Search committee named

The search committee for the UH-Manoa athletic director’s post was announced this morning:

John Dean (Central Pacific Bank President), David Erickson (UH faculty representative), Elizabeth Ignacio (MD, IMUA Orthopedics, assistant professor John A Burns Medical School)), Marilyn Moniz-Kahoohanohano (UH assistant athletic director), Amanda Paterson (UH athletics director of compliance), Allen Uyeda (retired CEO First Insurance), Kelley Withy (MD, professor at John A Burns Medical School).

The job will be posted Jan. 14 and Manoa chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman said a new AD will be selected by “no later than mid-year.”

I don’t know about you, but I still find that timeline preposterous.

Are these sports people? Or just influential people with no sports background?

  2. Superstar Advertiser January 13, 2015 11:09 am

Just people looking for an extra paycheck from the state.

  3. Luki January 13, 2015 11:40 am

Dunno Dave, is an AD at UH really an important potion anymore? Seems any big time decision or policy change goes through other people before it gets the rubber stamp approval of the AD. Maybe that’s why it doesn’t generate any intrest from solid canidates. Like the 5 rumored guys in the running, would throw Takai in the mix too if he wasn’t just elecTed to Washington. UH still trying to make it in the 21st century doing things in the 20th century style…Duh?

  4. hatakeman January 13, 2015 11:55 am

From reading the SA article, the committee is comprised of 8 members. Five are from various aspects of the university, two of whom are from within the athletic department. The two are Marilyn Moniz-Kaho’ohanohano, a former Wahine volleyball player (1972-75) and current assistant athletic director and Amanda Peterson, Director of Compliance/Eligibility. And I agree with you Dave, the timeline is preposterous. Maybe the committee will surprise us.

  5. Derek January 13, 2015 12:18 pm

The tmeline is ridiculous. No sense of urgency. Most of the committee don’t know beans about athletics or sports. I would think Dave Shoji should have been on the committee, or Jim Leahey and/or Chris McLaughlin and if Rick Blangiardi wasn’t interested he should have been on the committee too. You have to have a football guy on the committee because football drives the engine. How about Dick Tomey on the committee? It’s really sickening.

  6. Deflated January 13, 2015 12:23 pm

Very disappointed with the whole process….”search committee”, this is the same type of “committee” that found us Herman Failure and Ben “no stay” Jay.

How about putting people on this committee that actually know about what an AD looks like. Not a bean counter…..we need to have someone at AD who isn’t afraid to buck the trend, thinks out of the box, and has the local contacts to promote fundraising…

If it ain’t Amemiya or Blangiardi on the short list I’m not interested.

  7. Dave Reardon January 13, 2015 2:04 pm

Yes, I asked if Tomey, Wagner or Shoji were asked (McLachlin would be good, too). I was told there would be no comment on how the committee was built. Another strike against transparency.

  8. hitman January 13, 2015 2:44 pm

what a joke this turning out to be !! does any them know how much yards the football field has? and if you say uprights half them getting glove and lub !! lmao
should be one or two person from student body ,act AD,one from coaching, STEPHEN TSAI for sports reportors and John Dean (Central Pacific Bank President), David Erickson (UH faculty representative), Elizabeth Ignacio (MD, IMUA Orthopedics,

UH Manoa has lost a lot of the public’s confidence. And it loos like they will lose more than they think they have already lost. If this was 70s again, I’d put Checkers and Pogo on the list

  10. Former UH Athlete January 13, 2015 3:13 pm

Ah…. no more than 6 months to determine our future resigning for family reasons Athletic Director.

Is this the same compliance person who created the firestorm around the MBB program over an iPad?

  11. Keepitreal January 13, 2015 4:56 pm

Unbelievable!!! The bureaucracy triumphs again. This is a very bad joke. Seriously think this is beginning of end for UH D1 athletics. If this is proposed plan then just why prolong the pain. Just come out and say no more athletics. At least BYUH had the guts to tell the truth. If I was any of the candidates you mentioned I wouldn’t touch this job with a ten foot pole. Actions like this are not even worthy of Mid major. Bob Hogue, get ready for you next Pac West member. Did I mention what a JOKE this is? Stunningly poor management. Run Benjy. And ever other coach on staff. Get out now before this ship goes under

