Wahine VB: Day 8 recap, Taylor

Lifting day. As mentioned before they go M-W-F.

Nikki Taylor said she’s been cleared to run, saying it’s ‘baby steps.’

There continues to be music played during practice for the first time I can recall. Heavy on the country towards the end.

Afternoon practice spirited and loose. Ah Mow-Santos set one side, Wong the other for a bit during warmups. They went into a scrimmage, pretty evenly matched. Magill and Adolpho are usually on the same team. They started out that way then Adolpho switched to the other to have her matched up with Magill. Good competition there. A number of long rallies.

Asked Shoji if he had a depth chart yet, He said by Friday. Asked how he thought things were going . He said good, they were getting better, and they missed Nikki.

Good to hear Nikki Taylor is cleared to run. But I am a little confused now, thought her right elbow was the problem not her legs. Why has her right elbow kept her from running, is there something we do not know about concerning one of her legs?

Forgot to mention, it sounds like Nikki Taylor will miss most of the pre-conference matches, by her saying, “baby steps”. Hope she will be able to play this season, otherwise, she may be the lone redshirt.

1 – you do realize that you use your arms to run right? the biomechanics of running impact your entire body, keeping your arms in a flexed position for a prolonged period of time would also affect the triceps and ligaments involved in her hyperextension.

To minimize stress she could run like Napolean Dynamite.

J the L Now that was funny!

  6. mei mei August 19, 2014 11:47 am

4 that made my day! LOL!

1.2. Until yesterday, she had only been cleared to rehab, a lot of lower body work and cycling. Now she can run, join the team for workout running.
Don’t know why you think she’ll miss most of the preseason. Or start taking that big leap to missing the whole year, red-shirting, etc.
    We’ll know more next week.

I’m sure they’ll bring Nikki to full recovery and not have the problem recur again. Starting with the scrimmage this Saturday and the pre-season tournament matches, it’s an opportunity for the candidates for OH to step up and deliver in her absence.

Cindy, just by Nikki Taylor saying, “baby steps”. That translates to me, taking really small steps at a time. Not going to be able to go full speed in the near future. Once cleared to swing, then maybe 5 to 10 swings a day, as long as NO discomfort, then going from there. Do not see her being cleared to play until possibly Conference time, if that. Remember no one knows how her arm will react once she starts to take swings again. She could feel no discomfort at all in her arm, or it could be a no go. If she feel discomfort when she starts to take swings again, then redshirt.

Scrooge what do you mean by Brandon 2.0. I don’t tend to over analyze things nor do I tend to ask uneeded questions

Without knowing the extent of NT’s injury no one is in a position to say when she may be ready–that would include a possible decision to redshirt. An elbow injury to an OH is like a knee injury to a running back. If it is deep it may require full recovery. I haven’t heard any discussion on when she was injured or the extent of her injury. Please share if anyone knows…

  15. volleyballfan August 19, 2014 4:27 pm

I do not believe my questions are unneeded. All you have to do is look at what is happening with the pitchers on the UH Baseball Team. Those pitchers with arm difficulty, how long it takes them to recover, and also, bringing them back into competition to early. I can see that happening with Nikki Taylor. Bringing her back to early and putting to much pressure on her to be the “GOTO” player. An arm injury is an arm injury. Having Nikki come back and take 40-50 swings a match, she will not last the season. The best for Nikki is give her arm rest, which she is doing now. Do not rush back. I would be shocked if she is available, for any of the preseason matches. I am hoping she does not come back until the Conference season if that. Anytime before that, and I do not see her lasting the season.

Can’t wait to see new lineup.

  17. Cubicle1126 August 19, 2014 4:39 pm

volleyballfan — no one here is saying that nikki should be “rushed” back. but also no one is jumping off the deep end with so very little info. you’re just gonna make yourself (dare i say it) crazy. we’ll know in time the extent and impact of nikki’s injury.

  18. Warriorfan August 19, 2014 4:54 pm

  27. volleyballfan August 19, 2014 6:08 pm

UH Fan, thanks for putting out that short clip on the OH. But I must say, that tall person, imitating a Wahine player, playing the backrow, does not have any game at all. 🙂

  28. Brandon August 19, 2014 7:10 pm

    Brandon=wahinefan44=amazing person.

Lol jk, Im pretty annoying but at least I can admit that

  29. Cindy Luis August 19, 2014 9:24 pm

Taylor will be ready when she is ready. I didn’t read into her saying ‘baby steps’ other than being cleared to run is the first step in officially being back.
She was in a great mood today. A very nice young woman. She has been in a lot of pain so I took her mood to be a good sign.

  30. Cindy Luis August 19, 2014 9:36 pm

    14. JK, you can go back on the board to see the discussion on Taylor from Aug. 10.
