WSU rolling on…If they can beat Cal on Sun., they should be top ten…Very impressive…

  3. tongo September 30, 2016 7:05 pm

No streaming on BW TV as yet? What’s going on?

  4. z September 30, 2016 7:06 pm

    Annie in the middle.

  5. Big Island VB fan September 30, 2016 7:08 pm

That’s true, there’s no video, so we have to just listen to the audio.

  6. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:09 pm

    4. yes, mentioned that in the initial post.
    UH with 3 early blocks.
    Up 5-1. TO Titans

  7. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:10 pm

    CFS tallest player is 6’1″

  8. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:11 pm

    I will check on video

  9. z September 30, 2016 7:11 pm

    CSF no kills so far.

  10. z September 30, 2016 7:13 pm

    Okay they got 1.

  11. cruisecontrol September 30, 2016 7:13 pm

I see that Oceanic’s website now has a live stream available for their telecast of the match, but you have to be a subscriber and have login credentials. Please don’t tell me that UH pulled their free stream because of it.

  12. tongo September 30, 2016 7:13 pm

    Thanks Cindy! Still no video.

    UH up 17-9. TO Titans

  16. Big Island VB fan September 30, 2016 7:19 pm

Both sides are playing poorly as Hawaii is hitting zero and Fullerton is hitting negative as I heard. Not too sorry that I can’t watch the match.

  17. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:20 pm

Should be short nite, probably 75 minutes tops.

  18. z September 30, 2016 7:21 pm

Ugly match so far. UH hitting .067, -.421.

  19. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:21 pm

Fullerton challenging if Taylor hit the net.

  20. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:22 pm

CSF waited too long to challenge, ref should have denied.

  21. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:23 pm

    21. no they didn’t. it came during the timeout

  22. Andrew September 30, 2016 7:25 pm

I noticed that there is a job opening for women’s assistant volleyball coach. Has there been any notices of someone leaving?

  23. islandman September 30, 2016 7:25 pm

    11. Thanks !

  24. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:26 pm

Higgins and Ross in at 22-12

  25. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:28 pm

Ross ends it 25-13. Titans have just 2 kills.

  26. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:29 pm

Coach feeling pretty confident, subbing freely in 1st set.

  27. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:32 pm

    22. it’s for beach volleyball. might be Evan. will have to check.
UH is working on the live streaming.

  28. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:33 pm

    26. well they were up pretty big. he did say he wanted to get Ross in.

  29. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:34 pm

    Shimen Fayad is pretty good.

  30. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:35 pm

Fullerton challenging that Taylor was block and ball landed in.

  31. Maverick September 30, 2016 7:35 pm

Can’t see the match without streaming, so I’m just going by the stats. No left-side attack tonight. Hitting negative against a team whose tallest player in the game is 6’1″. Embarrassing. And UH is wasting Castillo’s production too. No middle attack either. Fullerton is really not that good, so UH must be lacking focus.

    Ok streaming just came on.

  32. Big Island VB fan September 30, 2016 7:36 pm

    11. Bit West mandates a free video show. It’s in the contract. So I don’t think that OC Sports preempted the free UH video. I think the must have technical issues. At least the opponent is not Long Beach as I’d be so mad to miss that match. On the other hand, Fullerton is forgettable.

Sure hope that Hawaii will play at a higher level against Long Beach next week, or they’ll end up like Cal Poly, 0-3 sets.

  33. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:38 pm

challenge rejected. Granato with an ace. it’s 3-3

  34. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:38 pm

    Live stream should be working

  35. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:39 pm

    32. OCSports has nothing to do with the video stream this season.

  36. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:41 pm

Mitchem with the kill. UH up 8-4. TO Titans

  37. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:43 pm

    31. not sure what you mean about wasting Castillo’s production. He’s decided on Mitchem in the middle and they like Sibley on the outside.

  38. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:43 pm

May be an opportunity to let Okino play.

  39. Ashley September 30, 2016 7:46 pm

i thought that the review challenge wasn’t gonna be used during conference play? someone said because all schools couldn’t accommodate to the review system. i remember someone saying that it was only gonna be used during pre season

  40. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:48 pm

Maglio with the tip. UH up 15-8. TO Titans

  41. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:49 pm

    38, Okino is redshirting.