John Dean is a well respected banker who has turned around several banks including CPB. Probably should have had some sports people on it. The Chancellor’s pronouncement that the next AD has to be able to fit several roles is encouraging: community person, build business partnerships, etc. I would add needs to be able to lobby the Legislature, be strong and respected enough to fend off Regents who want to meddle and fire coaches (this has happened recently), have stature with other ADs in the conference, know how to raise money, know how to get projects funded and constructed, knows how to take a department that runs deficits and turn it around, etc. The only person on the list mentioned yesterday by Dave that fulfills all this is the new Mufi. He saved the Pro Bowl and when the City was going bankrupt and didn’t have money to fix the sewers (remember 48 million gallons of raw sewage in Waikiki?), he came up with a plan and money to rebuild the sewers. He is a former college athlete and knows the local ways, unlike Frazier and Ben Jay. The new ADs first order of business is to have enough body bags in stock to bring back the football players after playing Ohio State and Wisconsin next year; that was Ben Jay’s plan to cut the deficit; two $ 1 million pay days in exchange for broken bodies returning home.

Just confirms my opinion that Vroman should not even be the “Interim” Chancellor. With the exception of Moniz-Kahoohanohano, not one of these people have any kind of knowledge of the inner working of UH athletics and what it’s going to take to make this work. No Dick Tomey who would have had a great deal of knowledge to share and what about Rockne Freitas.

#9 Big Island Lava…you’re right about putting Checkers & Pogo on the Board; it’s being led by Bozo the Clown

By the way fellow Warrior Fans, just read today on FootballScoop.com that Wisconsin has retained Dave Aranda as the DC …AND… one Daronte’ Jones is headed for Madison to become their DB coach. Hopefully he’ll teach the Badger secondary how to defend like he’s taught Ne’Quan Phillips…remember those 3 TD’s he got burnt on vs Utah State with a true freshman QB…

    11. Just heard that a football assist is leaving to go to Wisconsin. Going to a bigger and better program to join another former UH coach.

  16. Keepitreal January 13, 2015 7:54 pm

Smart move to Wisconsin. They will actually have a program in the future. And chancellor brilliant comments on ideal candidate. Should add skilled at turning out the lights cuz no one is coming up with the dough to continue to compete. Same old same old. Champagne taste on a beer income

  17. oldyobo January 13, 2015 8:26 pm

I’m for anyone who can figure out how to rid of Chow asap.

  18. Keepitreal January 13, 2015 8:40 pm

    No mo football=No mo Chow

  19. hon2255 January 13, 2015 9:15 pm

So Dave, we have bankers, insurance , women’s ath director who would report to the ath director (she shouldn’t be on the committee) , a team doctor , hmmm, the compliance officer , what the heck is Vroman doing?? The guy has no clue. I nominate myself as a taxpayer and UH grad , to do a better job in getting this process concluded. Cheeez, No Tomey, No Shoji , what is going on here. ?? Hello , Chancellor , Earth to Chancellor, please move it on the selections.

  20. Dave Reardon January 13, 2015 9:25 pm

I more I thought about it, the more I think Norm Chow is the most glaring omission from the committee. I explain why in tomorrow’s column.

  21. kev-1 January 13, 2015 9:59 pm

So disappointing that UH admin continues to do stuff like this. This search committee may be more unqualified than the last. Do real schools with real athletic departments do the same thing?

  22. kev-1 January 13, 2015 10:11 pm

btw . . . anyone see Ben Jay since he announced his future resignation? He’s still on the dollar but seems to have disappeared. Or have I just not seen him? He seemed to be way more visible.

  23. David January 14, 2015 12:20 am

@kev-1, BJ even deleted his precious Twitter account! Let’s hope he stays down for the count and is kicked out early to boot. He’s worse than a lame duck, he’s a lame duck with a vendetta against UH and the sooner he’s gone, the better.

  24. Annoddah Dave January 14, 2015 7:45 am

@#22 Saw BJ at last UH BB game pressing flesh. He is usually at UH athletic events.

John Dean is not a graduate of UH and his only connection appears to be his expertise in financial management. Allen Uyeda I don’t think is a UH graduate, he is from the mainland. His expertise is in insurance management. The rest appear to have some direct connection to UH either as a graduate or employee.

