UHFB: If it takes a village, here’s a starting point
Dara Young has University of Hawaii football season tickets for seats that she never sits in. That’s because she’s working — in the Aloha Stadium press box, as the official scorer on the statistics crew.
“More than half my life, started doing it as a student,” she said.
She also donates to Na Koa, the football booster club. But with recent focus on UH athletics’ budgetary woes, Young has decided to do more. She is also donating her entire season’s pay for her work on the stat crew back to the football team.
“It’s just a couple of hundred dollars, but maybe they can put it to use for something,” she said.
I asked Dara if she wanted to challenge anyone else to make a similar donation.
“How about just inspiration for other fans to do something? Whatever they can afford to do,” she answered. “I mean, what about all those hoarders donating their bottles of water to the team for practice? Can be anything like that.”
oh, oh. duffer, now we in trouble.
How do we donate without funds getting to (or being diverted by) upper campus for something else?

Living on the Big Island, I am now an official member of Nakoa. I have subscribed to PPV. We, on the outer Islands, have only the TV, to see the product.

Donating to Na Koa is simple and fast. You get a receipt for your donation almost immediately…..we can be part of the solution….a long term fix is necessary and some of the currnet arrangements are absurd, i.e. Stadium, bookstore merchandise etc.

Until they get this ship up righted I’m not giving them diddly squat. UH is like a bad stock you don’t keep throwing money at it you dump it.
Glad to see Last Call understands the situation. Look, if you got extra money and love only UH football, go right ahead and give them all your money.
But there are other options, or “stocks” if you will. UH needs to realize this. A lot of people do not NEED UH football. There’s a ton of other games on the TV, all day. I don’t need to set aside a specific time (what is it nowadays, 2pm-9pm?) to get my football fix. I don’t need to build my life around football, I can live my life and take in football when I like.
So seeing as how UH football is not giving an on demand feature, they need to be better. Are they better? Is it worth giving up my time, driving through traffic, paying for parking, paying for overpriced soda water and sawdust dogs, sitting in the sun? Look at the other options. And not just football.
UH better start appreciating its fans.
UH made a mistake to put its football games behind a wall (that wall being PPV). All they did was put it out of sight, and out of mind. Maybe we can get them to stop making these mistakes.
BTW, how old is the average Na Koa booster club member? Remember, these fans won’t be around forever. How is UH growing their younger fan base, with such expensive prices? Laughable, how serious business it is to be a Real UH fan. Now you gotta buy stadium tickets and the PPV. For a sub-.500 team with a safe, boring offense and safe, boring defense.
Donating to Na Koa is very fast and simple. Thanks Last Call, everyone’s entitled to their opinions, but the more people who are part of the solution, the better. man eating apple, if you would like member demographics of Na Koa, I’m sure we can provide that. Did you know there are 5 women who are part of the Na Koa board? It’s NOT the Old Boys’ Club of the past.
I believe people who “have” should think beyond themselves and donate to causes they deem worthy, but it is always their choice when, how much and for what reasons … And you all know, or should know, I am not a UH sports booster.
With that being said, in the case of UH sports at this time, I think the stock analogy can be turned on its head … If you are a UH sports fan you can buy low now and enjoy the dividends when it rebounds … while it won’t be rewards in a monetary sense, it will be in the feeling that you helped out your team when it really needed your help. …. Maybe you view it as a trash penny stock that will never be worth anything? Well, that’s your prerogative … I just feel badly for fans who have lost all of their hope, because that is a key element of being a fan.
Why would anyone who does not care about UH football even bother to read about it…..simple so they can satisfy some desire to be negative and derogatory.
