From last thread, apparently since the top two teams 1. Wisconsin and 2. Kansas State have already left, there will be no awards ceremony. Although they likely will announced the all-tournament team. Expecting Carlini to be named the MOP or MVP.

As for Arizona, sounds like Mau and Dahlke will be sharing playing time. Mau (shoulder) played sparingly Saturday, as did Pilepic who is expected to start on the right, broken finger and all.

Starting lineup
Iosia, Granato, Burnsin, Greeley, Kahakai, Sibley, Maglio

in case you missed scores from previous thread:

COMMENTS

  1. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:11 pm

not a great start for UH, their first three points came on UA errors (two service errors and Mau hitting long. Kill by Granato and another Mau hitting error has UH up 5-4. TO Arizona.

  2. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:17 pm

UH going to a 6-2 as Shoji hinted at last night. Higgins for Iosia. Koelsch in for Sibley.

  3. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:17 pm

Koelsch blocked. Shoji calls timeout. down 13-9

  4. Ashley August 28, 2016 5:18 pm

Arizona looks way better than Hawaii does.

  5. setaone August 28, 2016 5:21 pm

    Granato is struggling passing.

  6. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:23 pm

it’s not only Granato. Greeley is as well, passes very close to the net. TO UH down 17-10. They are very flat out there

  7. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:26 pm

Castillo now in for Burns after Burns tried to take a serve overhand and it was an ace.

  8. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:28 pm

    That was ugly. 25-15.

  9. setaone August 28, 2016 5:32 pm

one of the hitters needs to step up, there is only so much the libero and setters can do.

  10. PBnJz August 28, 2016 5:33 pm

Wow! I had every confidence our asst coaches could get our team ready while Dave was in Rio. I also strongly believed our backup players would step up their game this weekend to keep their beloved senior’s Final Four-bound season on track.
Wrong on all counts, I guess.

  11. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:34 pm

    UH up 5-0 TO Arizona

  12. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:41 pm

    10. i don’t know Even the best coaching can’t prevent some of the errors that are going on. Arizona up 10-9.

  13. Ashley August 28, 2016 5:41 pm

why shoji didn’t time out is beyond me.

  14. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:45 pm

    Arizona up 13-10. TO UH.

  15. Mytake August 28, 2016 5:45 pm

I knew coach not being at practices was going to bite the team in the butt one way or another. There’s no substitute for being there.

  16. z August 28, 2016 5:46 pm

    Still is.

  17. Bleachercoach August 28, 2016 5:52 pm

We just don’t have another hitter that can terminate like Nikki Taylor. Our othere OH are just average. Our girls lack awareness and speed on the court. They don’t seem like they have a very good movement on the court. The girls lack attacking over the block. We either too short or just not very good jumpers
Need to get tougher out there

  18. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:55 pm

Personally don’t think it made a difference.

  19. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:56 pm

Mau into the net, UH closes to 20-17. TO Arizona

  20. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 5:58 pm

IMHO, the problem is the number of players playing out of position. You don’t have a terminating hitter. Granato has power but is undersized. Koelsch is working very hard but she is not an opposite. Sibley is struggling. And the passing is off.

  21. H-Man August 28, 2016 6:00 pm

Maybe the Wahine just doesn’t have the players to match up. They’re awfully young and playing very seasoned teams.

  22. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:03 pm

That should have been another. delay on Arizona, a point and loss of serve. Shoji is not happy.
Finally got it right. UH has the serve.

  23. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:06 pm

    Mau ends it. 25-23

  24. hanawahine August 28, 2016 6:10 pm

Kalei Mau plays like a beast even though injured.

  25. warriorwahine August 28, 2016 6:12 pm

    24. i dunno. whatever happened to ‘difficult to defeat the bows?’ last year minnesota, this year k-state and now arizona!

  26. z August 28, 2016 6:18 pm

    No energy.

  27. PBnJz August 28, 2016 6:18 pm

I know we’ll still have a successful season, but this is disappointing. They can’t reach preseason expectations if we only have one dominant player we can rely on. I guess NT does pull a lot of attention which frees up the others to be successful…and that’s why we had so many positive contributors last yr in Greeley, Magill, Maglio, and Tai.

