Game day Friday

Lot of good discussion on the two threads from Thursday.
Not going to recap all. you’re welcome to go back and read.

Couple of things
The VB Special Section is out in today’s paper and available online. scroll to bottom of the home page and under Special Sections, you’ll see Shoji holding a Pokeball.

Had discussed the starting lineup. Think it will look like this
S: Higgins. Opp: Koelsch. MB: Maglio, Castillo. OH Granato, hybrid of Greeley/Sibley where Greeley plays back row, Sibley front row. L: Kahakai.
They’re going to libero-out Koelsch. Maglio may play six rotations. That would mean that a DS comes into serve for Castillo. It’s a little complicated and they were still working out the logistics yesterday.

Interesting. So Maglio playing 6 rotations/back row is not such a RIDICULOUS idea after all.

great job on the special section in the paper!

I think it’s pretty crazy to throw her out there on day one against wisconsin… but we will see if that even happens.

Very nice VB Special; a good read. Wish I could go to the match tonight 🙁

  6. islandman August 26, 2016 12:49 pm

Glad they got a few smiling in the VB special inside section such as Casey, McKenna, Rika, Tom and Dave.

How is it “crazy” if Mags is better option to pass and hit out of the backrow than Koelsh !

Coaches know what they are doing and u were wrong!

#4 I too have some concerns too but I am trusting the staff. To me, Maglio seems to have a certain inner toughness that seems to rise in difficult matches. So I think she will be okay. In the end, we will all still be cheering and supporting Emily whether it is a great night or a tough night. So, just go for broke!

Now, that I had some time to digest the new lineup, it is a solid team. Wishing Casey, McKenna, and Kirsten a great opening match!

Watching florida play Nebraska at Oregon now, florida looks tough and I am jealous of oregons livestream wish UH could provide something like that for players families , oppenents fans, and wahine fans on the mainland.

The Beach getting thumped by Portland State. Not looking good at all so far.

  12. Warriorfan August 26, 2016 1:46 pm

big west is not looking good today. bad news for wahine rpi yikes.at least cal poly looked decent and won.
Not sure why some people thought ucsb would be good.

  13. Cubicle1126 August 26, 2016 1:48 pm

is maglio being asked to pass? i just figure that if she’s being left in through the back row, it’s so that hawaii has an additional attack option (which they lost when taylor was sidelined).

i would think kahakai, granato and greeley (and/or sibley) would still take primary passing duties. asking maglio to pass too in the first match of the season on little practice might be too much to ask. let the others worry about passing so it frees maglio to just focus on hitting (when she’s in the back row) and on hitting/blocking (when in the front row).

no matter what, this is going to be an interesting and very non-traditional lineup. it will take time for it to gel, and coaches need to stay on top of where players need to be (or risk being called for rotation violations).

a lot of challenges, but these players are gamers! c’mon wahine!

  14. Cubicle1126 August 26, 2016 1:53 pm

on paper, ucsb looks like they should be better. but of course, dunno how a team is going to be until the match starts.

last year ucsb looked good on paper too … they’ve gotten some nice recruits (ruddins, rice, juley, hoffman). but then injuries struck, and their setting turned out to be real suspect.

there’s some quality players there … maybe coaching and/or chemistry issues? it’s still just the opening day … maybe they get their act together as the season goes on … still though, that’s a tough way to start the season … to choke in the latter stages of close sets …

  15. po'okela August 26, 2016 3:10 pm

if she stays in the back she’ll play in taylor’s old spot and not pass but still be a viable option from the backrow.

I only said its crazy because it’s the first match and that’s a lot of pressure to put on someone who has never played backrow for the college level.

UH just suspended Jerrol Garcia-Williams, Daniel Lewis, Tui Unga for this game for disciplinary reasons.

  17. Willie August 26, 2016 4:25 pm

OMG, wounded duck passes and already an interception. So far nothing changed for #11. Hope there will be a short honest leash on him as stated.

  18. Willie August 26, 2016 4:34 pm

O-line looking good. #11 looking better!

  19. oldtimer808 August 26, 2016 4:41 pm

Who was suspended from the game besides Unga.

  20. Cindy Luis August 26, 2016 4:48 pm

I would suggest going to Tsai’s blog if you want updates on FB
It’s 7-7 with under 6 in the first quarter to play.

And can I ask that we let the live streaming issue go for today? The griping is not going to change the situation.

Am going to start a new thread with Top 25 and UA-KState.