  42. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:50 pm

    39. I don’t get it either since no one else in the conference is doing it, except I think Long Beach

  43. Maverick September 30, 2016 7:50 pm

    37. Castillo in the middle and Mitchem on the outside has been more productive than Mitchem (or Castillo) in the middle and Sibley on the outside. That’s what I mean. Castillo and her 6’3″ frame isn’t contributing to the team when she sits on the bench. Also, Mitchem will have fewer attempts in the middle while her replacement at left, Sibley, won’t make up for the loss of her left-side production. Right now she is 4-2-13 for .154 (against a poor and undersized Fullerton team–I’m watching and I’m not impressed at all) and is a .162 hitter for the season. If Castillo isn’t considered at left, then UH will live and die by the left this year (and we know that against the really good tournament teams, left-side inconsistency will likely lead to over-use of Nikki Taylor).

  44. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:52 pm

CSF has more trouble with the high ball set than Hawaii.

  45. Maverick September 30, 2016 7:52 pm

39,42. If some teams can do replay, then Big West should allow it at schools that can accommodate. Don’t understand the logic of “either we all have replay or none of us does”. It will help with officiating in some of the conference matches and there is not advantage/disadvantage that I can see.

  46. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:56 pm

    6 2?

  47. Blunite September 30, 2016 7:57 pm

    Both Higs & Kendra in

  48. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 7:58 pm

Maglio with the kill. it’s 25-16.

  49. Andy September 30, 2016 7:59 pm

It’s so cool to see Kendra and Taylor in at the same time.

  50. warriorwahine September 30, 2016 8:01 pm

so how bout norenes high rate of setting..and attack percentage!

  51. warriorwahine September 30, 2016 8:02 pm

    49. a very interesting combination indeed.

  52. tongo September 30, 2016 8:07 pm

Thanks for your help Cindy. I am watching the regular broadcast via OC Sports Live Stream for those who are TWC Spectrum Subscribers.

  53. Blunite September 30, 2016 8:08 pm

    Time for Burns & Castillo

  54. z September 30, 2016 8:09 pm

I think we will see Casey in the third set.

  55. z September 30, 2016 8:09 pm

I like Annie in the middle.

  56. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:12 pm

sorry if some of your posts are not showing up. I’ve lost a couple.
one including disagreeing with Maverick re: Castillo and Mitchem. Not like they’v e played that many matches together. They like Mitchem in the middle and she’s more comfortable out there. has struggled with the high ball to the outside.

  57. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:12 pm

    Castillo in for Maglio

  58. z September 30, 2016 8:12 pm

    Was that a Bowen hit?

  59. Andy September 30, 2016 8:15 pm

I was up in Santa Barbara last week. Compared to last year, this year’s returnees look one notch better physically. One time Annie, Nikki, and Casey were all standing next to each other. They looked like three Olympians. Not the kind from the Olympics – the kind from Mount Olympus.

  60. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:15 pm

Iosia with an ace. it’s 9-4. TO Titans

  61. islandman September 30, 2016 8:16 pm

    35. Like 11. cruisecontrol said there is now OC Sports streaming again like last year, for OTWC subscribers.
    http://www.ocsports.tv/

  62. Maverick September 30, 2016 8:18 pm

    56. No problem with others disagreeing with me, that’s what this blog is for. But I don’t see any other solution to the left-side woes unless Greeley heals up (or maybe seeing Castillo out there, although that does not seem to be an option), and against the top teams that have been battle-tested in the Big 10, Pac-12 or WCC, it is a stretch to think this team’s left-side weakness/inconsistency won’t be exploited to great effect in the tournament. Assuming Greeley doesn’t heal up as hoped and Castillo is on the bench, expect to see Taylor overused at right against the top teams as the left-side will likely face the challenge of bigger blocks.

  63. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:24 pm

Higgins in to set. Anderson with an ace. it’s 19-10. TO Titans

  64. islandman September 30, 2016 8:24 pm

Chris on TV said that Sibley had two good weeks of practice, so i guess that’s a reason she started tonight.

  65. Blunite September 30, 2016 8:24 pm

I wouldn’t be too concerned about the lineup for these 2 matches. (Except for the sloppiness).

  66. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:26 pm

    Burns in

  67. z September 30, 2016 8:26 pm

Annie leading all hitters with 9 kills.

  68. islandman September 30, 2016 8:27 pm

At least for tonight, Sibley is hitting .333 so far.

  69. Maverick September 30, 2016 8:30 pm

I will concede one critical point related to Mitchem in the middle–she gives the team a legitimate slide attack, and she has done it well tonight against an undersized team.

At the end of the day, it is difficult to make any conclusions based on this match as Fullerton doesn’t pose much of a challenge. We need to wait until next week’s LBSU match to see where the team is with the new starting lineup.

