Trapasso gets contract extension
UH baseball coach Mike Trapasso has reached an agreement on an multi-year contract extension.
Trapasso’s contract was set to expire in August.
But Trapasso and athletic director David Matlin told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser a deal has been reached, although details will not be discussed until after the 2018 season.
The ‘Bows are 21-15 overall and 7-5 in the Big West in Trapasso’s 17th season as UH head coach.
Trapasso and Les Murakami are the only head coaches in the program’s Division I history.

The defense has finished strong as the Warriors completed the instruction part of spring training. Tomorrow’s spring fling will focus on a scrimmage.
Defensive coordinator Corey Batoon has installed the base concepts of the new multi-look defense. The Warriors have the capability of using different fronts, personnel and sub-packages. What’s apparent in practices is the communication between players. It’s also nice to see that the players are no longer robotic and free to operate within the framework of the system. Translations: Players can make plays.
The coaches have singled out two defenders — interior lineman Blessman Taala, who has fully recovered from a knee injury that led to his delayed enrollment at UH, and Jeremiah Pritchard, who might be the hardest-hitting UH linebacker since Blaze Soares.
Players not robots, good
In the Oklahoma drill video posted a few weeks ago you could Doug Russell engaged with his blocker using a wide base, holding his ground, finding the runner and making the tackle all while staying pretty tall and composed. Taala has the potential to be the next Sopoaga once he gets the weight room routine down. Youth, girth, and strength, good combo for this duo. Teach them well Coach Logo and whomever is the strength coach. We need to create some next level athletes. We can do it here.
Pritchard has the physical tools and instinct to be a special player.

If not for 1 year, Trapasso’s best would have gotten Murakami fired. Don’t know why we keep Trap around.

Three post-season appearances in seventeen years doesn’t sound impressive, but it’s par for the course for a program that doesn’t sell its soul to athletics.
Arguably, Coach Trapasso would have a better post-season record if the Big West held a conference tournament, and if Rice wasn’t a WAC member.
To be honest, there was one moment in time when I wanted Trapasso fired on the spot.
That was the day Louisiana Tech won on a walk-off home run in the opening game of the WAC Tournament that was held at Les Murakami Stadium.

Three of his former players are in the bigs.
Jonathan Hee, Vinnie Catricala, Esteban Lopez, Breland Almadova, and I’m probably missing a name or two, made it to spring training.
Quintin Torres-Costa currently has a zero ERA at AA Biloxi.
Torres-Costa is the potential fourth.
His recruits Kean Wong and Jake Bauers are at Tampa Bay’s AAA affiliate.
My take on Mike Trapasso is that he recruits decent talent but isn’t a particularly great motivator.
I root for the guy.
I hope this is the year.
