Canda misfortune

If you have not yet seen it in our subscriber content, Hawaii hoops recruit Bryce Canda did not gain admission into UH Manoa for the fall semester, we reported in Wednesday’s paper.

There is a possibility — though it doesn’t seem particularly likely — Canda could latch on with the team at a later time, if he completes another course independently. He said on Tuesday he was hoping to get in at the semester break.

Regardless, the Central Wyoming College transfer won’t be around as the team comes together during preseason practices and gets into the thick of what coach Eran Ganot wants to drill.

This is an unfortunate turn of events for Ganot and the Rainbow Warriors, who have a solid group returning from last season’s 22-win team — but not many new players to turn to for added depth now.

Ganot finalized the addition of freshman point guard Sheriff Drammeh a few days ago, easing the sting of the Canda loss a bit. But Canda — who worked out with the team over the summer — seemed ready to contribute right away, while Drammeh is something of a question mark.

Sai Tummala, a graduate student from Arizona State, is expected to make an impact at forward in his one season of eligibility. Jack Purchase, an Auburn transfer, is redshirting this season.

It’s them and the returning ‘Bows — most notably Roderick Bobbitt, Aaron Valdes, Stefan Jankovic and Isaac Fleming. So the cupboard is far from bare; there’s no reason to panic because of the Canda loss. It just would have been nice to add another dynamic guard to the fold — especially one with Canda’s 40-percent-plus shooting ability from long range.

On the positive side, word is that team performance analyst Jamie Smith will be around for the coming season. Smith was hoping to stick around on Ganot’s staff and endured through the changeover of the last couple of months.

This is great news for people who bought into his sometimes-eccentric themed game nights. But he’ll have a good deal of other responsibilities as well.

There’s a good chance Smith, basically the director of operations, won’t be allowed in the gym during practices for the coming season as part of UH’s self-sanctions to the NCAA.

Not a great start for coach Ganot. He will really need to match last year’s record to avoid questions like “what if Benjy?” Still think he was the right choice but he is not making it easy on himself with Parrish leaving and now Canda ineligible. Never a dull moment

    Mr. Cando => Mr. Can’tdo.
Improbable to maintain a 2.3 GPA for two years anyway!

Already starting to have reservations about Ganot; already two bad picks. Now if he can coach what’s left from a winning team and put up some impressive wins, that will be something to get my attention.

For Eran, even the most Ardent, Fervent fans, pulling for him since last fall to get MBB job.. they have to Wake up and look at Reality.. Brian you talk about the core. of guys from last year, which is good.. the self imposed sanction and loss of scholarhisp, what irritate Eran no end not HAVING a Doba on board around the gym, sure, he is ticked about that..,. No OFFICIAL signed contract, The Battle of Gib vs UH vs NCAA. where, it looks 99 1\2 % certain, Gib is goind to Win Huge against UH and ncaa, maybe more restitution, and starting next season his and Benjy’ jobs back.. that is why Gib and Benjy so calm.. They got UH admin, political shibai hacks. and Powers.. hamstrung.. those lolos will soon be out of a job.

Welcome to the MESS that is UH MBB Eran, and only getting worse, if UH can wih 17 games before the BWC towney.. Eran for coach of the year. I don’ like how powers pulled in Eran, ass backawards into HC job.. however . stupid UH admi and Power Chancellors, presidents. and booster, BOOSTERS>. UH going to go through hard times with NINE count em NINE guards.. and maybe 4 bigs, if they don’ t get hurt..

Eran look for walkons 6’4’to 6’6 inch, who can shoot the ball and defend.. lot of ex military enrolled at UH.. he should have about half a dozen fit that mold.. eran at least invite them..

Did we miss or did Ms. Amand Paterson miss something that is an NCAA violtion?
Can a guy not qualified for admittance to UH manoa fall session, with No AS degree , in tow, enter UH summer school and practice with coaches and team under NCAA guidelines.. Is it PONO

And here comes poorboy. That didn’t take long. As I said, not an auspicious start for new head coach

Almost forgot about the Gib battle with UH and NCAA. More worried about team. And still no schedule yet. Coach needs to be a bit more visible and vocal to let people know what is happening. No need to share every little thing that goes on but also no need keep everything so close to the vest. As DR writes, EG going through a learning curve that is steeper than he and others thought, myself included.

Ignore Poor boy aka uH Fanz on Warrior insider This blogger constantly spews rumors baseless with the sole intent of destroying our program what’s left after the Gib Arnold violations and to bring Gib back to the program. The blogger is delusional and doesn’t seem to accept reality. Needs to see a shrink.
