No. 12 Oregon 3, Hawaii 0; AVP a go, Howling gone, Top 25
UPDATE: Here’s the breaking of Oregon’s strait-sets win over Hawaii on Thursday night.
The weather had delayed a decision but the AVP tour event is on, at Fort DeRussy.
Friday is King of the Court. Saturday and Sunday are a double elimination tournament, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Karissa Cook-Katie Spieler are in the King of the Court Friday.
As mentioned on previous thread sophomore middle Sophia Howling not in warmups. She posted on social media last night that she has decided to leave the team. Will have a comment from Robyn Ah Mow-Santos later. The only thing I had been told was she was fifth on the depth chart.
Someone last thread talked a bit about a trend with players leaving in the middle of the season.
Both Howling and Shaney Lipsomb (last season) left about the same time, in mid-September.

Starting for UH: Granato, Burns, Akiu, Iosia, Ma’afala, Liva, Castillo.
Oregon on a 4-0 run, Ducks lead 15-11 at the TTO
Oregon pulling away at 19-13. TO UH
not only has sophia howling not played a game this year but is not on the floor.
Ducks up 24-16. TO UH
Man, the ref has had 2-3 non-calls on Oregon for double contact on their sets…. call It!!
Ducks win 25-18.
4. mentioned that earlier
UH up 7-1. TO Oregon.
6. This is so true. These refs are terrible at calling lifts.
Oregon tied it at 12. UH answers with a 5-0 run, capped by a dig-kill from Ma’afala. TO Ducks. it is 17-12
think they are inconsistent with the lifts.
Haven’t posted thus far
So I’m getting things off my chest… very disappointed that Sophia left. Norene hitting is not working keep her as a setter PLEASE!!! Should have groomed Sophia as a LS/RS hitter Casey is not up to par Granato is up n down…. Maafala is a serving specialist at best. Give Sibley a chance . Play Skler more
Love. Na Wahine xx
11. guess the best thing to say is Howling is gone so team will move on.
UH was leading 21-14. it’s now 21-16. TO UH
It is sad that Sophia left but we need to respect her decision. I am hoping it is more than just playing time. The season has barely started and they are still playing different combinations. It seems early, just as Emma Smith’s seemed a bit early. I don’t know what kinds of commitment and obligations the players have.
Hawaii challenging a touch on Granato’s attack.
10. There is a standard and none of these refs (or any Hawaii based refs) know it well enough to call them.
baller with a z
Hawaii loses challenge and now Oregon has closed to 23-20
Okino aced. Oregon pulls to 23-21. TO UH
14. Smith left after spring, not during the season. She was asked to redshirt. She wanted to finish in 4 years.
Hardest 3 points ever…. Lets go wahines! Close this set!
Wow. Oregon finishes on a 7-0 run. win 25-23.
Oh, thanks, Cindy. I thought Emma left early. I was sad about her leaving. She left to play volleyball but we don’t know what Sophia’s plans are.
Yikes, maafala needs to never dink again.
Think that was the same rotation as when they gave up that run to Kansas State. except this time Ma’afala wasn’t front row until late.
too many hits uncontested to end set 2. backrow overwhelmed. we need to get better
Boring! No hitters for the next 2-3 years? Bring on the Rainbow Warriors!!
Ducks up 5-2 when Granato aced. TO UH
UH on a 5-0 run Up 7-5. TO Ducks.
nice double hit call
I can’t recall a Hawaii team with less fight than this year’s squad. It’s disheartening to watch a once elite program sink so low this fast. I hope the team can find their character at some point this season and be proud of the outcome in November/December.
That was crushing. Continued performances like that set 2 collapse will disillusion the program’s fan base. The coaching staff better find some new buttons to push because so far they aren’t pushing the right ones.
it was 8-8. Oregon with another ace. it’s 11-8.
hawaii challenging a touch on the block
UH loses challenge It’s 21-17.
Mei Mei, I agree with everything you said. When one of the best setters in the Country needs to play outside and the replacement is an average setter with no blocking ability, something is wrong. This will be a setback in the long run for Noreen. The Coach probably thinks its easy to recruit talented athletic volley ball players. Once you have one you work on making her better. Once the word is out on how we treat our recruits forget about getting anyone from the top 100 coming here.
