Leland Green commits

Hawaii broke the winter ice for its all-important first commitment of the spring.

UH has a lot of potential holes to fill in its roster for 2016-17, so the Rainbow Warriors getting it today — a week removed from the end of their NCAA Tournament run — was encouraging.

Redondo Union High shooting guard Leland Green pledged himself to Eran Ganot and UH on Sunday.

After Josh Gershon broke it on Twitter, Green affirmed his decision with the Star-Advertiser on Sunday night.

“I felt like it was a great opportunity for me to go out there and actually commit to go to the school,” Green said. “I felt like coaching staff was very good … I felt like they’ll help me become a better player and a better person.”

Here was the quick breaking on him.

Green has courage, committing site unseen.

“I’ve never been to Hawaii before, but I’m looking forward to going out there and checking it out,” he said.

He knows UH signee Drew Buggs well through the Earl Watson Elite AAU program, as well as going head to head in high school ball.

“Oh, I mean two of the top guards on the West Coast,” said Ryan Silver, co-founder of the EWE program. “Two very physical, athletic, tough, grimy guards. I think two guards that should be able to compete right away in the Big West.
“Both come from high school programs with winning pedigrees. Long Beach Poly, a top 10 program in the state, and Redondo Union with (coach) Reggie Morris, who’s had numerous guards go on to play in the NBA.”

Silver said Green holds to the mold that UH has recruited since Ganot took over the program last April.

“Coach Ganot will only recruit guys that are high character kids, high character families,” he said. “That’s something that he really, really stresses. Leland’s a tremendous kid, great family … he’ll fit right in with the culture that Coach is building at Hawaii.”

More on him in Monday’s print edition.

In the meantime, here’s some YouTube clips of Green with both Redondo Union and Earl Watson Elite.

I’m hoping we can now score on Kavaughn Scott next. That would be a pretty nice recruiting class.

Guy looks like a real stud, quick and smooth player who has a college level physical build already (looks like a Tom Henderson type with strenght and speed), slick outside shooter (slightly odd release but what the heck, it works), good ball handling, skilled driver to the basket with good body control and timing on his moves, pretty good hops, sound like a high character kid by description (also looks humble on the court, not cocky despite his talent), looks like he played in a pretty competitive league with good athletes, for me so far, Ganot is recruiting well, gotta believe the NCAA appearance helped, now needs to get some good bigs.

Nice to see another shooter added to roster. Especially since it is possible that Drew Buggs may need to redshirt after his surgery. Like the comments about high character individuals. Looking forward to next season already

If Nevada(2 games), UC-Irvine, and UC-Santa Barbara all win, Hawaii can boast about beating the CBI, CIT, and Vegas 16 champs.

Caught a little of the NJIT/Columbia game the other day.

It reminded me of Hawaii’s last CIT game against Air Force.

Absolutely no post-season vibe at all.

UConn women reminded me of the robots from “The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan’s Island”.

They look a little more human today.

Glad to see this addition to the Warriors. High character, hard worker, good skills, and playing experience with Drew as an added bonus. Welcome Leland!
