Friday practice update, Top 25 scores

sorry, still having internet issues at home. Came into the office to post
Practice went about 8-945 this morning, they’ll go at 830 Saturday

Mitchem is not cleared and may not be available the rest of the season. She is seeing doctor again on Monday but looking like the earliest would be the week of the regionals if Hawaii were to make it that far.

Both Greeley and Taylor still a little banged up, Taylor did mostly serve and pass today. Castillo was playing right and got reps in back row on some rotations.

Spoke with Shoji about Sunday Selection and he said he didn’t want to speculate but thought they got some help with UCLA beating SC and Oregon State’s win. He thought they still have a slim shot at hosting if committee looks at everything but … Said he watched the entire UCLA-SC match and that it was a good win for Sealy.

Asked him of the potential 4 west coast sites … UW, Stanford, UCLA and SC, which would he like best and like least. Said he didn’t want to be playing UW at UW again. Thought Stanford could drop out of being a host site. He wouldn’t mind UCLA, saying he felt they had a chance to win that one 21 matches ago.
Then asked him about going to BYU. He said not a good place to go with the altitude and all.

Interesting fact: BYU’s fall teams have yet to lose a home game.
Volleyball is 12-0
Football 6-0
M Basketball 3-0
W Basketball 2-0
W Soccer 11-0

Since the ncaa is so concerned about travel costs, they’ll probably send us to UW again. Lol.

  2. noblesol November 27, 2015 12:42 pm

Thanks for the update Cindy. Not so concerned about where they go this year. UW at this point is almost their post season home away from home. I think their fan base keeps growing there each year. Miss not having them at SSC to watch, but resigned to seeing them on the road somewhere.

I listened to, not watched, the USC – UCLA game. UCLA’s announcer was very good, but he seemed as surprised as anyone by how well UCLA was playing. It was fun to listen to. UCLA’s back row defense, their middle Felix, and their ‘backup’ setter Muno stood out as the difference makers. Their serve receive was excellent and they kept Bricio from going on long service runs most of the match. Sealy had a good game plan and managed well.

Bummer if Mitchem can’t play at all during tournament time. She’s a huge asset in any rotation but I believe Castillo is capable of filling the gap if called upon. Wouldn’t mind the Wahine going to UW again because this team has the confidence and swagger to play and beat whoever they play in the sub and regionals. GO BOWS.

  4. AlexM November 27, 2015 1:03 pm

Too bad about Mitchem. She would have helped a lot, either at MH or OH.

I’d be a little worried about playing UCLA again. They looked really good at USC (though USC played poorly that night). They seem to do well in big matches and Sealy knows our team and Dave’s coaching tendencies well, after coaching with and against him for so long.

Will not be happy hiring HC with no HC experience; tried it with Chow and it was a disaster.
I like Ellerson but still, June Jones is by far to me the best selection and he’s got a lot of ties and connections all over the place.
    June Jones folks. Mahalo-plenty.

  6. Cubicle1126 November 27, 2015 2:10 pm

    Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

Just hoping for a good draw for hawaii on selection sunday … can’t wait for the tourney to start!

  7. mctruck November 27, 2015 2:14 pm

    Aloha, AD-Matlin;

Hire June Jones; he’s the only logical choice in my opinion. He’s got the right connection’s in this football arena. You won’t be sorry.

  8. H-Man November 27, 2015 3:03 pm

The worse would be if Hawaii were to be sent to BYU. I like Washington since it presents an opportunity to get over the mental block of winning there. We really need Nikki at 100%. Greeley too. I feel good about the Wahine’s chances with Olivia and Emily’s strong presence in the middle.

    Anyway, it will be Rolo.

  11. Andrew November 27, 2015 7:42 pm

Cindy, do you agree with coach Shoji that there is still a slim chance for the Wahine to host, say if also UCLA beats Stanford tonight too?

