Wahine add Hanawahine from Oregon
Kyra Hanawahine, a Kamehameha Schools grad, has transferred from Oregon.
She was not cleared to play in the NCAA tournament. She joins Jolie Rusmussen as a former Duck to Manoa; Rasmussen’s transfer was announced on Dec. 25.
Hanawahine, a defensive specialist, will have two seasons at Hawaii. She is here for the spring semester.

Anyone know if she will be on scholarship?
1. they had a couple left so maybe
Does anyone think that Kyra is better than our incoming ds/liberos? Has she demonstrated what level of effectiveness she’s capable of playing at? Glad that we have her but she needs to stack up first before any hurrahs. Still waiting for a setter, who knows maybe Riley Wagoner with her skills may fill in.
Kyrta have been a defensive specialist/libero all her career so she knows the position. Janelle Gong was an OH in high school so she may need more reps to get to where Robyn wants her to be.
I do think the training Kyra got at Oregon will help her. She faced a lot of very good players in practice like Ronika Stone, WIllow Johnson, Lindsey Van Weide, Taylor Agost, etc….so she is battle tested. She have the unfortunate situation of being behind some very very good liberos so her PT have been limited.
I think whether she plays a lot or not will depend if our freshman can pass effectively. If Wagoner and Hellvig can pass, Kyra will have to battle Okino for PT. If one of our frosh struggles with passing and need to be replaced for passing purposes, Hanawahine will get a chance to play more.
Whats da scoops on Hanna Hellvig? She coming? Not coming? What’s the hold-up?
Thanks Kahuna, well said…
Ive been told by a insider with the oregon program that kyra was neck and neck with brooke nunevellar in practice before her injury. So im excited to see her play
#5 I agree, she is pretty much forgotten. I never know her name until someone actually says it. I really hope she is still coming, but with no word after how many months, you can see why people are not holding their breaths for her to be coming.
anyway, another Oregon steak? RAMS is not playing around when it comes to building a new army is players to put Hawaii back on the map. so excited for the season to start, can’t belive we still have 8 months to wait
Re: Hana: If I recall one of Cindy’s previous statements, she stated that she won’t be surprised if she doesn’t hear anything until after Spring. Does anyone recall the same?
Good transfer; fills a need. Next, a setter transfer.
don’t believe that they should rely on transfers for their important players; as many transfers are usually 2nd or 3rd best at their previous school. we need good freshmen to train them for four years. this past year, the only good one year transfer was the libero. the rest were marginal players.
Coach Robyn is not relying on transfers for key players. Just filling gaps without hurting recruiting for future. She has 5 freshmen, 1 soph, 2 juniors, 2 seniors on scholarships. Needs a backup setter. Probably looking for a setter to fill backup. Has a setter and libero coming in 2020. I think she’s doing a great job building for the future
I love the fact that we are getting LIBEROS to play LIBERO. In the past regime, we may have had to wait a couple years for former prep outside hitters to get up to speed as DI liberos. Akiu, Hanawahine come from “good stock.” They’ve grown up playing club and prep ball trained to play relentless defense and with excellent passing technique. Wherever Hanawahine fell on the Oregon depth chart, she was still apart of arguably one of the deepest defensive units in the country. Based on what I have seen of these players in the past, I would say that Hanawahine would fall somewhere slightly below Akiu and above Okino.
^ wa. wawa wa wawa wa wa. Yes.
I’d want to see DSs Forbes and Ables given a chance.
I’d want to see Setter Homayun (after an AA BVB season) given a chance.
I’d want to see OH Misraje given a chance.
auwe WTx? smh haha laughing-ol
Alright, Savich. Time for you to go. There can’t be two psycho-delusional posters.
Tita Akui taught me the value of a great libero. I notice most big programs have taller liberos. Of course they still need to be quick and fearless. I think Hanawahine is a good get. Now she can battle it out with Gong and Okino. I definitely would not count out Gong as Libero next season.
Wish Kyra for joining to fill the big shoes of Akiu! Back-row army skills: #1) digging bullets, #2) pancake digs for tips, #3) deep baseline digs off high roof, #4) quick legs covering digging coat, #5) accurate passing…What else? Both Akino and Gong were good defensive soldiers. In addition to these skills, Gong brought good service spells while Akino did very well in skill #2 & #5. Look forward to Akino-Gong-Kyra defensive SQUAD excels in guarding wahine SEASON-2019 to reach top-16. [ P.S. Hope not to hear the last season excuse, “we lost because our starting player was injured”].
15. there will be no crossovers from beach to indoor, including Misraje.
Angel Gaskin, however, is playing beach this season.
They are still looking for a setter.
8. These players are contacting Hawaii, not the other way around.
