Midnight madness is alive and well in the Stan Sheriff Center.

The latest “Black-out” ESPN Tip-off Marathon contest, starting at 11:15 p.m., is on ESPN2 against Florida Atlantic of Conference USA. Kanoa Leahey is on the call.

Because Texas State spanked SIU-Edwardsville 86-58 in the first game of the day, Hawaii has a chance to win the Rainbow Classic title by virtue of a three-way tiebreaker — if they can get past FAU. There would be three teams (Hawaii, TXST and SIUE) at 2-1, all having beaten one of the other. The tiebreaker is by fewest points allowed. According to UH, the magic number is 52 or fewer points. So, that’s a pretty tough ask, though not impossible.

The Owls shot 33.3 percent in both previous Rainbow games. They have size — their frontcourt goes 7-0 and 6-10 — but little in the way of shooting ability.

UH is favored by six over FAU, which is coached by former NBA player Michael Curry, who is of no relation to Stephen Curry and his family.

Former coach Riley Wallace is in the house tonight. Credit to the 75-year-old winningest UH coach for toughing it out for the late tipoff.

The Rainbow Warriors are the only team to have participated in all nine years of the Tip-off Marathon. They are 5-3 in those games, including a win over Nevada last year.

As a side note, UH forward Jack Purchase knows FAU’s starting center, 7-foot Ronald Delph. Delph, like Purchase, is a transfer from Auburn. They only overlapped for a summer before Delph’s departure but Purchase said they were good friends over that brief period.

Nice write-up. Great that Riley Wallace was at the game. Good memories.
