Hawaii volleyball player Nikki Taylor was named the AVCA national player of the week on Sept. 15. She averaged 4.75 kills, 2.25 digs, 1.33 blocks and 0.75 aces per set to help the Rainbow Wahine beat San Diego State, Eastern Washington and No. 2 Florida.

Noteworthy is the wording in the NCAA announcement: “AVCA DI Player of the Week: Hawaii rightside hitter Nikki Taylor”. The writer said “rightside” hitter, not “outside hitter.” Why is this noteworthy? Because Hawaii was known (40 yrs) to be a “left-side” oriented team; indeed, many programs are still left-side oriented. In truth, Hawaii is in the vanguard of schools helping to define the changing state of women’s volleyball.