  12. Andrew November 27, 2015 7:43 pm

Watching that match too and both teams look very beatable

  13. Andrew November 27, 2015 7:44 pm

UH has a stacked team this year. Especially if they play as well as they did like when they played Florida, they could go far in the tournament and finally hopefully get rid of that 2nd round curse

  14. Bleachercoach November 27, 2015 8:01 pm

Unfortunate for Mitchem but if she has it been cleared yet I would rather go with someone healthy and in practice/game shape like Castillo.
She could be the under-used surprise in tournament.
So far U.C.L.A. looking good versus Stanford leading 2-1.
Congratulations to Rolo!! I am surprised but I still thought that Jones or Miano would’ve gotten the nod. Rolo is young and unproven as a HC…Miano played in the N.F.L and has proven so much in his contribution to our Youth here. June Jones is the only one that brought a BCS Bowl to Hawaii and can revitalize the stadium crowds. I feel that Rolo will draw crowds early but if he doesnt produce. the fans will not have as much sympathy as if it was June or Rich… June and Rich are more of a household name than Rolo between all 3…Just think from O.C. to H.C. here (like Coach Chow) in turning a program around may be a tough task. Don’t get me wrong. I hope he does well. Sorry back to volleyball….

  15. Bleachercoach November 27, 2015 8:16 pm

U.C.L.A. really making our lost to them early look legitimate in their play this past week.. (not a bad loss at all)

  16. Rosepetals November 27, 2015 8:25 pm

    Is Ginger playing beach again?

  17. Cindy Luis November 27, 2015 8:30 pm

    11. I do, although UCLA lost in 5.
    Stanford pulls it out 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-11.
14-15. UCLA hasn’t used periods in years.

    16. Long is playing beach again.

  18. jmy November 27, 2015 8:34 pm

Penn St. at Nebraska tomorrow…Huskers look legit this year…

  19. OrbitalRipZ November 27, 2015 8:45 pm

In the Friday matches that UH fans had the most interest:

    1. UCLA loses 2-3 at Pauley to Stanford. . . . After Oregon St upset #23 Arizona St on Senior Night, it was too much to expect the Beavers — which has faced the fifth-toughest schedule in the nation, according to the NCAA — to do the same to the Ducks. OSU (6-24, 4-16 Pac 12) ended its season with another lost.

    2. Long Beach St (24-6) took out the broom over Pacific, and if LBSU can win its last match (vs. Denver) it can make a case that its 12 Ws out of its last 13 matches deserve “bubble” consideration by the NCAA [Selection] Committee.

    3. Seed No. 1 Wichita St made it to Saturday’s finals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament for the automatic qualifier to the Big Show, but its rival Seed No. 2 Southern Illinois U didn’t as SIU was swept by Seed No. 3 Missouri St. Bears.

  20. Andrew November 27, 2015 8:56 pm

    11.

Haha right and as I ask that UCLA loses

  21. Cindy Luis November 27, 2015 9:15 pm

    19. agree that The Beach is a bubble team. You just never know.

anyway, be back off and on. Internet out at home and have been told the earliest that they can come is Wednesday.

will check in Saturday. Good night.

  22. Maverick November 27, 2015 9:22 pm

11,17,20. IMO, UH lost out on seeding when LBSU fell out of the top 50 RPI rankings, and is projected to stay out even with a win against Denver in its last match. UH only has two top 50 RPI wins, which the selection committee will look unfavorably upon. Below I compare the 2013 (Hartong’s senior year) and 2015 teams using some of the committee’s seeding criteria, plus the AVCA poll which is NOT considered (criterion: 2013 results as of the time committee made its selections, 2015 current results):

    Record: 24-4, 26-1
    Overall RPI: 17, 26
    Non-conf record: 11-1, 10-1
    Non-conf RPI: 4, 17
    Conf record: 13-3, 16-0
    Conf RPI: 8, 14
    Road record: 7-2, 8-0
    Record last 10: 8-2, 10-0
    Record vs top 50 RPI: 6-2, 2-1
    vs 51-100 RPI: 6-1, 6-0
    vs 101-200 RPI: 5-1, 8-0
    vs 201+ RPI: 7-0, 10-0
    AVCA rank: 12, 8
    Seed: 11, TBD

Clearly the 2015 team has a weaker resume than the 2013 team, which ended with the 11th seed despite not having a top 16 RPI. I have seen one projection of UH’s final RPI at 26th, and it is difficult to see UH jumping 10 spots to a 16th seed even if UCLA had beaten Stanford tonite. If the AVCA poll were considered and LBSU was a top 50 RPI team, then I would give UH a good shot at a seed. But not this year. Just wishful thinking at this point.

