Tuesday checkin

Some randomness carried over from Monday
Gardner out for the season for ASU. Definitely a blow to the Sun Devils.

from VBF808:
Hawaii has 15 of the Top 30 attendances this year. Match vs Long Beach State was No.3 most attended behind match against UCLA at No.2 and Creighton vs Nebraska at No.1

From the Booster Club:
Hawaii has the highest ticket prices in the country and continues to be among the Top 2 in attendance
I don’t know if other schools allow their students in for free as UH does.
Interesting to note that Florida used to be among the attendance leaders when they let everyone in for free. It dropped dramatically when they began charging.

Until Hawaii starts averaging 8,000 (tickets) Nebraska will remain the attendance leader. They have sold out all of their matches starting in 2000, first when hosting in the Coliseum (4,030) and now the Devaney (7,900)

Hawaii 20, 15, 5
Nebraska 17, 15, 10
Washington 15, 10, 5
Minnesota 15, 10, 5
Texas 13, 11, 9, 7
Wichita State 8, 6
Penn State 8, 5
Northern Iowa 7.25
Wisconsin 7, 5
USC 7
Florida 4

Cindy, what do the numbers behind the schools mean? It’s not their ranking or RPI

  2. jimmy the lock October 13, 2015 8:47 am

Clue me in on the number patterns.

  3. jimmy the lock October 13, 2015 8:49 am

Let me go look for a Mensa thinking cap, be right back.

  4. greenthumb October 13, 2015 9:05 am

On those mystery numbers, looks like higher is better?

Thanks to posters for sharing your “away” stories yesterday. One of my fan faves was going to the afternoon Rainbow Classic years ago, sitting among fans for other teams. They were polite and they sure knew the game (basketball). They also took great pleasure in teaching our kids some special cheers. One of which one kid wrote about for a school assignment; said cheer generated a note home. :-0

  5. Maverick October 13, 2015 9:26 am

1,2,3,4. The numbers represent ticket prices to see a home volleyball match at the listed schools. Yes, $4 is a big deal in Gainesville.

  6. Ron October 13, 2015 9:35 am

My God Maverick, you have to do my taxes! Too bad I live on Maui.

  7. Todde October 13, 2015 9:44 am

I believe the first number is the price of adults over 18 years of age, the second number is for senior citizens, and the last number is children under 18 years of age. Correct me I am wrong, please.

  8. cruisecontrol October 13, 2015 9:53 am

Maybe varies depending on the school – lower level, upper level, seniors, students, etc?

  9. Hapaguy October 13, 2015 9:56 am

I just got back from the mainland and was able to attend the Hawaii UC Riverside match. Got in to LAX around 3ish got the rental car and drove to Riverside. Plenty of traffic (for a Saturday) on the freeway going in to Riverside. Thought we had plenty time so arrived at the UCR parking lot around 6:20pm. A guy walking out of the events center saw me and my buddy wearing our UH shirts and said to us “you better hurry because UH up 1-0 already”. What!? “I thought the game starts at 7pm?” “Nope they start at 6pm!” We enter the UCR arena to a sea of green as UH fans outnumbers UCR fans. Probably UCR’s largest attended match this year. The most memorable thing about this match was the adulation the Hawaii players received after the match in the lobby. Mobs of people all trying to get autographs and photos with the players especially Nikki Taylor. Club teams from around the area wearing their club t-shirts all in line to get photos with the Wahine players. UCR was having autograph night and were sitting at tables inside the arena with no one in line……

  10. KK October 13, 2015 10:20 am

So Florida goes from free admission to $4 and attendance drops dramatically? Sheesh!

  11. turfwar October 13, 2015 10:22 am

Ron that’s the first time I’ve ever heard anyone say “too bad I live on Maui”.

  12. turfwar October 13, 2015 10:29 am

Blunite if you look thru your stat sheet you will also notice something Dave did against LBSU that he hasn’t done all season and maybe has never done before. At least I can’t recall him ever doing. Setting the middle isn’t something that’s done every time a good pass is made. If you were at the game you would know what that was.

  13. Volleyman October 13, 2015 10:47 am

Is Gardner going to be allowed to medical redshirt?

  14. rage777 October 13, 2015 11:30 am

I’ve been to a few games at Fullerton, Irvine and LBSU. Only LBSU usually has more fans than UH. Although the student sections are louder than the subdued UH fans.

  15. turfwar October 13, 2015 12:31 pm

rage777 curious to know if you have been to any Pac12 school when the Wahine or men’s team have played there and what the crowd is like.

