Video: ‘Bows all business on Day 1

Organized. Disciplined. Efficient.

Those were some of the words that came to mind Friday watching Eran Ganot’s first official practice as a Division I head coach.

The Rainbows stretched out for the long journey ahead.

The Rainbow Warriors made the most of the three-hour session in the Stan Sheriff Center. UH had to be patient to figure out when it could get into the arena, but once it did it had the benefit of a cleared-out lower bowl with extra baskets set up. The Los Angeles Lakers have used the Sheriff for their training camp.

A few of the Lakers stayed to watch for a little while, including point guard Jordan Clarkson, who was a teammate of Stefan Jankovic briefly at Missouri before Jankovic decided to transfer to UH. Jankovic was shooting down at the other end of the court.

Lakers forward Julius Randle, video coordinator J.J. Outlaw and point guard Jordan Clarkson stayed to watch the first portion of UH practice.

As I wrote in today’s premium edition story, Roderick Bobbitt was the only player unable to practice. Ganot called him “day to day.” We’ll see if he does anything in today’s second practice, this time in Klum Gym (edit: they went to Gym 2 instead).

It was clear Ganot and the two assistants who’ve been here all summer, Chris Acker and Adam Jacobsen, were on the same page in running the session. Acker and Jacobsen were both very vocal and took the lead on different aspects of practice. The recently hired third assistant, John Montgomery, could very well be vocal too, once he gets acclimated.

And refs were brought in for a fullcourt 5-on-5 scrimmage — something I haven’t seen on Day 1 since I’ve been covering this beat.

Referees were brought in on Day 1 for an intrasquad scrimmage.

It added up to an impressive first showing by Ganot and Co. Can they keep it going through the lengthy preseason?

Garrett Nevels has latched on with Spanish club Albacete in the EBA league … which has an absolute ton of teams. However, it’s not the same classification as Isaac Fotu’s CAI Zaragoza.

Congrats to Nevels, who was named the Drew League’s Most Inspirational Player in August. He had a pro’s mentality and hard-nosed approach to the game for the duration of his UH career.