Iosia needs to go back to her jump serve.
Wish they tried 5-1 with Iosia, maafala had another rough match.
I waited for this match. The Wahine did not disappoint. Just felt like “aw shucks” what could have been, like in the 2nd set. Well, there’s always tomorrow night.
Oregon challenging Akiu’s dig
Wow, well on a side note, at least we kept up w them, AND Tita Akiu is AHHH-MAZING! wish we had her more then 1 season!
R34 no need to overreact some matches Norene hitting in the front row is an advantage this one not one of them.
call stands. it’s 24-22
Ducks win 25-22
They need to pull out all the stops tomorrow
They need at least one quality out of conference win!! Stop the errors, hopefully!
Wasted an amazing performance by Akiu. SMH.
Granato has got to step it up tomorrow.
Oregon winning by as much as they were and still challenged a nonsense call towards the end. Low class!. I didn’t see Robyn do that when hawaii was playing San Diego and were up two sets to none,
despite it ending in a sweep, i have to admit that i was pretty impressed with how Hawaii stayed competitive and challenged Oregon through all three sets. the officials on the other hand need to call the match fair. too many calls on Oregon that they totally ignored and let slip through. Had the officials opened their eyes, this game may have been a little more different. i just think Hawaii needs to stop shooting themselves in the foot at the wrong time. Robyn has the opportunity to show them just how well they played, all the bright spots there were.
as for Sophia, well i wanna say i am surprised, but apart of me isn’t. just kinda disappointed, i was really hoping to see her play. wish we knew why, but whatever the reason, we just have to respect it.
Cindy, perhaps it is NONE OF MY BUSINESS but…if you know and can share…how does Norene feel about her dual role this year? I can imagine it being confusing at times. I like Faith’s spunkiness and personality but does she HAVE to play the whole game? I am just wondering if Norene is ultimately okay with hitting. I imagine her identity is tied to being a setter and that is where she needs experience to play nationally or internationally on the USA team. I know this is fragmented but I just feel for everything.
I can’t hep but notice that with all the bump sets from Tita and Rika, it feels like half the time we’re playing wth no setter at all. When they let Norene set, we do better. Sure, she does surprisingly well as a hitter, but she’s a superb setter. I can’t help but imagine that developing some of our tall players at the hitting position would be better than trying to get our tall-setter/undersized-hitter to fill that role.
Until one of the OPP steps up, Iosia is going to continue playing S/OPP. Iosia is the best OPP right now AND obviously the best setter. So many missing pieces make it difficult for Hawaii to compete with the good teams.
47. don’t see that as a lack of class. the set was 24-22. if the call had been overturned match would have been over at 25-21.
49. Iosia said she likes hitting.
Asked Ah Mow-Santos about Howling
Said she tells all the players if they don’t want to be here then they shouldn’t stay. Said no hard feelings,
This canoe 🛶 [the Program] has to regain it’s potential as a national power. I’d really hoped for RAMS to be successful but when players leave mid-season, you use setters as outside hitters two years in a row, I don’t think there’s a plan/direction in place. I did assume, which I know I shouldn’t, that with AL returning to coach, she would have some connections with some international recruits ie. like the men’s program.
Expectations run very, very high here!! As it should be.
Passing needs to improve. Better passing will allow more middle option/participation.