  28. Upchurch August 28, 2016 6:19 pm

I’m no volleyball expert but Hawaii just seems very soft. Kills don’t have any heat on them , and blocking non existent. Just seems like we have no pop in our jumps and hits. Is it conditioning or motivation? I don’t know, but Hawaii better solve it fast. Also noticed Arizona has one player playing with a broken finger on her hitting hand and Mau hitting with heat on an injured shoulder. Hawaii could use some of that grit! Go Wahine!!!!

  29. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:20 pm

Ross makes her debut. front line of Ross, Castillo and Granato.

  30. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:25 pm

Ross with two kills … and a net violations … and UH up 6-4. TO Arizona. Which also lost the challenge when looking for a touch.

  31. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:28 pm

Looks like they’ve given up on the 6-2

  32. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:31 pm

    UH up 12-6. TO Arizona.

  33. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:38 pm

Ross blocked Arizona pulls to 15-12. TO UH

  34. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:47 pm

Castillo with the kill. UH wins 25-18

  35. MGM August 28, 2016 6:53 pm

I can’t believe all the negative comments about the Wahine….You gotta remember that this team is like a new team with a heavy hitter Nikki Taylor out with an injury…of course they’re gonna struggle…Seems like y’all giving up on them…let them get it together and make some adjustments now that Shoji is back…Can’t expect the team to be 100% right now…it’s just the start of the season…SMH!!!

  36. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 6:55 pm

UH challenges Sibley’s hit being in. call overturned and it’s 2-2.

  37. PBnJz August 28, 2016 6:58 pm

Wow…like the spark these freshman are adding…Iosia, Smith and Ross! Go Wahine! You can do it! Believe!

  38. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:01 pm

UH challenging the no touch call

  39. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:02 pm

UH wins challenge Wahine up 9-8

  40. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:07 pm

UH up 15-13 at the TTO

  41. PBnJz August 28, 2016 7:08 pm

Did the boys give up and leave the blog tonite?

  42. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:11 pm

Granato with her 23rd kill, gives UH a 17-14 lead. TO Arizona

  43. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:15 pm

    38. don’t know who you’re talking about.

  44. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:18 pm

Granato ends it 25-19. on to Set 5

  45. PBnJz August 28, 2016 7:20 pm

    Usual commenters…quiet…

  46. hanawahine August 28, 2016 7:22 pm

This is better. Wahine valored up and is back to push it.

  47. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:25 pm

    Arizona up 3-0 TO UH

  48. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:29 pm

    Arizona up 6-1. TO UH

  49. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:30 pm

    42. i’m sure the negative will soon come back

  50. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:32 pm

Granato aced. it’s 8-2 at the changeover.

  51. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:33 pm

Sibley with a solid swing, UH closes to 8-4. TO Arizona

  52. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:35 pm

UH with four freshmen out there. Arizona called for the overlap. it’s 8-5

  53. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:41 pm

Hawaii with its first lead at 13-12. Granato with 32.

  54. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 7:45 pm

    Castillo ends it 15-13

  55. hanawahine August 28, 2016 7:45 pm

    and Rise of Na Wahine!

  56. z August 28, 2016 7:46 pm

    Amazing night for Granato.

  57. T103 August 28, 2016 7:47 pm

WOW! Dang I finally found the thread for this match. Didn’t get a chance to go to the game and shesh, I totally wrote them off early in the 5th set, I know I know, my bad, yee of little faith. So stoked for them, with all the ups & downs of this tournament, this is a awesome win, so glad they were able to pull this off, now we can move on to getting healthy and back to 100%. Congrats to Mckenna on her outstanding play tonight.

  58. kamaaina3261 August 28, 2016 7:48 pm

I admit I bailed out and went home after the 2nd set.

I didn’t recognize the Wahine team that won the game, showed grit, determination and McKenna Granato came of age tonight.

  59. Warriorfan August 28, 2016 7:50 pm

Ross was such an epic surprise
iosia just makes such poised sets and Granato wow I knew this is how she could play hope she keeps hitting smart like this from
Now on and against bigger blocks she won’t always face a 5’6 blocker like Snuka.

  60. Warriorfan August 28, 2016 7:51 pm

Also emma smith is gonna be such a great player , she makes great digs and plays and you can see her confidence building.

