Game Day: Hawaii vs. BYU
Behind freshman QB Zach Wilson, BYU beats Hawaii, 49-23, at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
UH is 0-10 in Provo.
*******
BYU goes for it on fourth down, completing a 26 yard TD pass to extend lead to 49-23 lead with 3:45 to play.
* * * * *
John Ursua, who attended high school a few miles from Provo, makes an acrobatic TD catch to cut the UH deficit to 42-23 with 7:08 left.
But Ursua was tackled for a loss on the ensuring two-point attempt.
* * * *
BYU goes 75 yards in 12 plays to boost its lead to 42-17 with 10:50 to play.
Aleva Hifo turned a pass into the right flat into a 21-yard scoring play.
Hifo rhymes with Hilo, in case you’re practicing your broadcasting skills at home.
* * * * *
When UH is in a hole, it turns to the shovel pass. Dayton Furuta takes the shovel pass from Cole McDonald and goes 21 yards for a TD to close UH to 35-17 with 2:57 left in the third quarter.
Furuta has both of UH’s touchdowns.
* * * * *
There is such a thing as a second chance.
After regaining possession when UH turned the ball over on a punt return, the Cougars drove 35 yards for a TD to extend lead to 35-10 with 6:39 left in the third quarter.
Riley Burt covered the last 3 yards.
* * * * *
Dayton Furuta powers 1 yard for a touchdown to close UH to 28-10 with 10:25 to play in the third quarter.
* * * * *
BYU leads 28-3 at the half.
Here are the numbers:
BYU 248 yards, 6.9 yards per play, 7.4 yards per rush
UH 11 yards, 3.1 yards per play, 1.0 yards per rush.
* * * * *
Zach Wilson tosses 13-yard scoring pass to Dallin Holker to increase BYU’s lead to 28-3 with 1:35 to play in first half.
The TD came a play after Austin Lee picked off Cole McDonald. It was McDonald’s third interception of the season.
* * * * *
Warriors get on the scoreboard with Ryan Meskell’s FG from 33 yards with 4:24 to play in first half.
* * * * *
Well, it appears Matt Hadley has fully recovered from last year’s fractured kneecap. Hadley sprints 21 yards for a TD and a 21-0 BYU lead with 7:24 left in the first half.
Hadley was used at running back — his sixth position at BYU. He was granted a medical hardship that allowed him to play this season.
* * * * *
UH’s fourth drive ends when John Ursua can’t secure a fourth-down pass from Cole McDonald in the flat. BYU still leads 14-0 with 10:28 left in the first half.
* * * * *
Three plays after being called for defensive holding, cornerback Roe Farris comes up with the pick. UH’s ball trailing 14-0 with 13:08 left in the first half.
* * * * *
BYU leads 14-0 after one quarter.
The Warriors, who were shut out in the opening quarter for the second consecutive game, were forced to punt at the end of their three possessions.
Quick comparison:
BYU — 163 yards, 8.6 yards per play.
UH — 28 yards, 2.3 yards per play.
* * * * *
On a quarterback draw, Zach Wilson broke two tackles en route to a 23-yard scoring dash to extend BYU’s lead to 14-0 with 1:02 left in the first quarter.
Wilson is making his first start of his true-freshman season.
* * * * *
Hawaii is having difficulty against BYU’s new 3-4 alignment. Two possessions, two punts.
* * * * *
Lopini Katoa, starting in place of ailing running back Squally Canada, goes 12 yards up the gut for a TD and 7-0 BYU lead.
The Cougars entered with seven first-quarter points in the first six games.
* * * * *
Hawaii goes scoreless on first possession. A false start on fourth-and-2 at their 48 forced the Warriors to punt.
* * * * *
PROVO — Welcome to Utah, where the streets are wide, the sidewalks are clean, gas is cheap ($2.99 a gallon), the rail is light, and two long-time foes — Hawaii and BYU — meet once again.
It appears BYU is switching to freshman quarterback Zach Wilson — not to be confused with UH cornerback Zach Wilson.
The Warriors (6-1) can qualify for an automatic berth in the Dec. 22 Hawaii Bowl if they can prevail today. History nerds … er, buffs will note UH is 0-9 in games played in LaVell Edwards Stadium. Actually, most of those losses were technically suffered in Cougar Stadium (which was renamed after the former BYU coach, who retired in 2000). The Cougars are 3-9 at home in the past two seasons, with their victories against Portland State, McNeese State and San Jose State.
Here’s our preview: UH-BYU matchups
Here’s what columnist Ferd Lewis thinks: Ferd’s Words

LETS GO WARRIORS!!!
UH 27 BYU 24
Army vs San Jose St. at Levi’s Stadium. So empty.
Maybe we could convince Zach Wilson to throw a few interceptions to our Zach Wilson he is our pick leader! Btw we need to really work on our take aways, only 4 so far C’mon Man!
