Game Night: ‘Bows vs. 49ers
It’s game night with fourth-seeded UH and No. 5 Long Beach State meeting in the opening round of the Big West tournament.
The Rainbow Warriors are at ease in Orange County with this being their 10th day on the road. With their final regular-season game against Cal State Fullerton, the ‘Bows did not even have to change hotels. Eran Ganot said it was one of the rare Sundays on the road not spent in an airport or on an airplane. On Monday night, the players attended the Clippers-Celtics game. (Side note: former UH football player Marco Johnson‘s daughter is a spirit dancer for the Clippers. Also, former UH coach Gib Arnold, who scouts for the Celtics, attended the game.)
The ‘Bows practiced at Hope International yesterday, and were scheduled for a morning shoot-around today at the Honda Center.
This will be the third meeting between the teams. The ‘Bows swept the home-and-home series. Once again, the ‘Bows are concerned about:
> The 49ers’ knack for drawing fouls
> The inside game featuring Temidayo Yussuf and Mason Riggins
> And Deishuan Boooker, who is averaging 23.3 points against Big West opponents, with 153 of his 373 points — 41 percent — coming on free throws. By the way, he knocks down free throws at 92.7 percent.
The 49ers are concerned because:
> The ‘Bows have a terrific outside game, led by Jack Purchase and Eddie Stansberry
> The ‘Bows have a better bench
> And Brocke Stepteau is a more accurate free-throw shooter than Booker.
From yesterday’s pep rally:
Best of luck to the Bows’!
Great Pics. Thanks ST. Go Bows !!!
Would be cool if the band plays the Battlestar Galactica theme here 🤗.

Man, why can’t our own hotels looksnjust as nice. Clean. Youngo to hotels here, you got tons of people walking around, tour buses ALL the time. Ala Wai nearby. Yuck. Just chaos at times.
And we’re supposed to be a vacation destination!!!
Gib Arnold should be investigated for his time at USC.
What a ridiculous statement “It was a combination of things,” said Dan Meisenzahl…” It wasn’t a parking problem, it was a scheduling problem. Play the baseball game in the afternoon.
#4 Tons of people walking around and tour buses all the time? Hello!!!!!…. tourism is the lifeblood of our economy. Without tourism, we will be a third world state. We don’t produce enough stuff here to be dependent on anything except tourism.
Also The BW conference will not put up teams in the slum hotels. The conference probably was able to work out a good deal with some of the hotels in the area for rooms for the participating teams. If you wanna see some slum hotels in Anaheim, go cruising around there some time. You will see a bunch of motels/hotels that you wouldn’t want your dog to be in.
BTW…when UH brings teams over to play, UH put them up in nice hotels too. Sometimes the Sheraton, Sometimes Outrigger, Marriott or even Hilton so UH being headquartered in a nice hotel should not be all that shocking.
Stephen may I make a suggestion? Less pictures of the players, more pictures of the Rainbow Dancers. If that’s true about those free throw percentages that is terrific. Steph Curry has “only” a 90 percent lifetime percentage from the line.
The homeless problem is growing so how about more funding by the state and private donors to that area instead of athletics? There is only a limited amount of funds to spread around.
The funds have to be used efficiently though.
Even if Hawaii upgraded their schedule, the NCAA would still snub Hawaii. It’s the conference tournament or bust.
Belmont is 26-5. They finished first in the Ohio Valley. But they lost to Murray State in the conference final. They played a decent slate of non-conference teams. But according to Joe Lunardi, they are among the First Four Out.
The RPI is used as a tool and excuse to keep the Power 5 conferences in charge.
Sheraton! Hilton! Outrigger! WTF! They should be put in pup tents at Keehi Lagoon Park.
I agree wholeheartedly with #8 Manoa Mist – and second his motion! Et tu Stephen?
Dang Hawaii’s doing horrible of dealing with the full court pressure.
Play Hemsley.
Everybody lost a minute of their lives when Raimo missed that lay-up.
UH recruits Alberts and Maxhuni take stupid shots.
I know Raimo made the two to tie. But why take a chance. Dunk it, right?
Oh well.. Just like last year.. Choke at the end
Well, I’m headed off to the Pali Lookout. You can find me at the bottom of the valley.
The full court defense won it for them.
I’m going to miss Brock Stepteau.
The game in which Shamberger’s foot was on the out-of-bounds line was worse.
So was the game in which Jeff Portnoy had me convinced that Bill Amis tied the game to put them into overtime at the buzzer.
Two players, I won’t name who, when they get the ball, seem afraid to dribble.
