Pitt stop
That really happened, right?
It all came together for the Hawaii men’s basketball team 24 hours ago. Ball movement was crisp. Just about everyone who played contributed. Negus Webster-Chan busted out of his slump and was lights out early. Stefan Jovanovic looked like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with his sky hooks. Mike Thomas, Aaron Valdes, Isaac Fleming and Garrett Nevels finished it off. Hawaii held on to defeat Pittsburgh 74-70 at rocking War Memorial Gymnasium.
UH (4-1) looked nothing like the team that fell to High Point in a series of ill-advised shots down the stretch.
It was a stunning defeat for former UH assistant Jamie Dixon and Pitt, which heads into the EA Sports Maui Invitational starting Monday.
Adding to the mystique of the game, it was not televised or streamed.
Credit UH coach Benjy Taylor. His all-zone strategy worked, and his gambit of not practicing Thursday night led to an energetic performance.
The Rainbow Warriors can feel good about themselves heading into a long day or so of travel Saturday night and Sunday morning en route to the Gulf Coast Showcase in southern Florida.
Here are some more shots from the game.
Talk this one up, people. Even slightly casual NCAA b-ball fans know Pitt as no slouch. I don’t care if the excuse runs along how Pitt might’ve “had too many Maui Mai Tais.” This is a great win. But, it might’ve gotten slightly lost with the great high school State Championship and, quite possibly, THE best surprising win in UH football history (when UH won on the road against Nevada in the June Jones 12-0 season might be a close second).
And . . . continues this, admittedly, surprising Warrior b-ball romp and run.
Do you know why Fleming played only one minute and none today ? Was it because of something he did in the USF and Marist games ?
