10-21: Tuesday checkin, UCSB match changed to 4 p.m.

Team back in Gym 1, first full practice since last week
(my bad, they did have practice Saturday. Original post said Thurday)
Shoji also back from his recruiting trip.

Not in the gym: Nikki Taylor, sounds like she has a cold.

Magill cleared for light practice, she wasn’t in during the scrimmaging but did work with Wong during water breaks, dropping back a few steps and hitting balls that were more off the net. Shoji said they need to figure out a way to get her the ball more.

Kahakai looking like she’ll be ready to play Friday. Shoji said the libero position isn’t set in stone so may see Kahakai there over the weekend.

Shoji said they are seriously looking at the 6-2. Much depends on how the person who subs in for Higgins does. Against UCI it was Passi.

They’ll be without Manu-Olevao Sunday so might see more of the 6-2 then Asked about Huff on the left. He said she’s improving but not ready to play back row.

since magill is not operational, probably see more of maglio right? she did pretty decently vs the beach. not sure if its a good idea to add her to the lineup though because she might be digging balls that the libero should be digging (unless its her own) ;p

sounds like kahakai is motivated, there are balls to be dug that should of been dug. im sure she wasnt happy about the outcome of the trip.

lets see whos left, huff is useful for blocking providing some armor into the defense. passi can hit more into her heavy punch. and long can hit it high hands with high velocity swing.

    1. Maglio is the only option if Magill unable to play

  3. LC October 21, 2014 2:41 pm

No practice since Thursday ? Excuse me if I ask why Dave ?

It certainly couldn’t have anything to do with Ana because some of them were actually at the beach or out and about.

If you ask me practice is what they need a lot of.

As a fan I dumped UH football and basketball men and women long ago and I’m about to say Aloha to this program also. I’m just fed up with UH Athletics.

  4. LC October 21, 2014 2:58 pm

LOL a cold, more like I got this huge tat yesterday and it’s sore as hell.

  5. LC October 21, 2014 3:10 pm

Sunday match moved to 4pm is what I heard today.

  6. Cindy Luis October 21, 2014 3:58 pm

Yes, Sunday match moved to 4 p.m. Was just posting it.
    It’s to accommodate UCSB’s red=eye flight.

  7. Cindy Luis October 21, 2014 4:02 pm

    2. last week’s schedule was practices through Thursday, they were taking Friday off, flying to Molokai and scrimmage Saturday, flying back Sunday.
After they canceled the trip, they ended up having a practice Saturday on campus.
My mistake to say it was their first since Thursday. That was the last I could attend because I had a desk shift Saturday.
you do realize that the NCAA mandates days off for student-athletes?
Monday is the only day off they have this week.
As for Taylor, was told she was sick.

  8. Cubicle1126 October 21, 2014 4:41 pm

glad to see they might try the 6-2.

  9. oldtimer808 October 21, 2014 5:32 pm

Ok Aloha LC I’m sure we won’t miss you as a fan. This is not the first time the volleyball program struggles but in time will be better as our young players improve. As a fan, support the team not your own personal ego of thinking you know better mentality.

  10. Brandon October 21, 2014 5:32 pm

    I hope Magill can play

  11. Brandon October 21, 2014 5:34 pm

Cindy what are the chances, In your opinion, that Magill will play. Are they high or low

  12. haleiwacrossfitter October 21, 2014 6:50 pm

I wonder why he won’t try Huff on the right as part of the 6-2 over Passi? In the beginning of the season it was the chemistry with Huff on the floor that played better. She wasn’t a dominant hitter, but her blocking presence made a difference….and she didn’t do anything to hurt the team.

So, if she is not ready for the backrow, then get her on the right. I prefer her over Passi anyway. I just would hate to see Nikki be taken out and lose that right side back row attack that she brings.

  13. haleiwacrossfitter October 21, 2014 6:53 pm

And yes, we need Magill back in there for sure. But, I have confidence in Maglio on the floor as well. I love her energy and she played well in the spots she has been out there, and getting better.

I really think 2015 and 2016 are going to be great years. I also think Shoji will stick around for those years as well. They will have a legitimate chance at making a run for the championship.

  14. Cindy Luis October 21, 2014 9:08 pm

    11. she’s moving well so I think she’ll play. She’s not in a brace, just taped.