I hugged my dog. He hurt his left hind leg. To see that game in person would have been horrifying. I had to buy him an orthopedic mattress, to go along with his foam pillow and five blankets.
Just a game.
C’mon, Coach Beeman and team!
Yo my post disappeared into thin air brah, Am I being banned or something?
is there such as thing as knowing how to win?
This team choked BIG in this game. More so than against UCI. This team’s big issue has been choking leads at the worse time possible. Coach Ganot’s gotta take a BIG direction heading into the off-season because even with the major improvements, they still can’t play consistently. They make themselves look like the Game 7 Rockets, in which they also choked miserably against Golden State last year without Chris Paul.
This program’s been taking a big step backwards and it hasn’t helped the fans much that this team is sinking. 3 straight times in a row, they get eliminated at the quarterfinals and 5 times overall since joining the BWC, have they not got past the first round. Seriously, when you’re playing in the post-season in the tournament, I don’t care what seed you’re in, whether you’re the top or the bottom, you gotta turn it up and be ready to bring it. I mean, I get it, we’re not the Mountain West, Big East, ACC, or any of the tough conferences, but come ONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! >:(
Why can’t we STEP UP?! Especially after last year, where we split all of our conference matches. It makes me feel ashamed to represent a sports program where we can’t be consistent. This program has gotta come to its senses because from the looks of things next year, CSUN, UCI and UCSB will pretty much be the big bullies of the conference, and we’re taking a big step backward.
This loss was puzzling. Blowing a big lead may be attributed to a mental letdown, combined with coaching.
Consistently inconsistent. Same now as beginning of year. Coach has to feel some heat because he is being out recruited. No shooters, sometimes defense, on and off free throws. Four out one in needs four who can do damage. Sad to say but creeping uneasiness about coach Ganot’s long term prospects. Believe next year gonna be about job security
Not a rabid basketball follower, but perhaps increasing the COA stipend at UH from its current $1000 could play a factor in attracting more talented student-athletes in all sports from the Continent, South Pacific, Asia, etc. Nevada’s COA is $4800, while Boise State’s is $5000. Just my 2 cents.
SDSU gets moving on its new stadium:
https://thedailyaztec.com/93419/news/university-announces-250-million-contract-for-new-stadium/
Ouch! Just realized Ganot extended through 2022-23 season so looking at thre more years of frustration unless recruiting improves dramatically. Look around the BW and see the number of impact freshman. Would like to see at least one recruit make immediate contribution. Maybe just wishful thinking
The team needs to add more excitement and athleticism to the team. Guys like Bobbitt or Valdez that could take over a game and get momentum going. We dont have that now.
They also need to improve strength and conditioning to get these kids more physically comparable to their competition. Just look at how our players physically compare to other players in the conference. And I’m not just talking about height. Our bigs need to bulk up to be more effective.
It’s really disappointing that UH basketball can’t seem to get over the hump.
Congrats to the Wahine!
LETS GO BOWS! LETS GO BOWS!
UH’s bigs are not very athletic. Need to get more hops with the bigs. Pathetic
I think it’s time to move on from Ganot. He’s a decent coach but he can’t recruit worth a lick. Middle of the pack in the Big West every year is pretty sad.
Who should we get? Rick Pitino?
The ultimate/possibly provacative UH homecoming . . .
Tony Tuioti wasting no time on recruiting St. Louis for Nebraska. Offered Gilman and McKenzie.
33
As Dr. Evil would say, “How about no?”
We don’t need another Gib Arnold problem here. We already got hit from the NCAA already from that program. Last thing we need is a second problem with a coach involved with NCAA issues.
I like Ganot.
What is there to like about Ganot? Seriously? He had one good season with gib’s and benjy’s recruits and everyone thought he was the man.
Well looks like his true colors are coming out and he’s being exposed. Are we going to renew his contract after 2 more disappointing seasons? Because at this rate that’s the direction we’re headed right?
Let’s be realistic and hope Ganot is successful in signing a “dynamic” (his words, according to Stephen’s story) guard and forward to complement Villa. His contract runs through April 2023, so he’ll be here for a while. I like him, too.
I don’t know but we need to keep coach Beeman around.. She can coach regular players and make them believe they have a chance
CHOKE!!!!!
2x
Wahine will get a bid to the WNIT. Although they haven’t gotten past the 1st round in several previous chances in the past few years.