  70. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 8:32 pm

    Sibley ends it. 25-18

  71. z September 30, 2016 8:34 pm

Freshman Sibley did a real nice job tonight.

  72. z September 30, 2016 8:35 pm

Dave is saying that Sibley needs more reps because she will eventually be the starter.

  73. Big Island VB fan September 30, 2016 8:38 pm

No double digit kills on either side, so no double-doubles today. Three players had double-digit digs, two on Hawaii’s side, Granato and Kahakai and one player on Fullerton’s side. Pretty unexciting match to say the least. Glad it’s over.

  74. Ashley September 30, 2016 8:44 pm

the match seemed slow. an extremely off night for Granato kill wise, only getting her first kill in set 3. hope they play better come Sunday, i see Riverside as a little more better than CSF. but we will see.

  75. Rabbit ears September 30, 2016 9:06 pm

Higgins set the middle better in the third. Norene’s sets in 1 and 2 were too low.

  76. Ron September 30, 2016 9:14 pm

I thought that Annie looked terrific in the middle. She just takes over. This was Sibley’s best match. Granato had an off night but she wasn’t set that much and I only remember one shank. Greeley passes so well from the back row that she is obviously a fixture there. I was also once again impressed with Smiths passing. All I can tell you guys that didn’t view it, Annie put on a show! Her and Nikki are the two best players I have seen this year.

  77. tongo September 30, 2016 9:38 pm

Agree Ron. When set to their sweet spots, both Nikki and Annie are a sight to behold when crushing the ball. Just awesome.

And yes Z, after a Mitchem crush, I too thought it looked a lot like former UH MH Heather Bowen, a 2x 1st Team AA and Olympian.

  78. Cindy Luis September 30, 2016 9:47 pm

Iosia is having problems setting it high enough for the middles. It is something they continue to work on in practice.
    72. have said they like Sibley on the outside but Shoji also said she needed to block better and hit for a high percentage to keep the spot.
    76. Mitchem can crush it. she’s very good on the slides. but she is also struggling with connecting on the quick sets, as is Maglio.

  79. islandman September 30, 2016 9:50 pm

Sibley hit . 368 tonight with two blocks. She hit .348 with 9 kills vs. Washington and .529 with 11 kills vs. Utah Valley.

  80. Maverick September 30, 2016 10:35 pm

Let’s not cherry pick the data re: Sibley. She also hit negative against Pacific and Northern Illinois, and under .200 in 5 other matches. In summary, she is a typical freshman, highly inconsistent. The question is whether she will be more efficient and consistent by year’s end…same for Granato.

  81. islandman September 30, 2016 10:53 pm

I was answering to Ron that this was Sibley’s best match which it may have been close to with the blocks.

  82. Maverick September 30, 2016 11:05 pm

    Ok, my bad.

  83. warriorwahine September 30, 2016 11:06 pm

cindy was the new challenge rule included in conference play? or only plays like uh with the caneras how ever sizeable?

  84. warriorwahine September 30, 2016 11:07 pm

    83. places (venues) like uh not plays

  85. blunite September 30, 2016 11:15 pm

Next up is Riverside, who got beat by CSF. Wahine lineup is anybody’s guess, figure a shorter match on Sunday.

  86. oldtimer808 September 30, 2016 11:38 pm

Maverick do you ever have anything positive to say other than our coaches should be doing this and that. I’ve always trusted that our coaches know better because of their understanding of each role their athletes contribute in the scheme of things. Yes this blogs gives individuals like yourself a chance to express yourself but the bottom line is who really cares what you think because our coaches knows best.

  87. Maverick September 30, 2016 11:50 pm

If you can’t handle the comments or the criticisms, don’t read the blog. Lots of folks criticize…just go back to last year’s mauling of TMO. If you disagree, fine. I can handle it, although to your point, who really cares what what oldtimer808 thinks?

  88. blunite October 1, 2016 12:21 am

Oldtimer808, I’ve watched Wahine volleyball for awhile and found that the coaches do not see everything nor know everything.

Just read Shoji’s book. In it he says that he would have loved to have worked with other coaches, to see how they do things. Unfortunately, neither the opportunity nor his job allowed for it. Consequently, he is open to new ideas or observations that his coaching staff may have missed.

Know that he has used ideas/suggestions sent to him; especially if there is ample justification for the change. (Like changing from OH dominant to OPP dominant.)

  89. noblesol October 1, 2016 5:34 am

Went to the match but also recorded it on the DVR, and seriously thinking of deleting it. Not sure I’ll ever want to watch this match again. The stat box though is easier on the eyes; however Titan fans should probably avoid looking at it.

