Warrior Beat: Thomas goes to Azusa Pacific
UH graduate assistant Jake Thomas is headed to Azusa Pacific to coach.
Jake Thomas, who worked with the offensive line as a graduate assistant, is returning to his alma mater — Azusa Pacific — as the offensive line coach. Thomas is a former APU offensive lineman and assistant.
“Jake is a great pickup,” said APU head coach Victor Santa Cruz, a former UH linebacker. “He played O-line for us. He got his coaching break at Azusa. We appreciate all he’s been able to learn at Hawaii.”
UH coach Nick Rolovich said landing a full-time coaching job is one of the reasons graduate assistants and interns “put in the hard work.”

Jesse Sapolu’s son …
Fresno State has hired Roman Sapolu as assistant offensive line coach. Sapolu, the son of former San Francisco 49ers lineman Jesse Sapolu, was at Idaho State last season working with an offense that ranked sixth in the FCS in total offense and 14th in scoring.
suckabooya: You use the word “horrible” to describe the Big West. I’m more tactful. I describe it as “mediocre”. I am going to use your language for a change. Hawaii must play in a horrible conference to be only down only 11 at the half.

If Ganot is still coaching here for another three years I’m convinced he will have buried the men’s program completely. The average attendance income will fall below what it cost to hire the student helpers making the 2 million deficit look like the good old days.

After Zigmars three point play, the stop, and then the bucket that cut the UCSB lead to 7 I thought they would win too. They really don’t match up well with them. I don’t know why it’s so pronounced. Other BWC teams don’t seem to have the same matchup problems vs UCSB. Gonna cross paths with them or Irvine (or both?) so gotta adjust something. Should be interesting tournament. You’re right, there are Conferences that are much worse making them “horrible” and BWC “mediocre”. BTW…Tact, schmact

I think when UH Football gains momentum it will “steer the ship” and bring more visibility and success toward every athletic program, even enrollment. Similar to what happened at Boise St. People/Athletes will want to play/live here. Kind of “clunky” and inconsistent right now but when stuff runs in “synch” it looks like it did last home stand. Clunky, scrappy with big youth (too young right now) to build around. Ganot (good x’s and o’s coach) can do this with a little help from some Football success.
Looking forward with the UH Men’s Basketball I think should be a smoother, less clunky product next season. As the progress of Carper, Buggs and Avea becomes so visible, the roles should expand for Stansberry (and Buggs too) to be featured as the others compliment the floor balance offensively. Hoping for Thomas to develop (and figure stuff out) over the summer while Green can step into Drammeh’s role and Zigmars shoots more efficiently. Hemsley is sort of on a Mike Thomas trajectory and Hulland has to get bigger and find his game, they have potential to be good pieces . Losing some heart and soul players but UH could be more athletic and versatile when (if?) the depth develops (Zigmars is heart for sure though). Ganot can get over this BWC “hump”. I believe it. One player away. Imagine if he can get that one guy.
Ganot is a good coach and he is building the program the right way. They’ll win 20 games this year with a team that lacks an elite player. If they can recruit an athlete to play the 4 and start with Buggs, Stansberry, Avea, and Raimo they should be pretty well-equipped to compete for a BWC title for the next two seasons. They play good team ball and when their 3’s are falling they are really fun to watch. I really enjoy not watching a team with a lot of attitude problems and I like that there is very little chance of NCAA violations happening. If that means it will take a few seasons to build up a program that can make it back to the NCAA tournament, so be it. better to do things the right way.
With that said, I like UH getting the 4th seed in the tournament. It’s a tough path with the toughest 1st round game and with UCI in the Semis, but at leas they wouldn’t face UCSB again until the final, if at all. Maybe they get hot? Anything could happen…
Too bad UH can’t trade players like in the old days. Remember Boyd Batts for Jimmie “Bad Boy” Baker trade/exchange with UNLV? No sitting out when your transferred back then for UH and UNLV as both were independent at the time. Less scrutiny from the NCAA back then, until the you know what hit the fan (Probation).

Yup, Ganot has got to step his recruiting. The best coach in the world without great players will end up just an average team which UH is today.
Only four turnovers and 10 offensive boards for UH today yet still loss. Get them ready and prepared for Tournament, I think seeding should be an afterthought after this loss. I feel like they can do it. I got a weird (albeit dubious) feeling Ganot can figure it out come tourney time. Trapasso though, hmm. I’m gonna try and figure out his method. There might be “genius” in it. Who knows? We’ll see come Conference time.

Trapasso’s team usually does well in “pre-season”, but fall woefully short in conference play.

no news is usually good news, but need more football recruiting — more transfers from other D1 schools; my wish that the 6′ 10″ lineman at Minnesota got enough of this past winter and seeking warmer pastures closer to his Australian home; late qualifying high school or JC guys who can play [ all power 5 schools and most mid-major powers should be done with their 2019 recruiting ] — IS UH DONE???

The next recruit for Ganot has to be an athletic 4 (larger version of Avea), no more finesse bigs for a while please. Someone who can do a little of everything (just a little is ok) offensively, but someone at least 6’8″ who can do a lot of defense and dunk finish. I think Jessiya Villa’s productivity will be around two years behind Stepteau’s (so should be on par with Brocke’s So. year) in my opinion. Hulland came in with the reputation as a smooth shooter so he has to realize that potential. Hemsley, Green and Thomas should be twice as good next year (even more than that given their lack of production/reliability this season) with a good summer of work. But the key is recruiting. It seems like it is not an emphasis on this staff. Just optically hurting Ganot’s reputation as far as fan confidence. One good recruiting session will change everything. I think his staff has to help out more. This needs to happen now. Leave some staff in California while they have playoffs and scout.
Can’t believe the BaseBows came from being 1-7 down to win 8-7 in 10….against Iowa to split the series. Congrats to the Baseball Warriors.