  16. Ki October 13, 2015 1:59 pm

    9. HG… That has got to be the saddest thing when your opponents get more attention during the autograph session than the home team.

  17. vballfreak808 October 13, 2015 2:36 pm

    13. She has played in too many matches to request for a medical redshirt sadly. She was a great player, but at least she got to play in Hawaii for two years of her college career.

  18. ALLAN October 13, 2015 4:02 pm

I BET A LOTTA NEBRASKA TKTS ARE FREE TO BOOST THEIR ATTENDANCE RECORDS.

  19. doug October 13, 2015 4:18 pm

    guess 18 don’t listen!

  20. Beauston October 13, 2015 4:40 pm

    RE:Nebraska Atendance Record

Has anyone figured out what else to do in Nebraska? Of course their tix has sold out. They have a good team and with nothing else to do, why not.

  21. Maverick October 13, 2015 6:13 pm

    20. You can husk corn.

  22. Russ October 13, 2015 6:33 pm

Hapaguy. Thanks for sharing your experience at the UC Riverside match. Great to hear the Wahine have support there.
I remember a few more stories about Nebraska volleyball fans. Went to the 2000 Final Four in Richmond Virginia (Nebraska, Wisconsin, Hawaii and USC, the Wahine lost to Nebraska in the semi-final 3-1). My friend is an AVCA member so she invited us to the All-America Banquet on Friday. We were not in good spirits because the Wahine had just lost to Nebraska in the Thurday night semi-final. The National Player of the Year is announced at the banquet and it was surprisingly Greichaly Cepero, sophomore setter from Nebraska. She mentioned how awesome the Nebraska fans are and had an amusing story. She was suspended for a match her freshmen year so as part of the punishment she had to take water out on the court for the team before the pregame warm up. When she took the water containers out to the court, the Nebraska fans at the Coliseum stood up and gave her a standing ovation. The fans thought the team was coming out for the warm up but it was just her taking the water onto the court. She mentioned how embarrassed she was but also how much she loved the dedicated Nebraska fans for always cheering and supporting the team.
Went to the 2002 Final Four in New Orleans (USC, Stanford, Hawaii and Florida). That year the Wahine were the 6th seed in the tournament and in the Lincoln Nebraska Regional hosted by #3 seed Nebraska. In the regional final the Wahine defeated Nebraska 3-1 with Kim and Lilly getting 25 kills each. The Wahine ended Nebraska’s 63 match home winning streak. I wasn’t able to go to the regional final in Lincoln, but went to the Final Four. Before the semi-final match vs Stanford (Wahine lost 3-0) I saw many Nebraska fans there with their red shirts. I mentioned to my brother-in-law that Nebraska fans probably had bought seats to the Final four anticipating that the Huskers would be there, and that they are probably not happy that the Wahine beat them. When the Wahine team ran out onto the court for the pregame warm up we were shocked to see most of the Nebraska fans there stand up and cheer for our Wahine. What is going on? The cheering from the Nebraska fans was louder than the cheering from the Hawaii fans. We were so amazed by this that we went over to a group of the Nebraska fans to thank them. They said that they were disappointed that the Huskers didn’t get to New Orleans, but that Hawaii did a great job winning the Lincoln regional so they were now supporting Hawaii. Wow, amazing good sportsmanship. Will never forget that moment when the Nebraska fans cheered for our Wahine at the New Orleans final four.
Sorry for the long stories, but I wanted to share some of the things that i thought were interesting.
Great win against Long Beach State. I just got to watch it on YouTube today.

  23. haleiwacrossfitter October 13, 2015 7:04 pm

Russ….you and your Nebraska fan stories are really making it hard for me to hate Nebraska volleyball!!! Haha. 🙂

But seriously (how’s that for a tv plug), I know their fans, for the most part are great. Its just the coaching staff and the arrogance that they have that drive me bonkers! And when Saleaumua decommited from Hawaii and went to Nebraksa and she had some interesting negative comments regarding Hawaii and the coaches, just really made me start cheering and hating Nebraska volleyball. I was pretty stinking happy when in 2005 Nebraska lost to Washingon for the NC and she left that school without a NC title. I was pretty happy back then. Anyway…onward. enough about my dislike towards Nebraska and Saleaumua.

I think our Wahine can beat the Huskers this year!!! 🙂

  24. z October 13, 2015 7:06 pm

I remember when the Nebraska football team came. I sat among some of their fans and agree with how nice they are.

