Hardware for Ganot; More to come?

First-year Hawaii coach Eran Ganot was up for some hardware in Houston during his trip to the Final Four. So far, he’s 1-for-1.

Ganot received the Red Auerbach National Coach of the Year award from the Jewish Coaches Association, beating out five other finalists from various levels of college coaching. He was one of two D-I coaches in the field, along with Akron’s Keith Dambrot.

Red Auerbach Award (Nation’s Top Jewish Coach) Finalists
Keith Dambrot, Akron
Steve DeMeo, Northwest Florida State College
Eran Ganot, Hawaii
Ryan Marks, St. Francis
Bob Pietrack, Fort Lewis College
Josh Schertz, Lincoln Memorial

The 34-year-old Big West Coach of the Year is also up for three awards from CollegeInsider.com, all set to be handed out Monday at a banquet: The Jim Phelan Award (Overall top D-I coach); the Hugh Durham Award (Top Mid-Major coach); and the Joe B. Hall Award (Top rookie D-I coach).

If you’ll recall, interim coach Benjy Taylor received the midseason Hugh Durham Award last season, but he did not receive the postseason award.

Since Stefan Jankovic‘s pro announcement on Wednesday, things have been quiet from the other Rainbow Warriors juniors.

You can’t fault the guys for taking their time. It’s a big decision for Aaron Valdes, Mike Thomas and Stefan Jovanovic.

Plus, as much as everyone would like to know where they stand, there’s not exactly a deadline on this thing.

There hasn’t been an official announcement from UH yet, but last I heard the team banquet is slated for May 4. They might need a bigger ballroom than usual.

UPDATE: The banquet date is confirmed for May 4. Site still TBA.

Forgot to add this initially, but Hawaii 5-O stalwart Zach Buscher got some love from TheOdysseyOnline.com.

It was a source of amusement for many.

Congrats Coach Ganot! You have exemplified what excellence in leadership can do for a basketball team, its university, and the entire state. Hawai’i is blessed to have you.

Congratulations but thank god the people who boycotted the Oscar didn’t see this.

Congratulations Eran and Laura, you make Hawaii proud. There was Rick Pitino, Jamie Dixon, etc…, and now Eran Ganot and Laura Beeman. Some day you may wistfully look back on the salad days of your coaching careers and smile (where your wings to stardom began.) Hawaii continues to be fertile ground for young coaches, who aspire to reach greatness.

Coach Beeman needs to recruit that transcendent player, most likely an international player, who would choose Hawaii over a mid-major. Soon, hopefully not in the near-future, she will grow restless with making the tournament, only to bow out in the first round. With men’s basketball, you could say that Hawaii, at least, has a 1-5% chance of making a deep run in the NCAAs. With women’s basketball, circumstances being the life of a low mid-major, that percentage is zero. Thanks to Megan Huff, Hawaii kept the margin of defeat respectable. Huff looks like the only player on the current roster that a high major may want on their roster. I have high expectations for her next season. I think she could be Big West Player of the Year.

I wish Long Beach State point guard Anna “Schooled by a Korean” Lee would transfer to Hawaii.

I would love to see women’s basketball adopt a style similar to football, which is to split the Division I teams into a FBS and FCS system. Felt so bad for Robert Morris, being behind by thirty-seven points after ten minutes.

    The genius of Vince Goo?

When Hawaii faced a Diana Taurasi-led Huskies team, the 2002 Na Wahine team lost only by seven points. 60-53.

And can somebody explain to me why Hawaiian Tel cable couldn’t televise the UCLA/Hawaii game?

I read a Bleacher Report article that speculates North Carolina will escape with only a one-year post-season ban.

    Fake African-American classes = I-Pad.

I will be yelling my head off after every Villanova basket today.

    PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, WIN!!!!

I absolutely loathe ESPN for protecting North Carolina.

Out of respect for the late-Stuart Scott, the network is hesitant to bust out the pitchforks. People like Vitale, and Digger, they’re friends with Roy Williams, so there is an obvious conflict of interest.

With every passing year, Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous” is turning into the modern era’s “Network”(directed by Sidney Lumet), in terms of relevance, with regards to journalism.

“Don’t make friends with the rock stars.”

    No truer words.

    Hawaii has no friends.

Nobody in the mainstream media is looking after Hawaii’s best interests.