agree strongly with 11 , 30 , 52 , and 53 !! Would like to see RAMS succeed , but scratching my head with what she is doing. I can see going with starters , but feel playing time for others , is important towards development. From past , lack of playing time for quality recruits resulted in them leaving program. (have watched Smith , Lipscomb and Howling– also , Sibley and Gong and feel they could contribute)! Going with 1 and gone players is very short term and does not build experience/bonding. Everyone can see the negatives with Granato , Castillo and I like Faith , but feel Norene suffers from not being primary setter. Faith gets too cute some times. Ross can help , but not after sitting for so long. In all , with Sophia leaving and still (?) if burns will return , only Skyler is left in middle (ouch)! You can REDSHIRT players , but where does that leave you next year. With present lineup , it isn’t to hard for teams to scout UH—nuff said
I understand that the experienced senior transfer from the top conference in the country hasn’t been producing as expected at the opposite slot, and Iosia has done well contributing offensively, but I just think Ma’afala is a liability. She’s a ho-hum setter, she can’t block, and she’s lazy on defense. Her personality is great for a bench player cheering those on the court and rallying the reserves, but she’s not a Division I setter. I really hope Gaskin (or Sibley) turns it around so that Iosia will be the only setter again.
Senior Granato still plays like a novice with no idea about control, change up. Hits full power cross shots, of course, going out. When find blockers late, pounds to back row benches. Letting down the whole team against TOP opponents which she did with Nikki Taylor, them with Mag. Dragged wahines from top-10 calibre to sub-100. Lost from 21-13 sums up. Some one has to tell this rather layering typical sugar coats by commentators.
Haven’t read the whole thread and I haven’t commented in a WHILE, but I have been following the blog loosely. Ah Mow is in a tough situation, she was basically left with an island of misfit toys and one talented setter who is of prime Dave Shoji Rainbow Wahine caliber. We all know that towards the end of his career Dave could not sell the program to more elite athletes because he was on his way out.
So the argument of having 2 mid-season transfers not reflecting well on Ah Mow is ludicrous. Lipscomb would not have even been considered to be a Wahine caliber recruit, but was basically a last ditch handout to somebody as close to qualified to fill the position as possible. Think of her and Howling as tier III players. We aren’t recruiting you because you will be a starter, we aren’t recruiting you because you will be second or third off the bench. We are recruiting you because we have x-amount of scholarships and maybe your senior year you could have some kind of contributing role. Wish Howling would’ve gutted it out, but the writing was on the wall for her.
I, too, would like to see Iosia back at the 5-1 and see nothing of Ma’afala setting, but keep in mind that ALL of our hitters have inadequacies and since Iosia has proved that she can score just as effectively as the next makes her a viable option which the coaches know they need to have. Agreed that, Dorothy, this isn’t Kansas…or Southern Utah any more and that Ma’afala’s dump shots are free balls for the next team, she at least connects well with the middles which she has shown with Maglio of last year.
Once I saw Granato make that one silly free ball error against Kansas State or whichever team it was this time around, last year it was during the 4th/5th set vs UCLA and once against BYU, I knew that it would be another long year of mental lapses and breakdowns. Am I discouraged as a Wahine fan? Absolutely not. Some of you are expecting them to make chicken salad outta chicken sh-….imitation chicken. We have great coaches and some great recruits coming in and we just have to support our program, be patient, and hold your breath until it’s over if you have to.
Some fans want to see the bench used more and blah blah blah. Isn’t there a decent chance that it only gets worse after the first or second subs? The coaches know this, they are in their own practice gyms. They are probably working with the best possible combinations and having them work through these tough times because they are our best shot at succeeding later in season. I’d rather be losing these tough games now and grinding everything out, hitting the drawing board and practice gym hard in hopes that the players learn and improve through the course of the season.
GO BOWS!
Sibley appears to be under utilized given her size and experience. According to the UH website, she played in 20 games as a freshman (3 starts) (Shoji’s last year), 13 games (1 start) as a sophomore. No injury or attitude problems noted so what could be the reason for diminished playing time? Note three new players are getting substantial playing time. You would think a player in the program is developing and should be contributing. Just wondering.
As long as Maafala is setting and they continue to play the 6-2, I can see no way the team improves long tern.
Everyone unhappy about Iosia setting/ hitting, who do you propose should take her place at opposite?
Gaskin, Angel 1.35kpg .112 kpct
Ross, McKenna 0.58kpg – .107 kpct
Sibley, Kirsten 0.80kpg – .143 kpct
Iosia, Norene 2.25kpg .272kpct
Lets just hope they win tonight and go on a long winning streak and turn this season around! Time to believe!
Said the same thing against baylor last year.
