Sorry that the set win streak is over, but at least Solbrig kept his serve in so he didn’t lose it for the team. Let’s hope that the team will gut it out and win this match for the sake of the seniors.
Streak is over so what? At least I don’t have to hear Leahy say it 10 times before pausing for air.
On a more serious note. The Warriors have already proven the caliber of their play this year. At some point, streak have just become, just that. But that gut check feeling and how they rose above that feeling towards the end of the 3rd set will do them good heading into the 49ers match.
That set loss sure lit a fire under the Bows. Now they are playing with gusto. Go, go, go and get those Gauchos good and hard!
So glad that UH managed to beat the Gauchos and give the seniors a glorious send-off.
As for Long Beach next week. let’s hope for at least a split on the road. Perhaps the Warriors could win the first night after a long and hard struggle, but Long Beach will be highly motivated to win on senior night. Rather then than in the Big West tournament. Even a split on the road would still give UH the #1 ranking in the Big West.
Like they said, the end of a set-win streak took the monkey off their back. Perhaps an end to the match-win streak next week would do the same and steady out their nerves for the Big West Tournament. I agree with the conclusions of 9 and 11. You set me straight.
I don’t like the way the set streak ended. Chavers was crossing the line all during this series and the R1 was too weak to call it. I hope he doesn’t come back for the BW tourney. He’s a high school level ref at best. That game suits his speed of observation better.
For inquiring minds:
Regarding the Big West tournament, UH earns the #1 seed so long as it either sweeps or splits the two-match series with LBSU, regardless of sets won. In a split situation, the worst case scenario for UH is to lose 3-0 and win 3-2, which gives UH 2 more set losses than LBSU. Currently, LBSU has lost 4 sets in conference play versus 1 for UH (3 set advantage for the Warriors), so UH will have no worse than a 1 set advantage over LBSU in a split situation. If LBSU sweeps the two matches, UH will be seeded #2.

15. Thanks for clarifying the wins needed with Long Beach. So the Bows can cement their #1 position if they can win in five sets the first night in Long Beach. Then they can relax. In fact, I’d much rather see the Bows eke out a solitary win on the first night rather than the second night which would spoil the Beach’s senior night and make them so mad that they’d seek the ultimate revenge at the Big West Tournament. Of course, no one wants to lose, but better next Saturday than the Big West Championship where any loss could spell the end of the season.
16. In your example, any kind of win by UH (3-0, 3-1, or 3-2) will give them the top seed in the BW tournament. I used 3-2 as a worst case scenario to prove that a series split is all UH needs for the #1 seed, regardless of the set scores.
this is such a nice thread. i am a long beach fan (but have very high respect for the amazing talent of uh even from last year; shoutout to rado and stijn) but the comments here are so matter-of-fact and positive. am looking forward to friday’s game, and hopefully saturday’s too. i’ve seen the beach play a couple of times already, and am really excited to watch the warriors play live. if only hawaii was much closer to los angeles, i would have been part of the crowd last weekend. just wishful thinking, would there be some kind of meet and greet for the warriors this weekend?