  61. HawaiiMongoose August 28, 2016 7:53 pm

Wow. Just, wow. T103, like you I kind of gave up, left the TV to do some chores when we fell behind 8-4 and then turned my attention back to the match and we had won! This was badly needed, so congratulations to the Wahine and especially Granato for her career performance and the freshmen who did such a great job tonight.

  62. Big Island VB fan August 28, 2016 7:55 pm

I wouldn’t blame anyone who bailed out on the team. Who would have thought that UH would make such an improbably comeback, down by 2-8 in the short and deciding fifth set? Seems like they had to have their backs against the wall to respond effectively. I honestly believed that Irene Nosia would bail out on the team next year without Nikki Taylor and Annie Mitchem. Hope she will decide to stay her entire career in UH.

  63. islandman August 28, 2016 7:57 pm

Ok, who said we don’t have another terminal hitter like Nikki.

  64. Rabbit ears August 28, 2016 7:58 pm

Congrats to the wahine. One question, surprised that mags continue to rotates in to the middle second. Luckily, it didn’t hurt them in game 5.

  65. warriorwahine August 28, 2016 8:03 pm

mckenna model R was daves ‘mobile reserves’ hidden in the woods and mckenna model G shows why she was an underarmor AA.

question why hadnt dave sent in mckenna ross yesterday for k state? a whole lot missing and a pyhrric victory.

  66. Maverick August 28, 2016 8:03 pm

    60. The folks who saw Granato hit for .051 over the first two matches of the season.

Good win but let’s not get too excited–Arizona was the weakest of UH’s opponents this weekend. Plus, UCLA is coming into town and if Nikki Taylor is out, then Granato will be the go to player. And she’ll have to deal with a much bigger block? Let’s see how she does against the Bruins before drawing conclusions.

  67. Big Island VB fan August 28, 2016 8:04 pm

So who made all tournament team? Would like to see Granato and Iosia in the list as they were instrumental in this victory. It would be maddening if no UH player made the list.

  68. Warriorfan August 28, 2016 8:08 pm

Van winden is out for the Bruins too, so Granato should be hitting against a much smaller Muno.

  69. Hot August 28, 2016 8:10 pm

Wow Granato hit over .400 with 30 plus kills! I’ve mentioned before that Ross would be used this season due to all injuries. I’m glad to see she delivered.

Ross, Burns and Iosia will only get better. I think everyone who was used contributed. I think Koelsch should be commended for working very hard to play that opposite spot. She kind of struggled tonight, but she was a factor against Kansas State. And she looks impressive when hitting. Castillo should get better too as the season goes on and if the coaches continue to give her time on the court. Anderson struggled a little bit with passing against Wisconsin, but she does bring a lot with her serve and defense. Guinasso also showed some quick reflexes against Wisconsin.

  70. tongo August 28, 2016 8:19 pm

Amazing – just amazing! This team showed such heart and passion! They fought hard but came up short against Wisconsin and Kansas. Tonight they could have folded but they didn’t and showed great passion.

Congrats to the four true freshmen, a red-shirted freshman, and couple sophomores.

While the first weekend results were to be expected with the key injuries and the high level of competition, how this team finished it is very encouraging. Well done!

  71. Maverick August 28, 2016 8:25 pm

    64. Muno is a DS/libero, so you probably meant someone else on UCLA’s roster. Overall, UCLA’s block will be a little bigger than Arizona’s, including a slightly taller setter than Snuka. Overall, a superior team that should be top 10 tomorrow. I think UH falls to somewhere in the 11-15 range in the next poll.

Also, I think UH still has a chance to host a subregional. If they get Nikki back this week and run the table, I can see the possibility of hosting. If UH loses to UCLA and Washington, then hosting is unlikely.

  72. islandman August 28, 2016 8:27 pm

Nikki will be back next match, Scott Robbs said last night. TV showed her warming up some during a timeout. Kahakai seemed to be digging a lot of shots.