    12. Because they need an LS, especially on Sunday when Manu-Olevao isn’t playing.
Huff so rarely in the lineup. not sure what you’re basing your observation on.
Huff is still transitioning from being a middle. She is improving. She played some left before coming here. On the plus side, she is athletic with good instincts.
And not sure about your comment on losing Taylor on the right.
Taylor hits left once in the rotation. which means someone has to play on the right in that rotation. Passi and Koelsch have connected well so it makes sense to have Passi on the right with that sub.

  15. Brandon October 21, 2014 9:53 pm

I hope Dave plays the modified “6-2” with KENDRA in the front and higgins in the back, OR a true 6-2 with KENDRA playing all the way around

  16. haleiwacrossfitter October 21, 2014 10:13 pm

Cindy, what I was referring to about Huff on the right is when/if Dave goes to the 6-2. It’s the right side and setter that get switched out. So that is why I was referring to Huff on the right and Nikki being taken out because she is the “opposite” from the setter. So the 6-2 would mean Nikki and Taylor swapping out with Kendra and Passi/Huff. That is the traditional 6-2, so unless dave is thinking of a non-traditional 6-2 that is what would happen, hence to my comment about Nikki being taken out of the back row for Kendra.

And for Huff, my observation is that, while yes they were short periods of time, during the first few tournaments when Passi was starting and they were losing to Arizona St/Oregon/UCLA and Huff came in, her presence made a difference in the third games or re-energized comebacks in those games, albeit they still lost. Huff in the lineup showed better chemistry.

And, I don’t think the Kendra/Passi combo has been proven that much either. In the short periods that Huff has played, in my opinion, has out played Passi, who has been very inconsistent. I’m not ragging on Passi, so if that is how this is being taken, that’s not my intent. Just stating my opinion on who I think would make a better combo in the 6-2 lineup.

I really think this freshman class is outstanding and will really be the foundation of the next couple years. They have all impressed me at some point in this season, and I have just not been impressed with Passi yet. I really do hope that she does impress the crap out of me this weekend, because that would mean the wahine are building and being better….which is what this is all about.

  17. wildcard October 21, 2014 11:15 pm

    6. cindy whats that about “UCSB’s red=eye flight”?

hope the wahine come back way more impressive considering they had a bye week from a shoddy road trip. perhaps it should include some reserves brought in as if necessary like huff providing sturdy blocking and even some passi heavy punches or her jump serve to add to the attack.

  18. Cindy Luis October 22, 2014 6:32 am

    16. True the Passi-Koelsch combo rarely used but it was very effective in the UCI match, probably Passi’s kill turned Set 3 in the Wahine’s favor.
I don’t know if that’s going to be the true swap. As you say, that one time vs. UCI it meant Taylor being out. but they’re going to have to change the lineup Sunday. And they do like Koelsch right front for blocking.

    17. UCSB asked that it be scheduled earlier in order for them to make sure they get to the airport on time. I don’t have their itinerary so I don’t know their flight time. They asked UH if it could be at 4 p.m. to accommodate their flight and UH agreed. Not the first time it’s happened. There’s been a number of times that mainland teams are scrambling to get out of the arena to get to the airport in time if matches or basketball games take longer than expected.

  19. Brandon October 22, 2014 9:22 am

Cindy, If dave runs a true 6-2. do you think he will let kendra play all rotations? Or will that limit someone like nikki taylor, who plays opposite, from playing?

  20. M October 22, 2014 9:43 am

    Benchcoach.

It would help if people could were kept abreast.

Koelsch may be a Sand VB/WVB player yet she was recruited initially as a BEACH athlete.

Huge differences in knowing something about something.
    &
Where’s all the patience for our VB Hall of Fame coach?!

A long-range plan would surely be helpful.
    Just sayin’

  21. DCWahineFan October 22, 2014 10:45 am

the last time I saw them running a modified 6-2 was on the first road trip at the start of the BW conference play. Huff and Passi when they rotated to the front row were subbing in for the 2 setters. DS/L for the middles. the 3 reg outsides played all 6 rotations.

  22. LanaiBoy October 22, 2014 12:58 pm

Cindy. I notice that the UCSB match has been moved up to 4:00 p.m. from 5:00 p.m. Isn’t the Wahine basketball team was suppose to have a inter-squad scrimmage that evening too? What time is the basketball scrimmage supposed to start with the new starting time for the volleyball match?

  23. Cindy Luis October 22, 2014 3:43 pm

Basketball will happen after the volleyball match is done and they pull up the TeraFlex. so no set time. But don’t see it happening before 7

  24. Cindy Luis October 22, 2014 4:08 pm

    19. Don’t know. much depends on how long the set goes, how many subs they plan to use. If passing goes south, more DSs will be used.
