Warriors: Matinee in Manoa

Va'a Niumatalolo has joined the UH staff (see below). / Photo by Stephen Tsai.

UH season ticket holders, Na Koa members and Warrior alumni and family are invited to attend today’s Manoa Matinee at the UH athletic complex’s lecture hall. It begins at 2 p.m.

There will be refreshments, special guests and the chance to roll back the clock and watch the original telecast of Hawaii going against Fresno State for the 1999 WAC title.

The event is free, but limited to the first 150 attendees. Don’t worry, your place in line won’t be bumped by a Bot.

This is the first of a summer film festival of past UH football games.

On Aug. 5, it will the 2001 UH-BYU game (Chad Owens’ two returns for touchdowns, Rolo’s many, many TD passes, Stutzmann’s epic PAT — punt-after-touchdown).

Aug. 12, it will be UH vs. Washington from 2007. (Hint: Don’t leave if UH gets down by 21 points early.)

EARLY LINE
It’s way, way too early to make a call, but for the first two practices, this was the first offensive line: left tackle Kohl Levao, left guard JR Hensley, center Taaga Tuulima, right guard Emil Graves and right tackle Joey Nu‘uanu-Kuhi‘iki.

NIUMATALOLO JOINS STAFF
Kenneth Va’a Niumatalolo Jr. — son of the Navy’s head coach and former Warrior quarterback and GA — has joined the Warriors as an intern for offense.

The younger Niumatalolo, who goes by Va’a, was a linebacker for BYU. His first and last college games in a uniform were at Aloha Stadium (as a redshirt in 2011 and senior this past November).

Coach Nick Rolovich said working with the offense will be beneficial cross-training for Niumatalolo.

“I wish I spent some time on defense as a young coach,” said Rolovich, a former UH quarterback. “You either want to spend more time on the other side of the ball of the line of scrimmage or with the o-line. I didn’t get a chance to do that. He also can bring insight from the other side of the ball as we’re game planning or installing (plays).”

    GOOD MORNING, HAWAII!

BEATING BYU! – on film, sounds good but better if we beat them again

1999 UH 31-24 in OT over Fresno St. Dan Robinson was the QB throwing to Harris (TD), Carter, Lelie (TD) and Stutzmann (Winning TD)

s/b Carter ( TD), not Harris.

I think Joe Correira makes a big sack in the game.
    Can’t remember.
I guess I have to watch it again.

Does anyone have the full game between Hawaii and Miami Ohio from 2001?

In my opinion Kanao Leahey needs to do the play by play as we begin this new era and re-brand the program. Keep Kekaula and Miano as color and analyst. Kekaula as a play by play guy doesn’t set (describe) the situations in way that excites you but he is very entertaining and colorful. Miano is great at describing the mechanisms of what we just saw but his attempts at humor (color) is awkward most times. I think Kanoa is a pro that can set us up (the viewer), and then set them up (Kekauka and Miano) to let them do their thing and keep everything from going off tangent like it sometimes does. Would make for a better product. Maybe a great product.

Tidbits in today’s print paper on the MW teams.
Netani Muti and Christian Cronk did not meet requirements to enroll at UH a few years ago They will be in the Fresno St. offensive line starting lineup ( Muti for the 2nd year and Cronk for the 3rd year).
Bob Davie is dropping the triple -option in favor of a spread offense at New Mexico.

At least Gallup won’t be on Colorado states team this year. He killed us last year.

Miano doesn’t even know the difference between Kaimana Padello and KK Padello.

Taking a headcount on who needs SDSU road game tickets? $35 for the best available seats on the Hawai’i side Plaza level at the 50 yard line etc. Two years ago, we had almost 300 Hawai’i fans sitting in our group! Text me 415-324-0585 or email: tomkitaguchi@yahoo.com

that sounds like a good starting o-line, think JR Hensley will be next all MWC lineman for UH.

    14. Another tidbit, on a telecast, Miano said of UNLV ‘ s Lexington “Lexo” Thomas ” That guy’s fast, he’s fast as lightning. After that, Lexo became known as ” Lightning.”

808, you can check out Wikipedia for the definitions

I didn’t know the difference. Found them to be interesting.

If O-line guys can deliver, offense looks like it could be very strong. It’s all paper now – but it will be fun to see how we do once it’s game time.

Excited, delighted and still not a bot!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Went to matinee yesterday. Great Viewing. Mouse Davis showed up with ROLO at
the beginning of the screening. Noticed something about the replay. I didn’t see ONE
helmet hit by defenders during the game. When did the helmet first tackling begin in
football? Seems like I remember when USC came to town and Colt Brennan was QB.

A good question isleboy, as in my father’s day in the 1940s , with leather helmets, you were taught to hit with your shoulder, as I guess the headgear was not safe enough. Must be when the headgear became more allegedly protective, that someone decide that there was an advantage to using your head. Perhaps some day it will come full circle for safety, completely banning hits with the head, unless incidental/accidental, who knows if this is even possible/enforceable?

Regarding play by play, I think you should include Rob Demello as among the local best, if not the best. Although I don’t think he’s done any play by play broadcasts, his style is very professional, knowledgeable, resonates, and excites. Very classic and old school..something like Harry Kalas. Old-timers…on the radio..remember who did the stats….

#16 … “Savich” … I always go the SJSU game … it’s a blast … just like the UNLV game in Las Vegas, the SJSU game is like a “Home Game” but on the road … between the Bay Area “Transplants” and the local fans who fly to the game it’s a great atmosphere … you should experience sometime …

Kemp is on the Chief’s 2nd team, per one depth chart listing.

Are the practices open to the public and what time are they if they are? Would like to take my son to watch while he is out of school getting ready to start the 7th grade.
