I’d love to know what Olmstead was complaining about after taking the TO at 5-1 UH..
1. does it matter? the cougars have complained about much during the week.
Matautia has tied the tournament record with his 8th ace that came in the run that put UH up 7-1
BYU up 15-13 at the TTO
Matautia with his second ace. sets the tournament record. UH ties it at 20-TO BYU
2. They are whiners and I’m curious what they think they know better than the refs. Typical BYU coaches…
That was ridiculous. Matautia with 3 aces during a 5-0 run. UH wins it 25-20
5. Olmstead wished he had saved a TO…glad Austin aced Sander a few times.
Wow!! Austin is on FIRE!!
My bad. tournament record is 13. Matautia has 12.
Matautia has the single match record with 9.
Sander with hits third ace. BYU up 10-5. TO UH
Faagate with 2 aces. BYU up 15-10 at the TTO
Rosenmeier in for SVT on serve-receive
Parapunov’s tip shot short. BYU wins 25-20
The warrior block is just really bad right now. They need Stijns offense.
Patrick and dalton are playing it way too safe serving wise and not sure why coach wade goes to Namahoe as a serving sub, hsi serve Is not effective.
Man Tufanga is getting one on one blocks all the time, the middles are getting faked out a lot.
BYU up 13-6. TO UH
two consecutive aces by Fernandez and Cougars up 15-6 at the TTO
Block constantly jumping early:/. They need to fix that asap.
BYU up 20-10. TO UH
Matautia with a kill and a solo stuff. it’s 22-16. TO Cougars
Warriors may be out of room but it’s 24-21. TO BYU with Matautia on serve.
Fa’agata-Tufuga ends it 25-21.
BYU challenging UH into the net.
Call reversed. BYU with the 9-8 lead.
UH up 15-13 at the TTO
Ace by Solbrig makes it 19-16. TO BYU
BYU brings in a blocking sub. They have no true setter uot there. Sander with the kill pulls BYU to 20-19. TO UH
SVT blocked. BYU takes the 23-22 lead TO UH
Why didn’t he put in Rattray?!
another horrible lost at home, chances for the at large are going away.
The middles blocking and serving today was very disappointing, gasman used to have a tough jump serve what happened to it?
Stijn didn’t get it done in the end oh well.
They will need to beat long beach in the big west tournament and the way they are playing it’s not looking likely they just make way too many mental errors(hitting and serving)
30. oh please. still got a lot of season left.
at-large not lost.
BYU wins 25-23.
Props to BYU who came to play. Hawaii really struggles against solid serving teams; there three loses were on nights where they were out served and out passed… Lewis and Penn St didn’t really offer up any challenge with their serving games and Hawaii was able to stay in system most of the night thus making Hawaii look unbeatable. Hawaii still has the inside track to get one of the at large BIDS, with LBSU’s serving game being one of their strengths I don’t see Hawaii beating them…
That was tough to watch, seemed like there was a lot of serves that UH looked at each other and didn’t pass. Maybe it was miscommunication, maybe it was serves that had a lot of movement, maybe a combo of both. We couldn’t put down our spikes, credit to BYU for digging well. Season is still young, we have things to improve on, hopefully we can work on them and get better.
Both Sander (3 aces) and Garcia Fernandez (5) came in serving at about 65 percent in bounds. Sander was at 94 tonight with 1 error, Garcia Fernandez at 90. 2 errors.
Agree that UH’s defense was slow to react. There was some miscommunication, some due to moving players around and changing the reception pattern.
We’ll see what happens on the road CSUN another tough serving team and always tough at the Matadome. The X factor really was Fa’agata-Tufuga. He had 16 kills on 31 swings. he was 6-4-18 against Penn State and 0-2-3 in one set vs. Lewis.
Rattray would not have solved our problem. We could not pass. Putting Rattray in and moving Stijn back to OH will bring us back to our second set woes….where Stijn got yanked for his inability to pass.
Bottom line is we needed ball control to run the middle. That was why Cowell was in instead. He is a much better passer and that also allowed Stijn to move back to OPP, where he was All American last year.
And for sure SVT struggled on serve-receive, which is why he was pulled at one point. Thought Cowell played well in Set 4. a little surprised they didn’t use Rattray but he’s an Opp.
Set 1 SVT 5-1-7, not aced.
Set 2 SVT 3-0-5, aced 4 times
Set 3 SVT 4-1-10, wasn’t aced
Set 4 SVT 4-3-9, wasn’t aced.
He ended 16-5-31. all 4 reception errors in Set 2.
When UH got the ball to the middles, they were effective
Gasman 6-0-10, Sobrig 6-0-11. Solbrig in on 6 blocks.
Rattray is an Opp. they had moved SVT there for Parapunov. Cowell a better passer.
So basically BYU elevated their game Uh did not , still disappointed with all these home losses.
I think some of you are being a little unrealistic and expect this team to go undefeated or play lights out all the time. If you take a closer look, we are not that experienced a team. Tui is the only senior. This is Joe Worsley , Dalton Solbrig and even Austin Matautia first year of being full time starters. Even Rosenmeier was a part timer last year.
Rado and Gasman are sophomores (Pat being a redshirt sophomore).. The other players who are contributors are Colton Cowell(soph) and Gage Worsley(freshman).
BYU have a fifth year senior as their setter and a national team OH in Brendan Sanders(who is also a senior). This BYU is battle tested and experienced. It shows that we are one step behind them. Maybe next year , we will be there.
#39 I so agree with you. We still have a lot of time left and it is too soon to look forward to next year BUT…I was thinking…wow, next year’s team is going to be really good. BYU gave UH a taste of what to expect. We need these kinds of challenges and it was good to have this before they go on the road trip.
Find it funny with the Chicken Little drama. UH can only work with what they have. Last year, calling for Parapunov to start and van Tilburg to move to OH to accommodate Parapunov at OPP. They do that this year, and there’s still complaining. UH struggled passing and BYU just played better.
Regarding the passing woes, I’m still curious why Wade is going with Tuileta as the lone libero. He’s had his struggles with passing and was aced 5 times. Every other team who’s come to the SSC used two liberos. I think Namahoe is being wasted in the sidelines (serving once per set doesn’t allow him to contribute much on defense and reception).
@41 I don’t think Mamane can handle being in the game as a lib or DS tbh. Gabe would be fine at DS considering he was the top recruit for libero last year in all the U.S. Tui is doing an awesome job, tonite he had an off nite and like Cindy said, there was a shuffle on serve receive that threw everyone off so hopefully they can work on that in practice. Tui is probably one of the best libero’s I’ve seen, he’s amazing. to think that only Tui is a senior and everyone else returns next year is really crazy. I’m stoked that we are ranked #2, we have things to work on and this year/season is looking good! Go bows! Keep at it,
Problem is long beach returns everyone next season also and they host the ncaa tournament next season also:/
42. I disagree about Namahoe. He can handle being in the game. He already has. He’s started a few matches already and did well. Tuileta is good, but he’s had off nights, which is why a second libero isn’t at all a bad idea. Just ask all the other teams who suit up two.