Not looking good for McKenzie and UCF
UH 24 – BYU 34
38 good guys – 31 filthy foes
rj hollis.you already know cuz.
UH 41 – 34 BYU … Go Bows!
This is a pretty cool atmosphere
Let’s go warriors, focus & play together…bowl eligible with a historic win in Provo! Renewd energy on offense, improving skill on the D! Anticipating a break out game at their homecoming! Live Aloha/ Play Warrior
UH 42 BYU 24
Go Warriors! Beat BYU and ruin their homecoming in the process.
They’re expecting the crowd to be in the 50s.
Yep, crowd in the 50s, temperatures in the 40s.
Slight delay, so we’re looking at a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
Some cool things about game-day here:
1) They choose an alumnus to light a game fire.
2) They choose former players to lead out the team.
3) Free stadium wifi.
OK, there’s actually just one cool thing about this place.
Just read ST’s game matchup in the print Star-Advertiser. He gives UH the edge in all categories! The last time UH were 2 touchdown underdogs, he gave the edge to UH in all categories too…and the result is history. I hope ST’s insider observations makes history again!
Run on 3rd and 18. Really?
Today might be a good opportunity to watch Wahine VB at SSC.
Why is UH’s defense so terrible? They cannot stop the run or tackle in space. Hawaii OL cannot block a four-man rush. They need to wake up quickly.
Looks like we are not ready to play. Could get ugly if we don’t start playing with some urgency. Miss tackles need to clean up. Down two touchdowns this can get ugly.
BYU is man handling Hawaii Online and Dline. Not good.
This is going to be a long game…
#22: Yup, that’s where games are won.
MISMATCH in all capital letters.
Ditch the running just keep throwing!
The running reminds me of Chow ball just keep throwing!
Cole needs to run he’s wide open for 5 yard plus and a first down at least in the red zone!!!!
Augafa was holder on Meskell’s FG …. hmmm.
Yep, looks like we’re cooked. 28-3!
So we go back to what wasn’t working on offense after driving down the field in the 5 wide set… OC is clueless. And they still wonder why we boo at the home games.
Horrible play calling on offense.
We’re down 25 and we’re running out the the clock. I’m so done watching this trash.
Outcoached and outplayed. Pretty tough pill to swallow.
This looks like the BYU dominating Hawaii of the past. We look very bad. Poor tackling, poor blocking, McDonald seems to be holding the ball too long and is starting to stare down his targets. I think BYU will pile it on if we can’t change things on offense and defense.
If the coaching staff is intimidated, the players will play intimidated. If the coaches get out coached, the players will get outplayed. Or UH just doesn’t have the horses to win the derby
UH getting throttled again on ESPN! So Typical! I don’t see any miracle comeback in this game. UH needs to figure out their troubles fast because the rest of the remaining games will be just a rough as this one! There is no guarantees that they will win the required 7th game to make it to the bowl game.
Buffoman:
You’re right. BYU showed it wanted to add to its total when it went for it with 13 seconds left in the half. This has nothing to do with someone not getting the UH job, right?
Put Dakota Torres in da red zone
Why doesn’t Rolo use a swing out pass to a RB.
ST., If that is the motivation, it is not cool. If it’s someone wanting to save his job by piling it on, well not so cool too, but it has been done in the past by others when opportunity presented itself.
Second d half looking like we just got over jetlag. I hope we can make it a game. Love to see things turnaround. Defense looked much sharper.
what is up with the passes thrown behind receivers????????………been that way since San Jose game……
Defense…….weak rn. Smh
#41 I agree…….weak is an under statement
UH just didn’t show up for this game at all. So sad!
ST and 40. And if Hawaii went for it with 13 seconds left it would be for football reasons, not spite. Right?
Yeah really sad
They could’ve won this game, punt fumble sealed the deal and changed the momentum.
What matters is that Hawaii beats the teams they’re supposed to beat.
Feel bad for the defense bern out there way too long.
4 mins left in the game. UH will be 0-10 in Provo.
I believe that BYU has had a lot of success on third down, extending drives thus gassing our defense. If we can’t get folks three and out, it’s a problem.
I was feeling real good in the week that UH would win this game but I was wrong. I’m sure many feel the same. They need to forget about this game and focus on conference play.
So embarrassing. What bad defense play. Nevada come in next with a passing offense. Oh boy……..
This game was over from the early stages of the 1st quarter. 🙁
Our dbs out of position again. Pretty bad. BYU is not letting up. Should be fun next year.
Out coached & Out Physical………in 1st half……..Looks like the defense regressed especially the corner backs & Safetys………Or just out coached, The 2nd half adjustments on defense was promising and so was the offense much better but Hawaii had to play catch up.
Next week, they need to make adjustments in the secondary or it will be another long night. In a nut shell……..Defense too porous and inconsistent.