For Hawaii, most notable on the plus side was only 1 serve receive error, no ball handling errors, nice distribution between the pins and middles, with the middles getting 39% of the sets and hitting a combined .353. I thought the passing was pretty good, no overpasses that I can recall, and the setter wasn’t having to chase ’em down. Blocking was strong. Everyone got a chance to play, that’s always a positive. On the down side, too many service errors against a team that was struggling to get out of it’s own way and not hit negative. Granato hit .000. Although Sibs eventually put up some good numbers, it was a sputtering start.

Agree with Mav, the left OH position is still a search/work-in-progress for consistency/production. If they are going to keep Annie in the middle, likely we will be wondering if Casey can help at OH. Whatever they are going to do with the lineup, it’s time to figure it out and stick with it.

Long Beach State is next week, and although they were inconsistent out of conference, they at times looked good. In conference play, they have been playing very well. Last night LB comfortably handed Cal Poly in three straight sets. LB had only 14 attack errors to CP’s 25, they had only 3 service errors and 4 service aces, and only 1 reception error and no ball handling errors. CP hit .106 vs. LB’s .255. LB had 14 blocks to CP’s 6. LB appears to be gelling in time for Hawaii next week. Are the Wahine ready?

  90. tongo October 1, 2016 7:11 am

Watched the Long Beach vs Cal Poly match on BW TV last night. Was totally shocked how Mustangs serve receive fell apart. The Beach served tough and blocked well. Mustangs were out of system most of the night and it showed – blocked 14 times and held to .106 hitting. Nele Barber was mixing up her shots and Cal Poly could not handle her. She is a really smart hitter with all the shots.

On the wahine match, I too thought the serve was kind of low and a little faster to the hitters. I thinks it is good thing and is necessary especially in post season. For now, our hitters are still adjusting to it and not quite sync up. Hopefully, it will be better against the Beach.

  91. Not an Expert October 1, 2016 7:30 am

At this time the left side hitter position is the concern. If they had a player right now like a Hawthorne, the Wahine will be a force. As mentioned they have the caliber of athletes to win it all. A luxury Shoji has had very few times over the last 15 to 20 years.

Having Annie in the middle makes the Wahine a better team. Heck when she came back at left outside hitter the team became better. In the middle looks like another notch up. Sure the opponent last night was lacking, however looking at her physic and her play, reminds me a lot of Heather Bown.

Thus when the left OH hitter emerges and can show the steady play in that position this team will be hard to beat.

  92. Not an Expert October 1, 2016 7:43 am

Iosia, the freshman setter is going to get only better. As coach Shoji stated setting the middle on the height of the attack needs to be worked on. A thing an athlete like Iosia will get done as the season goes along. She is a difference maker at the setter position. No more controversy she is the real deal.

All Wahine, be humble, keep working hard and stay healthy.

  93. tako October 1, 2016 8:10 am

Great win. Still impressed with Smith as a DS when she gets in. She has happy feet and sets up well to receive ball. When both Nikki and Mitchem are on the court at the same time, they are force multipliers. Looks like Sibley is still improving so there’s lots of potential there. Love Noreen as a setter, she’s a steadying force.

Thought, Cal State F, played great defense; they picked up lots of balls and made hustle/effort plays. They’ll be tougher in their gym.

  94. tongo October 1, 2016 8:42 am

#91 Agree. In terms of physicality and skills, this team has the players. Granato has clearly stepped it up and Sibley is steadily improving. Will be interesting to see if Castillo goes back to OH and get regular playing time OH position. Casey can provide a big presence when the match up do not favor Granato or Sibley. Once Iosia sync up to everyone’s sweet spots, the team will rock. Got to give kudos to staff and team leaders as the team chemistry appears to be getting even stronger. Still believing Greeley will recover enough to play front row in post season. Meanwhile she is a stud in the back-court.

  95. rabbits ears October 1, 2016 9:18 am

Maglio didn’t serve last night to my surprise. She been one of our better servers.

  96. Cindy Luis October 1, 2016 11:47 am

    95. Maglio isn’t 100 percent. didn’t practice Saturday.
    no surprise she didn’t serve.

One reminder. Please pick a user name and stick with it.

as for the replay challenges: It is supposed to be used in the Big West this year as they try to improve the game. But some venues are not set up for it. Other than UH and I believe Long Beach State.

I have long found Shoji open to ideas from other coaches and programs. He really enjoyed being at the Olympics watching the international play.

anyway, new thread up for Saturday
