Blast from the past: Handy and Freak
Before stretch-4s and pick-and-pop offenses, there were the UH basketball teams of the 1990s. Those ‘Bows were ahead of these times, with double posts, high-low movements and, of course, G Game.
Two of the best wings from that era were Phil Handy and Alika “Freak” Smith. They were reunited this morning at a clinic at Saint Francis School.
Handy recently completed a four-year stint coaching a Northern Ohio team whose best player is THE best player — LeBron James. Smith teaches at Kalaheo High and coaches five youth clubs.

Let’s make make more NCAA d1 basketball talent. Alika, you can do this. Thanks Phil for lending some high level guidance. Got lots of skilled kids playing Prep ball. We can do it here.

Alika hitting a 3 off a pick-and-curl … Kyle Korver used that move for the Cavs this year. And, of course, who coached Korver? Phil Handy. Oh, the circle of life.
it only took 3 posts for someone here to fat shame one of the greatest players in UH hoops history.

Happy Independence Day.
Nice to see them being very successful!
Yeah, I was out looking for the giant mother-ship.

Feelings are not hurt. It’s outrage at downright jackasses.
I’m not a robot. There are crappy dark pictures to click on.

I watched him work out with his boys, Alika can still shoot. He’s not competing as a player so I’m sure he’s not shame. As a coach though the fire is there. He will help produce D1 players soon enough. Heavy or not legendary Warrior always.
Off topic: Max Holloway will not defend his UFC title on Saturday because of a concussion, according to a TV report.
Happy 4th! GoWarriors

Hi guys,
I am sorta back. Looking forward to watching the run and shoot this fall.
This is a post on my blog from a few days ago. Thought you might like to see the WAC championship ring of 2007 on my finger, and a photo of Stephen Tsai in 2007 at Murphy’s Bar and Grill.

Welcome back, Ms. Gigi
Wow! gigi-hawaii’s back!
ST — gettin’ the band back together, maybe?
gigi-hawaii — in your absence, UHfan808 broke your record with 48.9% of the posts for one day when the total was over 100. 🙄 On a sadder note, we lost Annoddah Dave to leukemia last October. He was one of the original Blog Party 1 attendees, like you and hubby.
That’s Annoddah Dave in the white shirt on the left in my photo of the party at Murphy’s. Yeah, I heard about his passing.
Gigi
Very sad about all the passings

RE: my #20
In the past seven days, these bloggers have posted. Some have been frequent, most not–but they have been with the Warrior Beat for 10-12 years. This month will make 12 years.