  25. darkfire October 13, 2015 7:12 pm

    9. Hapa, That was a good story about the Wahine @ UCR, but a sad one for them at the end of the game. You’d think their booster club was savvy enough to make sure that some people at least attended their autograph signing. How embarrassing and sad. But, that is the devotion that is Wahine Volleyball on the mainland. It reminds me of the Great Food Truck Race on Food Network when the Hawaii truck “Aloha” attracted all the Hawaiian/Polynesian transplants on the mainland. And we’re talking coast to coast. That’s how they won the race! Anywayz, enough babbling…GO BOWS!

  26. Todde October 13, 2015 7:13 pm

Russ, what wonderful stories. Thanks for sharing it with us. Nice break from the usual comment. Any more stories? LOL

  27. darkfire October 13, 2015 7:18 pm

    22. Russ, Great stories! Please keep posting them! It is so refreshing to read the humanity behind the sport instead of the criticism and arguing that proliferate some blogs. Stay healthy Wahine!

  28. nomu October 13, 2015 7:51 pm

Hapaguy and Russ, thanks for sharing your stories. Really enjoyed reading it, felt like you were there yourself experiencing the moment. For me, I remember being impressed at how UCR celebrated winning every point. So some of the things that stood out for me in your stories is how great people can be, which translates to awesome fan support, and the impact and difference players can make. Likewise, as a fan sitting in the stands, or watching player’s post game interviews, it’s great to see teammates always being positive and supporting each other.

  29. tongo October 13, 2015 8:01 pm

#9 Thanks for sharing about the happening at the autograph session at the UC Riverside match. I was so happy for our ladies to receive so much support especially for Kalei but it was so heartbreaking to read. I feel terrible for the Highlanders ladies. However, it is so true about wahine volleyball team fans in the mainland.

Looking forward to the Long Beach match, where a ton of wahine fans will be shouting “let’s go bows” to the total dismay and looks of consternation from the surrounding Beach fans.

  30. tongo October 13, 2015 8:33 pm

#22 Remember when Nebraska came out to Maui for 2012 Spring Exhibition match and Cook mentioned that he was really impressed when he saw the wahine fans standing in lines couple hours before the match started. Nebraska said that “the fans here in Hawaii reminds us a lot of Nebraska”. Hartong & Co. lost 4-0 to Mancuso & Co.

  31. noblesol October 13, 2015 8:44 pm

Have lots of family in Lincoln. All transplanted there. A sports crazy town is an understatement. Had to laugh though about the not much else to do for those not into sports other than shuck corn; funny because it rings a bit true.

  32. rapid October 13, 2015 8:54 pm

magnificent stories from those who have told.

    9. bet you were kicking yourself in the head for being lost in hawai’i time lol

  33. Don October 13, 2015 8:56 pm

With all the love for Nebraska fans, why is it sooo hard for them to play/schedule a REAL match here?? They’ve only come for Spring Matches or their sand team comes…

  34. tongo October 13, 2015 9:04 pm

#15 Not exactly what you were looking for – but we went to the 2009 NCAA Regional Finals at Stanford where UH played Michigan State, who had upset Stanford the night before. So presuming that Cardinal fans had bought tickets for both matches, and decided to attend the finals even though the Cardinal lost, the vast majority of the Cardinal fans in the near capacity arena were pro-wahine. It was incredible at match point when it looked and felt like we were at Stanley.

  35. Todde October 13, 2015 9:40 pm

More, More, I am enjoying these stories….

  36. Brandon October 14, 2015 1:05 am

Don, same thing can be said about hawaii..

Why don’t we go to nebraska?

  37. frings October 14, 2015 8:08 am

I remember going to the UH/Nebraska game at the Termite Palace in 1972(?) when I was an undergrad. Their fans were loud, arrogant and pushy. And WE (the student section) got reprimanded for throwing the attitude back in their faces. Of course it also included some alcohol induced tossing of items at them as they walked past our cheering section. But hey…we had Golden Richards to cheer for.

  38. Cindy Luis October 14, 2015 8:59 am

Thanks for all the help yesterday. apologies for not being clearer about the prices and numbers.
Was off yesterday and took a break from the computer.
    Only top 25 score Tuesday
    21) Colorado State def. Wyoming 25-21, 25-19, 25-9

    couple of things.
Yes, apparently 18 isn’t reading and isn’t heeding a request not to use ALL CAPS

KK: that was a number of years ago. There attendance is quite good now.
    34. it was Michigan, not Michigan State.

and have mentioned before, just because UH might want a team on the schedule, doesn’t mean that team will come. It took a perfect storm for Florida to get out here.

