entertainment – and this isn’t a legal review. Have some fun, won’t you?

  42. tongo September 17, 2015 9:10 pm

#37 Your comments are an excellent example of the ad hominem arguments that you find so tasteful.

  43. noblesol September 17, 2015 10:14 pm

#40 Agree. The lack of transparency however will serve to make it worse than it is. I know a good PR firm they should consult. The whole AD should keep them on retainer. Maybe the whole of UH.

  44. Russ September 17, 2015 10:46 pm

Mahalo for your comments Tipshot. I agree with you completely. Congratulations to the Wahine for moving up to #12. Congratulations to Nikki for the Big West and National Player of the Week award. Best wishes to Megan and the Wahine basketball team. Mahalo Cindy for the updates. Let’s go Bows!

  45. Big Island VB fan September 17, 2015 10:59 pm

Now that Hall has a blemished record, he may not qualify for the head coaching job once Dave Shoji retires. He might leave permanently on his own accord.

  46. cocobean September 17, 2015 10:59 pm

How did Dick Tracy come to the conclusion Hall’s suspension had something to do with Huff’s decision to quit volleyball? Did he use his stealthy ninja skills to ferret out this information.

  47. kimo browner September 17, 2015 11:00 pm

    @42.
“…Same pedantic pronouncements emphasizing your supposedly superior intellect and reasoning capabilities, and others lack of critical thinking skills”.

Tongo, You give me far, far too much credit and under value your own.
    You are articulate and capable.
Remember, those are YOUR WORDS of characterization, NOT mine. Not ONE WORD. Address the MESSAGE if you like and spare the messenger.
Spirited debate is healthy. Im in…PAX bra.

  49. Cindy Luis September 17, 2015 11:21 pm

    People, people, people.
The Hall and Huff issues are totally unrelated. So please just stop the speculation that one had something to do with the other. Can we just put this to rest?
Huff made the decision on her own.

Spoke to Beeman today. She said she and Shoji were fine about the time-share with Huff. And that is surprised her as well. Also said that 19-year-olds make decisions that 19-year-olds make.

As for Hall, it is an internal matter. Matlin said it was a personnel matter and handled it as an AD should. Whatever happened it wouldn’t be Shoji’s job to suspend an assistant. If it was a violation of some sort, then that’s what would have been said. With so much stuff going on with NCAA investigations. the last thing UH would do is try to do is cover it up. They’d be hit with lack of institutional control.

The fact that they even said anything shows transparency, albeit vague. How many would have noticed he wasn’t on the bench? Would have been easy enough to think he was out on a recruiting trip or sick like some of the players or dealing with two sick young children as a single dad.

    45. wow that is a huge reach.

  50. Cindy Luis September 17, 2015 11:49 pm

Fair warning. Some of this speculation is bordering on libel and there seems to be enough lawyers here to understand what I mean.
I don’t care if you put it out as conjecture or try to pass it off as plausible scenarios.
It begins to border on defamation of character and none of you want to be a party to a lawsuit.

Freedom of speech is one thing. Libel is another.

scores from tonight (yes there was volleyball)
    3) USC def. Oklahoma 25-14, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20
    5) Florida def. St. Johns 25-15, 25-13, 25-21
    7) Washington def. Maryland 25-12, 27-25, 25-9
    9) BYU def. Utah 25-16, 25-18, 25-22

Thread is closed for the night. Almost midnight. Maverick, see you at Claiborne Farm. Then we can say we’ll always have Paris (KY).
