Spoke with Cia Goods-Fernandez’ husband Rob yesterday. He thanks everyone for their memories on the blog.

Pepperdine is a relatively taller team and will be strong challenge for wahine.

I’ve watched most of set 1. Not sure I can properly describe what I’ve seen. Wahine look uninspired. Maybe even lazy.
And Pepperdine whines a lot, looking for touches on errant kill attempts.
Is there a challenge system in place at Pepperdine? And sadly so far the second set is looking as mushy as the first.

8. So the Rainbow Wahines look lazy and uninspired? Is it because it’s a non-conference match and thus not as critical? Or are they counting on Irvine defeating Cal Poly this coming Saturday at the Bren Events Center on senior night?
Seems like UH is showing more effort during the second set and now Pepperdine called its first timeout.
Wahine seem to be inclined to score points for Pepperdine. Less hitting errors and service errors = win to me. Are they warming up now? I hope so. Go Wahine!

I bet Pepperdine regrets that they can’t get a challenge review. Maybe next year they’ll improve their video technology next year. Hawaii just erased an 8-point deficit. They are showing how important this match is.

That was hard to watch.
Oh man – 8-0 run by Pepperdine to win 25-22? Was it 5 service aces by someone who only had two going into this match? It’s as if Wahine went into cruise control and tried to snap out of it but the momentum shifted.
It’s amazing that Heidi Dyer who has a titanium rod to prop up her spine served five aces in a row after a previous ace and a momentum ending kill. She aced both McKennas and two other Wahine players Dyer sounds like the death knell of the Rainbow Wahine.
You’d think they were trying to receive Charlie Hough’s knuckleballs. That many shanks that bad I see in my league.
3rd set, Wahine were up 22-17 and lose 25-22. So the Waves ran off 8 straight points. How does this happen?

I had to Google to find out who was Charlie Gough. At first I thought he’s a volleyball player, but then learned he’s a baseball player. I don’t know hardly anyone outside of volleyball.
So Tiff Wells noted that each time wins on the left side. Who will chose the left side should it come to a fifth set?
The frustrating part is our blog style is to update on the initial box.

Its just an assumption but I would assume if UH and Pepperdine split that it wouldn’t be so bad since they are one point apart in the RPI rating or could it be bad for both?

31. UH has been doing it all season. In 28 years I’ve never seen a Wahine team give up a big lead at the end of a set and lose as often as this one.
In this 5th set, top defenders left out in bench while exposing undersize attackers/defenders in 5th set, the biggest weakness of wahine.
The article today pointed out the great play by Krug and Gaskin in the match and the contributions of others including Ross. I thought Skyler looked pretty good.
Not happy with that article by “Star-Advertiser Staff” (anonymous) proclaiming “The Wahine finish … at home next week with matches against UC Irvine on Thurs and UC Davis on Fri, victories that would have them finish second for a second consecutive season.”
As I’ve said several times here (and I am the only one to keep bringing this up), it isn’t over until the fat lady sings, and she will be on stage Saturday night at Irvine when the Anteaters take on Cal Poly. Should the fat lady sing, then and only then proclaim any realistic chance of the Bows being crowned BWC champions over. But it aint over till it’s over, so do not write off Na Wahine until Saturday night!
Should the fat lady in her full glory fail to belt out her show-stopping finale, that can mean only one thing: The Big Dance’s automatic qualifier is for the taking for the Women of Manoa! Stranger things in sports have happened! Wishful thinking indeed, but let’s not proclaim this A REPEAT OF 1992 until Saturday night.
If the fat lady sings, regarding the NIVC, one reason given for not going last season, if they had qualified for that tourney, was money.
However, a traveling school is only responsible for the first $15,000 of expenses. A host school has to share revenue with the NIVC.
No at-large bid. No post season.
Well…this is quite a bit of a flux this team is now in. The fact that they’re only one spot behind Pepperdine and forced them to 5 is astonishing, and that’s after they went 3-0 and 3-1 in conference play. Given where this team is at in the RPI, I’m hoping the 2-1 road trip will at least give them some form of confidence boost because I hate to see this non-conference loss negate the two conference road trip wins and have them DROP down out of the NCAA bubble. This team worked so hard to get where they’re at and given what they’ve done, I would hate for Robyn to not accept the NIVC invitation and put the team’s disappointment on the wall just in case they didn’t make it to the NCAA. Their only hope left is if teams with higher RPI than Hawaii somehow get upsetted by teams below Hawaii (E.g. Somewhere perhaps close to 100 maybe?). It’s going to be somehow a long day for Robyn to wonder if she actually ends the season right there.

That is how we have done it ever since I began at the paper in 1981. Did you notice the rewrite of the CSUN match? same staff byline. I wrote that as well.
49. they went 2-1 but the wins were against conference teams that are way down in the RPI. Long Beach State 137, CSUN 170. Beating Pepperdine (RPI 54) non conference on the road would have been a big boost.