Guess the easy answer is: UH doesn’t travel much nonconference because 1. they need the money they get from a home match, and 2. they might barely break when traveling for a match. They did go for a single match at Nebraska in 07. If I remember correctly they got $10,000 from Nebraska.. lost money and lost the match. Travel was ridiculous I believe. something like leave Friday, get there Saturday, play Sunday, back home Monday.

  39. connor October 14, 2015 9:16 am

haleiwacrossfitter October 13, 2015 at 7:04 pm when Saleaumua decommited from Hawaii and went to Nebraksa and she had some interesting negative comments regarding Hawaii and the coaches…

Karma is a ditch. Not that Saleaumua has the players to succeed or resources to recruit but maybe she’s re-learning life’s basic lessons, especially those involving patience & humility. Her 2-yr record as HC at Southwestern CC 5-29.

  43. haleiwacrossfitter October 14, 2015 10:24 am

I would looooove this team to travel during the preseason. I want to see them play the Penn St., Stanfords, Nebraska, Texas, etc on a yearly basis. And I think if they were willing to travel there more often, they would. It would increase our RPI and hosting by a great deal every year, especially if we can win most or even some of them.

However, with the athletic department constantly in the red, it won’t happen. They need to be home as much as possible to make a profit. It’s the disadvantage of not being in the Power 5 conferences. It’s really sad and unfortunate that the college athletic scene has come down to the Power 5 conferences and the RPI….one big freaking monopoly. It’s really, really sad.

  44. frings October 14, 2015 10:46 am

#43. As I have said before (and I think in prior threads), a shrewd attorney representing the mid majors and smalls could build quite a compelling and I believe winning case against the NCAA for collusion and violation of federal anti trust and restraint of trade laws.

  45. tongo October 14, 2015 11:25 am

#44 Forbes Magazine Article about “The Most Valuable Conferences in College Sports 2014”, has Power 5 Conf. (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) earning $1.1 B annually from network contracts – and post season and tournament bowl revenues of $311M. Most recently, the NCAA gave the Power 5 additional autonomy after the Power 5 threaten to leave.
You got to give Dave Shoji and Brian G. credit for staying committed to Mid Majors like HI and Long Beach when they had offers to go to Power 5 schools and likely double their salary.

  46. tako October 14, 2015 1:03 pm

JMHO: In spite of where we are, we have a team that can challenge for a National Championship this year and possibly the next. The program speaks for itself. Really can’t control the benefits of the Power 5 conferences no matter how much we “wish,” it is, what it is. Got to give credit to the head coach, gosh, he has new Associate Head Coach and the team is still rolling high numbers. Supposedly, can’t sign any of the top tier recruits, but, with what he has, develops these players to play with the best, currently ranked 8th; not bad for a mid major, facing daunting obstacles. Dunno about you folks but think our WAHINE are ICHIBAN or NO KA OI. The attendance numbers speak for themselves… Hana Hou…

  47. darkfire October 14, 2015 1:18 pm

    46. tako, Totally agree, dude! Doesn’t matter what language, Wahine No Ka Oi! Numero uno! Uber alles! Ichiban! Tres Bien!

GO BOWS! Can’t wait till Friday. Having withdrawals already for November, lol!

  48. OrbitalRipZ October 14, 2015 1:54 pm

    From the WHO CARES Department:

2 NCAA D-1 Women’s VB teams still have a shot at having a PERFECT SEASON
and should remain unbeaten when this weekend ends.

18-0 USC hosts ASU/10-16 and Arizona/10-18 … Sun Devils, picked to finish #2 in the Pac-12 (preseason coaches’ poll), saw a season-ending torn ACL to its star player Macey Gardner (during the same week she was named National POW) and with that injury saw its dream of stopping USC probably also come to an end. An ASU without Gardner is like “Dance Moms” without star Abby Lee Miller.

17-0 Kansas plays @ Baylor (13-5) 10-14/today. Should be a sweep. Next week will be reality check for the Jayhawks: hosts Oklahoma/10-21 then visits Texas/10-23.

Aside: One of the teams I am watching is Ohio State (16-2), which was picked to finish 8th in the Big Ten (preseason coaches’ poll), but thus far has won 5 out of the 6 conference matches it has played against conference foes (including wins over Nebraska, Wisconsin, Illinois but a 2-3 loss to Minn). Ohio St’s frosh OH
Audra Appold was just named espnW National POW.

As Ohio St is #7 and Hawai’i is #8 in the AVCA Coaches Poll, for UH to move up Ohio St has to lose to its next foe Purdue/10-16 (picked to finish 7th in the preseason poll) or Indiana/10-18 (picked 12th) movement among the 1-6 places in the AVCA Poll this week.