More interesting to discuss where you’d like UH to be sent. I prefer UCLA by far. Most beatable of all the teams mentioned given locational considerations/home court/etc. (assuming UCLA, UW, USC, Stanford, BYU host). UH would be playing UCLA a second time and it is more difficult beating the same opponent twice, especially when fairly matched. Plus UH would be highly motivated to win. Then I would pick BYU, Stanford, and finally UW/USC. I hope the committee considers UH to be the strongest non-seed and gives a favorable bracket, but not holding my breath.

  23. HawaiiMongoose November 27, 2015 9:26 pm

Obviously I’m hoping UH will be able to host, but if not I’d like to see them get sent to Stanford. I’ll be on a business trip to San Francisco next week and it would give me a chance to attend both UH’s first match and, if they win, their second.

  24. warriorfan November 27, 2015 9:48 pm

I’m torn who I prefer UH to play, I know UCLA has less weapons than Stanford but the UCLA backrow defense gives UH fits and Stanford seems slower in the backrow and to close the blocks, however if Hodson gets hot or UH doesn’t serve tough enough Stanford can go to their 6’8 middle and she will be hard to stop. BYU with the altitude won’t be good with UH’s serving, since I think BYU is probably the weakest passing team of the seeds.
I think I actually would prefer UH gets Kansas , Texas A&M or Missouri, but not sure if the Travel will tire the team out.

  25. haleiwacrossfitter November 27, 2015 11:12 pm

I feel bad for Mitchem. We have her for only 2 years and may not have her during the post season run. Was really hoping she would be the X factor for us this post season. Man…her finger must have really been f&^*&ed up!!

And…I think Rolo was a good choice. I remember when he was playing, I thought he had what it took to lead a team one day. Hope he does well.

  26. mo-jo November 28, 2015 3:03 pm

24, agree. after watching UCLA peaking with USC and Stanford, i would like to stay away from the Pac 12.. entirely.
Midwest (SEC) would be a better start for Hawaii. Hoping against hope for a host but if not, those choices you mention seem more palatable than our usual NCAA ship out. Just saying..

  27. OrbitalRipZ November 28, 2015 4:02 pm

Don’t think NCAA [Selection] Committee will send UH to the UCLA subregional (if UCLA does host — and that’s far from a certainty) since the teams already met this year.

Appears that of the MidMajors, BYU appears to be the most likely to be 1 of the 16 seeds. The WCC will get 2 bids — automatic qualifier BYU/15rpm [26-3, 16-2] and runner-up San Diego/28rpi [21-9, 14-4] — but may get as many as 4 bids if the WCC’s “bubble” teams — Loyola Marymount/29rpi [22-8, 13-5] and Santa Clara/37rpi [22-8, 13-5] — are awarded with at-large invitations.

Going to be very interesting to see where the NCAA [Selection] Committee sends the Mountain West (Colorado St/31rpi [26-3, 19-0] which just beat Iowa State in a nonconf. Saturday match), Big Sky (Northern Arizona/35rpi [28-4, 14-0]), and WAC (New Mexico St/64rpi [28-5, 14-0] champs.

Also still interested if Long Beach State/63 rpi [25-6, 13-3] of the Big West gets a unexpected at-large bid as it sits on the “bubble” along with a number of other MidMajor league runner-ups as MidMajor conferences get second serving only if there’s something left after the Power5 pig out on first serving of the NCAA [Selection] Committee.

If we are sitting on pins and needles waiting for Selection Sunday, you can imagine the pressure that’s on Na Wahine and Team Shoji.

  28. Cindy Luis November 28, 2015 4:24 pm

    http://hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=34589

    New thread up for Saturday.
Mindset for the Wahine. They’ve done all they can do. Players said too many possibilities so no sense worrying about it.
Shoji still thinks they have a shot to host. But also said they could be on a plane Monday night.