  25. Former UH Athlete January 14, 2015 7:57 am

I will be expecting to see Central Pacific Bank as a new top Diamond level corporate sponsor and fresh paid advertising around the Stan Sheriff Center in the near future for John Dean being tabbed to be on the search committee.

I’m not sure why Dave Shoji, probably the most respected coach that UH has, doesn’t have a role in the selection process.

Norm Chow not being on the selection committee pretty much shows the writing on the wall on his future unless he pulls off what McMackin did in 2010 and earn an extra year.

It makes sense that the FB coach be on an AD search committee because FB is almost always the financially important sport in any athletic department that has football. Although I’m not sure how often the FB coach is included in a search committee for an AD because often times, the AD and FB coach are linked together in their hiring and subsequent firing (or in UH’s case, “retirements” and “resign for family reasons”). If an AD makes bad FB coach hire, he’s often fired because of that hire if it doesn’t work out.

Me just cannot understand….how all these so called ‘smart’ people …. can even accept a position like this.

If these people were in charge to get a committee together for their particular business…would they go out n get 80% sport coaches on their committee ?
With all do respect to there experience an their expertise in their field now.

Seems to me….their egos must be really inflated…

Not saying has to be really 100% sport minded…but should have some sports experience…as the daily stuff can be done by the assistants….etc….but by gosh…why not have sumone…at least one with a marketing degree…to ask the tough questions…on how they intent to turn our losing ‘culture’ around up there…at least for football…?

At least they have ‘shut-up’ the negative blabber motor-mouth up there…that should translate into a few more wins this year on the football field…thank god 4 that….

And his/her first duty should be….to get our past football coaches that are available…to be Honorary Captains for our first home game…n give then honor n recognition they deserve…Price…Tomey…Wags…JJ….ALL WITH A SPECIAL JERSEY…be a nice gesture n honorable to honor them for all they did…under at best….difficult conditions…plus I am sure bring out a few more fans….

  27. Former UH Athlete January 14, 2015 8:09 am

    22. The blame goes to UH administration for allowing BJ to stay on the job through June. He’s essentially on paid vacation until June. I don’t think Lassner or Bley-Vroman are letting him make any major decisions anymore.

It’s a total waste of time/money and is probably going to cost UH in the long run because they refused to just fire him and send him packing. All UH needs to do in the interim is appoint an “interim AD” to handle decisions. The AD is still suppose to be setting future athletic schedules along with all his other duties, but BJ has no incentive and now less authority to do anything.

In the near future… UH’s handling of the AD situation could be another bullet to the foot with the MBB program and “acting” HC Benjy Taylor. Benjy, in spite of his personal financial issues, has earned the public’s trust to remove the “active” label and become THE head coach of MBB. At this time, UH has not done anything to secure or promote Benjy’s contract status. With the MBB team playing well above expectations after all the turmoil, and Benjy winning a major mid-season Coaching Award, you can be certain other schools will be taking a run at Benjy to take him away. Promoting Benjy’s status and salary will solve his financial issues and more importantly maintain stability with the program. Benjy was instrumental in keeping several players from transferring when Arnold was suddenly let go. If Benjy leaves or is stolen away by another program, I think the MBB team will fall apart and UH will see many more players seek to transfer out.

  28. Former UH Athlete January 14, 2015 8:10 am

I believe Benjy is still getting paid an assistant level salary, which is not very high.

  29. kev-1 January 14, 2015 8:42 am

I’m also pretty disappointed that UH football is losing Daronte Jones. There goes one of our experienced coaches. I am just waiting to read that Chow has promoted some grad assistant to take his place.

  30. kev-1 January 14, 2015 8:45 am

Former UH . . . I listened to Coach Taylor on the radio yesterday and was pretty impressed with some of what he was saying. He described the team as “naïve” in the sense that they don’t go into games with the attitude that they can’t win. They are young and naïve enough to think they can beat anyone they meet on the court, which is a good thing.

He also talked about the culture he has tried to instill that the players don’t really care who starts because they all know they’ll see time. He says this has created a family environment where competition is high and they have each other’s backs. No diva mentality. I like it.

I don’t think offering him a contract as an HC now would be wise. I’d like to see how they do in conference as games get more important. BUT, I do think he should get a pay bump to HC type pay for the season.

  31. Dave Reardon January 18, 2015 10:58 am

Benjy Taylor got a bump in pay to around $190,000 when he was named acting head coach.