Choke is kind of harsh. UC-Davis has a go-to player. Hawaii put up 29 and 40 this season. I was waiting for the run. It was just a matter of time. It came later than I thought. Choke, if you want to micro-size that term to one juncture, I will concede that they missed a chance to extend their double-digit lead in the first quarter with a lot of missed shots near the basket.
Coach Beeman got her players ready to play. Tia Kanoa and Leah Salanoa almost got it done.
All-Tournament Team
Jordan Sanders, UC Irvine
Channon Fluker, CSUN
Leah Salanoa, Hawai’i
Tia Kanoa, Hawai’i
Cierra Hall, UC Davis
Morgan Bertsch, UC Davis (MVP)
If Hawaii made the field of 64, they would probably be a #16 seed, and sent to the West Regional to face Mississippi State.
Women’s basketball should really look into splitting Division I into a FBS and FCS system. If you’re Hawaii, what are you playing for anyway? To get blown out by 50+ points? That may be a bit hyperbolic, but they’re not going to pull off an upset against a SEC team. I know they gave UCLA a good quarter, but how would I know? My cable provider couldn’t even bother to make the game available for me to watch. The WNIT is the better option.
Keep Coach Beeman and Coach Ganot.
It is not easy to win here.
Ganot needs to gooo!!!! Can’t recruit and dosen’t have other coaches players to help him look good;True colors of players, coach, and AD are showing……Garbage!!!!!! 18 point lead….How??????
I feel bad for Jamie Dixon. I want Pittsburgh to pay for not appreciating the job he did. The story of his sister as the Army head coach always gets to me. That’s why I can even root for TCU with their sketchy football program. But it’s important that Belmont made the field of 68. 26-5 with a loss to Murray State, who could get to the Sweet Sixteen with their potential lottery pick, has got to be more deserving of a shot than the 7th place Big 12 finisher.
WNIT !!!
RE: #47
I cannot agree with you more. How can teams like Oklahoma (19-13, conf. 7-11) and Ohio State (19-14, conf. 8-12) make the tournament. But snub a team like Furman (25-7, conf. 13-5), who beat teams like Loyola Chicago and then #8 Villanova at their own place. Yes, the same Villanova that won the natty last year and won the Big East this year. 🤷🏽♂️
It was x and o’s that lost the UH basketball game vs LBSU. They did not know how to break the press. Looked unprepared for it.
seewhy: Finishing .500 in your conference should be a prerequisite.
Hawaii once played Abilene Christian when they were a DII program. Abilene Christian are both in the men’s and women’s tournaments. I don’t know what they spend on athletics, but I suspect it’s more than Hawaii.
Don’t blame the coaches, so much. It’s the infrastructure.
I blame “Ferd” Lewis for contributing to the “no can” and narrow-minded culture.
Ed Orgeron’s raise is more than Rolo’s annual salary. It will never be a level playing field.
Agree with Old School Dave #27 and cappie the dog #51,
Fix the issues that hamper UH recruiting first:
1. Raise the COA stipend at UH to match other schools in our conference.
2. Revise entry requirements for UH recruits seeking to come to UH. Do we really need all students to complete Algebra II to earn a degree at UH?
#54 – I don’t disagree with increasing the COA stipends, but show me the $1 million to pay for it.
#55 burro – The easiest way is increase tax revenues, not by increasing taxes for residents, but by allowing an increase in taxable revenue in Hawaii.
The State Legislature recently rejected the legalization of marijuana, they simply decriminalized possession, one step closer, but no cigar. It will eventually become legal one day. Use the taxes on marijuana sales to help lower the use of meth and ice in Hawaii.
A State Lottery would also increase tax revenue. Use the increase in taxable revenue to benefit the State’s education fund, which would include UH Athletics.
Allow Hawaiian Homelands to operate casinos on their land that would increase tax revenues. It would also help to increase tourism to Hawaii. Use that taxable increase to help pay for the new stadium.
Maybe the Manoa campus should be moved to Kapolei. Satisfy all of the residents living around there. Make the space into a big dog park.
WWF: Great ideas! Problem is that out of the box thinking makes UH, State Administrators and politicians nervous. Too much extra work, no can go home at 5:00, cuts into existing Kuleanas in place.
Need AD’s that can homalimali to get some money donors. Have not seen a big donor, except for long time ago Clarence Ching. I think our AD has got to step up his game (my opinion). Cant be a top tier athletic program with all A students and outstanding citizens. Also you got to increase student stipends. Also, can anyone in the athletic dept. hob nob with money guys in town like June Jones used to back in the day. Do we have any coaches that play decent golf? By the way Is the Waterhouse group still a donor to UH athletics?