Suffice to say we were outhustled, outmuscled and out held. Yup BYU looked like they were holding on every possession. Pretty good strategy as they figured the officials wont call holding on every play. Wait till they get to our place. Pour it on!!
I blame the Chick-Fil-A and hot dogs for this loss. These are young men and need more substance. Give em Poi next time!
Also, pretty hard to play in 40 degree temp with wind and thin air. That Play calling was substandard is an understatement, it was terrible and contributed to this recent slide on Offense. Gotta take it out on Reno.
The pass interferences call was uncatchable and he barely touched him.
BYU wanted it more tonight. Plain and simple. UH was outmuscled by a more physical and talented BYU. Not happy how UH has a habit of reviving struggling teams, actually quite sick of it. UH needs to recruit more physical linemen, but easier said than done. I wonder what could be done to improve the strength & conditioning and the team’s nutritional needs (hot dogs & Chick Fil A aren’t going to properly fuel D-I athletes)? Shortcomings here are financial, no doubt. BYU has facilities and resources that rival P5 .
No BYU until 2024.
Onward, focusing on Nevada! Get that 7th win!
Non conference game, so what win your conference. Conference Champ is a realistic goal!!!
We eating junk food (hot dogs)and Byu probably eating good. It is what it is… no excuse.., it is what it is.
Thank you Warriors proud of efforts!!!
Furuta fumbled again? One every game I think.
Credit to the players, coaches, and staff for their efforts, regardless of the score. Rolo doesn’t like to complain about what they don’t have compared to the competitition, but the discrepancies are a disadvantage and do upset and anger me, when you see our boys giving their all in spite of it. More can be done and the administration needs to rid itself of the “You doing ok with what you’re getting! Why do you need this and that?” attitude.
RE: #64 RB
No. Fumble was by Holly III. There were 3 fumbles by UH (Holly III, Ursua, Augafa). Augafa, as you saw lost his…
“Persistence through failure” is part of the process. I hope the staff can make the most of this kind of loss. So disappointing. A chance for everybody (even us fans) to gain a better perspective of reality. Not everything can be “magical”. I don’t think it works that way for “foragers” like UH . Going to take a lot of effort and focus. More than before. Feels different now. But they can do it. Just regain the “trust”. Everything is possible. It’s still “right there”. Go Warriors.
Some of the reasons why BYU won so dominantly?
BYU Head Coach Kalani Sitake said after the beating #6 Wisconsin at Wisconsin that he told the Football team to hit the GYM and work out and get stronger and faster. And BYU will be able to beat ranked P5 teams and they did.
Last night, 25 year old, 6’9″ 280lbs DE/LB Corbin Kaufusi was the assigned to spy on Cole McDonald by trying to knock down passes and contain McDonald. And he was athletic enough to disrupt McDonald and big enough to aid in stopping Furuta as well.
The BYU O-line averaged 6’5″ 310lbs with only 1 Senior starting and the backups average is bigger than the starters. The middle of the D-line has guys that are 330lbs and 340lbs. We all watched the game BYU didn’t look like a bunch of big fat slow O-lineman or D-lineman.
Yes, we all know BYU Football players are way older than anybody else they play, because they go on mission for a couple of years before they attended BYU and play college football. And BYU just out played physical/athletic/speed/size and out coached scheme and play calling Hawaii. BYU Defended Home Field.
Embarrassing. Can’t wat till we play PAC-12 teams the next couple of years. It’s not like we’re playing the bottom feeders either.
A lot of things contributed to this loss. No sense in rehash-a lot of lessons learned and hopefully those lessons will lead to improved play in coming weeks. That team on this night would have done similar damage to a lot of teams. Didn’t help that we did not match their intensity. On to Nevada, but I hope we got something positive out of this-GoWarriors!!!
One day we can but not this day. Today…
…stay in your lane!
Some of the reasons why Hawaii lost and got dominated?
The athletic Hawaii Warrior team is still young and needs time to get in the GYM and workout to get bigger, stronger and faster. The team has a good training table and treating the team to an occasional hot dog or an expensive over priced Chick-fil-a chicken sandwich is not going to make a difference, I did say occasional, not every meal.
BYU left their starters in all game to hold off Hawaii late attempt at a comeback.
While the coaches have recruited some athletic studs, these Warriors that represent and play for Hawaii and their families are still young athletic studs that need time to grow. And the coaches will have to recruit even more athletic studs from where ever they can get them.
This a good experience for the young Warriors of Hawaii, they needed to be reminded they have a lot of work to do to compete against every type of team. The sky is not falling like some folks think, but rather the young team and coaches are building experience.
Fresno State has Hawaii scheduled as their cupcake easy win Homecoming Game as well.
Nevada is next.
Go Warriors of Hawaii!
