Football pool

“It’s a tradition,” said coach Nick Rolovich, kicking off the annual pool day for the Warriors.

A little bit of history:

> Pool day started as a reward during the JJ era.

> Pool days are pre-planned, but to make it entertaining, sometimes there would be a “reward” competition. If a kicker converted a field goal, say, then everyone got a pool day. Thing was, there were times when the kicker would miss. And the the competition would have to be extended. Think of Nate Robinson’s victory in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

> Kahuku players were usually the best at diving off the 25-foot platform. Well, they are the most experienced. Jumping off Laie Point is a rite of passage on the North Shore.

> The best diver among the coaches? That would have to be former UH assistant Rich Miano. Then again, Miano was a diver at Kaiser High.

> Alas, the platforms are undergoing renovations and were not available today.

> Several years ago, there was a wideout who just couldn’t muster the courage — or recklessness — to jump from the 25-foot platform. Teammates voiced encouragement. Teammates called him names. But no go. He couldn’t do it. And then near the end of the season, with only a couple teammates accompanying him, the wideout made the jump. There are no time limits on persistence.

This is the “wall” of training camp.
    Might as well splash through.

HOT or maybe I should say Sizzling is what we have here in Arizona with temps often exceeding today’s high of 110 degs.

“Caddyshack!” Blowing off some steam does a lot of good.

As a veteran reporter, the correct answer is always: No, it’s not.
As when Rolo asks: “Is your phone waterproof?”

#9 – that is the extremely smart answer. Hopefully they didn’t pull out your phone and toss you it.

I think in the old days reporters were susceptible to being pushed. But since I’m an old man with heart problems, they usually offer me water and sunscreen. I’ve become Ferd Borsch and Les Keiter.

  12. Da Punchbowl Kid August 7, 2018 2:47 pm

    Ferd Keiter?

Rule of thumb – if everybody else is doing it and not getting hurt, what could possibly go wrong?

It takes a leap of faith to be a WARRIOR!!!

    Live aloha, jump WARRIOR!!!

Coach Logo was on with the Sports Animals this afternoon. Very impressed with his persona. Definitely sounded like someone I would entrust my son with were he a defensive lineman. He came across as a very prepared, knowledgable, patient, and caring individual. Maybe not as analytical as Batoon (who is?) but very competent in his area of authority. Great hire.