  73. Maverick August 28, 2016 8:31 pm

    63. Per Cindy’s article on the newspaper website, only Kahakai from UH made the all-tourney team. Carlini was MOP.

  74. islandman August 28, 2016 8:37 pm

    ‏@OCSportsTV 46 minutes ago
Granato with 33 kills, the most since Emily Hartong had 33 at Long Beach State on Oct. 26, 2012. #HawaiiWVB

    …and Savanah Kahakai, 23 digs for a career night!!! #doingwork #HawaiiWVB

  75. Hot August 28, 2016 8:37 pm

Certainly a good night for the McKennas of the team!

  76. Warriorfan August 28, 2016 8:40 pm

muno was UCLA starting opposite against LMU yesterday.

  77. Ron August 28, 2016 8:49 pm

I would rather have Iosia than Carlini. She is special. I also gained more respect for Garnato, but she needs to go “high hands” more often and develop a slice shot. Over-all this freshmen class has a lot of potential. Castillo is starting to step it up and play where she is needed. P.S. Great coaching job by Dave and his staff.

  78. oneseason August 28, 2016 8:51 pm

Very nice complements from coach Shoji for the McKenna Ross in the post game interview. Considering the current injury situation, this season should be exciting. I hope UH aggressively bids to host.

  79. PBnJz August 28, 2016 8:56 pm

Congrats to our beloved team for the comeback win! Such grit! Special kudos that it took some frosh and other young/less experienced players to make it happen! And how ’bout our “old” coach…having the guts and wisdom to try out new peeps and give em the shot to come thru! They did! Also like seeing the very vocal coaching by Berg! She looked to be very encouraging, directional and insightful on that sideline!
    Go ‘Bows!

  80. Warriorfan August 28, 2016 8:56 pm

UH needs to go undefeated rest of the way to host and hope our opponents all have good seasons.

i think it’s possible if Nikki is back to 100 percent and had stellar senior year too bad we wont see mitchem till october.

  81. Mytake August 28, 2016 9:01 pm

Isn’t Ross a DS? Not sure how to feel about her playing at the net. that. Is it a glass half empty or half full?

  82. Maverick August 28, 2016 9:08 pm

    72. She may have started there, but she didn’t play that position for the match. She had one attempt, no blocks and 12 digs. Those are DS stats. Buechler, Andersen and Rogers took nearly all the OH swings. I think she was put there so she could be the first server for UCLA. LMU served to start the match.

  83. Bleachercoach August 28, 2016 9:09 pm

Not surprised with McKenna Ross..saw her during the scrimmage the other week and saw her great approach and quick swing for her stature…Totally happy that she got to show her stuff

  84. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 9:12 pm

Kalei Mau and Savanah Kahakai were named to the all-tournament team. Also honored were Wisconsin’s Lauren Carlini (Most Outstanding Player), Tionna Williams and Haleigh Nelson. Also from Kansas State Katie Brand and Brooke Sassin.

  85. Maverick August 28, 2016 9:14 pm

    81. Ross was an OH/Opp in high school, but at 5-10, undersized for UH, considering how tall the OHs are. Tonite it was a wrinkle that AZ couldn’t prepare for, so that helped. Not clear that she will see much more time at the net with Taylor coming back.

  86. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 9:15 pm

hard to keep up with the Nos. on the comments.
Yes, Ross is a DS. I was very surprised to see her play front row. But everyone considers her one of the most athletic players on the team. As Shoji said, good genes. Know we’ve talked about how her dad was two-sport at UH, played pro baseball, sister is Kyla Ross, gold medal gymnast from 2012, and aunt is former Wahine Nohea Tano

  87. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 9:17 pm

appreciate the posts about what OCSports said since we don’t hear the postgame. Shoji did say they hope to get Taylor back this week and that it would solve a lot of problems.
Using Ross on the left was a necessity. With Greeley unable to swing, they felt that Ross would give them some offense. Also that they kept Granato in for her back row attack.

  88. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 9:22 pm

Was most impressed with Kahakai, tying her career high with 23, nine in Set 5. Also thought Sibley took strong swings on those out-of-system balls.
There was one insane blind back bumpset by Iosia crosscourt to Sibley front left that Sibley took on the fly an put down, giving UH set point in Set 4.
Iosia has quite the sense of humor.

  89. Cindy Luis August 28, 2016 9:23 pm

The poll will be very different tomorrow with all the losses, including USC 0-3.
