Fri: Practice, U.S. men vs. Italy; NCAA match to watch

pink

Taking ‘Dig Pink’ to another level. On Thursday, Berg had team do a digging drill wearing sox on their hands. since they were in humid Gym 1, it helped with not leaving sweaty skid marks.

Interesting start to Friday practice. Supposed to be in the arena but the lights are on a timer so they started warmups in Gym 1. Moved to the arena with the lights coming on at 7:30.

Castillo not cleared to practice this morning. Not sure what’s up but her right arm has a wrap on it. She and Mitchem are in the weight room

So back to two middles. Burns has shown a lot of athleticism As Hall said yesterday. can’t teach height.

Mitchem participated some in practices Thursday, helping serve during passing drills. She said she feels good, in a little pain, but otherwise things are OK.

the Hawaii-Wisconsin match is one of the ‘three games to watch’ opening weekend
Yes, the game is on in the wee hours of the morning for many continental United States, but this matchup is between the fourth and sixth rank teams in the AVCA Coaches’ Poll.

Hawaii, coming off a stellar 29-2 season, is poised to win the Big West this year, and the reigning Big West Player of the Year senior Nikki Taylor returns to lead her team to another season of wins. She led the league in kills, blocks and aces, but she is not the only powerful player for the Warriors. Taylor is joined by Emily Maglio, Kalei Greeley and Savannah Kahakai, all with impressive stats that will make Hawaii a difficult team to beat for Wisconsin.

However, the Badgers just welcomed a killer recruiting class, and they are coming off a 26-7 season. Senior Laura Carlini steps onto the court this year as captain, and with her and her teammates striking stats, this game could go either way.

Am so glad to hear that Mitchem can still practice. It goes well for a full recovery. We need you Annie! Glad that Burns has shown that she has quickness and is athletic. Who knows – we may have two “maple trees” starting for us shortly. Perhaps, the UH band should start practicing the Canadian national anthem in their honor.

Practice is done. Players moving into dorms today. A few have stayed to get some reps. Mitchem serving. on the court are Higgins, Koelsch, Anderson, Maglio.
Practice music has changed a bit from last year. a little more mellow
word on Castillo is minor injury to her elbow area. nothing mechanical.
Team back tomorrow. Green-White scrimmage Saturday afternoon. It is open only to boosters.

  3. H-Man August 19, 2016 10:02 am

Cindy, is there like a booster list?

  4. Cindy Luis August 19, 2016 10:25 am

    3. like what kind of list? To clarify, it’s open to booster club members

  5. jm2375 August 19, 2016 10:36 am

H-Man – #3 – It is probably open only to active (paid) members of the Wahine VB booster club. There will probably be someone at the door with a list. Although, I imagine if you joined today online and showed up with your receipt, they might let you in. 😀

BTW, the Warrior Volleyball Booster Club membership forms are available online. It’s the earliest it’s been available in years.

    1. i wouldn’t call it practicing. She’s dressed, participates in some warmups with the trainers, serves in some drills. Is in the weight room during most of practices doing things she can do without using the one hand, such as stationary bike.

  7. Cindy Luis August 19, 2016 10:43 am

    5. thanks for the answer. still time to join. Boosters also are providing the post-scrimmage potluck dishes.

    RE: Wisconsin

    – Passing is typically a problem every year for the Wahine; so Shoji may wish to switch to 4 on serve receive when problems arise. With 4 coverage the 3 point stance can be used.

    – Stay away from serving Taylor Morey (libero), who represented the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team that competed in China.

    – Wisconsin’s middles are very active so isolation may work even better than fast sets.

blunite — taylor morey graduated last year. wisconsin will have a new libero suiting up this year.

also, how good is wisconsin’s serving? i’m not sure their serving is so tough that it would merit switching hawaii’s serve to 4. they averaged less than 1 ace per set last year. their best server looks to be haleigh nelson (31 aces last year). maybe just get video on her and prepare for her type of serve.

plus, hopefully, hawaii’s passing will be improved this year. we shall see.

  13. mauna August 19, 2016 6:02 pm

Hawaii’s weakest passing link has graduated. That alone is an improvement from last season.

  14. Ron August 19, 2016 9:35 pm

    Mean and unnecessary mauna.

  15. tongo August 20, 2016 6:50 am

Agree – totally uncalled for. When was doing your best not good enough for student athletes.

  16. blunite August 20, 2016 9:02 am

    Wisconsin Observations:

    – Middles cut the ball to negate standard straight up block,
    – Perimeter and Man-Up Defenses,
    – Carlini likes to dump (on video at least),
    – Favor the slide and shoot (including slide fake)

  17. Cindy Luis August 20, 2016 12:28 pm

    13. agree. mean and uncalled for. leaving it up to keep the other comments in context. The team is going to miss her leadership.
